Lehtola kuvaa havainnollisesti saamelaistaiteen vaiheet kalliopiirroksista ja suullisesta perinteestä kirjallisiin muotoihin ja nykytaiteisiin. Runsas kuvitus korostaa nykysaamelaisen kulttuurin moninaisuutta.

This is the first book you should get if you’re interested in an introduction to learning more about the Sámi people. Professor Lehtola is a North Sámi and his short book is the best introduction to the Sámi people and the history of their lands and culture that you can find in English. He covers the important changes that have faced his people over the past few hundred years, paying particularly close attention to the activist and artistic movements that are rejuvenating the indigenous communities of Northern Scandinavia.

In reading the discussion of Sámi art traditions in this book, I was particularly struck by a quote from Valkeapää, who said, “The essential for a Sámi artist has always been that they work in many areas of art. Earlier the reason was that you had to be able to do almost everything. Now the reason is more prosaic; in Sápmi you can’t make a living from just one art form.” The worldview of the Sámi celebrates the interconnectedness of everything and even their approach to artistic expression demonstrates how you cannot thrive in one area of life without nurturing all areas of your life.

Great book on the past and close to present on the Sámi (the indigenous people of the Nordic world) I haven’t come across much else about them in English, but this one is great.

Oh I couldn't finish this. That makes me sad because it's very historical and factual and written by a Sami author, and I just get really bored. It's really a textbook.

This book offers a satisfying introduction to the Sami people, written by a Sami. It's well worth reading for that. The scope is a bit limited, offering surveys specifically on national history, historical and contemporary politics, and modern art.

I was not a fan of the style, conceptual organization, or visual layout of the book. It's big, floppy, and glossy and laid out like a magazine, with a few nice photos, but I feel like it was too ambitious and a simpler format would have been better.

This is a great read if you're looking for historical information about the Sámi people. I was a little disappointed as this was assigned to me as an ethnography and due to the author being from the region being studied and also his lack of interviews of any Sami persons, I wouldn't actually consider this to be an ethnography. However I loved how readable this book was and I found the author's writing style to be thoroughly enjoyable.

Se oli vaan ok. Olihan siinä tietoa, mutta aiheesta olisi voinut saada eläväisemman version. Painoksessa oli myös muutama ihmeellinen lause, joiden merkitys jäi epäselväksi ja kerran yksi kappale toistui kokonaan. Mutta mahtaako olla toista tällaista laajaa saamelaisia koskevaa kirjaa?

Fascinating and comprehensive look at the history, culture, politics, struggles and art of the Sami. But it wasn't a particularly organized book - not much of a narrative. Kind of like a really long Wikipedia entry.
