From the womb, she was owned. Shula Kelley was signed away before her first breath, just like everyone else in secessionist Texas. She was called beautiful like it meant something important. Like it would get her a kind husband, or one less cruel. She hoped Jared Agnesson was kind.
And the devil you know is still the devil.
As punishment for his son's rebellion, the patriarch of the Agnesson clan claimed Shula for his own. And she saw only one way out. Shula had a plan, but she didn't realize it would require a savior.
Suffer not the sins of the father.
First acts of rebellion open doors that are best left closed. Until Jared walked through it. Her savior. But how can she truly love when she only knows obedience?
Arden Aoide lives in San Antonio, Texas, with her husband, two daughters, and three cats. Turn ons include men who cry during sex, long walks on the beach, and talking about herself in the third person. Turn offs include mean people and trying to figure out how to write an interesting author bio.
She doesn't write about the typical men you normally read about in erotic romance novels. She likes her men brainy and just this side of manic.
She's an introvert, she loves coffee, Internet, British television, and pot stickers. And pie. She loves pie.

This series really had me thinking about what times used to be like, because it sounded like this was based in the ancient times. The times when men ruled and women would just bow their heads and listen to their husbands. I sure as heck wouldn't have liked living in that era, but we get to see a glimpse of what it was like before.
This series focuses on sins of James and his sons. He ruled his sons' worlds and he dictated who they married and when they married. I certainly would have loathed him had he been my father trying to tell me what or who to marry. You definitely can't control who you love and it sucks when a family member picks your mate.
You will be intrigued with these stories and you will fall in love with the Agnesson brothers. We learn a lot from these boys and what they are capable of and what they push their limits to.
I can surely tell you that you will highly enjoy this series. It's sinful beyond belief and things like this do happen in real life. I'm just glad it didn't happen in our era lol!
This author weaved these stories so well that you will keep going and going and going until you reach the end and you're going to wish there was more. I can definitely tell you that I fell in love with Jared, he seemed to be the strong brother and how he treated his wife was unbelievable. You would think that he and Jude would turn out to be like their dad -- far from it actually. They were both such caring and loving gentlemen when it came to their wives.
This book is a collection of all of the Sins of Lethe about the Agnesson Family set in the future - 2250 - where Texas is a separatist state. John Agnesson has trained his son James to be the next ruler of Agnes Oaks, Texas where instead of forward thinking as you would expect in the future everything has gone back in time here. Women have almost no rights whatsoever and are not even given an education. James having five sons whom all have women betrothed to them is where things get interesting. All forms of sexual gratification are deemed sins therefore any and all pleasure his sons gave or received from their wives were against his direct decree. When James' sons rebel we have the Sins of Lethe -
In the first book Jared and Shula were promised to each other almost from birth and now that Shula is eighteen it is time for her marriage. The only problem is Jared has decided he no longer wants to live under his father's thumb so James - monster that he is decides he will marry Shula himself...
Book two continues on the James/Jared/Shula storyline with James' proclivities finally coming into question too. We also get to meet the son Jude as he struggles with his attractions for a previous lover when he is already promised to marry someone else.
Book three good Lord book three... Jared and Shula are still struggling against dear old dad and James - crazy person that he is has seriously gone to new levels of evil as he terrorizes Jude and his loved ones. This book also brings Josiah the only son that leaves Texas to spread the good word all over the U.S. and his lady love Eve...
Book four plays out with James realizing that his so called disappointment of a son is not so bad after all. Shula and Jared also have some resolution to their issues with Jared showing his unwavering loyalty to his love. While some things come to light in a good way we are also left with plenty of what the heck just happened here moments too, I need a drink after this one...
Book five is a joining of forces to revolt against the evil villain James Agnesson. All the boys are discovering his plans / plots and trying to put a stop to his tyranny but in the land of Agnes Oaks if you are discovered for treason it will get you killed. This book has more twists than a pretzel and of course just when you think you know what will happen everything changes up on you...
