The much anticipated sequel to "Searching for Steven"
It was supposed to be the perfect fairy-tale. Elise married her childhood sweetheart, Gary, straight out of college, and they’ve been happy together for over twelve years. Elise is now desperate to start a family, but Gary doesn’t seem to share her enthusiasm anymore. Arriving home early from a party, she discovers why: Gary’s been keeping a secret from her. A very big secret.
While her own marriage appears to be falling apart, being a supportive bridesmaid for her best friend, Sarah, isn’t easy. Especially not when Clare, her nemesis from day one, is one of the other bridesmaids. If she’s going to get through it, she needs to put her own feelings aside, find herself again, and get over Gary. Fast.
Could recently-divorced Daniel be the tonic Elise needs, or is he full of secrets and lies too? Is his hostile, but strangely attractive brother, Michael, the genuine article instead? And why do the good guys like Stevie turn her down?
But then Elise discovers she has a secret of her own and getting over Gary suddenly becomes the least of her worries…
I was born in Teesside but now live in Scarborough on the stunning North Yorkshire Coast. My home inspired the creation of the fictional seaside town of Whitsborough Bay where I set many of my books although the Hedgehog Hollow series takes readers to a gorgeous new countryside setting in the Yorkshire Wolds.
I live with my husband, our teenage daughter and sprocker spaniel, Ella. I'm a self-confessed stationery addict with a ridiculously large collection of notepads who loves chocolate (although it doesn't love me), hedgehogs, 80s music, collectible teddy bears and lighthouses.
Other than a career detour into retail to set up and run my own teddy bear shop (the inspiration for novel Bear With Me), I've always worked in HR, specialising in resourcing, coaching and L&D. Writing always had to take a back seat to the day job until June 2020 when I left the world of HR to become a full-time author. I'm so very grateful to anyone who has bought or borrowed my books in whatever format, helping me fulfil a long-held dream of writing full-time. I still can't believe I get to spend every day chatting to my fictional friends and making stuff up.
“‘I’m not ready for sleep yet.’ I tried for sultry. I think I managed slurred.”
“I think your gaydar may need some fine-tuning now that you’ve crossed the border. I think it’s still in Scottish frequency.”
“He swiftly removed his shirt, revealing a ripped stomach. A group of giggling girls wolf-whistled as they passed. Curtis licked his finger then rubbed one of his nipples with it in an extremely camp Austin Powers-style pose.”
“The minimum age was late-fifties and the dress code was beige.”
“And she also said that if I mess you about, she’ll never order from me again and she’ll rip my bollocks off and mount them in her next floral arrangement. So please don’t tell her I was late because I’m a little bit scared of her right now.”
“Right now, you’re about as much use as a one-legged cat trying to bury a turd on a frozen lake.”
My Review:
Getting over Gary teetered from light-hearted and witty, to serious and thoughtful. The subject matter could have been heavy and angsty, although I enjoyed the hits of levity as the story unraveled realistically with a multi-layered progression, while still managing to remain entertaining. The characters were quirky, interesting, and likable, and I enjoyed following them around. The premise was relevant and current while the plot took several unpredictable and surprising turns. I was occasionally frustrated with Elise yet, being a fellow procrastinator, I understood her all too well. This being the second book in the series, I am feeling the pull to go backward and read the first book and accompanying short stories as well, although this volume stood well on its own legs.
I am thoroughly enjoying the Whitsborough Bay Series by Jessica. First, let me say that you do not need to read this books in order (I didn't), but if you get the chance to read them that way, then I would recommend that. This is Elise's story and what a story it is. Elise married Gary, her highschool sweetheart while still in University. She has wanted to start a family for years, but it has not happened yet. When she begins pushing, she realizes something seems to be wrong, but is not sure what it is. Walking in on Gary and someone else is the nail in the coffin for their marriage, but what is Elise to do when ending a twelve year marriage. If you want to know more, then grab this book, put up your feet and enjoy.
