The Articles of the Synod of Dort

Rate this book
The Articles of the Synod of Dort is a book written by Thomas Scott, originally published in 1856. The book provides a detailed account of the Synod of Dort, which was a meeting of theologians and church leaders in the Netherlands in the early 17th century. The synod was convened to address a theological dispute between the Dutch Reformed Church and the followers of Jacobus Arminius, a theologian who had challenged some of the tenets of Calvinism. The Articles of the Synod of Dort presents a comprehensive overview of the synod's proceedings, including the debates and discussions that took place, as well as the final decisions and conclusions that were reached. The book also includes an in-depth analysis of the theological issues that were at the heart of the dispute, such as predestination, free will, and the nature of grace. Scott's writing is clear and concise, making the book accessible to both scholars and lay readers. He provides historical context for the synod, as well as a thorough examination of the theological concepts that were debated. The Articles of the Synod of Dort is a valuable resource for anyone interested in the history of Reformed theology or the development of Christian doctrine. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Well, this non-Calvinist decided to sit down and give the TULIP original a read. And I'm very happy I did.

One thing to note on this particular edition is that the actual articles comprise only a few pages of the book. Most of the book is Thomas Scott giving the history and context of the Synod, and it was an absolute joy to read. He deals both with preceding events as well as with some of the fallout from the Synod in a very gracious and fair manner, well becoming of someone representing the reformed tradition.

The book is older, so it's quite wordy (prolix, as Dr. Scott might say). This I found to be more of a benefit than an impediment. There is a certain grace and quality of communication I would have lost without it, so I am grateful. That being said, there is a lot of material to sort through, and it can get thick at times.

From the Synod itself, I still find myself ultimately in disagreement with the Synod on some points. Biblical election seems more properly the realm of God designating the parameters of what his covenant people look like, as opposed to actively choosing Tom, Tuck, and Margaret for inclusion. All the same, I do think I walked away with a far more accurate view of what Calvinists believe, and that might be the most worthwhile part of having read the Articles.

Overall, a helpful history of the preceding events that led up to the famous Synod of Dort. The only downside would be that Scott is against the civil magistrate relating to religion and the church in the way it was generally agreed upon by historic Reformed churches.
