SHE WAS THE CHOSEN ONE… UNTIL SHE WASN'T.

Josie Day has spent her life training to lead the Core—summoners who use ancient masks to channel the elemental powers of the gods.

But then her mother is murdered by a mysterious Earth Goddess. And the power meant to be Josie’s passes to her sister instead. Worse, the Earth Goddess escapes.

Now, Josie must prepare her sister to lead the fractious Core. Except her sister would rather be hanging at the mall with her too-perfect boyfriend. And, in truth, Josie would rather be hunting down the Goddess.

When the Goddess returns and attacks, a shadowy Fire God comes to the rescue. But until Josie knows who is behind the mask, she isn’t sure she wants his help or the heat igniting between them.

With the Goddess plotting a war against humanity, Josie has to accept what she’s lost if she’s going to save what she has left.

I think I might have developed a love/hate relationship with this book. On one hand, it's got everything I want in an urban fantasy: unique plot device, strong lead, well written, lots of action, has me up reading when I should be asleep. But in the other, there were some things that drove me nuts, such too many harsh and unsympathetic people, especially family who pile on the MC, and prospective love interest who is squirrelly as all get out (though to be fair, there is an angsty boy in black who actually *isn't* the love interest, so points for that).

I definitely loved the "chosen one who isn't chosen" aspect and I loved Josie's real emotions (and lack of) when trying to come to terms with this. I'm glad she was given a support network of friends because really, the way her father and sister act towards her (and allow others to treat her) for most the book had my blood pressure going up.

Biggest issue though for me was definitely the identity of Fire Guy. I kept hoping it wasn't going to go in the direction it did. Alas, we shall see if Josie comes to her senses or not.

Beyond those very subjective issues, this was well worth the read.

This is one of the best fantasy worlds I have been introduced to in a long time; just wish it was a 20-volume series with a pack of tireless ghost writer clones of this author working day and night on more!

The general ethos of the story reminded me of the feel you get from Ursula LeGuin's novel, The Tombs of Atuan--with that kind of strong cultural and ceremonial richness, but refreshingly less overt ceremony and sanctimony in this instance. The character richness reminded me of Robin McKinley's adult novel, Sunshine in that the emotional profiles and behavior are totally contemporary and real; the female main characters ring true and the friends are not sidekicks like in a lot of YA fiction but whole, rich human beings with compelling plots of their own. The romance in this book-- OUTSTANDING; it will keep you very deliciously on your toes. And the world that is built around the characters is so seamless I almost have trouble crediting the author for imagining it-- it just doesn't seem imagined; I'm sorry. The way things work in this world is really novel and exciting; obviously I don't want to give it away-- I might compare it to the way I felt when I was reading the Philip Pullman book, The Subtle Knife as he explains how the knife works. The way things work in the Minor Gods world, once it gets going is similarly stand-back-and-applaud awesome. I wasn't able to put this one down and then I got the second and third book on amazon and ploughed through them all in one undernourished and sleep-deprived, but very... very happy weekend. So all I can say is, enjoy...

“She wanted the heat to stay, to surround and fill and melt her, all the way through.”

Josie Day spent her whole life training to become the next Triune. Until one day, her mother – which is the current Triune – had been killed and out of nowhere, the powers that should be passed to Josie had been passed to her sister Tessa who is definitely not willing to do the job.

Reading the prologue, I really thought that this is nothing compared to Stealer, my first read from Miss A.M. Yates which I really like. The prologue is really confusing because of the terms that you will only understand if you carry on reading. And Josie swears a lot on the prologue which made me have a very bad first impression about her. After reading the prologue, I actually had a hard time making myself proceed because I really thought that I will not like it. Well, I was proven wrong.

Josie Day is bad ass. She’s focused, always in control. I love her character. She was trained all her life to lead. Before, they thought she was someone very important assuming that she will be the next Triune. Now, they just thought she was a reject. While grieving, seeking for revenge and accepting the fact that she is not the Triune, Josie slowly becomes someone she hadn’t expected her to be – normal. From being so guarded and control freak, she begun feeling things she haven’t felt before. She used to think that you can always control the emotions you will let yourself feel, that feelings are just distractions but now, it seems like she’s not that Josie anymore. And I like it, I like how her character slowly changed.

The characters in this book are very much like real. Their different personalities are keeping things in balance. They are just too perfectly fit for their roles. And I really can’t wait to have more of Beech, my favorite. If Josie hated Judah at the very start, I also feels the same and hated him even more at the end.

