Flightless is book two in the Fairy, Texas series by Margo Bond Collins. This book is being released both as part of the anthology, Enchanted: The Fairy Revels Collection, and by itself. This book was generously provided to me in exchange for an honest review by the author. To date this is the only book in this anthology I have read and my rating is based only on the one book.
When I first read book one in this series, Fairy, Texas, I was completely floored. It was amazing, which is often my reaction when reading one of Margo’s books. So I was so excited to get to read the next installment, and let me tell you, it did not disappoint.
“I can dream all I want, but in the end, I’m still flightless.”
This book is told from both Laney and Josh’s point of views. It directly follows book one. It’s been a few weeks since the big event which put Josh in the hospital after losing his wings. During Josh’s stay in the hospital, Laney has been in training, trying to learn how to control her powers. It is the first day both Josh and Laney will return to high school and Laney is a nervous wreck. The guilt she feels is overwhelming after what happened to Josh. She feels like it’s somehow her fault. It seems like Josh must feel the same way because he looks at her with nothing but anger and he’ll have nothing at all to do with her.
Laney’s relationship with her step sister is better, not perfect, but better. That’s one thing (out of many) that I loved about this book. We see tons of growth with these two’s relationship. Kayla went from being the evil stepsister to a kick butt addition to their little group.
Not only is Laney trying to adjust to being back in school and all the changes in her life, there is a new visitor to Fairy, Texas. A man claiming to be her father comes to town saying he wants to get to know her. Why, though, is he suddenly interested in getting to know her after all these years? After she hasn’t heard from him since she was a little girl? Does he really just want to get to know her or does he want something else from her?
Even though things are very strained between Laney and Josh, they along with Mason and Kayla, are forced to work together to get to the bottom of things. And they are once again thrust into danger as they attempt to save their town and themselves.
This book, as the first was, is a nail biter most definitely. And I absolutely loved the ending. It was just beautiful. I do recommend reading the first book. But then what a fabulous way to read this sequel then as part of an anthology? You get Flightless along with eight other stories by eight other authors to enjoy. I hope you enjoy Fairy, Texas as much as I did.
Loving this collection so far. I haven't had a chance to read all the novellas, mostly because I'm dragging out the pleasure of reading them. I can honestly say that Olivia Wildenstein's "Rose Petal Graves" and B. Brumley's "Woe for a Faerie" are two incredible stories. Fast-paced, magical (as they should be), with just the right amount of romance. Both are compulsively readable, have really vivid characters and wonderful plots, and settings that literally jump off the pages. I'm looking forward to sinking my teeth in the other novellas.
With only half a book left to finish in this set, I can honestly say that this has been an enjoyable set of books. Each one holds it's own way of writing skills from each author. The talent that each one shows is amazing. Easy to fall into the book and escape the reality of the world. Recommend these highly!
This box set of fantasy stories was simply delightful. I was looking for an escape from my non-magical life and chose these stories. What a treat!
The stories include:
I Do Believe in Faeries by Erin Hayes The Bee Charmer by Poppy Lawless Woe for a Faerie by B. Brumley Flightless by Margo Bond Collins Rose Petal Graves by Olivia Wildenstein Fairly Normal by Carrie L. Wells Fae Came on the Plane by Elizabeth Watasin The Fae and the Farmgirl by Pauline Creeden The Fairy Bargain by Blaire Edens
My favorite story has got to be The Fae and the Farmgirl.
The Fae and The Farm Girl by Pauline Creeden sets up a wonderful world in which Daisy Adams discovers she's not who she has always believed herself to be. In the span of a moment, her world was turned on it's head when the uncle who raised her gave her news she never would have expected.
Creeden's story is a wonderful beginning into Daisy's discovery of being Fae and all that it entails. I look forward to reading more of Daisy's journey as she discovers who she really is.