Book six is the end of this wild and crazy ride where we find the Agnesson sons in "happy for now" situations and all loose ends tied up. The biggest and most important part is that James Agnesson gets retribution for all his sins. While I truly enjoyed this book it had a bit too much politics in it for a romantic suspense. All the other aspects of the story were truly spectacular especially in terms of this new-to-me author's writing style. I will definitely look for more from this author in the future :)
This is a beautifully written, unique book with all kinds of interesting twists and turns. It takes place in Texas in 2280, 250 years after Texas has seceded from the United States and become it's own country. Women are subjugated, marriages arranged at birth or before, and the population is largely extremely religious. There are several characters whose stories intertwine and it's very erotic, compelling and provocative in varying ways. There's rough sex, m/f, m/m and m/m/f, so beware if that's a problem for you.
There's a chance this book gets better. All the rave reviews on here seem to imply it does. But I just don't have the patience or the stomach to get there.
Sex Scenes: -1 star First off, I just can't stomach a descriptive scene involving necrophilia, especially if it's the first sex scene in the book. Even if it involved the main villain and your goal was to disgust the reader, there are so many other ways to hint at this rather than outright describing it. And even if you wanted to include this kind of scene (which I did not appreciate, but maybe some people would?), I think it was poorly handled.
I stuck it out until the first sex scene between the two main characters, but even that felt clunky and did not turn me on at all (although it's possible I was still too disgusted by the previous scene).
Setting: 1 star The dystopian nature of this book just didn't sit well with me. I've read other dystopian romance novels that were very well done, but I felt like this author was reaching. A part of me wondered if they had ever been to Texas or if they were just using all the worst stereotypes about it.
Writing: -3 stars The perspective in this book jumps all over the place. There was no clear division of chapters or even a symbol to indicate the perspective would change. Within two pages, it jumped between three different characters with no indication, and it always took a couple paragraphs for me to catch up. I understand the book is written in third person, but it was third person limited, and that sort of perspective switch needs to be indicated.
I think this book was just poorly written overall. The writing had no flow and did not seem to be edited well.
Summary: There are also so many other little things I could pick out that bothered me about this book, and considering I only got 14% in, that should tell you enough, but I'll also sum it up with this: I can't believe I paid $6 for this book. It was absolutely not worth it.
I really liked this entire series but I gotta say it was a little all over the place and bit confusing. I had a hard time figuring out who was talking during conversations. Also, the author introduced so many characters and for what seems like no reason at all. They didn't add to the story, there was no purpose or leed into another section. Just a bit all over the place.
What I liked was how horrible the psychopath in the story was! I had the creeps big time and was left wanting a shower after just about every encounter. That's how good the author wrote this insane man. The main kids and their wives were great as well. I loved how strong and able the women became considering how they were raised and how they were supposed to be.
There are parts of this book that remind me of the Handmaids Tail but at the same time entirely unique and set apart. This was just one of those creepy-good books that kept you on the edge of your seat.
This is over the top debauchery. This is dark, dirty, violent, and depraved, but above all, intelligent and frightening. I loved it and I am still reeling. Men who crave power and use religious fanaticism to achieve their status is nothing new. Arden Aoide brings it front and center unapologetically and she definitely twangs my darker side. And then there is the mystery side of this book, so intriging, I couldn't put it down. Such smart writing. I recommend it to the stalwart. Women, pay attention.
Covet Not includes six stories about sins committed by people raised under the rule of John Agnesson who trained his son James Agnesson to become the next generation ruler of Agnes Oaks, Texas. Texas was known as a notoriously anti-sexual freedom state. James and his father believed in arranged marriages providing brides for all his sons in order to control the Agnesson heritage. James had five sons: Jacob, Jonah, Josiah, Jared, and Jude. James thought having sons would allow control over Agnes Oaks. James preached to Agnes Oaks the importance of breeding the Agnesson name. The young girls mother taught her what her role would be once married to an Agnesson man.