“I’m going to release you now,” he said.

She nodded, too focused on holding back the tears to speak.

“This is probably going to hurt,” he said.

The romance is what I really love in this book. One sided love. Not knowing if he feels the same. And not wanting to fall in love at all. I love the idea of a human falling in love with a god – a fire god. And the idea of not knowing who is the summoner behind this mask, who is the human summoning this god, and who are you really falling in love with. There is just the right amount of pain and romance between this two that will make its way through your heart and will make you feel the way how hurt and in love the character(s) are.

The world building is great, too strong. It’s just another typical not-easily-comprehendible world from Miss A.M. Yates. She’ll introduce us to a world full of gods. I like the things about the gods and summoning them by using masks and there are also Charms and the Core, the Tribe, the Eye, the Beyond and many more which I really find hard to remember and understand at first. It will really make your imagination work. Though almost half way through it, I began to seek for romance because I find these things about gods too much and the romance had been focused only almost at the end which I just realized eventually, made things balanced.

The first book in the Summoners series is definitely focused on its fantasy thing rather than anything but the end made me hope that the book two will be different. I’m really hoping for more of the romance in this book because it’s just really great that I am really in need to feel the love and the pain of the characters involved again.

The ending answered questions that may shock you (if you don’t have a guess like mine), make you cringe, or probably hurt you on what is about to happen.

After reading this, all I really want is more. Miss A.M. Yates gives us another cliff hanger. And I really need the second and final installment ASAP. It is just another series fantasy lovers will enjoy.

Thank you very much Miss A. M. Yates for providing me a copy in exchange of an honest book review. The book received didn’t affect my review.

Book sent to me in exchange for an honest review, this does not impact my views or review in any way.

This was a really refreshing read by author Amy Yates, I had previously never heard of this series until I was sent a review copy of the book and what a read it is!!

Review:

Minor Gods is such a good read, I was so impressed by the action and the impact of the book and the brilliant character build up throughout the novel. The idea that people can posses magic enough to build masks and inhibit Gods is so unusual and the original story line was something I fell for straight away.

I definitely felt more for the characters of Minor Gods and was really impressed with the growth of Josie and her complicated relationships with her sister and the other characters. The beginning was such a smasher too, imagine diving into a death straight away, it reminded me of the thrill of game of thrones.

Josie is such a good protagonist to write and read from as she is not the infallible character that you expect her to be but you see her development and her progression over time through the novel and the hardships that she has to overcome. The loss of a parent so early in the book was a real shock to the readers system but set up a very descriptive and well balanced plot line very quickly. The romance between Judah and Josie is amazing as well. It took time for Tessa to grow on me but by the end it was easy to emphasise with her as well. It must be horrid to be thrown out of your comfort area into the turmoil of responsibility and power.

I was genuinely surprised by the way the plot went and the twists as you find out who the villain of the story is, as far as YA novels go it was a brilliant read and i was really impressed by the attention to detail and the way that the novel leaves you wanting more. The plot surprises and the amazing narrative really made up for any YA novel predictability that could have come about.

The idea behind the narrative and the unique new twist on the old gods and humans story-line where people can actually learn to control and allow gods to inhabit them was amazing, so creative and very worthwhile to read. In summary a definite 4.5/5 read and the words that I express cannot do the story justice in themselves. Don’t just take my word for it though, take a leap, buy the book and see for yourself.

I was a bit skeptical when i saw nearly nothing but good reviews for this book, and I thought that's The result of getting friends and/or family tho write reviews ( I've seen it before). I stand corrected though.

Pros:

The Powers: The masks revealed in the Prologue were so cool. I enjoyed how the powers worked, though a bit of the terminology was confusing in the beginning...but that's to be expected in a book that has powers in it. It became easier to understand what the characters were talking about quickly enough.

The humanizing journey of Josie: I rather enjoyed seeing the slow uncoiling of Josie's tightly wound emotions. Her emotional progression was believable, given how closed off she was for roughly ten years. Seeing such a closed off person naturally make friends (and more?) was a treat.

The writing/pacing: Yates' writing was tight, concise and wasted no words. Once I got into the story, I honestly didn't want to stop reading. This book was a great read.

