It's official: I am going to read every single James Rollins book in existence!

I think I'm enjoying James Rollins standalone novels more than his hit series, Sigma Force.

I really dig this one and I'm not a fan of hot sweaty settings like the Amazon (prefer cold) but Wowza this one is a winner!

Remarkably an ex-special force/CIA guy makes his way to a remote village four years after he and the 30 research team went missing, but barely. He is skin on bones with flies on his oozing sores and maggots chowing his wounds. He doesn't have a tongue but somehow grew his amputated arm back. He's marked with a blue and red symbol of a ghost tribe on his body that a native tribe says signifies an evil spirit. Unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries and illness. His remains are returned to the US of A. Dun dun DUN!

Missing expedition... People keep going there and do not return. So what do you do? You send more people. This is such an exciting and scary adventure. It appears everything in the jungle is out to eat or kill you in the most horrifying way possible. Not for the faint of heart, and if you dislike the good guys dying in a novel, this is probably not for you.

I love Amazonia for blending action, mystery, botany, medicine, Amazonian tribe tradition, and rituals into this excellent read. Minus half a star for some parts that are a little out there. Love the ending!! Highly recommend it to James Rollins' fans and sci-fi thriller readers.

জঙ্গলে যত সংখ্যক মিলিটারিই থাকুক, যত গোলাবারুদ‌ই থাকুক, কোনো কিছুই তোমাকে পুরোপুরি রক্ষা করতে পারবে না। জঙ্গল যদি তোমাকে চায়, তোমাকে সে নেবেই। একেই বলে আমাজন ফ্যাক্টর। বিপুল সবুজের এই অরণ্যে যারাই আসে সবাইকেই এই অরণ্যের অনুকম্পা ও পাগলামি দুটোই দেখতে হয়।

উপন্যাসের শুরুটাই বেশ চমকপ্রদ; আর এই বৈশিষ্ট্য পুরোটা জুড়েই ছিল। চরিত্রদের সম্পর্কে মাপা বর্ণনা কেবল এবং একঝাঁক চরিত্রের মধ্যে সমন্বয়-সাধন লক্ষণীয়। জঙ্গল-জাগুয়ার-অচেনা বৃক্ষ-বিলুপ্ত গোত্র-অজানা ভাইরাস সবকিছুর দুর্দান্ত মিশেল– অ্যাকশন দৃশ্যে শ্বাস আপনাতেই বন্ধ হয়ে যাওয়ার জোগাড়!
পৃথিবীর ফুসফুস-খ্যাত আমাজনের বিশাল ব্যাপ্তি, এর মধ্যকার প্রাণীবৈচিত্র্য এমনিতেই ভীতি-জাগানিয়া, সেখানে কীভাবে একদল মানুষ হারিয়ে যাওয়া রহস্যের সমাধান করে কিংবা আদৌ করতে পারে কিনা– সেই ভ্রমণটাও ভয়াবহ সুন্দর!

আর হ্যাঁ, অনুবাদের মান‌ও খুবই ভালো ছিল। মনেই হচ্ছিল না অনুবাদ পড়ছি.. প্রায় মৌলিক লেখার কাছাকাছিই।

What a huge disappointment. My rating now might change depending on my further assessment of the novel. I'm still contemplating whether I should give it 1 or 2 stars. Most of my 1 star are for my dnf books, so I might go ahead and give this a 2. Lucky bastard, but like I said, it might drop down to 1star one day.

The main problem would be the characters. Almost all of them were flat and dull. Dull to the point that you wouldn't mind them dying. To be honest Kelly and her daughter were the only ones well developed. That says a lot about this novel, she's not even the main character. Nate was terribly boring, despite his knowledge of the Amazon and all. No sympathy felt while reading this.

Another huge problem would be the plot, or the substance of it. This novel had huge potential, but wow, it failed big time.

The Amazon. That alone drawn me in to read this novel, and obviously I was expecting a lot. I was expecting to read more of the animals, insects, and other weird made up creatures, but instead I was shoved with plants, and a few mildly interesting creatures.

Don't get me wrong, the plants mentioned in the novel were fairly interesting, but it wasn't adequate to make the novel as amazing as it should've been. Like I said, we're talking about the Amazon here, anything can happen. It being a huge mystery, James Rollins could've given us more than what he did. I can't further express how disappointed I am, because the list would go on and on if I am to talk about the inadequacy of the Amazon experience I was looking forward to.

Next issue would be the "secret" of the Amazon. It was okay, but nothing to be amazed about.

Sure the fact that his father was still alive was a little bit shocking, but I wasn't that impressed. Even the cure itself was utterly boring for me. Need I repeat myself, James Rollins could've given us more.


Before anyone comment on maybe I'm not fond of this genre, I will stop you right there and say that I'm a huge Sci-Fi fan, especially of this genre to be precise. Amazon, jungles, underwater, desert, etc. Those things interest me, especially the animals and weird horror filled things that could be unraveled. Mystery filled Sci-Fi adventure is an amazing genre for me, I've read some books, and also seen some movies regarding these, and I liked them.

So to sum it all up, I really didn't like this novel. It had a huge potential to be one of my favorites, but it ended up being one of the novels I wouldn't recommend to anyone. I didn't like it, but I guess it was also okay in a way. Mildly interesting botany facts, and a few mildly interesting creatures. If I were you though, I'd read something else of James Rollins. I've read some of his other novels, and really liked them. I did have huge expectations before reading this, so maybe that contributed to this awful disappointment I'm feeling right now.

Amazonia was the first book I read by James Rollins about twenty years ago. I was traveling through the airport and needed something to read on a long flight. Knowing I enjoyed thrillers with an archaeological or biological component to them, it looked intriguing. I enjoyed it a lot and made it my thing - every time I'd go to an airport, I'd pick a book from their local bookstore from this theme. After a few years, I began buying in advance because I was often not finding something new at the airport. It began my interest in the Sigma Force series, which I'm now 75% complete on. This was a good book, helped give me a different perspective on what was really going on in the rain forest, and it kept me content on the flight. Good story!

মাত্র ২ টা বই পড়েই জেমস রলিন্সের ফ্যান হয়ে গেলাম। অসাধারণ একটা বই। আমাজনের অভিযান বেশ ভাল ছিল, মনে হচ্ছিল গল্পের চরিত্রগুলোর সাথে নিজেই অভিযানে আছি। অনেকদিন পর আমাজনে অ্যাডভেঞ্চার দিলাম এবং বলতেই হয় অভিযান অনেক উপভোগ্য ছিল❤

Holy holes in the fence Batman! I found another big time fun read on the rapidly growing favorite reads shelf that fell through the cracks!

