“Dirty.”
“I blame you.”
"Oh, you were like this when I found you."
She laughed, and the lovely sound of it filled parts of him he hadn’t realized were empty.
Shit. He was a goner.
“Did I tell you to get in the water?”
She smothered a laugh. “I didn’t realize this was going to turn into a game of Luke Says.”
“Oh, but it is. Luke says stand there so I can look at you.”
“Where should I take you?”
“Does it matter?” she said quietly. “If you dump my body on the side of the highway no one will care.”
“Come on, now. Friends? Family? There are people who care about you.”
“How do you know that? You don’t even know who I am.”
“People would care,” he said stubbornly, feeling like he’d suddenly turned into a suicide hotline counselor. “I’d care even if we’d never met.”
“You’re nice for a kidnapper.”
“I’m big on consent,” he went on, rubbing a hand over the stubble on his jaw. “Drunk means no.”
She flushed, her cheeks going bright pink. “I’m not usually a sloppy drunk, but I was feeling a little off last night. Thank you for being a gentleman.”
“Don’t thank me,” he said, uncomfortable. “No woman should have to feel thankful a man didn’t victimize her.”
“Lovely Ophelia, you blow my fucking mind.”
There was no polite lie in his voice. He sounded amazed. By her.
