Michael John Grist is a British/American author and ruins photographer who lives in London, UK. He writes dark and weird science fiction and fantasy books, such as the fantasy novel Ignifer’s Rise and the SF series The Ruins Sonata.
For 11 years he lived in Tokyo exploring Japan’s modern ruins, such as abandoned theme parks, military bases, and ghost towns, gaining millions of hits on this website with his photographs and stories.
The best of these adventures are now collected in his unique travel book Into the Ruins, which thriller bestseller Barry Eisler calls, “gorgeous, haunting, stunning.”
Now Michael enjoys working out in the gym, watching TV and movies, and of course writing stories and novels. He lives in London with his wife, and works as an academic English lecturer at university.
book 1: Quite an easy read except for the queasy parts which I almost had to put down! The story leaves some unanswered questions, and lends itself to more books, which I hope he writes soon! I was surprised by the plot twists; it seemed so simple at first! Interesting to wonder what I would do if I found myself in the main character's situation: the last man alive in a city full of zombies!!
book 2: The Lost expands on the first Zombie Ocean book, The Last, offering us a broader perspective, and actually answering several questions brought up by the first book!
We get to understand some characters' motives, and learn more about the zombies! True to Grist's style, some of the scenes were graphic, including some that required I take a break from reading..
This book is from the point of view of Anna, who was 5 when the zombie apocalypse occurred. We follow the story through her eyes most of the time. The characters are believable and likable, although some of the minor characters don't get full exposure in this book. Perhaps they will in the third Zombie Ocean!
book 3: Grist has again built a world out of a unique idea in this series of three books: The Last, The Lost, and The Least. It's a zombie apocalypse, but with an interesting twist! Taking place in the real world, in the not so distant future, readers may identify with famous landmarks in the United States in this book. (and with famous landmarks in Japan and Europe in The Lost)
The lead characters are well-developed, and well-loveable or well-hateable, depending on one's point of view. Given that this book fleshes out some plot points alluded to in the previous two books, I found myself wincing at times when I knew what would happen to my beloved characters. I don't want them to get hurt! But the painful moments give the characters reason to change, reason to fight to make things right.
This book lends itself to more stories, as not all the threads are complete by the end; I look forward to reading the next in this series!
This series will be like no other that you have read thus far in this genre. Grist has imagination and originality that is uncommon when writing a Zombie Apocalypse book. There is only so much a writer can do in this genre, yet Grist has gone well beyond the boundaries in this tale. I have read so many of this kind that its a rare and wondrous treat when I find myself saying aloud, "What the check just happened?" I had many of those moments as I read each book. I'm not going to give any details of the story line because I will not ruin the opportunity for you to say the same. Gist is an author I will definitely keep my eye on in the future. My hope is that he will continue blessing us with great books for years to come.
A must read for all sci fi fans. The zombie apocalypse has happened but all is not as it seems. Spanning from the very beginning to nearly ten years later you'll be gripped throughout. There are plenty of twists to keep you guessing. Also book four The Loss is out. Get all four and settle in for a marathon. You want want to stop until the end. I was lucky enough to receive advance review copies of all four books and can't wait for the next. Also if you like fantasy check out the ignifer cycle also by Michael John grist another excellent series.
Well thought out, creative, action packed, good characters! Great for readers that enjoy apocalyptic, zombie, alien, government conspiracy, end of the world genres! Satisfying read and I binge read books 1-3 and look forward to plowing through book 4!
This isn't your average zombie series. Amo was a graphic artist until a year ago when he went into a coma for two weeks and died several times. Now he has migraines and lots of other brain problems. Due to this he is told by his doctor to avoid any stimulation to give his brain time to heal. Cerulean was a diver heading for the Olympics when his coma struck. He was about to do a high level dive, fell off the side and landed half in the pool and half on the concrete severing his spine and almost drowning. His coma lasted about as long as Amo's and he died several times bit he came out of the coma a paraplegic. Lara is a barista at St. Cowleys, the coffee shop Amo visits daily and where he has been chosen as mayor of the coffee shop. When Amo asks Lara out , they don't know what they're bringing into the world. 5 year old Anna was in a coma too, now her dad is a zombie and she is all alone. What will happen to her? Now there's 10 million zombies and very few survivors. Lara is missing and Amo is heading to LA leaving little cairns guiding the survivors to where he's heading. Is Lara alive? What about Cerulean? All these questions and more will be answered through the series. The ending of book 3 OMG!! I had to grab book 4 up right away. I have to know what's going to happen to the survivors and who are the people in the bunker in Maine? What are they doing down in the bunker and why are they not infected too? This series rocks and when you find out what's going on you won't believe it!!! A totally different twist on the old zombie stories. Independent reviewer for Romance Authors That Rock. 5 pulse pounding hearts.