Time for another short reivew. (Does two make a trend?...oh, I hope not..)

This was my first introduction to James Rollins and thank God for that! She must have been listening!

All James Rollins stories, save two, that I can think of get the same opening statement..."Fast Paced." This is no exception, however, in this one, I think the balance between speed of plot and details is handled better than in other Rollins Novels. There is a character that I'm sure becomes Joe Kowalski in later books that I just love, but he goes by a different name here (similar background). All action adventure stories need a Joe Kowolski type...he's great!

I don't like the "Treasure" they find at the end of the story as much as in other James Rollins books, but I loved the adventure to it and back and I like the Hero and Heroine, also better than in other books (save Subterranean might have had a heroine whom I liked better). There is a lot of action, a lot of scientific mystery and mysterious amazing sub plots and twists and turns

And, of course, monsters wiht HUGE SNAPPING TEETH! (cough)... I mean.. yes, quite frightening creatures that lurk in the depths of hte Amazaon basis. (cough) The villains were cool, not as interesting as Ice Hunt, but close enough. And at the end we see the begining of the Sigma Force Novels starting to get organized... a foreshadowing of serial fun to come (Starting with Sandstorm).

But I digress. Summary-Good book, well paced for action adventure, some violence but generally what I'd call "Made for TV Movie" level violence, very managable. If not a great plot, great execution of plot (about the writing)

...and of course...

HUGE...Big...Monster with.. these huge big Gnashing TEETH... claws that could rip... (sigh) Look at the Bones MAN!....

and a guy who could be Joe Kowolski's twin brother... everything a good adventure needs!

আমাজন, ব্রাজিলের রেইনফরেস্ট যা কিনা পৃথিবীর সবচেয়ে বিপজ্জনক আর রহস্যময় জাগয়াগুলোর একটি। এই আধুনিক বিজ্ঞানের যুগেও এই জঙ্গলের অনেক কিছুই মানুষ উন্মোচন করতে পারে নি। রসায়ন আর জীববিজ্ঞানের জানা-অজানা অনেক কিছুর ভান্ডারও বটে এই জঙ্গল। তবে একই সাথে বিপজ্জনক পরিবেশ, ভয়ংকর সব প্রাণী, নিজস্ব বিশ্বাস ও জীবন ধারায় বসবাস করা আদিবাসী গোত্র, যারা কিনা যেকোনো মূহুর্তে হয়ে যেতে পারে প্রাণের শত্রু—এই সব কিছুর জন্য এই জঙ্গল অনেক প্রতিকূলও। এইজন্য অ্যাডভেঞ্চার ঘরানার গল্পের পটভূমি হিসেবে আমাজন জঙ্গল একেবারে পার্ফেক্ট। যার কারণে এই জঙ্গলের উপর ভিত্তি করে নির্মিত হয়েছে অসংখ্য জনপ্রিয় অ্যাডভেঞ্চার জনরার বই-মুভি। আলোচ্য বইটিও তেমনই একটি।

ব্রাজিলের আমাজন জঙ্গলের ধারের এক রেড ইন্ডিয়ান গ্রামে থাকা আমেরিকান মিশনারিতে হঠাৎ এক আগন্তুক এসে হাজির হলো জঙ্গল থেকে। জঙ্গলে হারিয়ে মৃত্যু শয্যায় চলে যাওয়া লোকটির দেহে আঁকা আছে স্থানীয় মিথ, অভিশপ্ত গোত্র ব্লাড জাগুয়ারের ব্যান অ্যালির চিহ্ন। স্থানীয় শামান সেই লোকটিকে ক্ষতিকর বলে তার লাশকে পুড়িয়ে দিতে বলে। তবে সেই মিশনারির ফাদার তাতে কিছুটা নারাজ। পরে সেই লোকটার কাছে থাকা একটা জিনিস থেকে তার পরিচয় পাওয়া যায়—সে আমেরিকার একজন প্রাক্তন সেনা সদস্য, নাম জেরাল্ড ক্লার্ক। মারা যায় সেই লোকটি।

পরবর্তীতে জানা যায়, ক্লার্ক ছিল একজন সি.আই.এ. এজেন্ট, যে কিনা চার বছর আগে একটা প্রাইভেট পরিবেশ বিজ্ঞান সংস্থার রিসার্চ টিমের সাথে আমাজন জঙ্গলে গিয়েছিল। যদিও সে গিয়েছিল চোরাচালানকারীদের খবর জোগাড় করতে। কিন্তু গোটা টিমটাই জঙ্গলে উধাও হয়ে যায়। পরবর্তীতে তাদের খোঁজার জন্য একাধিক রেসকিউ মিশন চালানো হলেও, ব্যর্থ হয় সেগুলো। তারপর বন্ধ হয়ে যায় সেটা। আরও অবাক করা ব্যাপার হলো, ইরাক যুদ্ধে বাম হাত হারানো ক্লার্ক ফিরে এসেছে একদম স্বাভাবিক আর সুস্থ দুই হাত নিয়ে। তাহলে চার বছর ধরে ক্লার্ক কোথায় ছিল, আর এতোদিন পরে ফেরত এলো কী করে? আর তার এই নতুন হাতের রহস্যটাই বা কী?

নাথান র‍্যান্ড, একজন আমেরিকান যুবক, এক পরিবেশ বিজ্ঞানী দম্পতির একমাত্র সন্তান যারা গবেষণা করতেন আমাজন জঙ্গল নিয়ে। অনেক আগে তার মা মারা যায় সেই জঙ্গলে। চার বছর আগে তার বাবা কার্ল র‍্যান্ডের রিসার্চ টিমই হারিয়ে গিয়েছিল আমাজনে, যেখানে কার্লও ছিল। নাথান অনেক চেষ্টা করে তার বাবাকে খুঁজে বের করার, কিন্তু কোনো লাভ হয় না। উল্টো রেসকিউ মিশনের খরচ বহন করতে গিয়ে সে তার সমস্ত পৈতৃক এক্সক্লুসিভ ইকোলজি টেকের পেটেন্ট হারিয়ে ফেলে টেলাক্স নামের এক ফার্মাসিউটিক্যাল কোম্পানির কাছে। পরবর্তীতে হতাশায় ডুবে যাওয়া বোটানিস্ট নাথান আমাজনেই বসবাস শুরু করে।