However, one by one each son brought forth disappointment to James. James would soon learn that he could not control his sons. His sons did not believe nor want to follow the same rules his father believed in. His sons and their wives learned the shame of enjoying sex. The boys disgraced the family legacy by changing the rules between a husband and wife. The boys learned to become unashamed for their sexual proclivities. What transpired instead was a sexual revelation between deviant married couples to go against the rules set forth by James.
James was a man convinced that men held all power and control over women including her pleasure. James was taught that Men had authority and in order to keep it, women must remain silent. James was a master manipulator. James was a man determined to breed a worthy son to rule the land, but in doing so he led a life of corruption, deceit, and destruction. James was a hypocrite. James knew no bounds to his efforts to produce a worthy heir.
It's exquisitely sexual and very arousing. Arden breached the topic of sins in the form of expressing oneself sexually without the guilt that society places upon people bound by religion. With those sins broken down by character in the form of homosexuality, menage, and other taboo related topics it was enlightening. I hung on like glue to those pages where sexual promiscuous lifestyles were explored.
There are multiple stories being told at the same time. A name at the top of each chapter would have been helpful in distinguishing when the chapter switched characters. Had Arden stayed with the premise of introducing more sexual proclivities and stayed away from the politics of oil and land I could rated this higher.
It's a lengthy story. Very detailed. A bit too much information. There was so much going on that I could only focus on James, Jared, and Jude. Anything else was too much. The politics of oil and land was lost on me. Then Josiah confused me. Way too many characters and I'm not sure I grasped the full intent of this story.
Initially published as a series of novellas titled Sins of Lethe, Covet Not: The Complete Sins of Lethe by Arden Aoide has been edited and republished as a standalone novel.
I read the Sins of Lethe novellas as they were originally published, and I have to say that reading the re-edited, standalone version is much better. There is no waiting for the next installment, and the story flows better in this new version.
Set in the year 2250. Texas has seceded from the US, and it is a country of its own replete with border crossing patrols/limitations. Women are subjugated to any male family member—by blood or marriage. They have no rights; they are chattel. Women are discouraged from learning and reading, and they are forbidden to read the Bible. The Bible is used as a means of controlling everyone’s behavior; everyone outside of Texas’ borders is considered a sinner (think Sodom and Gomorrah).
This isn’t a romance per se. It is futuristic and yet a throwback to the past. It is provocative. It is corrupt absolute power, control and sadism. It is hope for change. Covet Not is social-commentary on gender bias, bullying, using religion to control the behavior, and general hypocrisy. There is a generous amount of sex, strong language, and some very disturbing violence, most of which is included to paint a picture of the patriarch, James, and his abuse of the absolute power he wields.
This tale of the struggle against oppression, features the Agnesson clan. James is the cruel, sadistic patriarch who will stop at nothing to get what he wants. He ruled the roost even before his wife died. His boys rightfully fear him. Their new wives are the catalyst for change. The sons desire to live life by their own rules and to protect their wives from James. The couples struggle to establish their marital relationships under James’ watchful eye. Their travels outside the family compound expose them to multitudes of opportunities that we take for granted in the modern world (i.e., internet access, freedom of speech, education for women). Sophia, a Texas and family outsider with revenge on her mind, provides the wherewithal and cunning to end James’ tyranny.
The book is excellent and a far cry from most contemporary literature. Covent Not is a dark, twisted and wonderfully different book, and it is absolutely brilliant. Aoide’s Covet Not is reminiscent of Bradbury and Orwell with a highly sexual twist.
I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. Visit the Book Junkie Reviews blog for more recommendations: https://abookjunkiereviews.wordpress.com
This is not Tame. This is not Ancient Hunger. It is something completely different.
Set in 2250, Texas has seceded from the United States, and is a country of its own. Women have been pushed back to their role from the very early years of our country; discouraged from learning and reading. They are controlled. And those who live in Texas are told that the United States and those who reside there are sinners of the worst kind.
This is the story of Shula, just turned 18 years old. Shula, whose hand was promised to Jared in marriage when they were children. When Jared rebels against his father James, his father decides that he will take his son’s place as Shula’s betrothed. Shula has been quiet long enough, and has decided that she will fight the impeding nuptials.
