My favorite among the Night World series, I read it when I was fifteen, before this kind of romance became common. I felt it was too short, and so much more could have happened, for example, the Hugh crush.

I love Jez; her name is like no other. She is a strong person and can be very fiery, making me thoroughly enjoy the book. Her selflessness is powerful yet real, and her issues are serious yet mostly comical.

Morgead is my favorite Night World guy. I love how Jez destabilizes him. It's very cute. His love for her touched my heart so much. When he almost lost her...

The Wild Powers story was a good addition to the Night World. The poetic prophecies are cool, and I now know them by heart.

The climax and ending were just perfect.

If you loved vampires before Twilight messed it up, this was a good one."

Štai ir 7-oji serijos knyga. Skaitėsi man ji gan lėtokai, nes iš tikrųjų nelabai patiko veikėjai ir pradžia. Viskas pagerėjo tik knygos gale. Galas jau ėmė artinti šios serijos pabaigą, kuri mane labai sudomino, nes norisi sužinoti kuom viskas baigsis.

Laukia dar trys knygos. Siųsiuosi angliškus e-book, nes lietuviai nesugeba užbaigti serijų vertimų... *sighs* Labai netoleruoju tokių žmonių, kurie pradėję darbą jo neužbaigia. Tad tikiuosi anglų kalboje telefone skaitysis gal greičiau.

APIBENDRINIMAS: lengvas siužetas, pradžia kažkiek nekokia, bet galas verta skaitymo.

The seventh book in L.J. Smith's Night World series, in which a hidden society of vampires, witches and shape-shifters exists alongside the human one, Huntress is the story of Jez Redfern, who goes from being the leader of a dangerous vampire-gang, to a vampire-slayer fiercely bent on protecting humanity. When Jez learns that she is half human, that her mother was one of "them" - a vermin - she is forced to rethink everything she believes, about herself, and about the Night World. Now a member of Circle Daybreak, a renegade Night World organization dedicated to building bonds of trust and respect between the species, Jez finds herself dispatched on a deadly mission with far-reaching consequences.

As the millenium draws near, so too does the apocalypse, and Circle Daybreak and the Night World Council race to find the Wild Powers - four beings whose astonishing abilities can either turn back the darkness, or bring it down upon the world. Can Jez locate the Wild Power believed to be in the San Francisco area? Or will her old gang, led by the handsome and scheming Morgead Blackthorn - Jez's erstwhile second-in-command, sometime friend, and eternal soulmate - kill her first...?

Smith's series takes a new direction in Huntress, adding a high-fantasy element that transforms it from a collection of stories about supernatural teenage love, to an ongoing epic narrative about battling evil and saving the world. Jez is an engaging heroine - strong and determined - and like all of Smith's female leads, infinitely preferable to the more recent Bella Swan, of Twilight fame.

Romantic love definitely takes a back seat in this installment, although it is still quite important. Smith, who has a knack for putting her finger right on the contradictory emotions of adolescence, records Jez's thoughts regarding Morgead: "He's impossible and dangerous and hotheaded and stubborn... he's crazy... he's angry and hostile... he's frustrating and infuriating and he loves to make me miserable..." Sounds like true love, no...?

I'm thanking all the Night World Goddesses for the lack of romance in Huntress.

Honestly, I love the lil teeny-bopper love stories. But this one felt so much more genuine.

So pretty much, Jez is a vampire turned vampire hunter. On her very last hunt with her gang, she has a blinding realization.....she's definitely a little bit human. With two dead parents, she turns to her uncle for answers. Which of course he tells her no one knew a vampire and a human could have a child together, but here she is. To reconcile all the terrible things she's done to humans, she begins hunting vampires who love the thrill of the kill.

Now, I know what you're thinking... "Didn't we just read the vampire hunter storyline?" Well, yeah we did. But this one is better. Jez actually leaves everyone she knows to go live with the other side of her family, the human side. She has to deal with basic teenager things like school work and curfews. Honestly, that might be what made this book better.

Either way, I loved this one. It's definitely in my top 3 so far.

4 Star Read:
The plot is good and the writing is excellent, it is the start of the books concerning Wild Powers. Anyone who likes unexpected surprises, it has a twist in the end and the one in the beginning.

Among some of my favorites. Outstanding literary work. The characters are well developed, interesting. The liked characters are likable and the hated are unlikable. The writing is captivating enough to keep you interested until the end and leave you wanting more. It has a fairly original or uniquely well-developed plot. The pretense and romance were well balanced and done with properly distributed amounts of hints, behaviors, and chemistry. Not so much predictable if at all. Overall, loved it, I recommend reading!!

