Grace Untamed is a 60 day devotional published by David Cook. There are quite a handful of contributors to this collection of grace-focused devotions. Contributors include: Elyse Fitzpatrick, Scotty Smith, Paul David Tripp, Steve Brown, Bryan Chappell, David Zahl, Ray Ortlund, Matt Chandler, and J.D. Greear. The devotional entries seemed to be grouped by alternating authors. Three or four days by the same author, then switch it up.

I had never thought about grace being so varied a subject until I spent time reading this devotional. Grace is more than what God shows us in salvation. So much more. This book highlights salvation by grace alone, but, it also focuses on daily grace, every day grace, in-every-relationship grace. Because God has shown grace to us as believers, we should show grace to others--our family, our friends, our neighbors, our coworkers and bosses.

Devotional books can be a commitment. Especially if you're mainly familiar with year-long devotional books. That is one reason I like to see lesser-commitment options: 30 days, 40 days, 60 days, 90 days, etc. I would recommend this devotional book. I found it to be theologically sound--at least so far as I can recall! The contributors were great, I thought. I was familiar with about half of them, and a few were new-to-me.

Favorite quotes:
Please don't insult the perfect work of Jesus by thinking that everything He did was merely some sort of example. His behavior was a great example, we could find no better role model than Jesus. But Jesus did not come to simply be our role model. He came to be our Savior. And to be our Savior, He became our righteousness. He became our merit. ~ Elyse Fitzpatrick

Sin is self-obsessed, self-focused. Sin inserts me in the center of my world--the one place I must never be. Sin makes me full of myself. Sin makes it all about me. Sin makes me a vat of selfish thoughts and desires and wants. ~ Paul David Tripp

Jesus welcome into His kingdom only the people who have defied Him and offended Him and sinned so badly that their own righteousness is gone for good. They've lost their innocence, and now they've come to Him with nothing but need. They don't admire themselves anymore. They mourn over themselves. But Jesus is happy with them, and He wants them to know He's happy with them. He's happy with you, to the praise of the glory of His grace. ~ Ray Ortlund

The reason grace is powerful for godliness is because their is chemistry of the heart that is greater than the math of the mind.

A compilation of short devotions from well known teachers and authors. I absolutely loved this. It describes the grace that grabs your heart while desiring more grace. That is real grace. It is not grace that encourages you to sin but to love God and others. It is not grace that waters down sin and shame but helps you to recognize that it is grace alone that saves, that grace is a refuge. These are the thoughts that came to me as I was reading. It is a kind of devotional that you will discover grace all over again. You can never get enough grace.

Here are some of the quotes that I found inspiring, encouraging, and satisfying.

It is difficult to feel any passion when you don't feel worthy to be loved or accepted by a Holy God.

Grace isn't just doctrine, it's a 24/7 context for living.

If you don't live in God's grace when you spill water, you won't live in God's grace when you get cancer.

There is a big difference between guilt and shame. Guilt would say this: I did something wrong. Shame says: Something is wrong with me. The voice of guilt: I need forgiveness.
The voice of shame: I need to be different. The voice of guilt: I failed. The voice of shame: I am a failure. The voice of guilt: I broke a rule. The voice of shame: I am a broken person. Guilt says, I made a mistake; shame says, I am a mistake. Guilt: I didn't do enough; shame: I am not enough.

The Bible says the gospel changes what we worship by revealing to us a God who is better and more glorious than our idols, so that we become people who do righteousness because we crave righteousness, who seek God because we love God.

This short devotional is one that should be kept on your shelf and read every year. It focuses on the Gospel and what Christ did and our need for it. With that said, I would encourage you to get this one. Let your heart saturate the goodness of the Lord and see that He is indeed good.

A Special Thank you to David C Cook and Netgalley for the ARC and the opportunity to post an honest review.

Elyse Fitzpatrick in her new book “Grace Untamed” published by David C. Cook gives us A 60-Day Devotional.