I read these books usually as ARC from the author. I fell behind on my reviews but you can frind in this blog reviews for these three books separately.
If you like zombies(and who doesn't?) you really need to read the Zombie Ocean series by Michael John Grist. His characters are well developed and the plot od not your typical zombie eating brains. In fact his books are more a commentary on human nature than zombie killing. I was hooked from Book 1:The Last and I am still hooked after Book 7: The Lash. The evolution of the characters as they grow is amazingly constructed. I know I have even questioned liking some of the characters as I got to know them more. I highly recommend these books and suggest you go to Mr' Grist's web page now! h
WOW what can I say this was totally not what I expected a total different take on the Zombie stories we read or watch on TV. The beginning of each book is a big draggy but before you know it the story takes sharp turn and drags you into the story and you are hooked and you find you can not set the books down. So the best I can say is be ready for a ride of your life and enjoy the NEW FORM OF ZOMBIES
Kobo - Title The Last Mayor; 773 pages (including estras - author interview, deleted scenes, cover art, extract from Book 4)
Book One: The Last (260 pages) Finished August 4 Book Two: The Lost (228 pages) Finished August 6 Book Three: The Least (238 pages) Finished August 8
First three (of nine) books in this series. A 'zombie outbreak' spreads rapidly from New York, leaving a tiny number of survivors. However, these zombies are not the typical shambling, cannibalistic brain-eating monsters - as we discover, along with Amo, the titular Last Mayor. As we follow Amo's progress across the US from New York to LA in the first book, and then Anna's in Book Two as she grows from an orphaned five year old to a young adult and in Book Three from Robert/Cerulean's point of view we gradually learn more about the outbreak.
This is a refreshingly different zombie series - and the revelations at the end of Book Three make it impossible not to continue reading this series...
I am so glad I found this series. It's a different view of the "end of the world as we know it" genre. I like the cast Mr. Grist has developed very much, with Anna my favorite for now. I was caught completely off guard when Anna left on her quest and made her eye opening discovery. On to the remainder of the series...I can't wait to see where this ride takes me. Well done Mr. Grist!
I read a lot of zombie books, but I have to say, I just loved the zombies in your books. This is a totally different way to look at the undead, and it really spoke to me. I enjoyed the characters, and the stories flowed really well. I will be recommending these books to all my friends. Also, I hope there are more books to come as I want to find out what happens next.
A brilliant collection of the first three books from The Last Major Series! I really enjoyed this! Well written, good story lines, developed characters! Great! Would recommend to anyone you likes zombies & fantasy!
Fun series. Amo’s story? Original and captivating. Anna’s story was almost as good to read. Cerulean’s story was tiring and I hardly finished it. Each story provides additional details in the whole plot, but I don’t really care anymore. Zombies. Commas. Red demons.
Can't get enough of this series!!! Anna and Cerulean are my favorite characters for sure. Where did Grist get the idea for this series?? Cant get enough!
It wasn't terrible, it just didn't quite do it for me. The first book was quite enjoyable. Books 2 and 3 went down hill rapidly and veered from the original concept.
I love this series! Not your average zombie story. Each book is in another character's point of view, so you get to see different perspectives throughout the apocalypse, yet they all merge together, so you still get to see your favorite characters again. Nothing is what you expect. Great series.
Amazing take on Zombies and the end of the world. Not what you expect ,though once started hard to put down, highly recommend, cannot wait to read the next
In the first book ... The Last .... we meet Amo, a comic book writer/lover who has survived the Zombie Apocalypse. He calls himself, humorously, the LMA or Last Mayor of America. He feels that he is alone ..... with 7 billion zombies. Will he survive??? He travels across the U.S. to California never expecting his travels to take on such an immensely chaotic ride. From killing zombies to becoming their friends - YES, FRIENDS! - and meeting other survivors who will become part of his 'family'. He is charming, witty, and ready to take on leading everyone into building a New L.A.
In the 2nd book ... The Lost ..... we meet Anna ... a little girl .... 5 years old. Anna's father is lost to the zombie world. She still travels with him and thousands of zombies who are walking towards California. After her father joins the rest of the 'dead' walking into the ocean, Anna is left alone. ... with 7 billion zombies ... will she survive? Join this little girl as she crosses back and forth across the U.S ... alone. How does this little girl survive in this new world? Could you?
In the 3rd book ... The Least ... we meet Robert 'Cerulean', an ex-Olympic diver. He has huge problems even before the Apocalypse happens. A horrific accident puts 'Cerulean' into a coma and he wakes up to find he is paralyzed and thinks his life is basically over. He meets Amo online in a virtual Amazon-like store where he aimlessly walks around getting products. Hmmmm. Ok. But, this is really an important part of the book so don't despair! Join Cerulean as he makes his way up the coast to New York where his travels take on an apocalyptic turn!!!! He wants to 'dive' off the Empire State Bldg. Cerulean is paralyzed, in a wheelchair, despondent, and alone ..... with 7 billion zombies .... will HE survive? Could you?