Oh! This one was even better. I loved the way that the books are connected with each other. Lisa Jane Smith must be a great storyteller because her imagination is making me twist in my seat and wonder what will happen next in the series.

This book is the story of Jez, a half-vampire half-human creature, who when learns about her mixed origins decides to leave from her gang because she knows that they will kill her if they find out what she is. But as the end of the World comes closer, old prophesies start to resurface and now Jez must find a Wild Power to join the Circle Daybreak before the Night World kills her. But no one knows his destiny, so Jezebel will find out more things that can save her (along with all the planet?) or kill her, amongst them her soul mate.

Title: Huntress
Series: Night World #7
Author: LJ Smith
Overall Rating: 4 stars

I really liked this one, at first I wasn't sure because I'm kind of becoming cynical when it comes to love stories, especially in paranormal books as it tends to be a love story between an alpha and an omega figure. However, Jez and Morgead were both strong main characters which I really enjoyed, it definitely added to the story rather than take away from it. I also like how at the end it was cool with her being half human, like...that touched my ice cold heart. I'm so bitter at times, but I think my love for LJ makes these books good!

So I really like Jez, she is a likable character. I think she was in love with Morgead even before leaving, whch is probably right. Hugh an old Soul she loved, but could never have was a nice touch.

So she was sent to invetigate, and steal the Wild Power form her old friends. She found out about her link to Morgead, and feared it, I don't really know which is it I like the msot, but the story wasn't boring, and Claire was not so annoying, as I thought she would be.

The end was the right one, and I was happy to read it.

I have this thing when it comes to Young Adult books, their premises and cover art especially. I think I have more fun imagining who it will appeal to and how. There's always this imagined reader in my head, typically a teenage girl who feels as if she's on the brink of something, about to reach the edge of her power, her passion, her beauty. As if this next book is the one that will unveil the world hidden from her till now, and the reality of who she is. Books have always been about discovery for me, self-discovery especially, and nowhere is self-discovery as deep and rapid as in our teenage years. Everything we read is at once a mirror and a pool, reflecting us as well as pulling us into its depths.

I have no context for the Night World series except that it came up in my weeding and I wanted to know a little more of what it was. Read it and it's a Very 90s supernatural story with soulmates and not-bad-boys and Extremely Beautiful main characters. Sure enough, my Imagined Reader for this one is half-certain she is waiting to come into herself as a tough and beautiful half-vampire that everyone falls in love with.

The Night World
Huntress
L. J. Smith

‘It’s simple,’ Jez said on the night of the last hunt of her life. ‘You run. We chase. If we catch you, you die. We’ll give you three minutes head start.’

Plot.
Jaz Redfern was a loyal vampire, who loves the hunt, but one day on a hunt something trips her memory and she remembers that she’s half vampire, half human.

Realising that she can’t stay around her friend Morgead who hates humans with a passion would take her out.

Moving in with her mother’s human family she hides that she is a vampire, and tries to live a human life while working with Circle Daybreak.
When news of four Wild Powers turning up - they could be human, vampire, werewolf, shifter no one knows.

The Night World wants to kill them so they start the end of the world, thus they can take over the world.
Circle Daybreak wants to save them to brings everyone together.

Jaz has the mission to go back to Morgead and the gang to find the Wild Power and bring them to Circle Daybreak before the Night World gets them.
Turns out Jaz and Morgead have different opinion on the matter.

What I Liked.
This series seems to get better with each book, the story in Huntress was fantastic, I like the new plot line idea.
It was action packed. Enjoyable

I love Jaz and Morgeads relationship, too badass cute couple. Love.

What I Didn’t Like.
Too short, it needed to be longer.

Overall.
Enjoyable. Like I said this series is getting better.

This wasn't one I was too keen on when I was first reading these in high school. Something about it just didn't really grab me, or I just never bothered to re-read it like I did with some of the other ones, but upon re-reading it now, I think it might be one of the strongest ones. It's less self-contained, because it kick starts the whole Wild Powers story arc and introduces some broader plot points beyond just this one story. Connects to a few others in a nice way. And I think the character dynamics and the growth within it is more interesting than some of the others that I did favour before.

I also appreciate that the romance in this one has a history. They didn't just all of a sudden find each other and by merit of the soulmate connection, boom they're in love. No, they have a long history together and were a sort of found family. The transition from sort of a love-hate rivalry to the soulmate romance feels quite smooth and I liked that.