অন্যদিকে, জেরাল্ড ক্লার্কের এই অনাকাঙ্ক্ষিত প্রত্যাবর্তনে সি.আই.এ. এর এনভায়রনমেন্ট ডিপার্টমেন্ট, টেলাক্স ফার্মাসিউটিক্যাল কোম্পানি আর 'মিডিয়া' নামের এক রেইনফরেস্ট সংরক্ষণ সংস্থার যৌথ উদ্যোগে নতুন করে এক মিশন শুরু হয়, যার নাম প্রজেক্ট 'আমাজনিয়া'। যে মিশনের উদ্দেশ্য জেরাল্ড ক্লার্কের ট্রেইল ধরে এই রহস্যের সমাধান করা। কয়েকজন বিজ্ঞানী, ডাক্তার, প্রতিনিধি দলের লোক আর একদল রেঞ্জার কমান্ডো সংযুক্ত এই মিশনে নাথানকেও আসার আহ্বান করা হয়। নাথান ও তার কাছের দু'জন রেড ইন্ডিয়ান মানুষও যোগ দেয় 'আমাজনিয়া' মিশনে।

কিন্তু মিশনে নামতেই তাদের উপর যেন বিপদ বর্ষণ হতে থাকে। একদিকে শ্বাপদ সংকুল আমাজন জঙ্গলের ভয়ংকর সব প্রাণী। অন্যদিকে এক অজানা ফার্মাসিউটিক্যাল কোম্পানির কন্ট্রাক্টে তাদের পেছনে লাগা ভয়ংকর দস্যুদল, যাদের নেতা নাথানের বাবার চিরশত্রু লুই ফ্যাব্রি—যে কিনা শুধুমাত্র অর্থ উপার্জন ছাড়াও এই কাজের মাধ্যমে নাথানকে মেরে তার প্রতিশোধ নিতে চাই। তাছাড়া ব্রাজিল থেকে আমেরিকা জুড়ে ছড়িয়ে পরা এক ভয়াবহ অজানা রোগের সমাধানও জড়িত এই মিশনের সাথে। অন্যদিকে তাদের উপর অত্যন্ত ভয়ংকরভাবে আক্রমণ করতে থাকে অদ্ভুত কিছু প্রাণী, যাদের অস্তিত্ব সম্পর্কে এখনো ধারণা নেই মানুষের।

এইসবের পেছনের কারণ কী—আমাজনে লুকানো বিজ্ঞানের অজানা কোনো ভান্ডার, নাকি অভিশপ্ত গোত্র ব্লাড জাগুয়ারের ব্যান অ্যালির অভিশাপ? নাথান কি পারবে, চার বছর আগে কি হয়েছিল, তার বাবার কি হয়েছে, তা খুঁজে বের করতে? প্রজেক্ট 'আমাজনিয়া' কি সফল হবে, যার দরুন পৃথিবী বাঁচতে পারবে এক অজানা ভয়ংকর রোগের হাত থেকে?

'আমাজনিয়া', জনপ্রিয় রোমাঞ্চ ঔপন্যাসিক জেমস রোলিন্সের লেখা একটি সায়েন্স ফিকশন অ্যাডভেঞ্চার থ্রিলার বই। অনুবাদক রাকিব হাসানের অনুবাদে এই বইটি বর্তমান সময়ের বাংলাভাষী থ্রিলার পাঠকদের মাঝে প্রচুর জনপ্রিয়। আমাজনের গহীনের এই অভিযান কাহিনীর ভক্তের সংখ্যাও অগণিত। এই বইয়ের গল্প একটা অ্যাডভেঞ্চার কাম সাই-ফাই থ্রিলার হিসেবে খুব ভালো। অনেকটা স্টিভেন স্পিলবার্গের ক্লাসিক সাই-ফাই অ্যাডভেঞ্চার সিনেমাগুলোর মতো। আর গল্পে কাল্পনিক হলেও যেভাবে বিজ্ঞান আর মিথকে এক সুতোয় গেঁথে উপস্থাপন করা হয়েছে, তা সত্যিই অসাধারণ লেগেছে। গল্পের গুরুত্বপূর্ণ উপাদানগুলো যেমন–আমাজনের প্রতিকূল পরিবেশ, জীববিদ্যা ইত্যাদি বিষয়ে লেখক যে অনেক রিসার্চ করেছেন তা বইটি পড়ে বোঝা যায়। তবে কোনো ইনফো ডাম্পিং করা হয় নি, সব তথ্য গল্পের প্রয়োজনে ভালোভাবেই এসেছে।

বইয়ের এক্সিকিউশন আর চরিত্রায়ন পুরোটাই সিনেমাটিকভাবে করা হয়েছে। তবে তাতে আমার সমস্যা হয় নি তেমন, কারণ পুরো গল্পটাই ছিল মুভি ম্যাটেরিয়াল। গল্প গঠনে প্রথম ৭০-৮০ পাতা ধীরে এগোলেও এরপর থেকে গল্প গতিশীল হতে থাকে। একের পর এক ভয়ংকর সারভাইভাল অ্যাকশন দৃশ্য, শক্তিশালী এক অজানা ছোঁয়াচে রোগ ছড়িয়ে পরার ভয়ংকর পরিস্থিতি, আর এক অলৌকিক রহস্য পাঠককে বুদ করে রাখবে। আর শেষ ৮০ পৃষ্ঠা জুড়ে থাকা ক্লাইম্যাক্সটাও ছিল অসম্ভব থ্রিলিং। সাইফাই ফ্যান্টাসি অংশের মূল অজানা জগতটার নির্মাণও খুব ভালো হয়েছে। যদিও এটার সাথে অ্যাভাটার (২০০৯) মুভিটার মেইন কনসেপ্টের একটু মিল আছে, কিন্তু 'আমাজনিয়া' বই মুভিটার আগে প্রকাশিত।

এই বইয়ের চরিত্রায়নও সিনেমার মতো করে করা হয়েছে, যার ফলে চরিত্রগুলো সব মারাত্মক স্টিরিওটিপিক্যাল। মূলত গল্পে কার কেমন কার্যকারিতা আর কতটুকু ভূমিকা আছে, সেই হিসেবে চরিত্রগুলো গঠিত হয়েছে। তবে এভাবেই বইয়ের সব গুরুত্বপূর্ণ চরিত্রকে সুন্দরভাবে গড়ে তুলতে পেরেছেন লেখক। নায়ক নাথান র‍্যান্ড আর নায়িকা কেলি ওব্রেইন স্টিরিওটাইপের চরিত্র হলেও, তাদের ইমোশনাল দিকটি ভালোভাবেই গঠিত হয়েছে। সাইড ক্যারেক্টারগুলোর মধ্যে প্রফেসর কাউয়ি, ম্যানুয়েল (আর তার পোষা জাগুয়ার টর টর) কেও ভালো লেগেছে।

