From three-time UTOPiA Award-winning author Cambria Hebert.
Watch out, girls. Here she comes.
There's always that girl. She's popular, beautiful, and has everything together. The one with the perfectly teased hair, arms full of colorful (but coordinated) bangles, and expertly painted bright-pink lips.
A teacher's pet. Daddy's girl.
Everyone loves her.
Because everyone is afraid to challenge her.
Kelly Ross is that girl. She uses her powers of popularity for good... her own good.
She doesn't care who she hurts.
She always gets what she wants.
Including your man.
When she walks down the hallway in her hot-pink heels and ruffled denim miniskirt, all the boys' heads turn. And all the girls start whispering.
Maneater.
There hasn't been a single guy Kelly hasn't been able to chew up and spit out.
Until now.
Kelly has finally met her match. He's been there all along, and he's the exact opposite of everything you'd expect.

Kelly and Eric were friends when they were little. At high school, they aren’t friends anymore and they even ignore each other. Kelly is one of the popular kids at school and she wants to keep it that way. Eric doesn’t care at all about popularity and most people call him a geek. He needs to stay at Kelly’s family home for some time. At first, Kelly and Eric ignore each other, but they slowly reconnect and even start to like each other.
Maneater isn’t my favorite book by Cambria Hebert, but I still enjoyed it. I devoured it. I liked Kelly and Eric a lot! They are opposites. Eric is such a sweetheart and the star of this book. He’s smart, honest, kindhearted and caring. Kelly is feisty and honest. Popularity is everything to her. I was curious how much Kelly was going to change and how Eric and Kelly would fall in love with each other. Kelly’s change was maybe a little too quickly, but it was a novella so I didn’t mind that too much.
This Love in the 80's installment is my favorite one yet! For those who are not familiar with the series, it is a series of standalones (all novellas) that revolve around teenagers and young adults in the 80's. Each title is a name of a popular song in the 80's as well which makes it that much more interesting and fun!
In this book by the fabulous Cambria Hebert, the main character; Kelly Ross is a total maneater. She is also the popular girl in school that seemingly everyone loves to hate. But Kelly meets her match in a geek named Eric when he has to stay at her house for a week because of construction going on over at his house. Unfortunately for both, they are total opposites. So living together won't be easy. This is especially true because the two have known each other since they were little... So what will happen between the swan and the geek??
This is a great little novella to get lost in for an hour. It's a fast paced read, totally nostalgic, and a whole lot of fun! I highly recommend this whole series. Usually I don't care to read novellas but this series is definitely worth it!
The manipulative 'most popular girl in school' re-connects with her very first childhood friend, the high school geek.
As a child of the 80s, I read most of this with a smile on my face. I knew the lingo. I knew the fashion. I knew all the songs. And it's bc I knew all the songs that I recognized all the anachronisms.
It says "1982" on the cover but the song quoted at the end is from 1983. And the lyric is "can't you see". NOT "don't you see". WTF.
I am not even going to get into the obvious reference to the 1989 movie Say Anything.
I took off a star for the lack of a fact checker and lack of copy editing.
If you're a lover of the 80's, you don't want to miss this book. If you're an 80's child, you don't want to miss this book. If you love 80's movies, again, you do NOT want to miss this book! Maneater by Cambria Hebert is absolutely fantastic. Extremely well-written, it will drag you back to the halls of high school in the 80's. From the neon colors, the bangles, the gum chewing, the eye rolling, hair spray, music, the lingo and obviously the clothing, every bit of it will immerse you in this story.
I could not put this book down! Really, I read it in two hours. Mind you, it is a novella and I think I spent a majority of the book not wanting it to end. I loved the story of Kelly and Eric. There were parts I laughed in, parts I shuddered and cringed in sheer embarrassment for the characters as well. You get all the angsty good bits also with a huge dose of attitude.
