"Fog" is everything I want in a book. It's dark and beautiful, and the setting seems to participate as a character in the storyline to provide background and mood - the setting is both bleak and deeply unpredictable. I want to visit the area for reasons I cannot figure out exactly. The (other) characters are well developed to add background and depth to the plot without complicating the story. I truly had no idea how it was going to end the first time I read it, but I knew it would be darkly beautiful and unpredictable and emotionally and physically exhausting. This is one of my favorite books, and I revisit it every few years to see what new things I can uncover. This week was my third reading, and I do not think I am quite done with it yet.
