About the author

Max Velthuijs was a celebrated Dutch illustrator, painter, and author best known for his beloved Frog picture book series. Although he began illustrating children’s books relatively late in life, his work quickly gained international acclaim. His first major success came with A is een aapje in 1964, and he achieved global recognition with Frog in Love, published in 1989 by Andersen Press after it was initially rejected in Europe. The Frog series, which eventually included over twenty titles, became known for its gentle, heartfelt storytelling and philosophical depth, earning Velthuijs comparisons to modern-day fables.
Throughout his career, Velthuijs collaborated with prominent publishers and saw his books translated and performed in various media, including theater. In 2004, he was awarded the Hans Christian Andersen Medal for writing—one of the highest honors in children’s literature—for his enduring contribution to the field. In his acceptance speech, Velthuijs humbly reflected on the emotional complexity of his characters, acknowledging the mystery of creative inspiration. He passed away in his hometown of The Hague in 2005.

This is a really sweet book that I came across on SBT2. I wanted to review it because I think it is gorgeous! This book is written by a Dutch author and tells the story of Frog who has a funny feeling inside; his heart is beating faster than normal and he cant understand whats wrong with him. He talks to his friends and Hare diagnoses him as being in love! But who could he be in love with? Well it turns out he is in love with Duck. But when he tries to tell Duck how he feels he gets tongue tied and shy. Lots of people can relate to that! So instead of talking to her, Frog sends anonymous gifts to Duck and leaves presents on her door step.However he soon realises that this is getting him no where. He tries to impress duck by jumping really high but then has a terrible fall. Luckily for Frog, Duck steps in to nurse him, and they finally get the opportunity to tell each other how they really feel!
Other characters in the story think that things cant work out between Frog and Duck because he is green and she is white; a nice underlying message about how people of all appearances can and should be friends (inter-racial relationships). Frog and Duck live happily ever after, therefore proving these characters wrong.
There are no human characters in this story and I love how the author uses animals to discuss the human emotion of love. I read this story to a year 1 class but it would also be suitable for Year 2 and reception class. A lovely book to read at any time but particularly useful in a SEAL,PSHE or religion class. It could be used as part of a circle time discussion on emotions and love, why people sometimes feel the way they do and what they can do to express these feelings.The author presents a delicate, emotional issue in a really simple way, at a child's level. This book is part of a a series of books about Frog. I loved this book!

Originally published in the Netherlands as Kiker is verliefd, this charming picture-book is the first in Dutch author/artist Max Velthuijs' acclaimed Frog series, and follows its eponymous ranine hero as he discovers the pleasure and pain of love. Feeling rather odd, and distinctly uncomfortable, Frog isn't sure just what the trouble is, until his friend Hare diagnoses the problem: he's in love! After the first euphoria of this discovery, Frog sets out to discover just who he is love with, and, that done, how he might woo her...

There is an understated humor to this story that I found immensely appealing: Frog's enthusiasm, when Hare diagnoses his 'condition,' and then his search for an object for his affections, really had me chuckling. Frog's courtship of Duck was endearing - all the more so, given his shyness, when it came to actually declaring himself - and the conclusion of the tale, which highlights the fact that love can flourish across all kinds of difference (of color, of species), was most welcome. The artwork, with its bright colors and simple composition, was very appealing. All in all, a lovely start to another froggie series - one better known in Europe, I suspect, than here in the states.

NOTE: The English translation of Kiker is verliefd, done by Anthea Bell, was published in the USA the same year as the original (1989), and then reprinted in this miniature British edition in 2003. I have compared the two editions (I own the miniature edition from Andersen Press, and took the Farrar Strauss Giroux edition out of my local library), and found them to be almost identical. The text was arranged somewhat differently on the page, in the miniature edition, due to space constraints, but there was only one actual change in text, toward the end of the book. When Frog crashes to the ground, and Duck comes to his rescue, the full-sized edition reads: "Frog could hardly walk. Supporting him carefully, she took him home with her. She nursed him with tender loving care." This has been changed, in the miniature edition, to "Frog could hardly walk. Duck took him home with her and nursed him." I have no idea why this one sentence (and no other) was changed...