Eric would be my favorite of the two, but it is a really close draw. He's far more "alpha" then you'd think at first. He doesn't let Kelly push him around. Kelly exudes this attitude, and confidence that can come of cocky, however it really hides a softer core inside. She doesn't get annoying with the attitude, because you get some great insights into the character and to be honest, you just wait to see what is going to happen. I was on the edge of my chair for a good part of this book. You see these characters develop and grow, realize that life isn't always black and white.
I would recommend Maneater to ANYONE. The whole novella will take you on one insanely tubular ride that you won't want to get off of. Oh and don't be surprised if you go around the day after reading it, singing 80's songs. :D
It's 1982 and the song raging around is Maneater, and this book introduces us to a Maneater, the thing though is that the girl doesn't realize that she has been labeled one. 1982: Maneater is also a book of opposites attracting. Years ago, Eric and Kelly were the best of friends and childhood buddies and would do everything together. Then life happened, and the pair became hurt with one another and started drifting further apart till one day they completely stopped talking to one another. Life passed them by, and now they are in High School. Kelly is Miss Popular and the Queen B, and Eric is a Science geek. Kelly has a reputation for being a maneater and stealing boyfriends away; she does it for kicks and just because she can. When the pipes burst at Eric's house, he and his mom find themselves crashing at Kelly's house and living there. As the pair start to spend more time together, they realize that they missed one another and that deep down people don't change despite changing their surface stuff. What will happen when Kelly's latest boyfriend-stealing plan backfires and she finds herself an outcast? Will she learn her lesson and in doing so discover that she hasn't been the best person over the years and in doing so change for the good? Or is this just a misstep in her popularity race? Travel back to 1982: Maneater with Cambria Hebert to discover more in this quick Love in the 80's High School Novella.
When growing up Eric and Kelly had been best of friends. Till they weren't. Now in high school, they are in two separate cliques. She is the top girl in the group the Choice. Eric a science geek. When Eric's house has a pipe burst, his mother and he goes to live at the Ross's till the repair is fixed.
Kelly isn't happy about it, but she is soon to learn neither is Eric. He's the first guy that shows he doesn't want her. It's new. Also, he stands up to her and doesn't let her boss him around. Little does she know that they are about to come back together.
Netflix or Amazon Prime, please make this into a movie. I want the 80's nostalgia. This reminds me of Pretty in Pink or Sixteen Candles only the roles reversed. Ugh, I would love to watch this and rewatch.
So this book started off with me disliking the main heroine Kelly she came off as a snobby, stuck-up b***h and she grated on my nerves the wrong way, but she slowly grew on me and by the end of the book I was loving her and rooting for her to get her man. That just speaks volumes for how well Cambria Hebert can write and develop a character in a short span of time. Eric was the perfect guy he was sexy in that geeky kind of way which I love in a man.
It's not very often you find a book with a heroine that needs to be brought down a notch or 2...but Kelly is that girl, and boy did she need a reality check! She was "miss popularity", all the guys wanted her and all the girls wanted to be like her. And even though Eric may have wanted her as well, he wanted his old friend back- the girl he knew all those years ago. He didn't put up with any of Kelly's antics- he saw right through her.
"Too many people treated her like she was in charge. Too many people gave her all the power. Not me. Not this kiss. This kiss was mine. I'd share with her, but on my terms."
Eric was such a sweetheart! I did not like how Kelly treated him, outside of when it was just the 2 of them. She really needed to be taught a lesson, and it was good to finally see her eat some humble pie!
On a side note~I'm a product of the 80s, I graduated high school in '87, so I have to admit some of the clothes and some of what these characters were saying just didn't work for me for the setting of 1982...they were more used/popular in the mid to late 80s. But that's just my little issue with the book.
I did like this book, but I was never a fan of these "mean girl turned nice" kinda stories. And while it was written nicely, I just couldn't like Kelly. Imo she did nothing to actually get redeemed in that whole book - I'm not even sure she apologized once for the things she pulled (but I'm not 100 % sure). If it weren't for this aspect of the book, I might actually give it four stars - but it fell flat because of it.
