Joaquim Maria Machado de Assis, often known as Machado de Assis, Machado, or Bruxo do Cosme Velho, (June 21, 1839, Rio de Janeiro—September 29, 1908, Rio de Janeiro) was a Brazilian novelist, poet, playwright and short story writer. He is widely regarded as the most important writer of Brazilian literature. However, he did not gain widespread popularity outside Brazil in his own lifetime.
Machado's works had a great influence on Brazilian literary schools of the late 19th century and 20th century. José Saramago, Carlos Fuentes, Susan Sontag and Harold Bloom are among his admirers and Bloom calls him "the supreme black literary artist to date."

Attempted Midnight Seduction?
A review of the Fario Kindle eBook (October 19, 2012) translated by Juan LePuen from the Portuguese (Brazilian) language original short story Missa do Galo (1894) first collected in Páginas Recolhidas (Collected Pages) (1899).

Missa da Galo (Portuguese: Midnight Mass aka The Rooster's Mass) is a revered story in Brazilian literature and is often cited as the popular favourite of all of Machado de Assis' short stories. It is so revered that in Missa do Galo - Variações Sobre o Mesmo Tema (Midnight Mass - Variations on the Same Theme) (1977), later 20th century Brazilian authors wrote 6 different versions of it in a tribute.

Rural 17-year-old Nogueira is boarding with the family of a distant relative while going to school in Rio de Janeiro. The man of the house cheats on his wife by using the euphemism of weekly excursions to the "theatre." Nogueira is planning to go to the Christmas Eve midnight mass with a neighbour and in order to keep himself awake is reading Dumas' The Three Musketeers (1844). 30-year-old Conceição, the wife in the household, joins him and makes conversation. Nogueira, while observing Conceição's bare arms and negligee, is seemingly oblivious to what might be going on. He is writing the story many years later and still propounds that he doesn't understand what happened.

I can see why the story is so admired. You can make several different scenarios about it. Is Nogueira really a reliable narrator? Is he writing a purposely naïve version in order to portray his youthful innocence? Is he actually this naïve even as an adult? Or did something entirely different take place and this is now the cover story? The Rooster of the title can signal a symbolic meaning. The reader can imagine all sorts of other reasons and events from the version as stated.

This is part of my continuing investigation into the short stories of Machado de Assis. Previously i had read Holidays (1906) and O Caso da Vara (1891).

Machado de Assis (1839-1908) is considered to be one of Brazil's great writers and his often-used metafiction style was ahead of its time. His most popular novels are Dom Casmurro (1899) and The Posthumous Memoirs of Bras Cubas (1881).

One of the tings I love about art is how it can inspire others. In 1889 Brazilian author Machado de Assis wrote “Missa do Galo,” a story of a “temptation” between a young man and an older married woman. Almost 100 years later fellow Brazilian author Osman Lins asked several authors to do variations on the theme of “Missa do Galo.”

Central to the theme are the three main characters: the student 17-year old Nogueira, his older married relative Menezes, and 30-year old Conceição, wife of Menezes. Also living in the house is Dona Inácia, the mother in law. These stories were republished in 2008 in a book commemorating the 100th anniversary of the death of Machado (1839-1908). The other themes are literature and art. In the original story, the student is reading a copy of The Three Musketeers while Conceição makes a comment about a painting she detests. Otherwise the field is wide open.

I haven’t located that 2008 book but I came across a Brazilian web site that carried five of the six stories, plus a short movie made of the original story by Machado. The link is at the end of my review.

Antonio Callado
Conceição’s mother Inácia was caught daydreaming when the young student arrived before Midnight Mass. She was remembering her late husband Viega who worked in a jewelry shop when Menzenes came shopping for a diamond pendant for his first wife. When she died, Menzenes came courting Conceição but he was no Lord Byron. Having little dowry for her daughter, Inácia went to see a fortune teller to arrange a better deal for marriage to Menezes.

Here is a modern spin on this tale, in so far as “mother knits while listening to the radio” and they listened to classical records on the Vitrola (early 20th c). Menezes works hard and gives his wife everything she needs to be “happy.” But is she? Not until the young man arrives who is waiting for old man Menezes to die.

Lygia Fagundes Telles
This story is told from the point of view of Conceição. Her husband is a cheat and she is lonely. Showing up in her skimpy nightgown and the heat of the Brazilian summer spices up the story. She is very sultry and wants to get back at her husband. The young man is not quite what she expects and that midnight mass still beckons.

Nélida Piñon
This time the point of view is again from mother Dona Inácia. She observes what her son in law is up to and worried about her daughter. However when young Nogueira arrives and she hears that he is reading, a sigh of relief fills her. Will he fill the void?

