When Grandma comes to stay, Iris has to hide her lion. But Grandma is acting suspiciously, too, and Iris is sure she has a secret of her own. To Iris's great surprise, it turns out that Grandma is hiding a bear in her bedroom! This funny follow-up to the picture book, HOW TO HIDE A LION, is certain to be a winner.

Helen Stephens is a wonderful author, and this second book in the How To Hide A Lion series is just as lovely and surprising as the first. Grandma is coming to stay, and Iris doesn't want to worry her, so she has to work extra hard to hide her lion from Grandma. But Iris isn't the only one who has something to hide. A charming, warm and witty picture book about looking after friends, and keeping secrets.
I believe that lots of children in KS1 and under would enjoy this book as it leaves them wondering and questioning what is going to happen next. The warm and light-hearted illustrations add to the humour of the story. I also particularly liked how the grandma and Iris both had the same idea but no idea about one another's. It is great to use as a discussion with children about what they may hide or keep as a surprise when someone else comes to look after them!
This one was not as strong as the first two How to Hide a Lion books we read, the original and the christmas one. Which is unfortunate because they didn’t have it at the library so I bought it! It’s somehow a bit more silly as Grandma shows up with an enormous mysterious box and an inability to notice the lion. Still worth a read but not really a keeper. My 4 year old enjoyed it ok, but preferred How to Hide a Lion at School which we got at the same time.
Iris’s Grandma is coming to visit so Iris will have to hide Lion from her! Fortunately Grandma’s vision isn’t great and in her far-sightedness she misses the lion hiding in plain sight, whether he is sticking out from behind the curtain, hiding behind newspapers, under lampshades, or posing as a coat rack. Then Grandma begins to act strange herself. The great big dress up box she traveled with starts to growl, and Grandma begins dumping food into it! What growling creature could Grandma be keeping in her box when grandmas were supposed to scare easily? Will Iris discover another furry friend of Grandma’s?! What will Iris’ Mom and Dad think?!
This book is hilarious, with Grandma mistaking Lion’s tail for a fluffy towel and his squishy body as a comfy couch. Laugh out loud funny thanks to the fun and warm hearted illustratins drawn with watercolor and ink by author Helen Stephens. I love the relationship between iris and grandma and all their similarities. I laughed out loud at “mom and dad are back, let’s surprise them!” Read more at www.diapers-and-daydreams.com !