I LOVED THE 80'S Even though I was only between the ages of 3-13 I still love everything about the 80's & this book takes you right back there. From the neon colours, the bangles, the gum chewing, the eye rolling, hair spray, music, the lingo and obviously the clothing, every bit of it will immerse you in this story. Maneater by Cambria Hebert is absolutely fantastic, usually its the jock who falls for the nerd girl so I really enjoyed this role reversal even though I wouldn't really class Eric as the classic nerd. This is a Novella so is a short read but oh so fantastic I could not put it down!
It's not very often you find a book with a heroine that needs to be brought down a notch or 2...but Kelly is that girl, and boy did she need a reality check! She was "miss popularity" "There are two kinds of people in this world. Me and everybody else." She's what would be a Mean Girl now.
Eric who everybody classes as a nerd is far more "alpha" than you'd think at first. He doesn't let Kelly push him around which I loved he wasn't intimidated by Kelly or the other people in the groups. “He smirked. “Don’t worry, Kelly. I won’t say a word. I don’t want anyone to know I'm here either.” “You don’t?” I echoed, surprised. I thought he’d be shouting it down the halls. I mean, him staying with Kelly Ross? He’d be instantly popular, and I’d be a laughingstock. “No,” he said, his voice flat. I felt my mouth drop open again. Eric let himself in his “new room” and before I could recover, shut the door in my face.” You find out that Kelly and Eric where childhood bestfriends but lost their friendship and went separate ways. It's such a sweet story finding out about their past and finding their way back to a friendship. The planetarium being one of my favourite parts.
As their friendship grows you she them falling for each other, but with Kelly second guessing if it's worth loosing the popularity she has. This made me want to give her a shake. I loved that Eric wasn't a push over not just with Kelly but with everyone but especially with Kelly.
"Too many people treated her like she was in charge. Too many people gave her all the power. Not me. Not this kiss. This kiss was mine. I'd share with her, but on my terms."
I would recommend Maneater to ANYONE. The whole novella will take you on one Totally Rad ride that you won't want to get off of. And will leave you smiling like the Cheshire cat.
Let me start off by saying I freaking love the cover of this book and I love the premise for the entire series. I've always been oddly fascinated by the 80's and soak up movies and books set in that time period. Cambria is pretty much my favorite author (aside from R.L. Stine, of course) so I was super excited when I learned she would be writing a story set in 1982.
The book starts off pretty well and I was immediately sucked into the story. I admit that there seemed to be an overuse of slang in the beginning and I did notice some typos, but, at least for me, they were easily ignored. Once the story got started it was smooth sailing and I found myself falling for Eric. He was a very likeable character and I wanted to know more about him and his history with Kelly.
Kelly was one of those characters that I couldn't find myself liking at first. She was pretty despicable and I couldn't get passed the way she treated her friends and the people around her. She was everything that the synopsis for the book promised. The further the story went on, however, and the more she began interacting with Eric, we started to see a different side to this 'man-eater'. She was softer than she led people to believe and she didn't always like the things she did.
Maneater was decently reminiscent of the 80' and reminded me of something right along side of a John Hughes film.
Man-eater was so much fun to read!! I'm so happy it was the girl that was the hot popular one that needed to be humbled. This book is such an entertaining light fun read. Kelly was such a great lead. So high on herself & thinking she was on top & nothing could stop her. Even though Eric was considered the "geek" he was still a strong male lead. I love how Man-eater is so different from most reads out there. Who doesn't love the 80's? Cambria did a spot on job with describing details from the 80's clothing, to the music & even the slang spoken!! It's was rad!!! Total must read!! You want something different, sweet & makes you smile then you must read Man-eater!!!!