The Characters: Yates knows how to write good characters, relatable characters (well as relatable as characters in a world with magic can be). I can honestly say that I enjoyed most, if not all of the characters. The last book(s) that I experienced that was a romance series by B.C. Burgess called the Mystic Series. I'm definitely looking forward to seeing more about these characters. It was a fun read, with the balance of drama, humor, action and romance. Though, the romance aspect was a little underwhelming for me at times. Looking forward to getting the other two I the series.

Cons:

The only one I had is a minor spoiler. The identity of the "Fire Guy" Josie is so obsessed with. I found out the summoner's identity way too easily. I mean, it was obvious fairly early on who it was. Other than that though...great read.

Minor Gods was sent to me in exchange for an honest review, and I have to say I'm so glad it was because otherwise I probably never would have heard of it!
Minor Gods had the same pace that I loved from Stealer. Fast paced, action packed, but still with more then enough character bonding/down time. The reader is thrown right into the story head first during the prologue and it doesn't slow down from there.

I liked Stealer, but I loved Minor Gods. One of the reasons is because I definitely connected with the characters in Minor Gods more. Not that I didn't connect on Stealer, but you really get to know the character in Minor Gods far more then you did in Stealer.

I loved Josie as a main character, she wasn't perfect and was really relatable. She was strong willed, and I love that in a main character. My absolute favorite character though was Judah (no surprise there!). Judah is the love interest, the real one, and has a love/hate relationship with Josie. This book had so many great characters though, I can't even begin to list them all. I loved Simone and Kai, and even grew to love Tessa.
Now I don't want to say too much about the plot and give anything away, but I was genuinely surprised by who the villain was. Certain aspects of the plot were predictable, but that's just how YA novels are. But it didn't take away from the quality, and there were a few things that really did surprise me.
The idea behind Minor Gods was probably my favorite part. It's basically a secret society within our modern day society filled with magic and gods. What's not to love? It was confusing at times, there were no explanations in the beginning the way most YA fantasy books have, but once you get further into the novel it's easier to keep up.

The summary for this book seriously doesn't do it justice, take my word for it. Don't read the summary, just buy the book. You won't regret it, I promise. This one is 4.5 stars out of 5 for me, half a star being taken away for a bit of confusion in the beginning. I get paid tomorrow and the first thing I'm going to do is order the rest of this series.

This book was a roller coaster of action and emotion for me. There were characters that annoyed me at the beginning. They were so cruel and unsympathetic to Josie. She literally witnessed something that would break most young girls and they couldn't give her the slightest bit of sympathy. Judah pushed her harder than most of them and I couldn't understand it at first. Later in the book I understood why but still think he was too harsh. Once Josie proved herself not quite so useless they seemed to ease up on her and I really enjoyed the story line from there. The villain and the male hero were a bit obvious and I guessed who they were well before they were revealed. However, I really enjoyed the story and am looking forward to the next one.

Minor Gods by A.M. Yates

I received this ebook free from the author. I was not asked to write a positive review. The opinions are my own. Receiving a complimentary ecopy did not affect my review of this book.

When I first started A.M. Yates’ book Minor Gods, I was wondering what I had gotten into. There was talk of Phantasmal TemperMentals, the Tripartite, the Triune, Summoners, and masks. But my interest was piqued too. Right from the first word, I was pulled in. I may not have understood what all those words meant, but right then, I didn’t need to. I knew that something big and bad was happening.

After being pulled (or yanked?) into the story, A.M. Yates didn’t let up. She brought me right into a world of masks that held gods, summoners and mystical charms, and good versus evil. The fantasy world she created was so real, so logical, so magical, but so down to earth at times (remember this is a YA book with normal teenage angst thrown in) that I could really settle into (or on the edge of) my seat and actually visualize what was happening.

The characters were well written and fully developed. I got so caught up in the lives of the characters (many of whom I really liked, and some I really didn’t) as well as the action, I couldn’t put it down. In fact, as I was skimming through the book again for this review, I kept getting caught up in the story again, and had to force myself to move ahead. As it was, I ended up staying awake until the wee hours of the morning to finish it again!

I was frustrated with the ending, however. I wanted answers at the end of the book with everything tied up in a neat package. I didn’t get that satisfaction. The book ended with many unanswered questions...aaargh! Then I saw that this was a first book in a series. So, I just had to get the other two books in that series. I can’t wait to find out what happens next…

original review @ JC's Book Haven.

It’s all the same ceremonial rigmarole until a pissed off earth goddess busts in with a few minor gods and a cadre of phantasmal TemperMentals. Then everybody’s screaming and running for their lives.