I love the characters in this series. They have know each other for years and have wonderful, supportive friendships. Even the new characters fit in well and I love the interactions between them. Elise is in rebound mode and definitely makes some decisions that are not the best, but each decision gives her an adventure and something to think about. While reading this one, you will go through the gamut of emotions from sadness to anger to laughter and even happiness eventually. The dialogue in Jessica Redland's books often has me laughing. This was a well-written and plotted book with great characters, some angst, wonderful relationships and an uplifting ending. I definitely recommend you pick up this book and the rest of the series and read them sitting outside enjoying the world.
Another Jessica Redland, and another story filled with emotions. This had quite a few challenges for the main character Elise who really had to jump through the hoops for her HEA.
Elise had it all, family and friends. Then came reality. She discovered the truth about her husband, then had to deal with her broken dreams, a short lived affair, and a crush, and long stand-standing friendships. A secret was also on the way.
Ooh this book gripped me as much as a thriller would. I was in awe of Jessica's writing as she not only filled the book with emotions, she made her character grow a spine down the pages. Every chapter had Elise dealing with a new event in her life.
New friendships with Clare and Stevie developed, and I loved how the other characters too returned to be a support to Elise. For me the book worked as a standalone as the author provided enough backstory to anchor the characters.
Every book of this author is a treat to read. They not only soothe my soul, but they are fun and entertaining. This story too pulled at my heartstrings, and I was completely immersed in Elise's life. Strength and friendship was the backdrop of the book, and that made this a wonderful read.
Elise and Gary got together at 14 years old, in Elise’s eyes he is everything. They eventually get married and were both busy working towards their work goals and having achieved this and doing well Elise thinks it’s time to start a family, Gary keeps making excuses and it’s like she is invisible. He becomes more and more detached.
After returning home early after a night out Elise makes a discovery that she never saw coming and she knows there will be no going back to life as she knew it.
She thinks all her hopes and dreams are dashed and wonders how to even begin to start again, to add to it all her best friend Callie is getting married and her younger sister is not only getting married, she is also expecting twins.
Elise has the premise of a new love for her and inadvertently ends up choosing between more than one man and one of which unexpectedly grabs her heart….
DNF. I can't finish this but I'm rating it for the time I wasted on this insensitive and ill-informed effort to portray a marriage that fails because half of the couple is gay. But that's not really what this is. This is a story about a heroine whose selfishness has blinded her to the truth. You spent 16 years with a bloke and in all that time didn't clock the fact that he wasn't really that into you? Shame on you. On YOU. Not on him.
I have a gay sibling. I've had gay friends, acquaintances and coworkers throughout my life. Being gay is not a 'choice' or 'lifestyle.' It is part of a person's identity from birth. Sadly, we are only now getting to the point where that truth is accepted, but we have a lot farther to go. And I've seen firsthand what some in the gay community endure or have endured when it comes to their sexuality, their families acceptance of it, their own acceptance of it, and the stigma that still stubbornly clings to homosexuality. The list goes on but I think that's sufficient. How it relates to this story, simply put, is that the writer is coming from a place of ignorance and in my mind, some veiled bigotry.
Was the husband right in how he handled his sexuality - ignoring it until it couldn't be denied any longer? Hell no. But with his background and the aforementioned stigma attached to homosexuality, not to mention he was a GP and folks can be weird about their doc being gay, the guy was in a spot. Add in the fact that he married his best friend to try to 'force' himself straight and intended to see it through and I'm sorry, my sympathies lie with him and that's a fact. In this case, it's a fact because Elise is a selfish, childish, spiteful COW. All she did was bang on about babies, babies, babies - she had to have FOUR of them - and what SHE wanted and how pissed off she was that HE no longer seemed to want the same things.
But oh, when she found out he was gay I could have cheerfully punched her right in the gob. Repeatedly. I hated her, like literally wanted her to be mauled by a pack of starving lions. I had not one ounce of sympathy for her. Yeah, her hubs fucked up. But he was 16 when he made that choice and he tried to honour it for almost 15 years. If Elise felt like she put her whole identity into him throughout their relationship then that's on HER. Perhaps she should have asked herself WHY she felt she needed to do that.