I do not remember the parts before this one, because I've read them long ago. But as an individual book it was pretty enjoyable.
I like the world created by L. J. Smith.
The first "plot twist" was kind of expected, very similar to common TV shows or movies. The second "plot twist" was even more expected when you think of it, but I was caught with the first one.
Anyway, it's a good book for vampire lovers.

Maturity is realizing that the Night World series, with its short and fast-paced plots, subtle violence and gore, and casual world-building, is still honestly one of the best supernatural series written ever.

Oh and that L. J Smith really has a talent for creating flawed but loveable characters.

And that Jez and Morgead are one of the most mature and sensible and funniest couples.

Haven't read this since sometime last year and something made me want to reread again. Jez and Morgead are so cute together. And the story was believable, despite it being fantasy. I absolutely loved it!

So here's the story: Jez is a 16 year old vampire who is in a gang with 5 other vampires. They kill humans for fun and because they think humans are vermin. In the first chapter Jez has a flashback of her childhood, when she was 3 or 4, of her parents getting murdered. Her uncle told her vampire hunters killed her but she realizes that vampires really killed her parents. And that is when she finds out that she is really only half vampire.

She leaves her gang since, she can't kill her own kind anymore, and goes to live with her aunt, uncle and two cousins, Ricky and Claire.

One year later:Jez also became a vampire hunter which causes her to constantly break curfew and her aunt and uncle are fed up. And her cousin Claire is pissed because Jez always get away with it and she promises to find out what her cousin is up to.

Jez also joined a group called Circle Daybreak which is like an organization of Night World people and humans who just want everyone to be friends basically. She befriends a guy around her age named Hugh, who she constantly says she loves but believes that he doesn't feel the same way. Hugh is an old soul which just means that he has be reincarnated many times and he is a rare old soul because he remembers his old lives.

Anyways so Hugh tells her about four people called Wild Powers. The Wild Powers basically are the key to stopping the Apocalypse and the Council wants to kill the Wild Powers. So Jez's job is to rescue one of the Wild Powers and bring them back to Circle Daybreak so Circle Daybreak can protect them. There's only one way to get the Wild Power because there is only one person who knows where the Wild Power is. She has to go back to her gang more specifically her best friend and sort of enemy.

So Jez skips school and goes to Morgead's. She battles him for her spot back as the leader. She wins and Morgead drinks her blood since some blood has to be spilled in order for her to really be the leader. Morgead does and they realize that they're soul mates. Morgead keeps trying to get her to open up to him but she doesn't want to because she thinks that he'll kill her when he finds out that she's human. They have a mental argument and he stops biting her.

So anyways she makes up a lie about Hunter Redfern wanting the Wild Power for himself and he believes it. He shows her a tape of a little girl in a burning building and the fire just dies out of nowhere. Her gang comes in and they're happy to see her. Her and her gang go to the apartments to where the little girl is. They kidnap her and try to test her to see if she really is the Wild Power. They light something on fire to get her to use her power. She is so terrified that she jumps off the three story balcony.

Jez rescues her and Morgead comes to help her. Morgead erases the little girl's memory and him and Jez have a little moment. Jez finally decides to give into him being her soul mate. The other gang members walk downstairs and Jez and Morgead take the little girl home.

When Jez gets home, her aunt and uncle are so mad that they take away her bike. Jez meets with Hugh the next day at the train station. She realizes that Claire followed her. They are attacked by two werewolves and a vampire. Jez and Claire almost get run over by a train but they are saved by the blue magic of a Wild Power. (She thinks that Claire is the Wild Power). They end up getting kidnapped and she wakes up to find herself in the back of a van with Hugh, Claire and Morgead. She ends up telling Morgead that she is half human and is with Circle Daybreak. They get out of the van and find out that Lily Redfern, Hunter Redfern's last living daughter, kidnapped them with the help of one of her gang members.

So Lily is trying to figure out who is the Wild Power. They almost stake Jez and that's when Jez realizes that she is the Wild Power. She uses her power to vaporize (literally) all the bad guys. And at the end her and Morgead end up joining Circle Daybreak.

5 stars.

Still a favorite. Huntress was one of my top 3 favorite novels in the Night World series, if not my number 1 favorite and at this point it still is. I enjoyed the story from beginning to end and there was only a few minor issues that don't effect my rating at all.

The story starts with Jezebel (Jez) Redfern a vampire and her gang toying with some human gang members. It was a fun scene, even though I knew that the humans would probably be dead soon. It's during this part that Jez realizes something about herself, she's not a full vampire, she's half human and half vampire. In other words she's an abomination to the Night World.