Maneater was pretty good, I definitely liked the 2nd half of the novella much more than the 1st. I really didn't like Kelly for a while. She's not a good person and is quite full of herself. The sad thing is that she doesn't care that she's hurting people's feelings, she just wants to show she's the top dog at her high school and she'll do anything to stay there. She has a lot of growing to do. Luckily she does that with the help of Eric. Eric helps her to see that she's strayed from who she used to be, and that she can be that person again. Eric is basically the complete opposite of Kelly, and much easier to like. I liked him right away and felt for him and all that he's been through. I love that he doesn't back down from Kelly and give into her, he stands his ground. After we see the better side of Kelly I started to like her more and root for them as a couple. I thought the last chapter was really cute and shows how far Kelly has come.
This story was epic. At first I thought I would hate it, you know... Typical "mean girl turn-about" plot twist. But no, no, no. It was well-written, the storyline wasn't cheap at all, some of those dialogues made me laugh out loud and main characters had abso-fucking-lutely amazing chemistry. I'm gonna have to—need to!!!—read some more book written by this author. Definitely.
This book is sooooo good, like really really really finger licking good 😩😻😍gosh, Cambria Hebert you're a bomb 🤌 I feel like I'm watching a movie the way CH described the scenarios and interactions that were happening here. ERIC SEAVERRRRRR BEST MAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! A full-length review will follow.
I absolutely loved Maneater! It was the male version of Rimmel! I loved the 80's theme and learned a new slang...crunchy...totally using that!!! My daughter is excited about being able to color the book now that I finished reading it! As always another awesome read by Cambria!
This book was EVERYTHING. I love the character development and the throwback vibes. It was funny, snarky, and so so sweet. Thank you for another amazing read!

ah the 80s, the decade known for greed, excess, big hair, questionable fashion choices and some great music. Luckily, I'm young enough to have missed the worst the decade had to offer, but old enough to still enjoy the music, NKTOB anyone!
Maneater is a fun and entertaining story that allows us to revisit the 80s without actually having to re-live the 80s. If you haven't read a Cambria Hebert novel, this would be a perfect place to start.
Kelly is your typical High School Queen Bee. She is ruthless and will do anything to stay on top, even betray a friend or use a guy or two. However for all of Kelly brava, she really is an insecure girl who is afraid to be herself or upset the status quo. Eric is not your typical "nerd" While he may wear glasses and like school, underneath the labels, he is a man who knows what he wants and won't take a back seat to anyone.
Kelly and Eric were great friends when they were young, but due to problems in Eric's life he became withdrawn and their friendship was lost over the years and their lives went in different directions. When disaster happens at Eric's house he is forced to live with the girl who forgot about him.
Kelly is not happy to have the school geek living with her but as she spends more time with Eric, she finds a boy who challenges her and peaks her interest. As they spend time together, they both realize they missed each other and they have more then friendly feelings.
However, can Ms. Popular and the school Geek, really make a go of it or will the hierarchy of high school put a stop to their romance before it can begin.
>I am an independent reviewer. This is a standalone book with an HEA. Kelly is the most popular girl in high school. Eric is a science geek. They used to be friends as children, but the cliques, time, and circumstances got in the way.
>Kelly knows what a self-centered person she is. She purposely goes out to attract guys in order to prove she can, then dumps them, hence her nickname of Maneater. I thought Eric was very alpha and sexy in regards to his actions as a boyfriend. He was very dominant. When Eric and his mom had to live with Kelly’s family, the family dynamics that Kelly is used to are revealed. Her parents seem very loving and normal, yet don’t seem to notice how Kelly is turning into an unpleasant person. I found that odd.
>I loved the scenes with Kelly and Eric together, but never really felt good about Kelly. I loved the “Say Anything” reference she used to prove her feelings for Eric. Kelly kept hurting Eric way after I felt she should have changed enough to know better.
>This series is appropriate for an adult audience. I am giving this book 4 stars. I didn’t like Kelly, but the 80’s terminology and references made this story a fun read.