ভিলেইন লুই ফ্যাব্রি আর তার নৃশংস ইন্ডিয়ান স্ত্রী সুইকে গতানুগতিকভাবেই উপস্থাপন করা হয়েছে। তবে রেঞ্জারদলের সদস্য এতো বেশি আর তাদের মধ্যকার স্বতন্ত্র পার্থক্য এতো কম ছিল যে, তাদের কাউকে আলাদা করে মনে রাখা যায় না। অন্যদিকে, অনুবাদ সম্পর্কে বলতে গেলে বলবো—বইয়ের সবকিছু বেশ গুছিয়ে অনুবাদটা করা হয়েছে। কাহিনী বুঝতে খুব একটা সমস্যা হয় নি। বইয়ের ভারী ভারী বৈজ্ঞানিক টার্মস বোঝা, এতো বিশাল বর্ণনার বড় বড় অ্যাকশন দৃশ্যগুলো ভিজুয়ালাইজ করা সম্ভব হচ্ছিল। অনুবাদ মোটামুটি সাবলীলই ছিল। তবে কিছু ক্ষেত্রে এর বর্ণনা আমার কাছে একটু শিথিল মনে হয়েছে।

এবার একটু খারাপ লাগার প্রসঙ্গে আসি। জেমস রোলিন্স বাংলাদেশের থ্রিলার পাঠকদের মাঝে খুব জনপ্রিয়, আর তার বইগুলো নিয়ে মূল প্রশংসা হলো–তার বইগুলো পাঠককে বোর হতে দেয় না। আর এই বই নিয়ে তো সেই প্রশংসা আরও বেশি। তবে বলতেই হচ্ছে, কিছু ক্ষেত্রে একই টাইপের ঘটনার রিপিটেশন, অতিরিক্ত বর্ণনা, অনেক জায়গায় অনুবাদের শিথিলতার জন্য বইটা পড়তে পড়তে অনেকবার হাপিয়ে উঠেছিলাম। বারবার শুধু বইটাকে শেষ করা ঝামেলার মনে হচ্ছিল। আর আমার মতে, একটা থ্রিলার বইয়ের ক্ষেত্রে এটা মনে হওয়া বড় নেগেটিভ পয়েন্ট। যেহেতু বইটি বর্তমানে খুবই জনপ্রিয়, তাই হতাশার পরিমাণও এক্ষেত্রে একটু বেশিই।

বইটি পড়ার সময় ভাবছিলাম, ৩.৫ তারা (মানে ৩ তারা) দেবো না ৪? তবে জমপেশ ক্���াইম্যাক্সটা পড়ে শেষমেশ চারই দিলাম।

Amazonia—a wildly entertaining book that takes place in the scorching hot jungles of South America, has some interesting speculative science along the way, has good characters and a great setting. This was my first James Rollins book—a name I’ve seen around for awhile, but had never tried. I now know that I am a big James Rollins fan!

This book revolves around a team of scientists and military that are sent on a mission deep into the Amazon jungle to investigate the disappearance of a previous team presumed dead, after someone from that mission reappears—sick, injured and appearing to have regrown an arm that was lost years prior. He then died before he can explain what happened. The man is also bearing the mark of a mysterious uncontacted tribe, the Ban-Ali….a tribe that is feared and mythologized by the locals. Could the rest of the team still be alive? Also, whatever this man was sick with appears to be spreading around the world at an alarming rate. The jungle holds the answers. What will it tell them?

This writing is serviceable—nothing special, but I found the book virtually impossible to put down, so he does something right. The pace is breakneck, but it never feels rushed. I enjoyed the characters, and there is a villain here that is one of those truly hateable types, that has you angrily turning the pages to see what he does next, waiting for him to get his comeuppance.

So my first impressions of James Rollins are excellent—he seems to be a spiritual successor to Michael Crichton. There are lots of big ideas crammed into this book, but unlike Crichton (who I actually really like), this didn’t read like a film script outline with lots of dry info dumps. The science here was doled out sparingly and only added to the story. I have to admit, this book gave me some Congo vibes, but I think I actually prefer this novel. Rollins excels both where Crichton did, and also where Crichton was weak, and I think that’s a pretty big compliment! So I will without a doubt be dipping into James Rollins bibliography from time to time; in fact I’ve already picked up The Ice Hunt , and I’m planning on jumping in in merely a few weeks. I’ve seen Rollins do the sweltering hot jungle setting, now I can’t wait to see him take on a story I’m the ice cold North.

Overall, I couldn’t be happier that I’ve discovered James Rollins. His style is readable and gloriously entertaining, with well drawn settings, interesting science, and truly awful villains. I have to give it a 4/5 only because I wouldn’t put it in the same catagory as some of the truly great novels I’ve read, but that is not an insult. This book succeeds wonderfully at what it is going for, and for pure entertainment I would give it a 5. If you’re a fan of Crichton, Clive Cussler, or Preston and Child (who’s books also seem in a similar vein), I think Rollins may be just what the doctor ordered!

[4 Stars] I thoroughly enjoyed this novel! The science involved was absolutely fantastic, and I loved every second of it. Don't worry if you don't know much science though because it's all explained really well as you're reading. I also love to come across characters with my last name. Kelly and Frank O'Brien for the win. It definitely kept me on my toes for the whole duration learning about the native cultures and the different elements of the Amazon rain forest, not to mention all the crazy intense trials the characters have to go through. It's brutal. I think, for a thriller, this book took me longer to get through than I expected. It's just over 400 pages, so it's really not very lengthy. I also didn't fall in love with the characters (Manny and Tor Tor being the exceptions.) I just didn't feel for them if - no, when something terrible would happen to them. I definitely recommend it, and I hope to pick up some more James Rollins books in the future.

