Short but vast read of one of the rare societies in history that has stimulated the attraction and reverence that are demanded by the legacy of the Greek city-state of Sparta. Covering 83 pages in length, the author presents the origins of Sparta, Sparta in the Archaic Period, the Classical Period, the Peloponnesian Wars, the Corinthian War, the Boeotian War, the decline of Sparta, and to include the Life and Society of a Spartan. The author shows how this legendary state, founded on complete devotion to the society and the exaltation of militaristic virtues, would become the preeminent force of ancient Greece, often rivaling the city of Athens.

Well organised and highly informative, this is an excellent insightful introduction book. The details of Spartan military campaigns are a bit sparse but to the benefit of a simple and clear exposition. A minor complaint is the lack of maps and an important dates timeline (one of my pet peeve in history books :). It is available in kindle format at a bargain price. Recommended.