Kikker-klassieker over liefde.

Kikker voelde zich vreemd.
Hij moest lachen en huilen tegelijk.
En zijn hart klopte van boem-boem, boem-boem.
Varkentje dacht dat hij kou had gevat
Maar Haas wist wat er met Kikker aan de hand was.
'Je bent verliefd,' zei hij.

Het verhaal is zeer geschikt om gesprekken uit te lokken over verliefdheid en gevoelens, zeker bij jongere kinderen. Dat was ook even nodig bij onze Jayden. De meisjes vinden hem wel erg leuk.

Het boek is groter van formaat dan de andere boeken van kikker. Dit vond ik prettiger voorlezen. Was ook makkelijker om vast te houden. En ziet er mooi uit, de tekeningen likken ook reactie en verhalen uit bij de kleinkinderen, zeker een aanrader.

Just got this from my friend. He actually wanted to give this book to my sons..but he did not realize nor notice its title before buying it during a bookfair in Amsterdam :)
'Frog in Love' yes, a green creature that got heartbeat speeded up and hot and cold turns..according to a hare, it means that the frog is in love!

"The frog is in love with the pretty, nice lovely white duck!"..Love knows no boundaries!

And..... I think I won't read the story to my sons at this time being :)

Hace mucho que no leía un libro infantil y me la pase buscando este libro por toda mi casa porque recordaba que lo tenia.
Hermoso libro y hermosa historia sobre un sapo que no sabe que tiene hasta que descubre que esta enamorado de una pata que según los otros animales no puede amar, pero sapo nos enseña que para el amor no hay fronteras.
Hermosos mensajes se encuentran en hermosos libros infantiles, esa es la lección de hoy.

Verliefd zijn, een onderwerp wat voor jonge kinderen nog heel erg abstract is. Ze weten zelf niet echt wat verliefd zijn is maar horen en zien er wel veel over. In dit boek wordt verliefd zijn op een mooie, vragende manier beschreven. Kikker geeft aan dat hij verward is en beschrijft daarbij zijn emoties. Echter vind ik het jammer dat ze niet het rare gevoel in je buik, ofwel 'vlinders in je buik' hebben, beschrijven. Dit is toch wat vaak het meest wordt aangegeven als gevoel van verliefdheid.

Wel laat het zien dat je gekke dingen gaan doen als je verliefd bent. Dit om indruk te maken op degene waarop je verliefd bent.

Wat ik het allermooiste vind aan het boek is dat ze heel duidelijk laten blijken dat het niet uitmaakt hoe je er uit ziet om verliefd op elkaar te kunnen en mogen zijn. Ze beschrijven dit in het boek als groen en wit. Je zou dit boek na kunnen bespreken en dit koppelen aan huidskleur of homoseksualiteit. In mijn ogen kun je hier kinderen niet jong genoeg bewust van maken dat dit heel normaal is.

Wat ik een minpunt vind aan dit boek, overigens aan alle boeken van Kikker, is dat er (te) vaak zinnen in staat met: 'zegt kikker/haas/rat' o.i.d. In mijn beleving is dit soms overbodig en lees het daarom minder vlot. Bij het voorlezen heb ik zelf de neiging om dit soms over te slaan.

Kikker voelt zich vreemd. Haas weet hem te vertellen dat Kikker verliefd is. Varkentje vraagt op wie Kikker dan verliefd is. Na een poosje nagedacht te hebben antwoord kikker op die lieve, mooie, schattige Eend. Kikker maakt een mooie tekening voor Eend en schuift die onder haar deur. De dag erna legt hij bloemen voor haar deur. Hij is te verlegen om Eend te vertellen dat hij verliefd op haar is. Om indruk op haar te maken besluit hij daarom het record hoog springen te verbreken. Daarbij valt hij en eend neemt hem onderhanden. Daarna zijn ze onafscheidelijk.