পাঠানুভূতি: আমি অনেক আগেই বলেছি আমি খুব একটা থ্রিলার প্রেমী না, কিন্তু ভালো থ্রিলার পেলে পড়ে ফেলি। কৌতুহল থেকেই কিনি 'আমাজনিয়া' বইটি, যখন পড়া শুরু করি তখনও বুঝি নি যে বইটা এত অসাধারন হবে। বইটার প্রতি পৃষ্ঠায় উত্তেজনা। একটুও বোরিং লাগবে না, কারন কিছু না কিছু ঘটে চলেছে সবসময়। এত অসাধারন এডভেঞ্চার থ্রিলার আমি আগে পড়ি নি। আরেকটা কথা না বল্লেই না, রাকিব হাসান যে অনুবাদ করেছে সে অনবদ্য কাজ করেছে! এত সুন্দর সাবলীল অনুবাদ আগে পড়ি নি। অনুবাদটাই যেন মৌলিকে রূপ নিয়েছে। :)

With the intrigue,mystery and it's huge landscape of uncharted territory of the Amazon, Rollins takes you on a fun adventure. With a good explanation's on the plant life, their different uses for healing by the natives, to all of the different critters that can be deadly, to the irratating insects...it's not a place I would like to spend a night in. Add in the search for a "miracle" drug, a hugh pharmaceutical company that will stop at nothing to be the first to get their hands on it, the action is nonstop.

I bought this book because the author has a reputation for weaving geography into his writing, and being a geographer myself, I wanted to see how well geographic themes worked.

If you are familiar with Clive Cussler, then these novels will resonate. Nathan Rand is this novel's "Dirk Pitt," an intrepid scientist who sets out on an expedition to discover how a former soldier makes it out of the Amazon covered up in cancer yet, miraculously, has regrown a limb. Said soldier was the sole survivor of an expedition to the Amazon whose members also included Rand's father, who never returned to civilization.

I'm not particularly picky about my fiction, especially "fun" fiction, such as novels like these.

Action is fast-paced, and the body count mounts early. Episodes of violence reach nearly ridiculous levels, stretching the imagination a little. These are not fantasy books, but yes, in a way, they are.

Rollins definitely uses some literary license in pursuit of an interesting story, for sure. That is where Rollins, Crichton, and Cussler sort of ride in their prose.

Rollins also melds together many current themes, cancer research, deforestation, the loss of biodiversity and the impact on disease research, and the treatment of native peoples. His characters are often found eloquently speaking about the dangers of cutting down the rain forest, how many species are lost, and the loss of research material that could potentially alleviate current or future diseases of mankind.

And, in the process, people get shot, killed, eaten, shot and eaten, eaten and burned, shot and partially eaten and blown-up, and turned into fertilizer.

If you've got a plane-ride, bus-ride, or an extended hospital stay, and you want something to keep your attention for a while, this book might do it.

A CIA agent named Gerald Clark walks out of an Amazonian jungle four years after his expedition disappeared without a trace. The fact that he has reappeared after so many years---long after he and the rest of his party were presumed dead---is amazing enough, but it’s not the most miraculous thing about the incident. When Agent Clark went into the jungle, he went in with only one arm, which he had lost during a stint in Iraq. When he returned from the jungle, he was in possession of two arms.

This is the starting off point for James Rollins’s novel “Amazonia”, published in 2002. Like his prior novels, Rollins wows his readers with edge-of-the-seat suspense, adrenaline-pumping action sequences, and thought-provoking scientific oddities and marvels. If any contemporary author has taken over the throne that the late Michael Crichton once sat in, it is Rollins.

“Amazonia” truly is a roller-coaster ride of a story, which throws into the mix a global pandemic, mutant piranha, a lost Amazonian tribe, a prehistoric tree that may hold the secret cure to every known disease on Earth, a villainous Frenchman working for an evil pharmaceutical company (I know: that’s redundant), a witch who likes to make shrunken heads (while the victims are still alive), and a guy with a pet jaguar.

What sets Rollins apart from other writers attempting to do what he’s doing is that Rollins happens to be a decent writer with a talent for storytelling. The two don’t always go together.

Rollins may not get the credit he deserves because he is writing in a genre that doesn’t get much credit for anything: contemporary pulp fiction. It is entertainment for entertainment’s sake, nothing more. Rollins is a modern-day Edgar Rice Burroughs. To those of us who love pulp fiction, you’ll appreciate the comparison. It’s meant to be high praise.

I look forward to reading more Rollins in the near future, especially his Sigma Force series, which I’ve heard nothing but good things.

Even though I gave this book three stars. For the most part I did find myself enjoying the story. It was an interesting read unlike most of the other books I read.

You follow main character Nathan Rand and his adventures. You also follow the O'briars Kelly and Frank.

And the characters were my biggest problem with this story. They were very bland. And I did not connect to any of there story's what so ever. And for me liking and connecting with the characters is a huge thing for me when I read a book.

My other big problem with the book is that it was a little long. And at certain points it bad way to much filler and things that just didn't need to be there.

While I did mention the length being a negative the book was a fast read for being five pages short of a 600 page book.

Overall I did enjoy this book and I do plan on reading more James Rollins because I did find this book overall being a good read. I just wish the characters were a little more well developed.

Words fail me. This book is pure joy, right from the first, till the last page. Great adventure, great mysteries and great action, mixed with likeable heroes, awesome monsters and extremely villainous baddies. And so much more... one have to read it, to understand how terrific it is. The best from Rollins I have seen so far.

রোলিন্স সাবেল লিখার আগে রিজেনারেটিভ বায়োলজি নিয়ে ভালই পড়াশুনা করেছেন মনে হইছে।
লিভিং জিন ব্যাংক এর আইডিয়াটা অন্য ধরনের সায়েন্স ফিকশন।
সব কিছু মিলে নতুনত্ব।