It's now a year later, Jez lives with her deceased mother's family, her Aunt, Uncle, and two cousins. Claire, her eldest cousin, and Jez don't get along. Mostly it's because Jez gets away with a lot of things at the house.

Jez's friend Hugh has recently told Jez about a Wild Power, Wild Powers are basically humanities saving grace. There are four of them and they all need to be together to stop an apocaplyse, if even one dies, is turned to the other side, or isn't found then the Day world where humans rule is over and the Night World takes over.

Morgead, Jez's second in command of her former vampire gang, and soulmate, is also on the trail of the Wild Power. And in order to find out what he knows she has to go undercover and get back into the gang.

At first it's thought to be a a young child named Ione, then,

I really enjoyed the way the story unfolded. It moved a good pace, there wasn't any lagging sections, and I had fun rereading this journey. The tone changes in this book, where as the previous books focused more on the romance and the soulmate principle while this one starts the push toward that final book and final battle. I didn't remember that it was this late in the series when the apocalypse talk really started, so it was a bit of surprise when I read the previous books and it wasn't brought up at all to my knowledge or if it was it was so minor that I didn't pick it up.

The relationship between Morgead and Jez was fun and entertaining. Morgead was Jez's second in command of the vampire gang when she was the leader. Now that she's gone he's the leader. There relationship was a bickering one. Jez thought that Morgead hated her but as I read their banter it wasn't hate I felt. It was more playful and sarcastic but not hate.

There was kind of triangle also in this between Morgead, Jez, and Hugh. In that Jez thought Hugh was attractive and occasionally wondered about being with him but she also has strong feelings for Morgead. I liked that LJS didn't develop that completely, it's just there for a little bit, it's not for sure, and it's kind of is it a triangle or isn't it vibe.

One thing that I thought was a bit too convenient for my taste was how Jez realized she wasn't a full vampire. It's during the hunt of the human gang members and the leader, who Jez is chasing, is pleading for his life. And it was in that moment that Jez remembers something from her parents deaths/murders. What bothered me about her finding out that way was that this couldn't have been the first person/victim to plead for their lives with her. She's a vampire, she's more than likely killed and/or feed hundreds of times before why would this one be the one to jog her memory?

Honestly other than that issue this was great.

Have I ever mentioned how much I simply ADORE this book? No? Oh, well, allow me to do so now.
I actually own the volume with 7, 8, and 9 all in one (as well as the first two volumes with 1-6) and have read them avidly. But I thought it would be easier to review a single story from the volume like this because then you know which one I'm talking about ;)
I'm definitely a huuuuuge fan of Ms. Smith. No one writes romance, action, and forbidden perfect love quite like her! I reread Huntress the other day because I just love it and it was just as spectacular as I remembered! Jez is one of the most amazing heroines ever! And Morgead? Oh my gosh, can we say perfect? I absolutely love the Soulmate Principle! What girl wouldn't? It's just that great! And even greater for Jez and Morgead! One of the things I like about them is all their back history. They've been friends forever. I liked that about Becoming by Raine Thomas as well. It made them falling in love just that much more right. You couldn't help but root for them! They were both flawed but that's okay, it makes them better. I don't think there are even words to describe my love for this book or all of the Night World books. They're just that fantastic! LEt me just say that if you are one of the poor unfortunate people who has yet to read them you should remedy that right away! :)

First thing that strikes out at me is the cover of the book. Now I have the volumes that come 3 books in 1 but these covers are stunning on the originals. I'm just wondering why Gene Simmon's KISS Demon persona is on here?

Not sure but also getting some very strong Buffy vibes too.

Another thing is that the books are starting to take a turn. There is still that paranormal romance thing going on but the stories are starting to shift more to apocalyptic prophecy territory.

There were hints of that developing in Soulmate but they do get kicked up to an 11 starting with Huntress. It's fine that it is getting darker and not focusing so much on the relationships but still making that connection to these dynamics.

Jez doesn't go by her given name Jezebel but being known as The Huntress, Jez just seems to fit better. She doesn't need to make too much of a name for herself being a Redfern in Night World society but she loves that she was able usurp Morgead Blackthorn as the leader of their gang.

They are both cocky and stubborn and they have been this way since childhood but one fateful night...changes everything for Jez.

