Brett Battles is a NEW YORK TIMES bestselling and Barry Award-winning author of forty novels, including the Jonathan Quinn series and its Excoms spinoff, the Project Eden series, and the time bending Rewinder series. He’s also the coauthor, with Robert Gregory Browne, of the Alexandra Poe series. Although I usually enjoy Jonathan Quinn books, I found this one to be, at best, okay.
The story was decent except for the feats of Quinn's 13-year-old stepson which were incredible, so much so as to stretch credibility well beyond its breaking point.
If you love Quinn stories, you might want to read this but, if not, I would steer clear. If you're looking for a solid action-packed, international semi-superman type of book, you might try a book earlier in the series.
A run of the mill story not 4 stars, but good enough to be 3 stars. Believable? Of course not, it's a story but Brett Battles could have given us a little something "more" believable. If you're a fan, read it, if not skip this book.
This is a different type of thriller, as Quinn is a cleaner, which means he clears the scene after a target has been eliminated. I've been read this series since the beginning and this is really a series that gets stronger with each book. Better character development, tightly written descriptive scenes. I would recommend starting with the The Cleaner which is the first book in the series and work from there.
From the publisher: Even those who make bodies disappear for a living need a vacation! To Quinn and Orlando, the offer of a private villa on a quiet island beach sounds like heaven, and they jump at the chance for some family time with their six-month-old daughter and Orland’s teenage son. At first it seems as though their holiday will be even better than they’d hoped. The water is warm, the house is beautiful, and the view is spectacular. But when revenge is in the air, things have a way of going sideways.
The tenth and newest entry in the Jonathan Quinn series brings back many of the usual cast of characters: Nate, Quinn’s mentee and his sister Liz’ boyfriend, and now an elite cleaner himself (the job entailing discreetly cleaning up crime scenes and the occasional body after the always possible bloodshed); their colleague, Daeng; and of course Orlando, the love of Quinn’s life, an Asian woman, a brilliant computer hacker; and Helen Cho, described as “head of a growing network of government [and quasi-government] security and intelligence agencies” and now a client of Quinn and his team. Garrett himself, now a mature teenager, plays a large role in the tale. [At one point he thinks “None of the other kids had a spy for a mother.] Even his baby sister, Claire, plays a visible role. Among “the bad guys” are Pravat [who considers himself ”a watcher,” not a gunman] and a couple of his associates, here called “One” and “Two.” Richard Maddox, who does not make his living as a criminal, but is the head of a non-governmental organization whose sole aim was to prevent the human trafficking of girls and young women. As usual in this series, the action moves among Barcelona to Bangkok,Cambodia, Koh Samui (Thailand), and Jakarta.
Just as I wasn’t originally familiar with the description of Quinn and Nate as “cleaners,” here we are introduced to characters referred to variously as “the assassin” and “the hunters,” which would seem self-explanatory. All are very well trained and good at what they do (one of them considers himself “the number one hunter in the world”), leaving several bodies in their wake. Among the characters presented here are Mee Noi, “brutal henchman of the former criminal boss Chayan.” The suspense, at which the author is a master, builds consistently, and he wraps everything up very satisfactorily.
The cleaner is not much of a cleaner any more. Most of the stories now are personal but very good. You have to read the books in order other wise you will get confused. I like the fact that he has gotten more friends who are in the stories on a more permanent basis. I am still behind on these but getting there. Now he also has a new series with Nate as a main character. I surely will read those as well. Great stuff.
This is the tenth full-length novel in the Jonathan Quinn series. I’ve been a fan since book one and in my opinion Quinn is one of the most original ongoing characters in contemporary thriller fiction. Quinn is a “cleaner” – the person who comes in after a target has been eliminated, sanitizes the scene, and makes the body disappear.
The books usually center on something unexpected at the scene that draws Quinn and his colleagues into something far more sinister than they anticipated. The plots typically have international intrigue, national security threats, espionage and more than a few paid assassins.
The most recent titles in the series have added another element – focusing not only on Quinn’s work as a “cleaner” but also on the consequences his career path has had on his personal life.
Quinn and Orlando have a baby daughter now to go along with Orlando’s teenage son. Nate – Quinn’s one-time protégé, and now partner – is also dating Quinn’s sister.
In THE UNLEASHED, both Quinn and Nate are looking forward to a much-needed vacation. Quinn, Orlando and the kids are in Thailand. Nate and Quinn’s sister are in Europe.
But a prison break in Cambodia has unleashed a wave of revenge killings across Southeast Asia – and Quinn, Orlando and the kids end up in its path.
In Europe, a mysterious girl is targeted for assassination – and only Nate can save her.
Like every other book in this series, the plot is fast-paced and filled with explosive action and exotic locales. I read it straight through in one afternoon because it’s that hard to put down.
One thing I’m not sure about – it could be readers who are new to the series will not find it as compelling as long-time readers and fans of Brett Battles. That’s because the “cleaner” aspect of the series isn’t really part of this plot, and that’s the one thing I always felt really elevated it above so many others in this genre.