জেমস রলিন্সের এর আগে মাত্র একটা বই পড়া হয়েছে - ম্যাপ অফ বোনস। বেশ চটকদার এবং আকর্ষনীয় ভঙ্গিমায় লেখা। তাই হয়ত শুধু দুইটা বই পড়ে মত দেয়া যথেষ্ট হবে না, তবু বলছি এখন পর্যন্ত মন মাতানো লেখাই হাতে এসেছে।
প্লটের কথা আর কি বলব, রহস্যঘেরা আমাজন জঙ্গল, সেখানে আবার এক হাত নাই থেকে দুই হাত আছি হওয়ার কাহিনী - উফফ শুরুটা মাথা নষ্ট। আসলে সত্যি বলতে পুরা বইকে এক প্লটটাই টেনে নেয়ার জন্য যথেষ্ট।
হয়েছেও তাই। টানা ডিউটির মাঝে একটানা পড়তে না পারলেও অবসরটুকুতে একটানাই পড়েছি। ৪০০+ পাতার বই কোথাও একটুও ঝুলে গেছে বলে মনে হয় নি। প্লটটা এতই মজাদার আর উয়াপদেয় ছিল যে শর্ট কামিং গুলো বই শেষ না করে মাথাতেই আসে নি।
(এটুকুতে কিছু স্পয়লার থাকতে পারে, তাই সাধু সাবধান)
বইটার মেজর ফ্ল্য হল চরিত্রের ডেভেলপমেন্ট। বলতে গেলে কোন চরিত্রই ডেভেলপ হয়নি। লেখক অবশ্য সেই খামতি চরিত্র গুলোকে মেরে মেরে পুষিয়ে দিয়েছেন। উদাহরণঃ
ফ্র্যাঙ্ক চরিত্রটার কথাই ধরি - পুরা বই তে এর গুরুত্ব একটাই কাজে, পা গজানো। আর কোন কাজে একে প্রয়োজন ছিল কি?
প্রধান চরিত্র নাথান - সবজান্তা এক পুরুষ। এর দুঃখজনক অতীতও একে কাছের কেউ বানাতে পারে নি। আসলে মনে হয়েছে এ মারা গেলে নায়িকার কি হবে, ব্যস শেষ।
স্যু - একটূ অন্যরকম ক্যারেক্টার হলেও খুব একটা ইম্প্যাক্ট কি ছিল?
ম্যানুয়েল - টরটর কে পালছে, ও আর শেষে একটা কিছু করছে (পুরা বলব না)। একে সহজেই নাথান আর কাউয়িকে দিকে রিপ্লেস করা যেত।
এমন না যে সব চরিত্রই লঘু স্বভাবের। নায়িকা কেলী, ভিলেন লুই - আমার কাছে ইন্টারেস্টিং মনে হইছে।
(স্পয়লার শেষ, সাধু চাইলে আরামে দাঁড়াতে পারে)
তবে লেখকের টেকনিক্যাল দিকে জ্ঞান খুব ভাল লাগছে। আমি আমার দিকের কথা বলতে পারি, ব্যাখ্যা সমুহ গ্রহনযোগ্য। আর যেসবের ব্যাখ্যা দেন নি, তা পসিবল কিনা তা বললাম না (হলেও ত হতে পারে নাকি?)
শেষের দিকে একটা ফেয়ারি টেইল এন্ডিং হয়ে গেছে, এত চরিত্র মারা যাওয়ার পরও ফেয়ারি টেইল এন্ডিং বলার কারণ - শেষে এসে আমার মনেই হয় নি গুরুত্বপূর্ণ কোন ক্যারেক্টার মিসিং হইছে।

Amazonia is the perfect cross between a high action horror-thriller and a smooth science fiction adventure tale. Yes, all those things. A creature feature mixed with Michael Crichtonmixed with Outbreak set in an Indiana Jones/Alan Quartermaine world.

Read this. It's awesome. My only qualms was a somewhat rushed ending.

I heard a lot about this book (a lot).for me, its just like a regular hollywood action flick(a good one). there's no character development, no memorable dialogues but there's a lot of action and drama (a lot).I would like to watch the story on a screen (which will take at best 2.30 hours). so it's illogical to spend 6/7 hours to read the book.

Full disclosure: I used to LOVE James Rollins' books in middle and early high school. They were fun, action packed, interesting, and just on the verge of fantasy...fantastical realism, I'd say. Of the 4 I read, this one was my least favorite, because it wasn't as fun and interesting as the others. This was well over 10 years ago, so I decided to give this one a reread as it fit a book challenge. As a kid, I probably would have given this 4 stars. As an adult, the book's issues are much more apparent to me.

First of all, I was a bit put off by Rollins' consistent referring to the indigenous people as "Indians," but of course I'm not totally sure what the accepted nomenclature is for the tribes of the Amazon. These people seemed to be respectfully portrayed at times aside from the dubious naming, but there were also some issues and elements that make me question the author. For example, he uses the Yanomamo tribe throughout the book as the main tribe the hero is familiar with. The author's background is not in Latin American indigenous people, and there are no acknowledgments at the end of the book, so I wonder where he got his information from re: this tribe. One thing I did discover in searching for them is that the map shown at the beginning of the book does not seem to match up with the map of where the Yanomamo live. The other tribe, the Ban-ali, is a ~super scary and mysterious, almost mythological tribe for most of the book. This is a made-up tribe, as far as I could tell, but the mythos surrounding the tribe was that of a ruthless and scary tribe, which is a bit side-eye worthy coming from a white author.

The worst offense was the portrayal of Tshui, the villain's "woman" (literally how she was referred, as if she were his property) from the Shuar tribe. She was always silent, naked, and sexually eager. The only other thing we knew about her was that she was deadly and would make shrunken heads out of the people she and the villain killed. The misogyny is disgusting, and the fact that she's the only indigenous woman in the book (aside from a scene at the very beginning) makes the issues with her portrayal even more glaring. There is also a female Asian researcher on the team (unspecified country of origin) who is portrayed as highly intelligent but meek, with a soft and sweet voice. Great, more stereotypes. Also, both of these WOC die, and in the case of the Asian woman, it was needless and did not impact the plot at all.

It's not just WOC that Rollins mistreats, though the white woman is certainly treated better by comparison. In all of the Rollins novels I've read, there's gotta be a woman for the main hero. The woman in this one is a redhead from Boston named Kelly O'Brien. Can't get much more stereotypically Irish than that, can you? (This only stuck out to me because in another of his books, the main woman is actually from Ireland and her portrayal smacks you over the head with it, so I'm starting to wonder if there's a trend). The "Gary Stu" hero, Nathan, and Kelly meet for the first time by Kelly trying to treat an indigenous child with modern methods, for which Nathan yells at her for being stupid and careless. No joke. Yes, there's a point made here to respect different medical treatments from self-contained tribes like the Yanomamo even if they don't make sense to modern medicine, but it's made by the main woman getting lectured by the hero the second she appears, which doesn't sit right with me.

