About the author

Max Velthuijs was a celebrated Dutch illustrator, painter, and author best known for his beloved Frog picture book series. Although he began illustrating children’s books relatively late in life, his work quickly gained international acclaim. His first major success came with A is een aapje in 1964, and he achieved global recognition with Frog in Love, published in 1989 by Andersen Press after it was initially rejected in Europe. The Frog series, which eventually included over twenty titles, became known for its gentle, heartfelt storytelling and philosophical depth, earning Velthuijs comparisons to modern-day fables.
Throughout his career, Velthuijs collaborated with prominent publishers and saw his books translated and performed in various media, including theater. In 2004, he was awarded the Hans Christian Andersen Medal for writing—one of the highest honors in children’s literature—for his enduring contribution to the field. In his acceptance speech, Velthuijs humbly reflected on the emotional complexity of his characters, acknowledging the mystery of creative inspiration. He passed away in his hometown of The Hague in 2005.

Dutch children's author and illustrator Max Velthuijs, who won the Hans Christian Andersen Award for his artwork in 2004, returns to the world of his ranine hero in this fifth installment of his acclaimed picture-book series. Here we have Frog, convinced that something distinctly unpleasant is going bump in the night, high-tailing it for his friend Duck's house, only to discover - having been taken in - that there are plenty of frightening noises there as well! When Duck and Frog both flee to Pig's house, the trio spend a restless night, listening to every sound. It falls to sensible Hare, who comes looking for them the next day, to offer reassurance...

Another sweet story in this charming series, Frog Is Frightened - originally published in the Netherlands as Kikker is bang - is a sensitive, gently humorous exploration of the common childhood experience of being frightened of the dark, with its many mysterious sounds. The continuing exodus of Frog, the late-night flight(s) through the woods - surely more scary than staying in bed? - all had me chuckling. The artwork, as with the previous installments, is very appealing, with its bright colors and simple composition. Recommended to young picture-book readers who are afraid of the dark, and to fans of Max Velthuijs.

Kikker is bang

Het is fijn om goede vrienden te hebben. Als je bang bent heb je iemand om naar toe te gaan. Samen kun je dan praten over je angsten en als het gekke angsten zijn dan lachen jullie er gewoon om.
En als je heeeel bang bent en niet kunt slapen, dan kruip je bij elkaar in bed. Alleen zijn is veel enger dan met zijn drieën. Een boek over angsten en vriendschap.


De boeken van Kikker hebben altijd een goed thema, zijn mooi vormgegeven en je leeft helemaal met Kikker en zijn vrienden mee.

Nog een keertje voorgelezen aan mijn slapeloze 'ik-heb-een-enge-droom!-dochter'...
Wie krijgt er ook steeds een krop in de keel bij de slotwoorden van haas en is ook zo DOL op het bevrijdende slot?! (als je begrijpt wat ik bedoel...)

In huis ben ik wat aan het rondschuiven met boeken en dat levert geregeld 'ach ja, deze...'-momentjes op. Toen ik deze opensloeg zag ik mijn eigen geschreven opdracht aan een van mijn jongens, toen bijna 4 jaar staan en smolt een beetje: 'Voor lieve Floran, voor wie 's nachts alles anders lijkt. Kus van mama ♡'

Ondertussen heb ik 'Kikker is bang' toegevoegd aan de lijst moderne jeugdklassiekers, het verhaal is tijdloos en monsters kunnen altijd weer even om de hoek komen kijken en wat is er troostrijker dan niet alleen daarin te staan.

'Weet je,' zei Haas, 'iedereen is wel eens bang, dat is heel gewoon.'
'Jij ook?' riep kikker verbaasd.
'Ja hoor, ik ook,' zei Haas. 'Daarnet nog. Ik dacht ineens dat jullie er niet meer waren en toen werd ik verschrikkelijk bang.'
Even was het stil.
Toen begonnen ze allemaal hard te lachen.
'Hoe kan dat nou!' zei Kikker. 'Wij zijn er toch altijd!'

“Frog is Frightened,” is a twenty-six pages children’s picture book. Frog, the main character was disturbed by strange noise, which made him very scared. Frog ran to Duck’s house for comfort. Both Duck and Frog were cuddled in bed when they started to hear strange sounds. They were afraid so they ran to Pig’s house for help. Pig laughed at their ghost story. Later all three of them slept together in Pig’s bed. Hare became very worried when he visited Frog and Duck and found their houses empty. Hare went to Pig’s house and found his friends. They talked about their fears and laugh together. The story is well written with bright colorful illustrations that contribute to the text.
The language and style is appropriate for the intended audience. Children listening or reading this
story will learn how important it is to have good friends.

Ik ben echt gek op boeken van kikker. Ik vind dit echt super verhalen waar je als kind echt veel aan hebt. De verhalen zijn leuk maar ze vertellen je ook echt iets waar je iets aan hebt. Ik ben daarom ook echt een voorstander van kikker boeken voorlezen aan kinderen en hier lessen aan verbinden. Dit boek is dan ook een voorbeeld weer van zo een boek waar je heel veel mee kan. Super mooie boodschap over wat te doen als je bang bent en dat je vrienden er altijd voor je zullen zijn om je te helpen.

What I hated about this book (aside from the storyline being pretty lame and uncreative) was that at the end, the only legitimate fear (Hare being afraid that something terrible happened to his friends) was laughed off as being ridiculous: "Don't be silly, Hare . . . We'll always be here." So apparently it's completely reasonable to be scared of ghosts in the dark, but when it looks like there's a true danger we should pretend it could never happen.

Ésta miedosa ranita va en busca de sus amigos para refugiarse y dejar de sentir miedo, pero contagia sus miedos a Pato y terminan visitando a otro amigo. Muy bonito cuento 😃