Osman Lins
Like the original story being told by Nogueira, it is set in modern time (the 70s). Menezes works like clockwork: wakes at 7:30, breakfasts with his mother and wife, goes to work, lunches with them, back to work and returns for dinner with them. He is predictable. Conceição goes shopping and sees movies. So when Nogueira pays them a visit over the holidays, things are thrown off.

Conceição and Nogueira are left alone while Menezes disappears. She notices him reading a book, there is some chitchat as the young man notices the sultry wife, focusing on her sandals (and bare legs). Can he make the move before the friends show up? Or is he too young to know what to do?

A influência naturalista é bem presente nesse conto, e percebemos isso na descrição focada no psicológico das personagens, na análise psicológica. Eu adoro a forma como Machado de Assis nos retrata, a partir de Missa do Galo, a subjetividade e o desejo não-explícito, nos mostrando que onde aparentemente nada está acontecendo, tudo pode estar acontecendo de forma sutil e implícita. É o primeiro conto de Machado de Assis que leio, e definitivamente lerei outros.

A neglected, lonely and horny wife. A young, innocent, 17-year-old man. Mating signals from the former which the latter astoundingly failed to interpret correctly.

Li este conto porque descobri, ao ler a análise de obras para o vestibular, que um dos contos do livro Os Melhores Contos de Lygia Fagundes Telles é baseado nele, então eu queria ter um entendimento melhor do trabalho de "releitura" que ela fez.

She was what people call “a nice person.” She never spoke ill of anyone and was very forgiving. She wouldn’t have known how to hate anyone, nor, perhaps, how to love them.

I've allowed Assis to take me out for a second date. I think he's trying to become intimate, but his signals are mutable and ambiguous.

Meu primeiro contato com o Machado e eu me diverti muito. Me recordo de já ter lido esse conto, pelas palavras de Lygia e agora pelas palavras de seu criador.

É um conto simples, cativante e delicado. Tem uma atmosfera quente e meio morosa das noites de natal que se passa sozinho. Nogueira é um personagem um tanto apático.

Quem brilha mesmo é Conceição, que começa tão singela de tudo, de feições e de emoções e que se aviva a cada parágrafo, na frente dos olhos de Nogueira. Esse jogo de sedução entre a Conceição e o Nogueira foi bem curioso e tão rápido como começa, tão sem sentido, finda.

Um ótimo primeiro contato com Machado.

After reading Les Lauriers sont Coupée by Frenchman Édouard Dujardin (1887), my Portuguese friend Celeste pointed me to a short story by the Brazilian author Machado de Assis (1889), published only two years later. The similarities are very close.

A student Nogueira is staying at the house of the notary Meneses for the holidays. While waiting for Midnight Mass (Misso de Galo), his wife Conceição notices the student reading a book. It’s “The Three Musketeers” by Alexandre Dumas. She asks if it is a good book and a conversation begins. Very quickly the student becomes infatuated with the woman. She is thirty; the young man seventeen.

The conversation is light but quickly we realize that Conceição has differing thoughts about her husband. His first wife died and so this is his second marriage. His choice in art is not what she likes. She wants images of the saints; he likes sultry women like Cleopatra. She doesn’t seem happy about his night out once a week. We see where this is going but then the call for Mass.

There is certainly no shortages of stories of younger men being attracted to older women. In both cases nothing much happens past the infatuation stage. The women know better despite whatever temptation is thrown at them or at best, that temptation only exists in the minds of those young men.

This short story is found in a collection called “Páginas Recolhidas.” Time to look for it as I do enjoy Machado de Assis.

Incrível obra da literatura brasileira, mesmo sendo apenas um breve conto o peso que ela carrega é gigante.
a maneira como machado com apenas 1 ponto de vista consegue nos tocar e mexer com nossa cabeça.
Muito bem pensado cada ação, palavra, movimento, pensamento que devemos acabar sempre visualizando de uma maneira bastante crítica para que no final consigamos elaborar uma resposta a uma questão que desde o início ele já nos dá : foi ou não foi sedução ? aconteceu alguma coisa que nosso narrador está escondendo de nós ? a final isso tudo mesmo aconteceu ou é apenas delírio de nosso narrador ?.

Nogueira, um estudante no RJ, está hospedado na casa de Menezes e Conceição. O marido toda semana vai ao teatro—ou ao menos é isto que todos fingem acreditar, mesmo sabendo que o teatro é o quarto de sua amante. Na noite de véspera de Natal, Nogueira decide permanecer acordado para assistir à Missa do Galo. Enquanto lia Dumas, Conceição aparece e um diálogo se inicia. O conto descreve como um diálogo pode ser apenas um diálogo casual ou um gatilho, tanto para Nogueira que sente uma estranha atração, quanto para Conceição que não sabemos o que sente. O diálogo parece ter revalado algo à Conceição, não sobre Nogueira mas sobre si mesma. Anos depois apareceria casada novamente.