It’s not a problem for long-time fans of the series because they’ll be invested in what happens to the characters – but if you’re new to Jonathan Quinn, then after you’ve finished THE UNLEASHED I highly recommend you go back and read THE CLEANER. You’ll likely get hooked on the entire series.
If you're a fan of this series, don't miss this installment. Fast pacing, twists and turns, parallel story lines and a flair for suspense made this book a huge winner. I love this series and always wait impatiently for the next installment. The ending here set up the next story line and as shocking as it was, the next book promises to be even better than this one which is going to be hard to beat . thank you Brett Battles for a great series.
I can't believe what Brett Battles did at the end if this one! I've spent the last few months reading the entire Quinn series, and now I'm all caught up. If The Aggrieved was released already, I'd probably spend the day reading what happens next. Grrrrrr!!! Arggh!!!
A nice use of all the secondary characters in the series. An interesting premise that holds up well through out the whole story. Some unexpected plot twists along the way. Once and awhile the story becomes bogged down in the details but overall the book is well worth reading.
Quinn and Nate return in Brett Battles tenth book in the Jonathan Quinn thriller series.
Drug kingpin Chayan and lieutenant Mee Noi bribe their way out of a Cambodian prison, finding his business in total chaos while he’d been in prison Chayan’s intention had always been to deal with those responsible for his imprisonment, but business is business that that comes first. One of Chayan’s most trusted lieutenants has taken advantage of his imprisonment and branched out on his own, but his time for retribution has finally come.
Chayan then turns his attention to the three people responsible for his imprisonment, dealing with the first two he then goes after the third person.
Quinn and Orlando are on holiday with their six-month old daughter and Orlando’s teenage son Garrett on a private villa on a quit beach, with Daeng in the beach house next door. Unknown to them Chayan has the villa under surveillance, as the family lounge around on the beach, Chayan’s people are watching them. Thinking they’re just friends of Daeng, underestimating them when they try to kill Quinn and his family as a warning to Daeng after he helped put Chayan in prison. Quinn and Orlando fight back killing three of them and capturing a fourth. Chayan’s men flee but not without abducting Garrett and Claire.
Meanwhile Nate is on the run in Spain after the handover of a woman goes bad, alone without backup with his girlfriend Quinn’s sister and the woman, Spanish police have a photo of him, changing his appearance he manages to evade the police long enough to leave Spain on a private jet.
Through a contact of Daeng, Quinn learns the children have been flown to Bangkok, calling in a favour he, Orlando and Daeng fly out to Bangkok, on route he gets Nate to change course to help with the retrieval of the children, forcing Nate to bring Lisa and the woman with him. Unknown to them someone else is tracking Nate’s plane.
After finding Mee Noi and finding out Bangkok was a lure for Chayan to get away, after killing him and hacking his phone, Chayan and the kids are in Jakarta, Quinn gets Nate to divert there.
Garrett manages to escape with Claire but is trapped in an apartment building surrounded by Chayan’s men. Nate leaves Liz and the woman and goes to help rescue Garrett and Claire. The high of rescuing the kids turns into the lowest of lows when returning to find Liz, Quinn's and Nate's world is turned upside down.
It's vacation time for Jonathan Quinn, his wife, Orlando, and their two kids, Garrett and Claire. At six months old, Claire doesn’t care where she is as long as her parents are nearby. It’s a Thai beach. The House is perfect and so is the water.
Quinn’s partner, Nate, is in Europe as this begins doing a working vacation. With him is his girlfriend, Liz, who is also Quinn’s sister. Nate draws an assignment from one of his clients to pick up a package, who turns out to be a woman, and deliver her to a specific place. That goes sour, and Nate must keep the woman with him and Liz as they outrun the people who want her dead.
In Thailand, a prison break in Cambodia earlier resulted in a revenge tour of some evil men who want to kill Quinn’s friend and fellow operative. These shadowy revenge seekers kidnap Garrett and Claire, and much of the rest of the book details Garrett’s escape from those who would kill him.
This is excellent entertainment that flies by quickly. I felt cheated by the ending, and it horrified me. I hope vengeance is high on the list of plotlines in the next book in the series.
Two vacations go sideways in The Unleashed. Nate is in Europe, visiting Liz, when he's asked by Helen to watch a man. When the man is killed, Helen asks Nate to take his place in moving a package. But when things go from bad to worse, Nate has to take Liz and the package on the run.
Meanwhile, Quinn and family take Daeng up on an offer to vacation in Thailand. Daeng has access to a friend's spectacular home on the beach. Things are going well until a man from Daeng's past comes for revenge.
The Unleashed is an excellent entry in this series. Lots of action on all sides as unexpected bad guys chase after our favorite cleaners. Most of the tension comes from the cat and mouse stalking that the reader sees but the characters are unaware of. This isn't a slugfest. These characters are smart and careful.
My only quibble with this story is the lack of emotional punch from two scenes near the end of the book. Otherwise, this is a mostly family friendly read (rare for this genre) that will provide a few hours of excellent entertainment.
Heads up - If you start this book, you might as well go ahead and buy book #11 because the ending of this book is in book #11.
