Max Velthuijs was a celebrated Dutch illustrator, painter, and author best known for his beloved Frog picture book series. Although he began illustrating children’s books relatively late in life, his work quickly gained international acclaim. His first major success came with A is een aapje in 1964, and he achieved global recognition with Frog in Love, published in 1989 by Andersen Press after it was initially rejected in Europe. The Frog series, which eventually included over twenty titles, became known for its gentle, heartfelt storytelling and philosophical depth, earning Velthuijs comparisons to modern-day fables.
Throughout his career, Velthuijs collaborated with prominent publishers and saw his books translated and performed in various media, including theater. In 2004, he was awarded the Hans Christian Andersen Medal for writing—one of the highest honors in children’s literature—for his enduring contribution to the field. In his acceptance speech, Velthuijs humbly reflected on the emotional complexity of his characters, acknowledging the mystery of creative inspiration. He passed away in his hometown of The Hague in 2005.

The story is illogical and boring. The frog tricked the bear into digging treasure, leading them trapped in a hole dug by themselves. When they’re rescued by their friends, the frog picked up a stone beside them, telling bear that’s the treasure they found. Because the stone has a long history…

The Frog and the Treasure by Max Velthuijs- Children’s book with coloured illustrations – Two friends, frog and the young bear were having breakfast. Frog told the bear to finish his breakfast quickly so that they could go together to dig a treasure. Both reached a spot. Young bear questioned him about how he was sure that there is a treasure below this place. Frog assured him about the treasure. They dug the place by taking turns. Frog was tired but he still dug fast. The frog called the young bear and told that he is throwing a stone. The young bear could not hear him. He lowered his head on the hole and looked in. He slipped and fell inside the hole. In order to come out both friends shouted and sang songs bur no one heard them. Next morning, a duck heard them. She saw them and called the mouse who arrived with a ladder. He pushed the ladder inside the hole. The ladder was a little short than the hole. First, the young bear climbed the ladder, he was pulled up by their friends. Next the frog climbed the ladder. He was also picked up by their friends. Both friends were thinking about the futility of the digging exercise. Just then, the mouse picked the stone which was thrown up by the frog. He rubbed the stone on his sleeve. The stone shined brightly. The mouse informed that this stone is 10,000- year old and is costly. Frog gifted the shinning stone to his friend young bear. Such stories are simple & educative for children, as they teach value of joint effort and friendship, therefore, I have rated this book as four star. I have read this book in Hindi language.

If you look up this book on Amazon you will see that Max Velthuijs is one of the best creators of children's book in the Netherlands. When you read a Frog book with your children you will understand why.

All of the stories of Frog and his friends will warm your heart and/or make you laugh. Luckily my son loves to read just as much as I do. I love our little quiet times when we just sit down together and read a story.

What I like the most about Frog is that there is a message in every book. In frog and the Treasure it is that you must always stay positive (which is a great match for this blog), everything will be OK and you will learn from your mistakes. Also, this is a story about a treasure. What can be more exciting for a child than a treasure hunt?! The drawings are fantastic. They are simple and that is perfect for your little ones.

There are plenty of Frog books on my son's bookshelves and I love every single one of them. When you have little children they will definitely enjoy these books. Luckily lots of them have been translated into English so you don't have to miss out on these great Dutch books.

Een lief verhaal met een mooi moraal.
Maar waar komt haas opeens uit tevoorschijn in het midden van het verhaal?