A large part of her character revolves around her having a daughter back home. Of course, the daughter is infected by the disease they're trying to cure, which puts Kelly in an emotionally compromised position. Throughout the book, she has a couple heroic moments, but is largely a non-entity aside from her occasionally exchanging glances with or getting comforted by Nathan. Of course, a few days into the expedition, they sleep together and it's the ~most wonderful thing ever.~ The next day, they're separated when the villain captures her and a few others, and the villain blows up the area where Nathan was. Kelly's thought, thinking Nathan is dead? "I will seek revenge for you Nathan, or die trying." Umm, hello? Shouldn't your first priority be getting back to your sick daughter, not seeking revenge for this dude you just met a few days ago? What terrible writing for that character.

Of course, Nathan lived, the villain got killed, they found the cure for the disease, and everyone lived happily ever after. Fast-forward 9 months, Nathan and Kelly are engaged and Kelly is miraculously pregnant from their night in the tree house, even though she had previously found out she couldn't have more kids. rme

I actually reduced this from 3 to 2 stars as I was typing this review. It's a moderately interesting read regarding the medical mystery plot points with plenty of action, but the characterization really ruins any good things this book has going for it. The cultural sensitivity or lack thereof is a topic with which I'm not well-versed, but I have a bad feeling about the portrayals in this book, and I wonder how accurate the things portrayed are to the tribes he describes. I tried searching for indigenous views on the book, but couldn't find anything through Google. If anyone has recommendations for resources to read on this topic, please let me know!

I'm curious now to go back and read the books I loved by him to see if I encounter similar issues. Something tells me I will, since his books are very formulaic from what I remember about the others. Self-insert Gary Stu hero, flat (and often stereotypically "kickass" and independent, yet they fall for the hero anyway) female character for the hero to fall in love with, diverse secondary characters to meet a quota (poorly), mysterious "other" people (usually of color), outrageous scenarios that no one should survive, and yet the main couple does and lives happily ever after. This guy is basically the Dan Brown of Indiana Jones-type action/adventure novels.

For most buddy reads that I have been a part of, the choice is mostly restricted to books that are rather dull or boring or something that I would possibly never be inclined to read on my own. But, this time it was different, and how! This book turned the tables completely for me, in that regard -racy and engaging with plots twisted more than a pretzel, this story is perfect for a movie script.

The detailing in the book is extraordinary- the author has done some pretty intensive research not just limited to the Amazon jungle or its denizens, but also with respect to the local flora and fauna( ever heard of chemical warfare in plants?). And that's what impressed me so much - the science behind it all. So many facts and interesting theories that were shrouded amongst those words of speculation and mystery, that by the time I finished reading the book, I was completely baffled.

Before I get your expectations soaring, let me clarify that there are sub-plots in the book, which are too good to be true and even predictable at times - for starters, no character is grey, and there is always the smart ass who saves the day ;)

But despite all that, what won me over was the painstaking detailing and the sheer brilliance with which he unravelled the story. And at the end of the day, that's what kept me hooked throughout.

Verdict : Makes for a thoroughly entertaining read.

আমাজনে গবেষণা করতে যাওয়া একটা দল পুরোপুরি নিখোঁজ হয়ে যায় বছর চারেক আগে।উদ্ধারকারী দল কোনো কূল কিনারা করতে পারে নি এই ঘটনার, হঠাৎ করেই যেন এতগুলো মানুষ হাওয়ায় মিলিয়ে গেছে। ঠিক এমন সময়ে চার বছর পরে খবর পাওয়া গেল ক্লার্ক নামের এক লোকের, সে ছিল ঐ গবেষণা দলের সদস্য!
হঠাৎ করেই মানুষগুলো যেমন মিলিয়ে গেছিল তেমনি হঠাৎ করেই দেখা দিয়ে না ফেরার দেশে চলে যায় ক্লার্ক আর সাথে রেখে যায় একরাশ রহস্য!
ক্লার্কের ফিরে আসার তথ্যের ভিত্তিতে শুরু হয় আরেকটি নতুন দলের যাত্রা; ভয়াল-সুন্দর আমাজনের গহীনে একটি শ্বাসরুদ্ধকর যাত্রা!

সত্যি বলতে এত সুন্দর হবে,আশাই করি নি।এডভেঞ্চার জনরাটা এমনিতেই অনেক ভালো লাগে কিন্তু বইটা আরও ভালো আর উপভোগ্য হয়েছে এর সুগন্ধী মশলার জন্য। আর এই সুগন্ধী মশলা হচ্ছে বায়োলজি!😁

I almost read the entire book in one evening, I just couldn't stop. James Rollins is master when it comes to writing adventure books and this book is so incredibly engrossing that I just couldn't stop reading. Just one more chapters, and suddenly it's two hours later. The only drawback? The romance, I don't know why, I just wasn't fond of it. I'm not against romance in adventure book, but I want it to feel real, and the romance between the main characters, well it was just corny, one step away from a harlequin novel, but beside that the book was really good!

ব্যান আলি।

না। আমি কিন্তু তিউনিসিয়ার সেই সাবেক প্রেসিডেন্ট ব্যান আলির কথা বলছি না :-P বলছি আমাজন জঙ্গলের এক রহস্যময় গোত্র ব্যান আলির কথা।
যেই গোত্রের নাম শুনলে ভয়ে কেঁপে উঠে গোটা আমাজন। এই গোত্রটি যেন নিষিদ্ধ কিছু। এর নাম উচ্চারন করাতেও মানা..... অভিশাপ নেমে আসে। যেই অভিশাপে ধংস হয়ে যায় সেই ব্যাক্তি এমনকি সেই ব্যাক্তির গোত্রও।
কিন্তু ব্যান আলি শব্দের আভিধানিক অর্থ কি না কৃতদাস। তাহলে? কি এর রহস্য?

