Rate this book
Nirvelli is determined to wipe out any bit of happiness she has. Her life in the Tribe might have been ideal once upon a time—but three years ago one rebellious act ruined everything. Now she only wants out. Can she escape without destroying everyone she loves?

Kane has lived for over three hundred years with his companion Spirit Wolf. He’s known love. He’s known hate. Never has he run across a woman like Velli. Never has his Wolf cared one way or another whom he bedded or loved.

Until her. The Wolf has declared her his mate. Can Kane say the same? If he finally admits it, will his Healing magic be enough to save the deeply wounded Nirvelli?

A broken law leads to great tragedy, and their separation. Velli finds new levels of danger and loss on her own. Kane struggles to find her, but he may already be too late.

Hi! I’m Sarah Cass, author, nurse, mom of three, wife, and caretaker of six spoiled rescue cats. I’ve been writing stories for over 20 years, and they tend to get a little spicy, a little emotional, and a little mysterious—just the way I like them.

My published series include:
• The Dominion Falls Series – spicy historical western mystery/suspense (10 books & counting!)
• Holidays in Lake Point - A sweet small-town standalone romance collection (all set around holidays!)
• The Tribe – a shifter-based urban fantasy/paranormal romance
• And coming soon: Dark Sky Valley, a contemporary western romance set in the present-day version of Dominion Falls!

When I’m not writing or working as a nurse, you’ll find me crocheting, knitting, watching Friends or Star Trek for the millionth time, or plotting my family's next move—hopefully to Colorado!

Let’s connect—I love chatting with readers and fellow book nerds

A blend of shifter romance and urban fantasy, this book exceeded my expectations. I'm not always the biggest romance fan so the fact that this had a solid plot with more than a hint of mystery really helped to sell it for me, not to mention the interesting nods to Native American culture in its setting. I loved the fact that the author went to the effort of including a dictionary of commonly used terms and phrases, it really showed how much thought had gone into the world building behind this series.
Our heroine is Nirvelli, a diminutive bundle of pain and anger, who is part of the America's Tribe of Shifters, however her ability to shift to wolf form is unlike that of other members of the tribe, and this both confuses and scares her. Despite marrying her childhood friend Reed, she finds herself drawn to a travelling Healer, and when his wolf calls to hers, it seems like only her determination to punish herself will keep them apart and prevent them from breaking one of the cardinal rules of the tribe.
As well as the shifter aspect to the story, there are also some magical elements, and this added a nice extra dimension, as well as gave me some hints as to where the rest of the series may go.
Despite the tribal setting of the shifters, there is a very modern feel to the book ,and it is not afraid to tackle some difficult topics head on.
I'm intrigued to see where the story of Nirvelli and Kane will go next and look forward to reading the next book soon so that I can find out the answers to some of the questions I have about the wider world of the series.

First book in a new shifter series and wow! it's good. Intense, spiritual, magical and sad. The main female character is mixed up, confused and often suffers a deep depression due to something that happened a few years previous. Two main male characters are opposites of each other, one is very much alpha male and all wolf, the other while still being strong is more sensitive and calm. Reed is human/stag and has loved Veli since they were very young, told by the elders that they were destined mates at first they had no reason to doubt. As they grew though they have sensed that though they love each other it is more of a kinship type of love. Kane on the other hand, as soon as he and his wolf sense Veli and her wolf there is a connection. The writer weaves an interesting, sometimes complex story that you just have to keep reading. The scenery is described vividly as are the actual scenes themselves. The animals sound beautiful. This is a continuing series so do not expect an ending, it continues in the next book so it is in no way a stand alone. You need to commit to reading all the books to get the full story, though personally I feel it is worth doing so. I love the whole mix of human animal shifters, magic and spirits as well as the normal human aspect of the story. Nothing about this for you to get bored with in any way.

This book is an intense, emotional roller coaster. It is full of magical battles, a few laughs and lots of tears. You will need a box of tissues handy.
The Tribe are Native American shifters who live cut off from the outside world. They are very in touch with the spiritual side of their natures.
Our heroine, Nirvelli is depressed and distracted. She should be happy, in a very short time she is going to marry Reed, the man she has loved for years. Velli's problem is the huge burden of shame and guilt she carries. Even with her magic and her wolf, she still feels something is very wrong.
Kane has come to the Tribe's lands to help heal his magic , and maybe get his mate some extra help. If Lily can't learn to control her magic Kane will have to kill her.
The attitude of the tribal elders has caused Velli trouble ever since her first change. That was also when the depression started. When the new people turn up , things for our heroine go from bad to worse in some ways, and improve in another.
Kane is a very old and arrogant wolf, used to doing what he wants and getting everything his own way. He is very powerful but so are others in the Tribe.
I found this a very hard book to put down and look forward to the next one.

