The first thing that I noticed about these books is their incredibly clunky and awkward prose. The second thing that I noticed is that rather than being a bedtime book, like I expected from the title, they start out in the morning and go through the whole day... often feeling random and haphazard. The illustrations are mediocre.
In short, while I think that this series of books make for popular baby shower and first birthday gifts from family and friends hailing from the featured locales, they're poorly written and not worth the money.
The few that I have are in my donation pile already.
These books are so fun. I got this for my nephew and he loved it. I like to buy it for kids that don't live in NYC because whenever they visit I can show them some of the things in the book. They use all the great New York City landmarks plus firemen and NYC policemen. I've seen the Philadelphia edition as well and thought it was good too.
This whole series of books is really cute. Grandmommy bought this one as a souvenir for us to add to our collection (which currently includes Good Night Washington, D.C. and Good Night Texas). It features many of the prominent New York landmarks and simple prose text. I'm hoping to add a few more of these books to our collection and instill an early interest in travel in our child.
I was with my brother when he got this for my niece in NYC. We are hoping to inspire them to be curious about the world and want to travel to new places.
The little story is a day doing things in New York. The empire state building, central park, museums and more fun stuff are stuffed into this little book. Great little remembrance.
We love this! We also live in New York City, which could certainly explain a lot of the appeal. When we read it, I like to point out which places Lucy has already visited (I was surprised by how many, she's not a year old yet), and which will be future destinations.
I personally think Good Night Maryland was better (maybe because we live in Maryland so it more relates to my daughter.) However, I do like how it talks about things like the Art Museum and The Statue of Liberty.
"Discover some of the best sights in the five boroughs of the Big Apple. Then use your Metrocard to go visit a few. Find more places to visit by reading other books in the series, Buenas noches a nuestro mundo."
For this being a short board book for young toddlers I thought it was very well done. It talks about saying goodnight to all of the sites in New York City and is a super fun and easy read that keeps kids engaged with great illustrations.
Hope likes it because it is where we live and it has the Statue of Liberty in it and she wants to go into the Statue of Liberty and there is the firefighter, police, and Bronx zoo and construction worker and the bridge. 🚨🚨🚨🚖🚖🚠🚖🚜🚞🏏🎣 per hope. Good book that doesn't get her tooo excited
A book about New York City for young children. It contains scenes from a day of sight seeing and ends with the children going to sleep at the end of the story.
I read this book to a 2 year old and we both enjoyed it! The book has sturdy pages that will not tear. It has colorful pictures and a nice simple story.
I expected this book to have a sleepy tone, but it's more about landmarks in New York than anything. I think that, if my expectations were different, I might enjoy the book a little bit more. However, learning about the landmarks and locations can be fun for kids too, even if they're not heading to sleep.
The artwork is pretty atrocious and the use of comic sans is troubling to say the least, but at the same time this is a really nice overview of the city. Well thought out with some great details.
Pro: city landmarks and sights, opportunity to find some matching pictures (spot the differences) Cons: really awkward prose (contrast with Goodnight Moon, which the title evokes).
This was another one of my birthday books (there were a lot). Mommy read it to me today. I liked looking at the pictures but I wanted her to move faster through the pages, and I got a little bored before the end. Maybe I'll like it better when I'm not having a sugar high.