This book was a fucked up mess. The attitude towards a gay man's struggle with his actual identity was handled in a callous and rather judgy fashion and my advise to the writer is this - don't use a man's sexuality to paint him as the villain in a story, because you know nothing about what people like him go through. He was made out to be a scumbag because he was gay and that's not forgivable, and that kind of shite doesn't belong in a romance.

Wow, this was not your typical relationship to have to get over. High school sweethearts and then twelve years of marriage. That's a long time. And he's the one and only guy you've ever, ever dated?
Then the first guy you decide to date will do anything with two breasts?
This poor girl is not having a good life. Her best friend is getting married, her sister is getting married and is pregnant with twins and her arch nemesis is always around whenever she goes into meltdown mode. Oh, this poor girl. She was almost teetering to that "woe is me" path where I was going to have to say "goodbye Felicia". However, she kept taking a fork away from there and remembering she wasn't the only human on the planet. So I kept hanging with her and I'm glad I did.
It ended up being quite an entertaining, fun and enjoyable read. There were quite a few laugh out moments and I even shed a few tears. AND, there were a couple of fist pumps in the air!! Right on, girl! I enjoyed this one much better than Searching for Steven which can only mean, Jessica Redland is getting better. I look forward to her next book.
Huge thanks to So Vain Books for approving my request and to Net Galley for providing me with a free e- galley in exchange for an honest review. I definitely recommend "this girl's not going to take it anymore" read!
With many thanks to So Vain books for providing this book in exchange for an honest review. I really enjoyed. It’s the second book in the Whitsborough Bay series, and I read and enjoyed Searching for Steven. There is a cross over of characters. The main character in this one , Elise, is the best friend of the girl in the first book. Elise is having a really tough time after discovering her husband has been having an affair. Even so there are some very humourous incidents and it is an enjoyable read. She tries dates with different men- will they help her ‘get over Gary’? It felt a bit like catching up with friends going through a troubled time and sharing stories and looking forward!
This is such a cute romance with some side drama and lies. It was so fun to read and the relationships, how they develop is their own ways are amazing and when you look back on the story everything connects and you can see how far she's come so think ending it the way it did was the right way to go.
Many people I wanted to hit so badly as they just weren't everything at all (when I say everyone I mean like 3 but they take up most the story so I feel like its everyone) but I'm really happy with this book and can see myself re-reading this again soon.
I loved this, it was such a lovely read, lovely and heartwarming, the kind of book to cuddle into and know you will leave happier than when you went in. It’s emotional, full of twists and turns, but it is gripping and addictive. A great read.

Having really enjoyed Searching for Steven, I was very curious to see what Jessica Redland's new book would be like. Imagine my delight when I see that it centres around Elise, who is Sarah's best friend, and as a result we get to see more of Sarah who I really liked in the first book, and more of various characters that I already knew.
Before I go any further, although this is a sequel, or continuation of a series, it can easily be read as a standalone, as the focus of main character is completely different. As mentioned though there are recurring characters, and I really do hope we will get to know even more of the lovely characters in Whitsborough Bay in the future).
Elise gets the surprise of her life when she arrives home early and catches her husband up to no good. Not only is he up to no good, but he has been living a lie for his whole life. Obviously the marriage is pretty much over at this point, and its up to Elise to get over her soon to be ex husband Gary.
Elise doesn't just have her heartbreak to contend with, her sister announces she is pregnant (something that Elise wishes she was), and her best friend is getting married, and Elise is to be bridesmaid, along with Sarah's other friend who Elise doesn't really get along with.
And then there are the potential men who could be the ones to help Elise get over Gary for good. They include brothers Michael and Daniel, who couldn't be more different, as well as friend Stevie. Since this is fiction, and of course it wouldn't be anywhere near as interesting a story with just all that going on, there are then some hidden unforeseen complications too, just to really mess with Elise's head.
I loved the sense of humour in the writing, and the complicated situation Elise manoevered herself into. At one point you need to try and keep up with who knows what and why , about a secret.
I'm becoming a real fan of Jessica Redland's Whitsborough Bay series, and can't wait for the next installment. If you like a good romantic comedy, that has some sticky situations and a bit of depth to it, then I would recommend you try this book.