Wat ik ervan vond;
Ik vind de verhaaltjes van Kikker nog altijd leuk om te lezen. In de verhalen van Kikker worden altijd bepaalde onderwerpen besproken in een vorm die kinderen begrijpen. In dit verhaal gaat het over verliefd zijn. Ik vind het mooi dat via deze verhaaltjes kleine kindjes zich hiervan bewust worden. Verder is het gewoon super leuk om te lezen wat Kikker allemaal meemaakt samen met de andere dieren. En in dit verhaal is het leuk om te lezen wat Kikker allemaal doormaakt en wat hij allemaal doet om indruk te maken op Eend.

'Kikker is verliefd' had ik vorig jaar gebruikt als uitgangspunt om te oefenen voor mijn voorleeslessen. In dit boek wordt er regelmatig gebruik gemaakt van stemmetjes. Zo kon ik oefenen met verschillende stemmen. Daarnaast is kikker heel beweeglijk. Zo staat er dat kikker 'een hele grote sprong' maakte . Toen maakte ik ook een sprong terwijl ik aan het voorlezen was. De reactie hierop was heel positief en ik kwam tot de conclusie. Heey, dit vinden de kinderen leuk. Hiermee maak ik het voorlezen leuker.

Wat ik daarnaast ook mooi vind aan dit boek is de ethiek. Zo zij varkentje tegen kikker : "Een kikker kan niet verliefd zijn op een eend. Jij bent groen en zij is wit ".

Hier zou je een heel mooi gesprek over kunnen voeren met leerlingen uit groep 1 of 2.

Hieruit kan je bijvoorbeeld halen dat je bij liefde niet naar het uiterlijk hoeft te kijken.

Door de mooie boodschap die ik in dit verhaal heb gezien, de leuke plaatjes en het verhaal geef ik dit kinderboek vijf sterren.

De prentenboeken van Max Velthuis vind ik eigenlijk allemaal goed. Er staan mooie tekeningen in het prentenboek, waardoor het verhaal tot leven komt.
In het boek worden emoties herkend en erkend en wordt er over gevoelens gesproken. Prachtig om het met leerlingen over emoties te hebben d.m.v. een boek. Kikker vraagt ook hulp aan zijn vrienden, zij helpen hem ook met het herkennen van zijn emoties. In dit boek gaat het over verliefd zijn, wat gebeurt er met je als je verliefd bent?
Het is een boek dat goed aansluit bij de themaweek lentekriebels.
Het boek gaat ook over verliefd worden op iemand die niet hetzelfde is als jij. In dit geval gaat het om Eend, zij is wit, en Kikker, hij is groen. Op een speelse manier wordt in dit boek benoemd dat je ook verliefd kan worden op iemand die niet hetzelfde is als jij.
Het leuke is dat er over dit verhaal ook een kort filmpje gemaakt is, dit sluit leuk aan bij het voorleesverhaal.

“Kikker zit aan de oever van de rivier. Hij voelt zich vreemd. Hij weet niet of hij gelukkig is of bedroeft. Al dagenlang loopt hij rond alsof hij droomt. Wat is er toch met hem aan de hand?”

Zo begint Max Velthuijs zijn Kikker-debuut! Eentje van velen! Eentje van die geliefde serie.

Dat Velthuijs meteen met zo’n trendsetter de markt op zou komen had ik eerlijk gezegd niet verwacht. Kikker blijkt verliefd, maar op wie? En hoe moet je daarmee omgaan? Het boekje behandelt dat je liefde tot grote hoogte kan stijgen, hele grote hoogte. En Velthuijs weet daarmee precies de juiste woorden te vinden!

Het mooiste aan het boek vind ik echt de voorkant! Door de setting met de viool (die je overigens niet terugvind in het boekje zelf) geeft het meteen een romantische sfeer. Geen wonder dat het vaak over de toonbank gaat!