The Good
Now this one felt really fresh and unique for me. I love the fact that the available powers to use in this are almost endless. So many gods of different power levels to base masks off. Josie is a fireball of sarcasam. She doesn't back down at all when she thinks she is pretty much powerless. She still gets in anyone's face that tries to hold her back or contradict her. Her sister though is nothing like her for the most part. She's a bit more pampered and high strung. Plus there is a great support cast of characters that I want to know more about.

The Bad
The only thing that bugged me was I have no clue how strong their tribe is. All the problems that pop up seem to be dealt with by the younger generation despite the most powerful mask wearer having been their leader. Without her, their tribe seems pretty weak to be honest. Hopefully in book two we'll get to see a bit of the older mask wearers and what they are capable of doing.

The Romance
There is plenty of teen romance, open relationships and even some triangle drama.

Conclusion
Overall I can't wait to read book two in the series. The powers and how they are manifested drew me in, The characters are likeable, while the villain is easy to dislike without knowing who they really are. The action is fun and plentiful even if it comes about because they put them selves out there because being safe is boring. They are teenagers after all. If you enjoy unique sci-fi/paranormal, I'm sure you'll enjoy this one.

I was really happy with this book and enjoyed it immensely. Considering I do not finish most free ebooks, finishing one that I enjoyed throughout is pretty rare.

What did I like about this book?

You can tell from the description that the plot follows a basic subversion: the chosen one who turns out to not be the chosen one and instead the mantle goes to the younger sibling who does not want it. The younger sister Tessa is not really the focus of the story, though. Josie has to deal with losing her title and finding out who she is without it and what role she has now.

And I found the characters enjoyable. I'll try not to harp on about other free books, but being able to not only distinguish between the characters but like them is a momentous achievement. I can often enjoy books that have dull characters that blend together, but the characterization is such a positive that should be expected but I feel is often overlooked. And I can believe that the characters are friends! There are explanations for why characters who date one another like each other, even if they seem like an odd pairing.

And it is pretty easy to figure out the twist at the end, even if I didn't really like it. I might complain about predictability and some overused tropes that the twist relies on, but I feel it's handled in a way that stays true to the characters and takes the risk of alluding to the twist instead of making it come out of nowhere and defy logic.

The universe is interesting and well-developed. It didn't feel like a lifeless backdrop. I also enjoyed how the story moved at a brisk pace so it didn't drag too much. I was worried about getting a cliffhanger that only gives me part of the story, and despite the open ending for sequels (because writers need to eat), the story does wrap up while leaving room for continuation.

Very well done with lots of enjoyment. If you're convinced, I'd definitely recommend it.

Wow !! This was the first book I have read by A.M.Yates, and I am so glad I came across it. The author had a great way of engaging and drawing you in from the first page. But I warn you, forget any sleep until you have finished the book because I couldn't put it down. The plots had just enough description,, so you could see them with your minds eye, but not to flooded that it defer's you from the actual story. I felt this was written with depth and an absolute investment in the main character who had strengths but also vulnerabilities at the same time, in some places a few life lessons was thrown in amongst it, if you look inward at how she became. We learn tidbits about the other characters as they evolved and when was needed, there is much more to be told through there eyes and thoughts. I read it all in the voice of the characters, which I feel gives you More of an understanding than by a third storyteller, which I prefer. The story is well defined, you know exactly where you are from beginning to end..This book has lots going on, but all with one common goal, giving it in some places an edge of seat quality. It is has purity, strength, weakness, friendship, scepticism, grief, danger, mystery, betrayal, love and so much more. But all written in a talented hand that makes all those emotions feel real within me. I don't like giving spoilers as I believe everyone should experience the story first hand themselves. I would definitely recommend this book to any mythological, fantasy, paranormal book lover. All in all, this book felt original, it left me in floods of tears, and I can imagine there is so much more to come, and I can't wait.

Right from the start!

Wow! The action started from the first sentence and just kept going. Josie was raised to control all emotions so she comes across as cold when she's anything but. After her mom's murder, she goes back to her dad and sister. That's when she finds out that the position she'd been training for skipped her and went to her younger sister.

Everyone in her "tribe" thought she was dead as Tessa was the new Triune. Josie - and everyone else - was stunned as the gods had allowed her to be marked as heir. (The book does take place as a modern day.) What no one knew was the gods had another fate for her. One that hadn't been seen in 2000 years.

