Immediately. Let’s go. Right away. Now. Get up. Then … Mark’s narrative moves quickly and you sense the action in the story of Jesus’ life. It’s teaching presented as the gospel – good news powerfully announced in a world of bad news. This gospel emphasizes not only that Jesus is “the Son of God” (1:1; 15:39) but also that this fact demands a response. The Gospel of Mark highlights Jesus’ unparalleled spiritual power and authority, leading us to consider for ourselves the question, “Who do you say that I am?” (Mark 8:29) The Gospel of the Jesus we’re aching for partners the compassion of Jesus with the passion of Christ. We see how the heart of God is moved by the heart of humanity and His response to our loud cry for help. We discover the world-changing result of being recipients of His compassion and the reason for His passion, all the way to the cross. Ultimately, Mark intends for the action-packed presentation of who Jesus is to lead us to acknowledge Jesus, find salvation in Him, and follow Him.
Lisa Harper is a hilarious storyteller and theological scholar―a gifted communicator whose writing and speaking overflows with colorful, pop-culture references that connect the dots between the Bible era and modern life. “Her God-given ability to not merely teach the Word but package it in a way that stirs the heart and calls to action is incomparable” says Priscilla Shirer. For six years Lisa served as the director of Focus on the Family's national women's ministry where she created the popular Renewing the Heart conferences. The next six years found her serving on the local level as the women's ministry director at a large church in Nashville. As the author of eleven books, and a Masters of Theological Studies with honors from Covenant Seminary, she is now a sought-after Bible teacher and speaker. Lisa was on the Women of Faith national arena tour and speaks at many other large events as well as at hundreds of churches all over the world. Lisa describes her greatest accomplishment to date as getting to be Missy’s mama.
I found this book/study to be an excellent read. This would be good for the beginner to someone wanting to really dig in further to the book of Mark. The study pulled out thoughts and questions I really hadn't thought about before even though I have studied the Bible for many years. I think Lisa did an excellent job with the writing and the questions that made me think deeper. I highly recommend this.
I enjoyed the last bible study I did by Lisa Harper, but this one just didn’t strike a chord with me. A solid half of it was personal stories that didn’t seem to tie in really well with the Bible texts.
Lisa Harper has a different style than many bible teachers. She’s humorous and a bit sarcastic here and there, and at first it threw me off. Her real ness and her vulnerability, her ability to reach out and connect made this bible study such a good one.
It felt a little chaotic. They were so many personal stories and anecdotes that it pulled me out of the study rather than drawing me in. I don’t feel like I actually spent much time IN my Bible during this study.
Awesome look into Mark by Lisa Harper! She is both funny and wildly intelligent so it’s a smooth read. I did this in my women’s group along with the videos.
While I enjoyed the videos that accompanied this study, I found the book lacked clear direction. It felt disjointed and didn’t match the quality and learning of the video content.
This is a powerful study of the Gospel of Mark. Lisa Harper is an excellent teacher. I especially enjoyed hearing about her life experiences. The stories of how she adopted a little girl from Haiti was inspirational. Your life will be changed for the better after doing this study.
This video-based study just didn't quite hit the mark for me. There were some interesting articles on the history of some things in Bible times like divorce, crucifixions, etc., but many of the questions I didn't care for. This was more of a study on certain stories in Mark rather than the book as a whole.

Probably one of my most favorite studies in terms of video teaching. Lisa Harper is an amazing teacher and speaker. For study content, I would give it a B. She does not go verse by verse, and also skips some sections entirely. Format: 7 video sessions, around a half hour each. 6 weeks of homework, with four sections in each week.
I thoroughly enjoyed this study (and accompanying video series). I now only wish Peter and Mark weren't so brief and that the book of Mark were longer. But, then again it wouldn't be the book of Mark, unique to the other gospels. Looking forward to more of Harper's studies. Her passion for the Word is inspiring.
Lisa Harper shared honestly with personal experience, Biblical insight and humor. She encourages us to look inside ourselves and sincerely see where we are relation to the Gospel being alive in us.
This is a great book/study if you want to learn about Lisa Harper's adopted daughter Missy. While Lisa Harper is an entertaining speaker, the actual study of the book of Mark was sorely lacking. Very little of Mark was covered. And what was covered was disjointed and fragmented with select scripture versus from other books.