এক বায়োলজিস্ট কার্ল র‍্যান্ড। আমাজনের জঙ্গলের অপার রহস্য আর কিছুটা এডভেঞ্চারের টানেই ছুটে বায়োলজিস্ট র‍্যান্ড ছুটে যান আমাজনের ভয়াল সবুজে। উপযুক্ত যোগাযোগ ও নিরাপত্তা ব্যাবস্থা থাকা সত্বেও সম্পূর্ন নিখোঁজ হয়ে যায় র‍্যান্ডের সেই দলটি। সেরা সব রেসকিউ টিমকে বৃদ্ধাঙ্গুলি দেখিয়ে একেবারেই লাপাত্তা হয়ে যায়। যেন তাঁদের গ্রাস করে নেয় জঙ্গলের রাজা আমাজন।

চারবছর পর।

এক সন্ধ্যায়। সেই হারিয়ে যাওয়া দলটির এক সদস্য ( সাবেক সিয়াইএ অফিসার জেরাল্ড ক্লার্ক) ফিরে আসে জঙ্গলেরই এক গোত্রে। বিস্ময়কর হলেও সত্য অভিজানে যাবার আগে ক্লার্কের ছিল এক হাত কিন্তু ফিরে এল দিব্যি দুইটি হাত নিয়ে!!!!! কিন্তু কপাল!!! আমাজনের রহস্য বিজ্ঞানীদের কাছে খুলে বলার জন্য সে আর বেঁচে ছিল না। শরীরভর্তি টিউমার যা রূপ নিয়েছে ক্যান্সারে। তাতে আক্রান্ত হয়ে মারা যায় ক্লার্ক। কিন্তু একগাদা প্রশ্ন রেখে মারা যায় ক্লার্ক। উপজাতিরা বলছে ক্লার্ক একটি জীবন্ত অভিশাপ। সে মৃত্যুর দুত হয়ে এসেছে।

শুধু তাই নয়। প্রথমে সেই গোত্র তারপর ব্রাজিল হয়ে আমেরিকায় ছড়িয়ে পড়ে মহামারী। হঠাৎ মহামারী ছড়িয়ে পড়ার কারন কি? এতেও কি হাত আছে সেই জঙ্গলের বিভীষিকাময় গোত্র ব্যান আলির?

সৃষ্টি হয় ধোঁয়াশার। রহস্যভেদে পাঠানো হয় একটি দলকে। ডাক্তার, এন্থ্রোপলজিস্ট, টেকনোলজিস্ট একটি বহুজাতিক কোম্পানির এম্পলয়ি ও আমাজন বিশেষজ্ঞ ও রেঞ্জার সংবলিত একটি টিম যায় রহস্য উদ্ধারে।

কিন্তু....

পথে পথে বিপদ যেন ওঁত পেতে আছে। আমাজনের প্রাকৃতিক বিপদ তো আছেই....... তাঁর উপর আছে ব্যান আলী গোত্রের অভিশাপ। তাতেই শেষ নয়। নাথানের নেতৃত্ব দেয়া দলটির পিছু নিয়েছে পুরানো শত্রুর শত্রুতা, মানুষের অপরিসীম লোভ, টাকা ও খ্যাতির মোহ।

পাতায় পাতায় আমাজনের ভয়াবহ সৌন্দর্যের হাতছানি.... তাঁর অব্যাখ্যাত রহস্য, অজানা শত্রু ও অজ্ঞাত রোগব্যাধি আর কঠিন সত্যের উদ্ধার অভিযান। সব মিলিয়ে কখন যে বইয়ের শেষ পৃষ্ঠায় চলে আসবেন বুঝতেই পারবেন না।

নিজের কথা : আমার পড়া আরেকটা দুর্দান্ত, মাথানষ্ট করা বই। কিন্তু একটা জিনিস বিরক্ত লেগেছে এন্ডিং বেশি মাত্রায় হ্যাপি এন্ডিং হয়ে গেসে। এরকম না হলে মে বি ভাল হইতো, অন্তত পড়ে মজা পাওয়া যেতো আরেকটু বেশি। কাকতালীয় ব্যাপারটাও ছিল একটু বেশি এগুলো ছাড়া খুবই ভাল। ম্যাক্সিমাম সময় অনুবাদ পড়ি আর নিজে নিজে চিৎকার করি.... আহারে মূল বইটি না জানি কত্ত সুন্দর!!! কিন্তু আমাজোনিয়ার অনুবাদ পড়ে সত্যিই কোন আফসোস হয়নি। আমার মনে হচ্ছিল নাথানদের সাথে আমিও যেন অদৃশ্য সদস্য হয়েই তাদের সাথে ছিলাম। শুধু একটাই আক্ষেপ ছিল..... আহারে আমার যদি সেই ক্ষমতা থাকত আমি অনুবাদক #রাকিব_হাসান ভাইয়ার হাত দুইটা সোনা দিয়ে বান্ধায় দিতাম। ভাইয়ার কাছে অনুরোধ প্লিজ আরো আরো বইয়ের অনুবাদ চাই :-D আর কি.... সবাইকে পড়ার আমন্ত্রণ :-P ইয়ে অবশ্যই কিন্তু হার্ডকপি।

His arm grew back?!
4yrs ago, a government scientific expedition team lead by Dr. Carl Rand had vanished in the unknown depths of the jungle of Amazon. Now after all these years one of the team members- a special force soldier comes out of the jungle and dies within hours from multiple diseases, scars and molestations. But, he has come out with both of his arm although he had gone in with only one! Now the government decides to lead another expedition to trace back the missing years following the dead soldier's path with a team of scientists and soldiers. They also enlist Nathan Rand(son of Carl Rand) who wants to solve his father's death at any cost with the help of his friends. But little does he know that there is one more contender of their findings who lurches behinds them hiding in their shadows while the unseen horrors and ancient secrets of Amazon waits for all of them!

Ok, I was hooked with just the premise itself! The plot is very engaging. I have read many science fiction and adventure novels but mostly those focus on technologies very much. But rarely comes novels like Amazonia which focuses on the raw nature and its horror! the wilderness, the jungle, its animals, weird bugs, medicinal leaves - all of these knits a gripping and enjoyable story which is decorated with stupendous action, chase and one after another twists. The jungle's description and the actions are written so well that it feels like happening in front of the eyes like a movie (will come back to this point). With betrayal, revenge and a good villain thrown into that, James Rollins has really written a fantastic gripping novel.

Each of the characters are living through the pages and feels very very realistic. Manny, Prof. Kouwe, Tor-Tor became friends of mine too along with Rand. Nathan Rand is one of the best heroic characters that I have read. His anger, sadness and bravery really leaves a mark on the reader's mind.

Sadly the books is very very cinematic at some places. It kind of does feel like a sci-fi adventure movie with little bits of Predator thrown in. But what really hurt me was that the 2nd half of this book is almost a blue print of the movie AVATAR by James Cameroon!! Amazonia came out on 2001-02 whereas AVATAR was out on 2009. The jungle, animals and intriguing story elements are so similar that it feels uncanny to be 'just a coincidence'! It even felt as if Mr. Cameron ripped off some of the pages of this book to write the script. I usually like movies of Mr. Cameron but this sad realisation left a bitterness when I finished the book.

I highly recommend this book to any science fiction or adventure lovers.