This is also the story of Jared, who wants to make his own life outside of his father’s expectations.
This is the story of James. James is powerful in Texas, though for selfish reasons. James has been through a few wives, and wants Shula simply for her blonde, light features as well as the fact that he plans to control her in an abusive way – the power to abuse women is his “high.”
This is a series of novellas in one volume that tell us the story of Shula and Jared, who seem to be falling in love in a society that does not want women to have free will. That wants to dictate to their children how they shall live. Further, it is complicated by our villain, James – who is Jared’s father. I haven’t wanted to reach through a book and pummel someone in some time like I do this jerk. James wishes to control not only the politicians, but his own children.
I really enjoyed this whole series. It was hard to put down, and it was something vastly different from other books I have read. You do have touches of romance, even "taboo romance." You have the struggles of the Agnesson sons in dealing with their father James, who will stop at nothing to get what he wants. Plus you have this fascinating version of a different USA in the future, one where Texas is a country all on its own.
The writing is wonderful and the story line not only entertaining, but interesting. You can't help but like the characters, and seriously - it takes good writing to make you dislike someone as much as you will dislike James Agnesson.
This series is insanely good. I couldn't put it down and I stayed up all night to finish it. HFS!!! Imagine the future but instead of progress within the human race they have regressed. Women are considered property and only good for breeding, cleaning, and taking care of their husbands. Fathers sell you off to the highest bidder for marriage or as a breeder. Meet Shula who is betrothed to a monster that is old enough to be her father and has outlived two wives. Shula refuses to go down without a fight. She will use her brains to fight against her wedding to the monster of the patriarchal society of secessionist Texas. Which works so well James gives her to his son Jared as a punishment but both are overjoyed. Arden Aoide takes you into the minds of each character so you know their thoughts, desires, and motivations. Shula and Jared young and innocent. They discover together ways to thwart his father James the evil monster. James is true evil and Arden lets you into his head which is a place of nightmares. His perversions are vast and scary. He believes that he is the Alpha male and he must control the population by creating blond white children. You meet his son who is a latent homosexual, you see inside the mind of his first wife who was the perfect match for him but he killed her. This series is scary, hot, intense, mind blowing, and keeps you on the edge of your seat. It's a twisty soap opera with hot sex and crazy suspense. The good guys be one the bands guys and the bad guys become good. The sex is intense. There is kidnapping, forced baby making, mission work, more crazy sex, and evil brewing in this part of the series. Arden Aoide keeps the reader ingaged in this series by throwing is some many twists. One doesn't know who to root for. The good guy or the bad guy because just as you figure out if the who the character is bam a wrench is thrown in the plot line twisting everything around. Kudos Arden Aoide. Prepare to have your mind blown away
This is a collection of 6 stories in the sins of let he series. The series touches different sins as well as side stories about politics. It's complicated and it's long lol..Not even going there..You need to read it.. What I will say is that I not only enjoy the style of this author, but the contents..first of all imagine a world gone mad, well even worse than it is now..just going backwards instead of forward..that's the best way I can explain. Archaic rules back and cruelty an everyday occurrence. That's the bottom line..but the more you read the more you want to scream and beat someone, namely James, but more than that people that blindly follow and never question. The sins are sex related and I am not talking about extremes either..no, just sexual relationship between a man and a woman; homosexuality; manage. It's a great series because it makes you think and at times I shivered thinking about a fictional word and praying it would never be reality..to that extent anyway, because sadly religion and certain beliefs are so ingrained it's shameful. I certainly hope there will be more stories and more people definitely need to read these stories and maybe gain some perspective.