From the back cover: A liberating dose of daily grace

God’s grace liberates us. When we live under grace, we are free to risk and dream and love. But most of us still define our identity by what we do rather than who we are as sons and daughters of the King.

Containing 60 daily devotions written by some of the leading Christian voices of our day, Grace Untamed will challenge and equip you to live in the scandalous freedom of God’s grace. Prepare to drink deep from the wellspring of God’s untamed and unending grace.

I think we all need reminders about God’s grace, that is, “His generous favor bestowed on the undeserving through Christ”. This book is a collection of short devotionals about God’s grace. There are sixty devotionals that are there to just refocus our thoughts on the grace of God. Let’s face it we are under attack and the battle is draining. This book can help strengthen us in The Father when we feel drained and don’t want to go on. Every day there is a new thought about His grace in our lives. Then you close out the devotional with the “Thought To Remember For Today” that helps sink what we were just reading into our spirits. Then when the sixty days are finished we just go back to the first one and start all over again. It will never wear out. I also think if you have friends and family this book would make a terrific gift for them so that they could enjoy it as well.

“This book is about being trained by grace, a process accomplished through faith in the gracious truth that I am fully known yet deeply loved, warmly welcomed, completely forgiven, and eternally adopted through His work alone” (location 64).

This is a book I’m going to read over and over again. We need this book and the reminders of grace. Every devotional encouraged or convicted me in some way. I have highlights all over the book.

There are 60 devotionals by Elyse Fitzpatrick, Scotty Smith, Paul David Tripp, Steve Brown, Bryan Chappell, David Zahl, Ray Ortlund, Matt Chandler, and J.D. Greear. The devotionals come in chunks by author…i.e., four by Elyse Fitzpatrick, then three by Scotty Smith, four by Paul David Tripp, etc. I really liked this style because each author could take a central idea and expand on it over several devotionals without making the devotionals really long. For instance Paul David Tripp focuses on selfishness in one devotional and then the next one talks about the only way to conquer selfishness.

“If you don’t live in God’s grace when you spill water, you won’t live in God’s grace when you get cancer…Grace is a pool where elephants can swim and children can play. It has to do with reading a good book and going to a movie and falling on your knees in repentance and rejoicing in worship. Grace isn’t just a doctrine; it’s a 24/7 context for living” (location 1111). That’s what this book is about….understanding grace and making it more and more the way we live.

Thank you to Netgalley and David C. Cook publishing for providing me with a free copy of this book for the purpose of this review. I was not required to make it positive but I truly loved this book.

There are 60 devotionals by Elyse Fitzpatrick, Scotty Smith, Paul David Tripp, Steve Brown, Bryan Chappell, David Zahl, Ray Ortlund, Matt Chandler, and J.D. Greear. Each devotional is 1-2 pages long and very easy to quick to read, however, provide lots to reflect on so the words resonant through your day. I love everything Fitzpatrick and Tripp write and in most cases had previously read their entities. But that was okay as I love what they write. I was new to most of the other authors so it was a great introduction to their work. In particular, I look forward to reading more of Steve Brown's works.

Grace is so fundamental to a Christian's life and is often misunderstood, taken for granted or unappreciated. These devotionals provide clarity plus practical insights to the working of grace in our lives.

As the introductory blurb mentions we often define ourselves by what we do rather than who we are in Jesus. These devotionals help us better understand the wonder of grace and the incredible freedom it brings.

This is definitely a very good investment.

This is a nice, short devotional book on GRACE UNTAMED. The devotionals have been written by many well-loved authors and many readers will be interested in this book because of that fact. We all can never get enough of GRACE. The writers help us to be reminded in new ways to see the Grace that God has extended to us and challenges us to Untame that same Grace and extend it to everyone in our path.

Predictable. Was looking fresh insights. The Whole lets see how bad we can make so you need grace is just plain tired and frankly unhealthy.
Was disappointed.

So much encouragement

I love the honesty and transparency of the ones who wrote the devotions. There is so much hope in God in spite of all the flaws we have. It explains so well that God ‘s love is not dependent on our behavior! Very valuable insights by all who wrote.