On the surface, this is a simple slice of life in which a young student is talking to the wife of the man he lodges with while waiting for midnight mass. Beneath that is a building up of unspoken desire and felt frustration. It’s such a wonderful short story of perceptions, representations and misrepresentations. Thanks to GRs’ Alan Teder for pointing me towards this writer and to whoever directed Alan to him. I’m slowly working my way through the author’s ‘Midnight Mass and Other Stories’, which has a 2.33 rating on GRs, but even after just three stories looks closer to 5 stars in my opinion. More to come.

Terminado em Petrópolis.

Eu demorei muito para terminar/continuar este livro e foi difícil engajar na leitura depois de tanto tempo parado. Mas aí reler o conto original, consegui me lembrar de detalhes presentes em várias versões que eu deixei passar.

Apesar do vocabulário antigo, é um ótimo exercício tanto para os leitores, como deve ter sido para os autores.

I love how Machado will write about characters that will manipulate the narrative. An unreliable narrator is so true to reality, specially when you know what this tale is about), it will always make a story better. Whiteout using a single verb of explicit nature he creates sexual tension way better than 50 shades could ever dare to attempt.

É compreensível (por N motivos) que jovens estudantes deixem de lado o Machado (pelo menos, por um tempo). Mas, leitores com um mínimo de bagagem, não.

Minhas primeiras impressões deste conto, para ficar registrada, é a de um escritor com um primoroso domínio do conto. E, além de toda a construção (estilística, imersiva, sedutora — que une forma e conteúdo em uma sedução que é dupla), há, em onze páginas, uma amplitude interpretativa, pelo ponto de vista, pela eterna ironia do Machado, que rivaliza, de certa forma, mesmo as obras mais "modernas e experimentais", entre muitas aspas.

Essa semana mesmo, por exemplo, reli O Jardim dos Caminhos que se Bifurcam, do Borges. E a amplitude e desprendimento de uma narrativa que se abre para múltiplos tempos, em múltiplas veredas, terminando em um labirinto que é, na verdade, um livro; consigo ver um germe dessas amplas possibilidades na escrita do Machado. Seja em Conceição e Nogueira ou em Bentinho e Capitu.

Mesmo que você faça uma leitura inflexível, com apoio unicamente no texto, e clame que chegou a uma conclusão, sentirá o alicerce rangendo sob seus pés. Você só tomou certas direções, pessoais (e não menos importantes, é claro), mas que fazem parte de infinitas veredas. Eu também tomei o meu caminho, e o próximo leitor trilhará o seu.

Deixando a divagação de lado, comparando bem vulgarmente, ambas narrativas, a do Machado é melhor (apesar de eu entender que na do Borges, há um rompimento que é difícil de pôr até em palavras. É um conto que não pode ser analisado como um conto comum; mesmo que assim o possa ser lido). No do Machado, vale guardar essa sensação, senti até um clima meio onírico, de madrugada vagarosa, que não os distancia tanto. "Realismo" é mesmo só convenção.

Tinha uma outra comparação para fazer, com "O Velho Adão" do D.H Lawrence, também. Um conto em certos aspectos lembra muito o do Machado, e é de se estranhar (e atentar) como ambos os autores trabalharam diferentemente, cada qual carregando bagagens próprias, uma situação muitíssimo parecida: uma infidelidade e sedução que é incitada e nunca consumada.

Fica como recomendação o conto do Lawrence: O cenário chuvoso, cada qual lendo seu livro, a mulher esperando o marido que chegará fedorento de cerveja, o inquilino que a acompanha, a tensão e as suscitações sexuais entre ambos… E no fim, uma violenta ação, tudo me foi bem memorável mas… ainda prefiro o do Machado.

E deixo isso para lá, por agora. Volto daqui a um tempo para organizar e desenvolver isso aqui. Com mais foco na construção e narrativa do conto, e menos divagação sem sentido.

Era... era para ser só uma primeira impressão.

Uma ideia muito boa: reescrever o conto Missa do Galo, de Machado de Assis, sob novas perspectivas.
Esta tarefa é idealizada por Osman Lins e compartilhada com a amiga Julieta de Godoy Ladeira. Então, são convidados para a tarefa ninguém menos que Lygia Fagundes Telles, Nélida Piñon, Autran Dourado e Antonio Callado. Alguns textos apócrifos e algumas fanfictions são muito interessantes e divertidos, mas interessar um leitor com um texto comparando-o ao original de MA é até injusto. O conto original me parece insuperável. Mesmo sabendo que a intenção era a homenagem, não a superação, fiquei um pouco frustrada com a leitura. Alguns contos são muito lentos e não traduzem a sensação do ambiente e suspense entre o jovem Nogueira e a misteriosa Conceição, tão intensos.