Tessa, Simone, Kai, Beech, Judah are fantastic as friends/family/frenemies. The other characters are well thought, too. Nancy was thoroughly dislikable.

Action, adventure, magic, terror, murder, and even a love story. Even some teenage angst. But these aren't your typical teenagers. I had to buy the next two books in the series. How's that for a recommend? I think I can count on one hand that I've done that.

This is the first book in the Summoners Series by A. M. Yates. Josie Day is a mask maker who lives in a world where people who wear masks become gods that wield powers called Summoners. Josie becomes a Summoner after her mother is killed by an Earth Goddess. The world is filled with various types of gods, such as air gods, mountain gods, fire gods, swamp gods, and water gods. Lydia is Josie's sister who is a Summoner who can channel the elemental powers of gods and control the Earth Goddess. While on their journey Josie and Lydia meet Kaleb a Summoner who has secrets of his own. Josie and Lydia meet Eleri who helps them understand their abilities and the world of Summoners. They also meet Alec on their journey. Josie leads a network of Summoners called the Core to help Lydia understand and control her new powers. I really enjoyed this fascinating young adult fantasy novel.

I'll admit at first I thought this book was boring. It was different and kind of strange but the characters started to grow on me and the story line became a little more interesting. There was a lot of chemistry between that characters. Some you liked, some you didn't and some that became a little over played. As the book continued I found myself getting sucked into it and I wanted to see where it was leading. Then it ended and I HAD to know what was going to happen next and immediately bought the next book. Over all I'm glad that I took the time and didn't give up on this book!

I got this book free as a recommendation from another author.
I almost dropped it at the beginning, I got tired of the lack of explanation of the situation, it was not clear what I was reading.. then I got tired of Josie´s attitude. But I kept reading and I have to say that halfway the book, the story got more action and the final was interesting, I´m planning on reading the sequel some time in the future.

Soooo gooood!

Loved it!
Awesome! Can’t wait to read Book 2.

What a great cast of characters in a unique world with its set of rules. I had to give myself kudos for figuring out who Earth Mama was pretty early. Boom!

Never seen an earth goddess depicted like Earth Mama before. She is definitely memorable and unhinged. Gotta read the book!

Good

I enjoyed this book. Josie is, well, confused, the life she thought she would have is not hers, the life she knew has been torn from her. And she is struggling to find her New purpose, and see that which is right under her nose.

Read this when I was quite youn, can’t really remember it, might be problematic as many paranormal romance books of that time tend to be but I also had a lot of fun so it might also be a hidden gem who is to say?
I’m very scared but very tempted to reread it.

Not: Yorumun yazılış tarihi Eylül 2014.

"her gece, oradasın."

My rating: 1.5/5

Another one book we received from an author, just this time - an e-book. I used to think I like reading e-books, but I start to realize I don't. They are a great solution if there isn't any other way to read some book, but a real book is always more pleasant to read. So, maybe because it's an ebook, maybe because I am a big fantasy hater (only even if it's something written by S. Meyer, George Martin or J.K. Rowling, then, I am a big fantasy fan), but I stopped reading Minor Gods after about 100 pages, maybe less. I had this thought in my head that I must read this book until the end because the author is very sweet and I like the new cover of this book and it actually sounds so good from the synopsis, but no. I realized I can't, and I actually shouldn't persuade myself into reading a book. Maybe it's actually bad, or maybe it's just not my taste, but I didn't like it and that's the fact I shouldn't hide.

I guess the problem was that I couldn't understand the major things. There are just so many fancy titles, names, places, and traditions and I got very confused. I couldn't discern who actually is ruling everything, how this Summoners world works. I still tried to read, but it just got too weird. Ancient masks, spirits, powers, that's just not for me. I never complain if there is some fantasy in the book (for example I really loved The Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater), but there is too much fantasy which isn't based on the logic (by science or something like that) in this one. I mean, someone summons an ancient powerful God and attacks a group of children, but no one of the normal people notices? Maybe normal people don't know about Summoners? I didn't understand such things and that annoyed me. Also, the sister of the main character, I don't even remember her name, and, actually, the other characters were very annoying. Josie, the main character, I think actually could have been a good, strong protagonist, but she is just too loud, too arrogant, so eventually I just started hating her too. Maybe Judah is a little better, but not something I would fall for. Moreover, synopsis promises a great romance, but after reading 100 pages, there still is none. I really thought it will get better with romance that could draw me into the book, but I didn't even find a hint of it.

