Carlos Gracie: The Creator of a Fighting Dynasty

Rate this book
How many Gracies does it take to create the history of jiu-jitsu? It's likely that not even the family is able to answer right away, taking into account the numerous clan and the various champions in each generation. But there's no doubt if the question who was the creator of this success story? With this in mind, Reila felt it was time to write a book and restore the philosophy and teachings of her father, Carlos Gracie, the great precursor of the family's saga.

Highly recommended. Especially if you train or are interested in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

So far I've had trouble finishing this book. It's the 2nd time I've picked it up now and I'm not looking forward to finishing it.

Basically, it's hard to take this book seriously when it claims that Carlos Gracie could speak to animals, predict when his children would be born and predict when certain people were going to die.

Also, I feel like Reila Gracie took great pains to make Carlos look like an alpha male and that Helio was completely subservient to him. That Helio used to ask Carlos for advice on even the most simple thing. Sorry, but I don't buy it. I have too many Brazilian cousins to know that they are pretty self reliant.

I am enjoying the history lesson so far. Hopefully, Reila focuses more on that as the book continues.

As a Gracie Jiu-Jitsu practitioner for almost 20 years and an instructor of the art for 15 years, I could not wait for this biography to be translated into English. At times you can tell that it is translated from Brazilian Portuguese and there are a few grammatical errors but that does not really matter.

This biography delves deeply in the life of Carlos Gracie and the Gracie family. As I know some of the family member, I have to say that this book will be controversial as it shares family secrets as well as some opinions not many Gracie family members would want exposed. Is it a balanced history of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu? You will have to read it and make that judgement yourself.

You will read details of many of the legendary fights in the history of Vale Tudo (today it is called MMA). This biography gives the public some insight into the man and co creator of Gracie (Brazilian) JIu-Jitsu.