Loved this story because the '80s were my college years and I could relate to a lot of the references! Kelly is Queen of the popular girls in her high school. She knows she has power and isn't afraid to keep the other girls in line. Eric is a chemistry nerd and keeps to his friends. He hears the whispers and rumors that are said about Kelly, she is a maneater! She dates guys briefly and then tosses them aside. She has even gone so far as to go after her best friends boyfriend! Eric goes home to find out his house has a busted pipe and has flooded their house. Instead of going to a hotel to stay till the pipes are fixed, his mom has accepted the hospitality of one of her friends, Kelly's mom! In the past Eric and Kelly had been close friends and then one day they weren't. Kelly is appalled when she finds out that Eric and his mom are going to be staying with them. Can Kelly keep it from everyone at school that a science nerd is staying at her house? Can Eric see past the façade that Kelly presents to everyone at school? Great read and so many funny moments. Light hearted, romantic and down right feel good from the '80s! This book is fun and stirs those memories you have of the '80s!
At first I wasn't into it because we have the classic bitchy girl who only wants popularity and manipulating boys with her looks but then I got into Eric's part and I am hooked! Eric is the classic lanky nerd that loves science. He's a nerd or a geek or another name you can think of that is worse than those two. Then we have Kelly who is popular, knows her fashion, and knows how to get a boy wrapped around her finger. They used to be best friends until they grew apart. Some misunderstanding happens along the way that prevents them from being friends. However, it is fun and fluffy to see how they mend their hurt with passionate kisses and sweet nothings.
This book is an epic 80's movie, and everyone knows those were the best films. It's about Kelly it girl in high school trying to stay it girl, what she doesn't know is that everyone has dubbed the maneater. She goes after other girls boyfriends and takes them and then drops them. Eric is the science nerd used to be friends with Kelly but her popularity and social crowds their friendship ended. Eric is staying at Kelly's house while his is repaired and he is not putting up with her tough girl act, like everyone else. This was a cute story it could be a movie for sure, I loved all the 80's references that I can say I said, and their clothes were spot on. I loved how Eric totally handled her. I was hoping to see how things changed but it ended before we could. Hooray for nerdy boys
The Ultimate Popsugar Challenge requires "A book set in the 1980s" and this was my pick. I've read less than a handful of books by this author, and this novella drags you back to the 80s with all the pop culture cliches of that era - which I kind of enjoyed.
The main characters, Kelly and Eric, are childhood friends who grew apart but are forced to become housemates when Eric's house became inhabitable. Through a series of almost-comical situations, and the forced proximity, both of them reconnected. Will their budding relationship withstand societal and peer pressures, the draw of popularity vs integrity?
This novella and its classic trope of opposites attract is just of the right length. An enjoyable 3-star read.
This is another great novella in the Love in the 80’s serial. This book is really enjoyable, and author Cambria Hebert puts an imaginative spin on the Maneater song, by Hall and Oates.
The plot is creative and the characters feel very real. Kelly and Eric could be people with which I went to high school. I like the overall theme that “the more things change, the more they stay the same.” There is nothing that can affect you like someone who knew you well years ago. I also like the addition of 1980’s phrases together with their definitions.
This blast from the past is perfectly crafted for high school life in 1982. 5 stars
Kelly Ross knows what her fellow classmates call her, but can nerdy Eric change her ways in Cambria Hebert's 1982: Maneater? What I enjoyed most about this book was diving into the early 1980s with the crazy fashions and totally rad lingo. Without the dual point of views, I don't know if I would have continued reading. I fell hard for Eric, who is smart and funny, but Kelly was a bit off-putting at first with how she treated her so-called friends. I grew to like her, though, as the story progressed. If you're a fan of the '80s and a tad steamier than sweet young adult romance, then you'd totally enjoy 1982: Maneater by Cambria Hebert.