However, more I think, I guess the reason why I couldn't finish this book is that I don't like books with so much fantasy. I also noticed that A.M. Yates writing is very rich, her sentences not banal, the author chooses rarer, not very often used words. She creates a completely different, well-thought world. So, this book could be a great pick for fantasy lovers, also some Percy Jackson's adventures fans. Just not for me.

Good luck to the author with her upcoming works and thanks for an e-book!

Lots of love,
Marta

I will be completely honest up front and say that young adult and paranormal romance don't generally pop up on my radar. Nothing against the genre, it just hasn't been something I have been interested in. There are times, however when something is done so well and is so effective that you enjoy it regardless of the genre. Good writing is good writing, regardless of the form. I don't generally care for country music, but I like Johnny Cash. I don't really watch very many westerns but put Clint Eastwood in a serape and I'm on board. I might not be a fan of the YA genre, but I am definitely a fan of A.M. Yates.

There are two things in particular that Yates seems to excel at. First, she has a remarkable eye for character and for developing a point of view that is incredibly vivid and original. Her character's voices come through the text loud and clear and it is a pleasure to just sit back and listen. It's always a treat to see a writer take such an interest in their characters. So often in books, you have an ensemble of people who are really just different variations of the protagonist. In this case, all of the characters take up their own unique space and add different, but essential elements to the story.

Second, Yates has a great ability to create a world that is somehow completely fictional but also familiar. I find myself often thinking about Tolkien in reference to his world building ability. When I read the Lord of the Rings, I never feel like I'm reading about a fantasy universe that the writer is making up. I feel like somewhere out there, I could find a library of actual history of Middle Earth, as if it was a real place that Tolkien just happens to be the authority on. With Minor Gods, there is so much attention to detail; so many different little things about the universe of the book that come up and are communicated to the reader in such an enjoyable and natural fashion. She plans out and develops the world of her story to staggering levels of detail.

The book is paced brilliantly and there is just the right amount of narrative proximity to the protagonist to give us as the readers great insight into her frame of mind throughout the story. As the first book of a series, this does exactly what it should be doing, namely introducing us to the primary players and end the book leaving us wishing there was another three hundred pages and searching for the second book, which the author was generous enough to have ready for publication as well.

I can't recommend this book enough for anyone looking for an enjoying read. It is always nice to find books that are both entertaining and smart and Yates has nailed that target dead center. I was privileged enough to be a part of the support team for this book as a beta reader and I believe strongly in this author. Give the book a try. I bet you won't be disappointed.

Let me start off with the fact that the Prolongue was very confusing to me. I think this was because there were so many new concepts that were introduced right off. Did that make sense? Anyways, I more skimmed that part than read it. Moving on...I loved the story! It was completely different from what I've been reading and I'm not even sure if I read something like this before...using the masks that represent different gods/goddesses. It was a unique idea. In the end, although Josie had a hard time figuring out who the fire guy was, I did not.

Questions/Comments:

1. How old was Judah? Considering Josie is 17 and Tessa is only 15...Judah sounded like he was a good amount older.

2. I don't understand why everyone was being so mean towards Josie since she wasn't the Triune. I mean she'd spent most of her life training and all for that...god forbid they can give her a break and be a little compassionate.

3. I found it strange that Earth Mama knew who Josie's friends were, yet, didn't know that she couldn't fix masked on command.

4. When contemplating where she should cut the fire guys mark on her, she decides not to do her foot because anyone watching would think it weird she would take her shoes/socks off. Yet....she didn't think anyone would notice her pulling her pants down and lifting her shirt?

5. During the escape the vines are dragging Josie to Earth Mama's sanctuary. Why did Josie end up hoping that she wasn't going to be sacrificed? Why would Earth Mama kill her when she wanted her to help fix the masks?

6. I was not a fan of Josie at the end, with the fact that she was making out with fire guy/Judah without knowing who he was, getting naked with him, while he's fully clothed...and then not bothering to talk to him? I don't think she's in love with him, the summoner, or the god. Obviously, there was something that drew her to the fire mask, but I think she's just sexually repressed or something.