I've followed this series for over a year now, and those new to Aoide's writing are lucky to get the full story in one amazing edition. Set in a futuristic world in which Texas has once again gained independence- seceding from the wicked, sinful United States. Controlled by a select group of white, male native Texan founding fathers, women have reverted back to the property of men, with no education and no control over who they marry or how they are used for the men's pleasure or power. The story unfolds as a new generation begins to question and rebel against the oppression of the status quo-- led by some of the leaders' own children and a few sinners throw back into the abyss of Texas. Aoide is a masterful storyteller who is not afraid to pick the wings off a butterfly and creates a world which parallels in some ways the worst of our current society while still giving hope to us as her readers. I hope she will revisit this world in future stories. We are not yet ready to fully say goodbye to the flawed sinners of Lethe. (Reviewed after receiving an advanced copy)
A twisted, heartbreaking, unique, and strangely interesting story of futuristic sovereign country named Texas, complete with a wall, breeding farms to ensure the purity of the white race, and complete submission by women. This "utopian" society is ruled by the iron fist of ultra conservative Christian, leader James Agnession. A society where women are betrothed at birth, sexual expression is taboo, and any deviation results in incarceration or death. However..."Nothing was as it seemed." These peculiar extreme laws created a strange bond among James Agnession's 5 sons, who each have their own sexual preferences and tastes. They too, fall prey to their father's sadistic punishments, so they form bond to protect themselves against him and find justice. The result was worth the read. In any other time frame, this read would be considered far fetched and ridiculous, except if you turn on the tv and watch what's happening in the USA during this political election, you may see some similarities!
The description warns that this book is dark and disturbing and disturbing it is. It's basically about James Agnesson and his five sons. It takes place in a future Texas that has separated from the rest of the states and follows its own sets of rules and laws. James has raised his sons according to his personal interpretation of the bible and arranged their marriages before their birth. He is obsessed with the importance of breeding the best grandchildren and does horrible things to get what he wants (i.e. murder, rape, kidnapping).
There is a lot going on in this book and it's hard to keep each son's story straight. We really only get to know three of the boys, Josiah, Jared and Jude, and I honestly kept getting the latter of the two mixed up. The boys are nothing like their father and are actually likable characters. Their wives/boyfriend were likable as well.
The description implies this book is a standalone but it leaves a number of questions unanswered and ends in a way that it could continue. Not sure who or what the "Poison Pen" is. It's told from a number of POVs.
Wow just wow This series is one of my favourites and seri round I've only reread 2 series before this is one of them no standalone's only ever reread this series and 1 other. That's how good it is I don't have the time to reread there are far to many unread books out there to reread but this series deserved my time.
So Covet Not takes place in future Texas ( not my normal cup of tea ). Agnes Oaks is where most of the action takes place it's an old money town where And the things that happen in this sleepy town will get you all riled up. The storyline is one of twists and turns that the author Arden Aoide masterfully creates. She so vividly describes this future place you can see it and feel part of it. Her characters have layers they aren't 1 dimensional and she makes you feel everything they are feeling. I'm so enraptured with the Agnesson family and their plight. I really want more. I can't wait for more.
This is not a sweet story but I love that it's not ❤️❤️
This book is the series sins of Lethe in one. Its a dark, captivating, an dangerous read. Just the kind I love! This revolves around Shula born to be slave to man. Its futuristic, happening in Texas who broke away from the country . All women when they turn 18 must get Wed to the highest bidder, and become there slave. This girl is tough though, she's more then meets the eye for sure! She was to marry Jared one who she prayed would be a gentle kind husband, but for payback his father married her instead. James, he's about as evil as they come, a complete sadist. Can Jared get Shula back ? The one he was meant to be with? Or will she have to live in the cruel hands of James? This book covers that question, and many more . We get to learn alot more about the different characters in the series. This is one engrossing read, that will have you gritting your teeth, and much more! Must read! Highly recommended by Alpha Loving Erotic Book Beauty Blogger
Covet Not is all six stories in the Sins of Lethe series. This series is set in future Texas after the state has seceded from the US and follows the Agnesson family.
This story explores sexual repression and then freedom from those ideals. I loved Jude and Jared's stories and how they planned to free themselves from their father's tyrannical ways and get vengeance for the wrongs he has done to them. I could have done without the side stories about the politics and I felt that there was no real ending. I went back since I thought I must have missed something since there was quite a jump ahead in the timeline. Based on the ending, hopefully there will be more to this story that will close some of the holes.