These 3 stories, individually, are a fantastic read. Together, they make up the core of this series. This is NOT your typical zombie apocalypse series/story. The reference to 'zombie ocean' will take on a meaning you will NOT have expected. When I read this twist, my mouth hung open and I was 'what?!?!?!'. After that, I was a dedicated fan! I can't wait to get into the other books!
A zombie apocalypse story with an amazing, inspired and unexpected twist! Nothing like you've ever read before! The story, the characters, are so REAL you can easily imagine you are right there in the story with them. A page-turner you won't want to put down.
While this book needs some improvement, I'm giving it 5 stars. I could NOT put this down! I found myself sneaking off to read a chapter to find out what was going to happen next - three books in and I need more!
This was my first zombie experience. I'm not sure what drew me in, I just know that after the first few chapters I was hooked. The characters you meet in the story become family, friends. You race to read the story to see what happens next. When you think you know what's going on and how the first book will end, the author shows his genius and sets you up for books 2 and 3. By now you must continue with the entire series. This is an amazing story that keeps you up nights trying to find out what will happen. The characters have depth and are average everyday people left in the world at the end. Where do they go from here? Will be reading book 4 to find out.
Can a zombie book be uplifting? Positive? Non-violent? Yes! Yes! It most certainly can. After reading so many dystopian tales that are in love with describing the power and minute details of it's weapons armory it was so refreshing to finally find one that wasn't like that.
While the second two books were well written they were faaaaar too dark for my taste. the violence gore and horror more than made up for the rosy bits in the first book.
i have always liked zombie series where over the course of the books you get to know each charecter a little better some of which you like some not so much in this instance most of the charecters seem to grow on you through the course of the books and the action scenes with amo seem as if they could be strait out of a rambo film he definetely knows his way around a gun or 2 anyway this is the first three books which is great value wherever you get them
I really loved the diversity in these books and the storyline was so fascinating but I just found it to be long, drawn out, and boring. There weren't many spelling or grammar errors so for those who need every single little thing detailed thoroughly in your novels, these books will be great for you. For me, I started to lose interest and skip through pages and somehow still managed to figure out what was going on. I wish much success to the author!
I don't write many book reviews, but I had to with this one. Amazingly unique take on the zombie apocalypse. Well developed characters that you really care about. I actually cried at the end of book one, something no zombie book has ever made me do. And while I got the box set for free, I will definitely be buying books 4 and 5.
Excellent writing. The character development was quite good. If you were placed in the End of the World As We No It, with almost no survivors how would you hold up from a psychological point of view. This was a well writen look at how it might be under these conditions.
A startling and fresh look at the zombie apocalypse.
It is an incredibly unique and inventive view of the zombie apocalypse as seen through the eyes of the protagonists. A wonderful RollerCoaster ride of emotion that leaves the reader wanting more!
This is such an awesome take on the normal apocalypse books. I can't say much without giving things away but I loved it! I finished book 3 and immediately went to start book 4. Gotta find out what happens next!!!! So intense. I highly recommend starting this series. You won't be disappointed!
Book 1:Amo's tale of his journey through the Apocalypse. Beautifully written, his worry of being the last man alive is palpable. It is a harrowing story of loss, fear and hope. Not for the squeamish, I devoured every word and immediately wanted to know what came next. Book 2:It's the second book and starts at the same time as the first, from the point of a five year old girl, Anna. We are led on her journey and see it all through her eyes. It's a good story of a very different type of zombie apocalypse. Normally there is fighting and lots of blood being spilled but that is not so for this book. It is simply thought provoking and, in general, made me feel very sad. That's not to say that it's a poor book, it just brings out different emotions to most of the genre. I found The Lost easier to read than The Last, maybe it's that Anna is a simpler character to understand and that I know already what has happened to the population. The book flows beautifully all the way through, the idea of travelling through an apocalypse as such a young child is delivered really well, with some very sweet moments as well as heartbreaking ones. More is discovered about the outbreak and exactly where everybody has gone and we also see some of the characters from The Last too. The new ending is, of course, a cliffhanger which leaves us looking forward to the next installment. Book 3: I stayed up until 3am reading this book, in fact I opened it the moment I received it, and it is absolutely not the least, it is the most. The most heartbreaking and thrilling book that I have read in a long time. Robert is an amazing character, the horrific struggles that he goes through, the loss and heartache. Most of all though, his strength and love shine from the pages. The story is harrowing, the suspense is perfectly done, with few clues as to what is going to happen next. Very graphic in places, it builds up to an amazing finale. I loved the first two books but this one has surpassed them both, and though it is in the zompoc genre the human element is what stayed with me.