I absolutely love fantasy books so I already knew this was going to be amazing!
Josie Day who is the main character, thought her whole life that she was the chosen one but she finds out, after her mothers death, that she is not and it is in fact her sister, Tessa.
This is unlike most fantasy books that I have read where there have been creatures among humans. This is so new and beautifully written. It involves people called summoners who use ancient masks to channel the elemental powers of gods.
I went into this book knowing nothing about it because I prefer not to read the synopsis, and I fell in love with the world. There was talk about the Triune, TemperMentals, masks, Summoners and the Trarpartite which I had no clue what any of that was. But right from the first sentence, I was hooked. I didn't understand what those words meant but I didn't need to. Fantasy books create a whole world you've never heard of and as you read, you just start to understand everything.
There is romance, friendships, action, adventure, love - everything you need in a great YA fantasy book!
I loved how through the book I was able to visualise everything so clear in my mind - right into a world full of summoners, masks, TemperMentals and Triunes.
However, I was annoyed at the end because I have a lot of unanswered questions which will not be answered anytime soon as I do not have the second book of this series. But I honestly loved this book and can definitely see myself reading it over and over again.
Thank you A.M. Yates for creating this amazing world and I can't wait to find out what happens next. I really hope I'm able to get my hands on the second book sometime soon!

**I was given this book to review by the Author A.M. Yates, in exchange for an honest review**

So, This is only the 3rd Mythology book that I have ever read. My first two I have also written reviews about. So I am still considered a newbie to the world of mythology. With this book it was a bit hard for me to follow the first half of the book I was worried that I would not be able to finish it. However, that most definitely wasnt the case.

"Minor Gods" is Book One of "The Summoners" series. Book two is "Lost Gods" And book three is "Fated Gods" I will eventually be buying both of those, because of the way "Minor Gods" ended, I have to find out how this whole story will pan out.

There were so many characters, that I thoroughly enjoyed. Simmone, Kai, Josie, Beech, Gretchen, and Judah, (he was a tough one, part of me dislikes him, and the other part of me loves him) I found myself rooting for Judah, the real jerk of the book. There is another character, that I love, but I don't want to post about this character, so I don't spoil anything.

Mrs. Yates did such a great job with this book, and with her true writing skills, has left me wanting more. I need to know how this story ends, I need to see that this group of characters gets the ending they deserve.

I am happy that I came across Mrs. Yates Instagram page, and asked if she would be willing to let me review her book. I look forward to following her, on her long career!

Be sure to give her a follow on her Instagram page https://www.instagram.com/author_amya...

Would give this 4.25 stars. I'm not sure how I stumbled on this book, but I'm glad I gave it a chance. It was different from anything I'd read before and I can't wait to read the rest of the series.

Spoilers

The premise involves gods and masks, but not any gods I've been familiar with in other such novels. These are air gods, mountain gods, fire gods, swamp gods, water gods, and on and on. There are people called summoners who can put on masks and become the gods, or wield their powers while they have the mask, but the main character is Josie, who is something different, something not seen in a long time; a mask maker. The book starts with her watching her mother get murdered, which sets up the main conflict of the book which is to bring her mother's killer to justice. Sounds simple, but there is so much rich, world building and character development that you realize quickly you'll have to read all the books in the series to really enjoy the whole story. It's a quick read, and I'll admit I had trouble keeping track of some of the characters and concepts, like the Core and exactly what the Triune does, etc., which is part of why I didn't give it 5 stars. Also, I wanted more romance, but that is a personal preference and I have a feeling I'll get more in book 2. I figured out who the fire god was pretty early, but there were enough red herrings to make me second guess it until the end. Well done.

The Synopsis

Josie Day spends her time training to lead the Core ( summoners who wear ancient masks to summon the powers of the Gods). When Josie's mother is murdered by a Goddess, the power that should be hers, passes to her younger sister. Josie's sister doesn't even want the powers. Her sister just wants a normal teenage life. When the Goddess returns, she brings with her a new war. Its up to Josie and a fire God to save them all.

The Review

Lets start off by saying how much I loved the main character Josie! She was so hardcore! Her character truly develops into something more. She goes from this bad ass, controlling girl to someone even better. Regardless of this being a fantasy type book, the characters and their interactions seemed so real. Some of the characters you develop a real love/ hate for, but in a good way. The premise of the book was wonderful as well. It was set in everyday life but hidden from average humans. The quality of the writing was wonderful as well. While I loved her other book Stealer, this one captivated me even more. I was blown away by how sucked into the world of this book I became. This was such a unique YA novel. Truly a one of its kind. If you like Percy Jackson types of elements this is for you! 5 stars from me! Thank you A.M for sending me this book in exchange for my honest review.