Hunting a group of skinheads, Jez corners one and is about to go in for the kill but his display of blubbering brings back memories. Jez's parents were vampires like herself but they were killed by vampire hunters when she was only four years old but it brings to mind of a woman proudly asking that they spare her daughter and a man pleading for her not to be hurt.

The sounds of fighting and screaming and the child crying and other vampires hissing around the child...to kill her.

Jez realizes now that this hesitation is because she isn't a vampire at all...but half vampire and half human. Jez knows what the members of her gang will think of her but it matters more to her that Morgead will look at her differently.

Jez runs home to the man who raised her, her Uncle Bracken, her father's brother. It is confirmed that she looked human until she was four and then she began to drink blood and gain more vampire powers. Jez knows she can't stay and Uncle Bracken tells her that she has human family on her late mother's side.

Almost a year later, Jez has been living with the Goddard family of her Uncle Jim, Aunt Nan, younger cousin Ricky and her seventeen year old cousin Claire. Jez has discovered that she doesn't need blood to survive and can live on human food but it has taken away most of her vampire powers.

It still hasn't taken away Jez's thrill to hunt but now...she hunts vampires instead of living as one and it requires keeping that secret from her fully human family. Jez knows about The Night World and they don't but she does have one human she can trust.

His name is Hugh Davis. His family were killed by werewolves when he was a kid but he was able to protect himself by using the knowledge of killing them from a past life. Hugh is a human who is an Old Soul, reincarnated and retaining memories of the past lives.

Hugh comes to Jez one night and discusses how things are happening that seem to indicate that all of the Old Powers are coming back. Night People are getting stronger with their powers and some Night People are finding their soulmates with humans so these ancient powers of both good and evil are getting stronger.

A prophecy has been uncovered talking about four people with the Wild Power to stand against the darkness. The vampires don't want the human world to be saved and want to kill the Wild Powers.

Circle Daybreak, humans and members of the Night World set on stopping the fighting, have intercepted messages and learned that a vampire claims he knows who one of the Wild Powers and will turn them over to the Night World council if they meet his terms.

Morgead Blackthorn.

Hugh thinks Jez may be the only one who can get close enough to Morgead, find out who the Wild Power is and bring that person to Circle Daybreak for protection.

Jez agrees and returns to San Francisco to find Morgead. When she does, he is not happy that she came back and they fight to see who will lead the gang again. In the year she was gone, Jez finds out that Morgead has indeed grown stronger and that he can knock her down with a telekinetic power to rival that of Carrie White!

With Morgead weakened by using his power, he yields to Jez and the only thing Jez didn't remember was that she has to drink his blood. Jez makes excuses to have Morgead drink her blood instead and when he does...the soulmate principle kicks in.

Jez is able to see inside the real Morgead and find that he was abandoned by his mother as a child and Jez was the only light shining in his life since he was five years old. Overwhelmed but afraid that he can see that Jez is half-vampire, she pushes at his button of abandonment and the connection is broken.

Back to business, Morgead shows Jez a video of a newscast that was covering a fire where there was a young child in the building and it appeared as if she didn't survive...but she did. The child was unharmed and slowing down the tape, Jez can see the flash of light like a blue fire.

Morgead believes the child is one of the four Wild Powers and Jez is shocked to learn she is a human and not a witch.

When the rest of their old gang arrives, Jez learns that they have discovered the name of the girl and where she lives and that they plan to abduct her. If the child can pass the test Morgead has come up with to see if she truly is a Wild Power, they'll turn her over.

Jez has been living in the human world and this is a child about to be put in danger...how is she going to keep her emotions in control? Show sympathy for human vermin...her dark secret will be revealed.

Unfortunately for Jez it won't be the first time that her human heart and her otherworldly connection to Morgead will come into conflict because all of this is just the beginning...

The books just keep getting better as the series goes on and Huntress all that a vampire slayer-vampire shipper like me could ask for.

oh man, i love this one. the rest of the series is pretty good, but the end of the world stuff is just an awesome story, and i love how ljs tells it. (well, except for the ending. since it doesn't exist. still. 13 years later.) but seriously, i still have notebooks from high school with the prophecies and speculation scribbled all over them. there was probably a whole section of the lj smith SAT (yes, my best friend and i created a standardized test) devoted to it.

PLUS jez and morgead are my faaaaavorites. a lot of the other soulmate stories were kind of needlessly complicated, and this one hinged on one sort of silly point (morgead couldn't tell that jez had human blood, not vampire?), but otherwise was great.

plus i bet you anything that jez, morgead, quinn, and rashel team up to torment ash ALL THE TIME.
