Donovan Nash #6

Pegasus Down

Rate this book
A CIA-operated jet on a clandestine mission disappears in Eastern Europe.  No mayday, no wreckage, and no known survivors.  No way to know if the top-secret extraction of a key American scientist from Slovakia, or his liberator, Dr. Lauren McKenna, code name Pegasus, are dead or alive.

Donovan Nash’s precarious world is rocked when word reaches him that his wife, Lauren, is missing in Eastern Europe. Using his millions, and fueled by the fear of losing his wife, Donovan and company cut a swath through Austria and Hungary.  Desperate, Donovan leverages his lifelong secret to enlist an unlikely ally—one of his oldest friends—who may very well want him dead. As Donovan closes in on the truth, another, and more deadly, reality is revealed.  A ruthless terrorist group has acquired a stealth aircraft with the ability to deliver a nuclear device. They are poised to strike—but where?  What started as a rescue turns into a full-throttle aerial chase.  Will Donavan be able to rescue his wife, as well as prevent a nuclear catastrophe?

As a young man, Philip Donlay's life was shaped by two distinct events. At the age of seventeen, he earned his pilot's license, and at eighteen was published in a national aviation magazine. The combination of these two passions: flying and writing, has led to successful careers as both a professional pilot and novelist.

He's been a flight instructor, flown a private jet for a Saudi prince, and for twenty-eight years flew a corporate jet for a Fortune 500 company. Licensed to fly six different jets and having logged nearly 14,000 hours, his travels have taken him to over forty countries on five continents. No longer flying, Donlay now divides his time between Minneapolis and the San Juan Islands. He's the author of four novels, Category Five, Code Black, Zero Separation, and his latest: Deadly Echoes.

In Philip Donlay's Pegasus Down, the 6th installment in the Donovan Nash thriller series, this fast-paced thriller deals with headlines that's almost similar to today's headlines. When Donovan learned about his wife's plane going down and presuming missing, it had turned his world upside down. And that had started the search for her plane somewhere in Eastern Europe. For Dr. Lauren McKenna, she became a sole survivor of her flight and had to find a way to escape from treacherous waters, even if she had to fight tooth and nail for her life. And when she's captured from a mad Ukrananian, only she knew what secrets her deceased colleague had never told. For Donovan, he had to reach out to an old friend, someone who knew about his past life and former name, for outside help. From there, Donovan his EcoWatch team join forces with his friend's daughter and prowl the land for clues to start a rescue. As soon as they learn more about the top secret that could destroy millions of people, he rescues Lauren and then loses her in a blink of an eye again. The race is on to stop this mad man, when more lies, blackmail, and treason have been revealed, and justice would be prevailed at the last hail mary save.

I really enjoyed the first two books in the Donovan Nash series, but since then things have been in decline. Pegasus Down unfortunately continues that trend. It's an OK action book, but nothing special. This series has always been light on realism, big on action sequences, but this entry takes the ridiculousness to new heights. I won't spoil anything, but it's impossible to take this seriously.

The biggest issue for me here is the constant recapping. Normally I applaud authors who try and make their books in a series work as stand alones, but at some point - we're on book 6 here - you have to assume people have read at least some of the previous entries. Once again here we have to sit through the whole Donovan Nash used to be billionaire Robert Huntington explanation, Meredith's death, Montero's blackmail scheme, and countless other things that readers of the series already know. All it does is make me want to skip pages. I was hoping after the last book we'd be done with Meredith and Huntington, but no such luck.

I'm almost to the end of this series, so I'm not going to give up on it now. That said, I hope in the next one the author can give us a straight up Donovan Nash up adventure story with no connections to his former life. I can't take reading about Robert Huntington anymore!

I absolutely love to read Philip Donlay's books. They are always fast paced. This book was edited so that you didn't have to translate what he meant or attempt to read what the word should be. This book met the criteria of fast paced. The story line was believable. This book was about the love of our childhood friends. It delved with how these friends are necessary to grow into well functioned adults. It was great. I have read all his books....now just waiting on another.

You don't want to miss this one!

Mr. Donlay's books are impossible to put down! With one of the main characters lost in a hostile country and Nash breaking down all barriers to find her, high-octane suspense and action start at the beginning and never end!