Verliefdheid is een voorkomende emotie, ook bij kinderen. Het is daarom goed dat erover gesproken wordt.
Ik vond het een mooi boek voor kinderen. Ik kan me voorstellen dat kinderen hier lacherig op reageren en benieuwd zijn naar het verloop van het verhaal. Ik vond het mooi om te lezen dat Varkentje dacht dat je niet verliefd kon worden op een iemand die niet van 'jouw soort' is. Later in het boek wordt er terugverwezen naar deze uitspraak. Er wordt duidelijk gemaakt dat Kikker en Eend samen gelukkig waren ondanks dat zij van een ander soort waren en beide een andere kleur hadden.
Ik vind het belangrijk dat kinderen van kleins af aan al meekrijgen dat zij verliefd mogen zijn op wie zij dat willen.

Frog is apparently sick and can't understand why only when he is 'diagnosed' with love does he find a focus for his love and essentially says 'I guess it must be duck, she's pretty' then follows a heavy handed metaphor for love across cultural borders when his friends say 'you can't love her you're green and she's white' but never a mention of what makes her lovable and worth fighting for she's just pretty and the object of his love. It's a bad stereotypical depiction of love (loss of appetite, butterflies in the stomach, hot and cold etc.) and it treats the female as an object not a full human being.

Little readers will be surprised by the adventures of a very bouncy protagonist. Simple and tender, with nice illustrations and a nice message.

In Kikker is verliefd is een voorlees boek voor de onderbouw. In het verhaal gaat het over Kikker die verliefd wordt op iemand, maar hij snapt zelf niet wat er aan de hand is en op wie hij dan verliefd is. Tijdens het verhaal leren de kinderen meer over gevoelens, en vooral over verliefdheid. Ze krijgen te horen hoe je er mee om kan gaan, en hoe je het kan uiten en beschrijven. Sommige kinderen vinden het lastig omdat ze het niet snappen, maar dit kan ze verder helpen. Als laatst leren ze dat het niet uitmaakt van wie je houdt, of ze nou groen of wit zijn.

EL libro es lindo para niños de 6-10 años.
Trata de un sapo que al principio no entiende las nuevas sensaciones físicas que está experimentando hasta que le explican que lo que le ocurre es que está enamorado.
Si bien el relato es bonito, no me gusta que el sapo de enamora de una pata blanca y no de una sapa. Me gusta que se le enseñe a los niños a respetar las diferencias y que nos podemos querer entre todos, pero cada uno manteniendo su identidad, no mezclándonos.

Kikker is verliefd gaat over Kikker die op een dag wakker wordt met gevoelens die hij niet helemaal kan thuis brengen. Uiteindelijk komt hij erachter dat hij verliefd is op Eend, maar durft dit niet te zeggen. In ieder geval niet voor dat Kikker van Eend hoort dat zij van hem houdt. Net zo als in de tekenfilms van Kikker, stuit kikker zoals gewoonlijk op nieuwe gevoelens. Goed boek mijn inziens om bepaalde emoties te bespreken met kinderen.

Een leuk boekje dat het verhaal van kikker verteld die dit keer verliefd is. Het onderwerp wordt op een leuke manier verteld die voor kinderen goed te begrijpen is. Er wordt ook duidelijk gemaakt dat je verliefd kan worden op iedereen en dat "soort"daarbij niet uit maakt. Het boekje leert kinderen dus ook een goede les.

Ik vind de boeken van Kikker allemaal erg leuk om voor te lezen bij de kleuters. Kikker is verliefd was wel echt mijn favoriet doordat het verhaal over verliefd zijn zo mooi beschreven is, met de bijbehorende sprekende illustraties, voor kleine kinderen. Na de lunch, sommige kinderen waren nog net niet helemaal klaar, ging ik altijd voorlezen. Heel vaak was dat een boekje van Kikker.

Een prachtig verhaal! Door middel van het verhaal komen de kinderen in aanraking
met verschillende gevoelens en hoe je daarmee om kan gaan. De achterliggende
gedachte over dat liefde geen grenzen kent ongeacht huiskleur of verschillen, is
prachtig. De illustraties sluiten mooi aan bij de belevingswereld van de kinderen.

Frog feels unwell and his friends diagnose him as being in love. He decides he is in love with duck, but he is told that ducks and frogs can’t be in love….