didn't think i was going to enjoy this book at first but oh boy once it got going i loved it & couldn't put it down .nirvelli & reed have always known they belonged together after all their parents & all the tribe of shifters they grew up with knew it. just before the wedding one of the oldest known shifters comes to the tribe with his "mate" lily , a troubled bobcat shifter . before she knows it kane has turned her life upside down , her spirit wolf recognises kanes wolf as her mate . for nirvelli this is just one more cross to bear in a world where she feels undeserving of love . a great emotional ride as nervelli , reed, kane & lilys relationships get played out for all the tribe to see & judge . the tribes punishment is harsh & cruel on both nirvelli & her wolf . it drives nirvelli to enter the white mans world with dire consequences for her & ultimately her friends . can't wait for book 2

This is the first book I have read by Sarah Cass. Her style of writing is confident and the book is well written. This book is the start of a new series about a tribe of Native American shifters, who live in a community cut off from the outside world. On the face of it this would be my favourite type of paranormal book. The author introduces, what feels like all the characters for the whole series in the first few chapters. This makes for the first 40% of the book very confusing. You meet Nirvalli, the main female character, who is married to Reed but is in love with Kane who in turn is with Lily. Both Nirvalli and Kane are wolf shifters and their wolf's are declare they are mates. Nirvalli is convinced that the spirits hate her and wish her harm, and that's why she must leave the tribe. Depressed and riddled with anxiety Nirvalli runs leaving no trace behind. Time starts to run out for Kane and his spirit wolf to find her. This is all in the first half of the book. The chapters jump from Nirvalli, to Kane, to Reed, to the tribe elders back to Nirvalli. All very confusing. The second half of the book, which is Kanes search for Nirvalli and the realisation of his love, flows wonderfully and you get caught up in his search. It's clear what is happening and offers reasons why. I really enjoyed the second half but the first just introduces too much to soon. This is a series so I can only take it that Sarah Cass wanted to lay out the table so to speak. Because of this I found it hard to understand and get to know who Nirvalli was and why she felt the way she did. I liked the character but just felt I had missed a huge section.
As I said I liked the way Sarah Cass writes and like her style. But I just found the first half too jumbled and confusing, which in turn spoilt the second half. I would read other books by Sarah and probably will read book two, in hope it gives clarification to who is what and how in book one.
Because of the confusing first half I feel I could only give 3.5 stars. This isn't anything against the author, I like her style and will read other books by her. I just found this book jumped all over the place and was confusing.

~~~~~~~~~~Dee's ★★★★ Review~~~~~~~~~~
An intense, dark psychological drama of epic proportions. Velli is a Native American wolf shifter lost in deep depression with self loathing, regret and an innate ability for self sabotage. Being privy to her thoughts is a walk through crazy town. The leaders do a number on her that sends her running off the reservation into the white world. There she falls prey to sinister forces, the extent of which she is unaware. Kane is an Elder wolf shifter with complicated circumstances that is determined to rescue and heal her. An exhausting, roller coaster ride of emotions with an unresolved conclusion.
This Urban Fantasy Paranormal Romance was not what I was expecting right out of the gate. I was very surprised at the glossary to help us understand certain terms and thought there has to be a Native American bent to the book and I was very pleasantly surprised to see this was indeed the case. Knowing 'The Tribe' are shifters, but then watching at least one use some Elemental Magic to some degree was neat. Who is this warrior Kane and his mate that have come back to the Tribe? What does this mean for Nirvelli and her soon to be mate? What has happened in Velli's life that has made her so hateful of 'The Spirits' and their guidance? Why does she feel she is not worthy of her best friend and betrothed? Will we ever find out what is going on with Velli? We see bits and pieces of things, about her, and Reed, and Kane, and others that help us start to see a little better picture. Half way through the book and I weep for Velli and what has happened to her, especially after promises that she would not be hurt, and it feels like she was hurt in the worst possible way. My chest hurts, my heart breaking for her. It is as if I am her, feeling the pain and betrayal. What happens when Velli finds herself in a mall, waiting to meet with someone? When Dr. Adams finds her, who is he and what does he want? What kind of job is Velli working? What happens when the moon comes? What does Dr. Adams offer Velli? Will Kane, Reed, and Lily find her again? You're going to have to read to find out what happens to Velli and the others after they leave the reservation.