Thanks to Netgalley and So Vain Books for this review copy. This was my honest opinion.
According to GoodReads, 1 star means I did not like it and that I have to say is accurate. I did not like this. In fact, I would probably go as far as saying I hated this and I only finished it for a reading challenge.
I think the issue with this is 100% me as this has a 4.5 rating (with over 1000 ratings). I just don't get it. I hated the lead character - I mean I found her inner dialogue so painful I was actually screaming at her in my head so many times to just shut up. She was conceited, naive, immature....I could go on for a while....I will just say I think she tops my no. #1 position for most hated characters I have ever had the misfortune to meet in a book. Yet, chicklit requires you to like the lead character. Nope. Never going to happen. Ever.
I hated her cheating husband. I hated her caricature mother. I hated her friends. I hated the stereotypical sleaze bag rebound boyfriend (yet another caricature), I hated his brother, I hated Stevie. I didn't like the dialogue. I hated the pacing. I didn't gel with the writing - yet this has a 4.5 rating so I think the issue is me.
I had bought 5+ other books in this series (and the spin-off) in a sale as I had high expectations of liking this series given the reviews - but I have shelved them all as "do not read". I am not a hate reader. I read with the expectation that I will love every book that crosses my path and when that is no longer the case - I part ways with the author. So unfortunately our journey ends here...
Reading Challenge Aussie Readers 2021 July Cover Challenge: Read a book with water on the cover.
When I met Elise in the first book of the series I thought she had the perfect marriage. Apparently not! For more than 16 years, her husband and best friend Gary has been keeping a very big secret from her.
The plot might be a bit unusual, but I do think it could be a possible scenario. Only the two mothers - Elise's as well as Gary's - seemed more like caricatures instead of realistic characters. In the second half of the book, Elise unfortunately got on my nerves a bit. With her being afraid hurting the feelings of her best friend or sister or anybody else. But mostly with her indecisiveness and interpreting everything the wrong way.
It was still a nice read and I liked that the title was in this case very fitting to the plot.
Great Book! This is a great book; this is the second book in the Whitsborough Bay series by Jessica Redland. Elise thought she had the perfect life and married to her childhood sweetheart Gary. That is until she found out that Gary was cheating on her. She has agreed to be a bridesmaid for her best friend and to make matters worse her nemesis is also a bridesmaid. If you are looking for a fun book then you need to read this book. I am looking to reading more books by this author.
It's not every day you arrive home to give your husband in the shower 🚿 with another man is it? Another fantastic little easy read, this one a little more of an emotional read as we follow Elise on her journey to finding love.

Loved this book. The main character went on a huge journey of discovary. This story was full of emotion. Off sick again today so reading this series is a great way of passing time.
Ehh it seems like a great book, writing was ok but after the h found her husband cheating and discovered his secret her inner monologue got boring for me. Dnf
I loved this book. Jessica is one of my favourite authors. I find her books so easy to read and I always look forward to them. Gorgeous setting and a lovely mix of characters.
Having read the first two books in the series, I was wondering about the relation between the title of the book and the upcoming story. But slowly and steadily it unfolded. And I can only say that it is perfect.! Also, I'm extremely happy that Elise has ended up with someone whom I like🤗
Because you know, in some stories, you wish few people were together and when it happens, you will be elated!
Hence, for this reason and many other unreasonable reasons, I declare that I loved the story!!
Trust me! 360+ pages in 3 week days is no easy thing for me, when I already have a full time job.!
But it happened just because of the story and the gripping narration!
And I'm excited for the next and last book in the series.! Ever since Clare's introduction happened in book2, I was eagerly waiting for her story to unveil!
And now the time has come. So ending my review here as I have other important things to do!
Another hit by Jessica Redland. I adored this book and revisiting the characters from New Beginnings at Seaside Blooms. Ok, so it was only a day inbetween since I finished the last book and started this one but still, it was a long enough wait!
Elise’s story is heartbreaking, draining, uplifting and joyous. A real roller coaster of emotions that I loved riding on. I am so glad that she went after what she wanted and became so much stronger through her tribulations and never gave up.