Covet Not is a collection of six stories about sins committed by people raised under the rule of John Agnesson, and set in the year 2250.
This series touches different topics, mostly sin which in their eyes are in the form of homosexuality, manage, sexual display, etc.
This book is in a way unique, intriguing, enthralling, interesting, with its twists and turns. Is well-written, great plot, and definitely memorable characters. However, I just wish there had been less detailed information in regard certain topics (materialistic ones) and more about the characters.
I definitely recommend this series.
ARC courtesy of the Author in exchange for my honest review. However, I did pre-ordered my own copy.

I received an ARC of Covet Not a few weeks before its release. I read this book by piecemeal for three days because this was a lengthy read and I wanted to enjoy all the six stories fully. The Agnesson brothers were very memorable characters and I was hooked, so this was absolutely worth the reading hours spent.
Covet Not was brilliant! It has a futuristic setting and deals with interesting socio-political and sexual themes that make you contemplate, debate with yourself, and gain some perspective after reading it.
Arden Aoide is a new to me author but I'm very glad I was able to read this book because I have just discovered how profound she is as a writer. I really liked how her mind worked in this book. I'm certainly going to check her other works too.
This series gives me goosebumps it is so good. I will re-read this series many times in the future. What a cautionary tale for today even though it is set in the future. Mississippi's "Protecting Freedom of Conscience from Government Discrimination Act" shows us how Texas seceding from USA to practice religious fundamentalism could happen. Yes, it is a sexy book but filled with passion between partners whether they are man-woman or other combinations. A triumph for Arden Aoide who is a smart author with pithy books that engage your mind and body. Hurray!! I hope she writes as many as possible.

Absolutely amazing! One of my favorite books by far! I was intrigued by the synopsis, I read for hours, I was submerged in the many different characters and their lives. Feelings of angst, heartbreak, love, devotion, loneliness, revenge, loyalty and so much more. The relationships that were forced, but true love was made. The loyalty to family but the hatred towards some. A dark, twisted, unfathomable story of a family in Texas, in the future, where things have completely changed and gone backwards. And I loved it! A definite five stars, worth reading and rereading again and again . I'm excited to see what else Arden Aoide has for me to devour!
Covet Not: The Complete Sins of Lethe by Arden Aoide is a collection of six stories set in the future. The six stories combine to form a complex, twisted, dark, and erotic novel that definitely drag you in. The stories follow James Agnesson, the villain of this epic novel, and his five sons: Jared, Jude, Josiah, Jonah, and Jacob. Not a light read, it can at times seem overwhelming with the many characters and changes in point of view(s) from each book.
Overall, Covet Not is a well-written story and I look forward to reading more from this author.
Covet Not is futuristic story. That is based in the year 2250 in Texas. The world as we know has changed as we know it. Im not going to give out spoilers here! I will say that Arden Aoide lead us on a mental journey of epic proportions. It was dark and mentally draining at times. Plus the book is rather long. Yet it was so worth the loss of sleep.

The year is 2280. Texas has long since seceded from the union and that has gone exactly how you would imagine. (I'm betting Trump was their first president). There are many interesting characters and one evil genius. The story is great, easily 4.5 stars, but I was a bit let down by the ending. I wanted to know more! Not every characters' story was wrapped up. Will there be more?? Also, just a disclaimer: if you, ahem, blush easily this probably isn't for you.
Original idea. Thought provoking. This is not your casual read while you are multi-tasking. The three taboo social topics sex, politics and religion are the main event.
This is not a standalone. The ending is not a cliffhanger but it does leave you hanging. I was left confused and dazed. Don’t let this deter you from this great book. I just know I will have to reread the ending before I start the next book.
This book has all six stories in the Sins of Lethe series. WoW!! This story held onto me and didn't let go until long after the ending!! I felt that I was reading a piece of heartbreaking history.. Repression of the utmost degree toward women. Very interesting intense storyline. The ending makes me wonder if there will be more to this.