P.S. Upon finishing books 1 through 7, I can honestly tell you the quality and suspense and action are in every single book and I recommend them all!

Fast paced non-stop adventure!

I've read several of Mr. Donlay's books. All are non-stop fantastical adventure. This was no exception. I mean, who crash-lands a 727 ..... Sorry that would be a spoiler. Great friendly characters. The bad ones are really BAD!!!!! I can only highly recommend this book to you. Plenty of crazy flying too. That is if you can take a helicopter and land it.... Whoops, more spoilers. Read the book. It is a wild ride.

I really enjoy Phillip Donlay's writing. Pegasus Down was a breathtaking read. Every sentence is necessary to the story. No filler, no endless repeating, no gratuitous gore or sex or unrequited love. Fast moving, totally engrossing with bonus info on interesting topics as it goes along. A pleasurable coincidence for me was a reference to an old James Stewart movie (The Flight of the Phoenix) which I viewed immediately before beginning to read this book.

Wow, Donlay just gets better & better!

Philip Donlay is by far the best fictional thriller author I've encountered in years. Each of his unique and thoroughly researched novels keep me spellbound from the beginning to the last page. I simply get nothing accomplished until I finish each NOVEL and then it starts all over with his next masterpiece!

Donovan Nash

I liked the book fine but it seems that too much of the book is taken up with the past. I think that after reading five books that some of the past should be shorten. Maybe the over amount of the past is for readers who only read one book. I still have two more books to read in the series and I plan to skip over the history of Donovan's past.

Thriller!

Love the fantastic action and unreal situations that Lauren is always trapped in. The actions that Donovan goes thru to rescue his wife and the characters that emerge from his past is also unbelievable. The author knowledge of Europe is very good and the detailed terrain is extremely realistic. A great read as usual.

Superlative tale of high stakes drama and derring-do!

I just love this series. So we'll written, the drama is intense and so well described that the pictures unfold in my head as I read. Great characters in great relationships, wild plot lines and things you just didn't see coming, Philip Donlay gives us his all!

Must. Keep. Reading. I love this one and its the sixth Donovan Nash book. However, Lauren McKenna steals the show and I really love that. She's great. I love the suspense. I love that Philip Donlay sees some of the same characteristics of Europe that I do, it makes it that much more engrossing.

Another exciting book.

WOW! Another great book. Another you cannot put down. I love airplanes and flying stories. I will say my emotions were greatly affected a lot of times. The knowledge Philip has about flying is very extensive.

Excellent job here

Nicely crafted characters. A plot that moves. A bit overuse of equipment. Unnecessary Epilogue. Some of the sentiments rang sappy. However, altogether an enjoyable read. Well done.

Exciting mystery

This is 1 book that I could not put down! Some of the flight altitudes and turns got to be boring - but the ending was wonderful. Then, another surprise at the very end.

As a pilot, a book about a pilot by a pilot is at a new level of pleasure. (no i wouldn't think of attempting anything he gets away with!). Excitement is at the upper edge of realism. A good book to abandon Netflix for!

A thrill of a ride

The trouble never stops. You can’t get bored with this book. Keeps you wondering what will go wrong next. Don’t think I want to ride in an airplane any time soon.

This was a bargain Kindle book offered by Amazon. I was reading two other nonfiction books and needed a distraction. OMG this was it with a totally preposterous plot, daring escapes, evil villains, heroes with infinite resources, love, strong women, and the Danube River. Not sure I’ll read another but maybe...

Action, adventure, a little geography

If you like suspense and action, this is for you. I finished the book in less than 2 days. It’s the second Donovan Nash Thriller I’ve read and I’m ready for the next one!

Another plane falling down. Now it's Lauren times. This series was full of the airplanes related stories. 🤣
This is a rescue mission from the terrorist area. The CIA won't help, it's Lauren alone and her husband story to get out of the country by themselves.

Well-written, I was zooming through (hadn't read the prior ones in the series). But after Lauren was found, I was done. Felt the book dragged on after that point.

Like a quickie screenplay. Reading level: elementary. Probably ok for YA or reluctant readers.

Red Flag: When the pages are mostly dialogue, I won't like it.

** Not finished.

Non-stop action

This book was like stepping into a movie script. It was nothing that I could begin to imagine and was a constant thrill and suspense. I had to remember to breathe!