I am very much looking forward to reading Clare’s story next, she really is an enigma and then going back to the very first book in The Whitsborough Bay series that focuses on Callie!
Definitely a 5 star book and series so far for me!
3.75 ⭐ - This was so incredibly heartbreaking at first, but I think it ended up being my favorite so far. There were definitely some parts that were a bit painful to read because Elyse made some dumb decisions, but overall it was really lovely.
SPOILERS COMING:
I ABSOLUTELY loved that Elyse and Stevie ended up together. Their friendship and love was so freaking sweet and well-developed. Probably my favorite pairing so far from this series. And he wanted to help raise her baby?! 🥺😭 5⭐ for the cuteness of the two of them together.
I loved this, it was such a lovely read, lovely and heartwarming, the kind of book to cuddle into and know you will leave happier than when you went in. It’s emotional, full of twists and turns, but it is gripping and addictive. A great read.

Another great story. Jessica Redland’s characters feel like friends and I love the connections within the series. Enough drama and uncertainty to keep interest, but with the feel good ending I look for in books during these unpredictable times.
All I can write is after reading 5 of Ms. Redland’s novels back to back that I was so disappointed. In previous novels involving Sarah, Elsie and Clare, I was drawn in to each character and couldn’t wait to get to Elise’s story. Without spoilers I will try to explain. In previous books, Elise is happy, married young, a wonderful friend, a talented teacher. Often described as proper wear twin sweater sets with pearls. She always took care of Sarah’s requests and was a big force in her life.
So I began reading with hope Elise’s story, she was generous with her time and sage advice. Her breakup with her husband was definitely modern though unexpected for one who was educated and I tune to friends needs etc., her entire journey to find herself was way beyond the pale. She makes bad choices, she’s selfish wit her time, and feelings. She is self centered. Some characters seemed written in to perpetuate the poor choices Elise made.
I will read Clare’s story, and I hope that Ms. Redland is not trying to attract readers by spicing her books up and changing the characters she has so meticulous developed in previous books. If so I will not read it through,
I enjoyed this book for the most part. The characters were engaging and although I haven't read the earlier books in the series, this didn't stop me enjoying this book on its own. I particularly liked Curtis and Stevie for very different reasons. Stevie was a cuddly marshmallow and so adorable. Curtis was just hilarious. And the friendships between Elise, Callie, Claire and Sarah were complex and realistic rather than everyone is always happy. True friendship has more to it than that 👭🏼👭
I also found the storyline of cheating husband more interesting, not the usual scenario as found in romcoms so well played 👏
I did mark down a star because of the pregnancy trope. I have never been a fan of the accidental pregnancy trope and whilst this one didn't annoy me as much as usual, it was still there, muddying the waters 🤰
Elise is happily married and has been for 12 years to her best friend Gary. She's a primary school teacher and is looking forward to starting a family with him. However, he keeps putting her off and when, one day, she makes an awful discovery, she realises why. Thankfully her friends are there to support her on the big life change and the reader travels the path with Elise of the newly single woman. Everyday is a learning curve and faced with big decisions, she always puts other people's happiness before her own. When she finally starts standing up for herself, she finds that big things happen. This will make you smile but also experience some frustration where she is so nice and worries too much about other people and not herself.
Three days ago I finished book 2 of the series and said I was off to start the next one. I wasn't disappointed. it's lovely to see old friends and see how they are doing. That said this book is perfect on its own. It's definitely about Elise and it's beautiful. Her story is beautifully written and grabs you in hugs you, shakes you and then makes you cry and laugh. But definitely leaves you happier at the end. I love the way Jessica Redland writes and I'm definitely a fan. I've got book 4 now...
I have enjoyed this book as I have with all the books in the series but I do find myself getting confused over the various characters as there seem to have many . I have to remind myself about who each person is and what their back story is. And I have read the books quite close together so it wasn't that there was a lot of time between my reading each book and I had forgotten people because of the time gap - maybe there are too many characters of maybe have a cast list at the front of each book to tell readers who each person is?