As typical of this series, there are big gaps in the details of how things happen along with some holes in logic, but there is a lot of action. There isn't a cleaner operation in this book, however. The main characters are supposed to be on vacation with Daeng, Quinn, and family in Thailand and Nate & Liz in Barcelona.
Things go awry for Daeng and Quinn's family when Chayan escapes from a Thai prison and wants revenge on the people who put him there. In Barcelona, Nate gets roped into being a watcher for Helen Cho when things go sideways for him. Eventually the two stories come together causing much heartache for the main characters.
Battles' books are quick and fun to read if you are not looking for depth in a story. This book was enjoyable for me, and I would recommend it if you like this genre and other books in this series.
This is one of my favorite series. However, this particular installment was a little below the standard of others. In it Quinn and Orlando are vacationing at an island in the far east with their two children that was arranged by their friend and fellow operative, Daing. Little did they know that Daing was being targeted for revenge by a local crime boss and that hey would get caught up in the blowback. Without getting into too many details, suffice to say that the two children get kidnapped and Quinn, Olrando and Daing must get them back. Their other friend and fellow operative, Nate and Quinn's sister, Liz are also caught up in the blowback on another side story. Ultimately all is made well, but not before a tense mission is pulled off involving quite a few different venues and operations, as in all of the Quinn series.
I borrowed book one in the Jonathan Quinn series expecting nothing special, but boy was I surprised. From start to finish each book has drawn me in and made me feel like one of Quinn's team. As I have finished one I have started the next, I found them all gripping, believable and the endings not as expected, there's always an unforeseen twist. Brett Battles has created an unputdownable series of books starring a close knit group of people you know will do the right thing in difficult circumstances. Some of the storylines appear prophetic of current situations both in the USA and the world. I cannot recommend these books highly enough.
Another great book about Jonathan Quinn, but it had a really sad ending. I certainly didn’t see that coming.
It was exciting, however. Quinn and Orlando’s children were kidnapped so you can pretty much imagine how that went over. AND the kids were taken to other countries, too. It was quite a chase.
No romance and the F-bomb was used 2 times. That’s a big difference from the first book, The Cleaner. I think the F-bomb was used something like 45 times. And now, two times? That’s disappointing. You just can’t have a book full of really, really bad guys and not have them ALL have potty mouths. IMO
So far every book in the series has been top notch. This one fell short for me though.
As always, the action is great but I didn’t understand why Orlando wasn’t developed as she could have been given the plot. As a mom, it didn’t quite settle with me. I think that her role could have done much more in the story.
Lastly, the end just sort of fell flat for me. It was a shock, yes but it was almost as if it was hurried.
Without a doubt, looking forward to the next book though!
A Brilliant Gripping Read. This was the first book that I have read by Brett Battles and just loved it! This book is from Jonathan Quinn books series and is just full of twists and turns and you can’t but help being drawn into the storyline and feeling as if you were part of the team. The book also has a gripping and sad ending which obviously leads you into the next book which I will be getting as I can’t leave it as it is; a must follow up. Well written and another of those books you just can’t put down
I waited to write my review on all the books. I have read the first book to the last book. I can say that Mr. Battles has done a wonderful job. Quinn and Nate are an amazing team. I couldn't stop reading one book without reading the next book. If you enjoy reading, like I do. You will not be disappointed with Jonathan Quinn, he brings the story to life. Start with the first book of Jonathan Quinn and then from there Book 1.
Even those who make bodies disappear for a living need a vacation. To Quinn and Orlando, the offer of a private villa on a quiet island beach sounds like heaven, and they jump at the chance for some family time with their six-month old daughter and Orlando's teenage son.
At first it seems as though their holiday will be even better than they’d hoped. The water is warm, the house is beautiful, and the view is spectacular.
But when revenge is in the air, things have a way of going sideway
Another great book in this series. Love it! (audible review)
Some things don't always work out....... Sigh.... The stories Brett Battles writes for Quinn, Orlando, Nate and Daeng are fantastic!
This is such a great series. I am getting closer to catching up with the series. (that's gonna be a bummer) I love binge listening to a series when I find a good one.
I love Scott Brick's narrations! He is fantastic and does a superb job on all the voices and he reading voice is great!
Another run, drive, fly and chase novel. Nothing like getting on a Gulfstream private jet and chasing down criminals whenever you feel like! Doing all of this with a 6 month in tow adds a bit more of a challenge. Sad to see Quinn’s sister/ Nate’s girlfriend taken out. Just when it seemed like he was getting a personality, what will happen to him now? There’s enough jumping around that you have to stop and sort out who’s going where with whom and why. A pretty good read.
This is a great page-turner! Brett Battles has come a long way from his first Quinn novel and he continues to up his game. If a fast-paced thriller is the kind of read you enjoy, you will want to add him to your list. I also recommend "Becoming Quinn," the Jonathan Quinn origin story - this book brings depth to the character and makes him more compelling.
This series follows a group of highly skilled operatives with entirely human faults. The stories are fast paced and well constructed, and end before I'm ready.
there were times when I had to literally walk away because the tension was more than I could take in the moment. This series seems to just keep getting better.
