They would meet. It was inevitable. When it was over, one would live and the other would die. But was that true? Or did fate have a different plan for them? Seth Collins was a former recon Marine with six combat tours under his belt. Killing was his business and there wasn’t anyone better. SETH by JB Morris is the ultimate in hard-boiled crime fiction, for a number of reasons.
Firstly, there's the eponymous protagonist himself, Seth. If you're going to name your book after one of its characters, you've got to make sure said character is worthy of the honour. Thankfully, the hero of this story doesn't let us down. Seth is a living, breathing, law-enforcement machine. Due to his decorated military past, he has the edge over all but the most capable of his enemies. It would be easy to turn such a man into a walking cliché, the sort we've seen a million times before. However, Seth has a heart. He doesn't drop his guard for many, but he is more human than most action heroes, and his characterisation is inspired.
Secondly, I loved the author's writing style. Sentences are short, fired at us like bullets from Seth's gun. The vocabulary is spare yet functional - it gets the job done with minimum fuss. There are no wasted words, and this gives the narrative power. Dialogue is punchy and has a realness seldom found in debut novels. Every page crackles with energy and urgency, as if violence could erupt at any moment.
Finally, and perhaps most importantly, is the story itself. Style and characters are crucial, but without a winning plot, a novel will fail. That's decidedly not the case with SETH. Morris paces the narrative superbly, introducing ingenious twists and turns at just the right time.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and I recommend it to anyone who enjoys gritty, gripping fiction.
A story about a drug war and the individuals caught in either fighting for it, within it, or against it. I felt the author had a very well thought out concept and seemed to have a deep understanding of weapons and the type of characters who would be involved in such a war.
The fighting scenes were very descriptive and I got the impression the author has first-hand experience or knowledge of how 'war' scenes are carried out and what affect the various weapons have when used on human beings.
The language used is very easy to read, and the characters well presented. Although this is a story of a drug war, this is also a story of people with past experiences that have left them emotionally broken. The way these characters dealt with their emotions was believable and sometimes relatable. When the author introduced each individual character, it made the storyline more intriguing rather than dragged out.
There was consistent action and personal turmoil throughout the book that kept me reading and wanting to know what would happen next.
‘Seth,’ in the tradition of Jack Reacher, is real hard to put down. Our hero is tasked with defeating the corruption in his own police department, simultaneously dealing with an all-out drug war. Struggling with internal demons from too many deployments, and too many friends lost, he is a reluctant champion. During his darkest hours, a savior appears, full of hope for a better tomorrow. But will he live long enough to seize the opportunity? I suspect another book is under way. I took my time with this novel, enjoying the well-motivated characters and how each scene was laid out, as if choreographed for a movie. I highly recommend this read! Kudos JB Morris.
In nearly perfect silence, the action and excitement start immediately from the first page in a satisfying way.
Mr. Morris’ effective, no-nonsense writing style keeps me on edge throughout the book. The primary theme revolves around the cartel wars, weapon trafficking, dirty cops, and an attractive, sexy never-failed female assassin. Besides the intensity of the plot, the author sophisticatedly creates an engrossing and likable main character, Seth, who is a hero with a compressed emotion. In the midst of the high-energy, intense action scenes, Seth struggles with a heart-wrenching inner-war, fighting his haunting memories of the past combats, dreadful encounters, and his lingering sorrow for the death of his dear friend who suffered and died from PTSD eventfully. His frustration and confusion make him “real” and add to the intricacy and depth of the storylines.
I would recommend this book as a great read without reservation.
I received this book through a Goodreads giveaway. I think maybe the genre was part of why I didn't like it, but there were so many characters and plots going on that I got confused. I felt like I was watching an action movie but without the visual, it was hard to keep it all straight. The writing was very good and well done. I really like the author and would like to see more by him!
The non-Caucasions are cursed with non-believeable dialogue. Too much reliance is put on the unshakeable loyalty the minor characters show to Angel, the so-called supreme assassin. A fast moving story of rival gang warfare spoiled by the embarrasing dialogue of all the drug gang members, especially the leaders.
Seth is a war-weary Staff Sergeant of the elite Marine Corps Force Recon, recalled home after six combat deployments to care for his aged and infirm father. Highly decorated, but broken from the losses of war and haunted by the memories of Marines killed, Seth now works as a police officer for the Hillsdale, Ohio police department. Unfortunately, fate hasn’t offered Seth respite from his demons. The Hillsdale Police Department is overrun with dirty cops and Hillsdale is ground zero for a bloody war between Mexico’s Los Guerreros and Halcon Cartels for control of this strategic access to the lucrative Eastern drug trade. The story is about a drug war and Seth’s healing.
Seth is told from the point of view of many characters. In the hands of a less skilled writer, the shifts from character to character might be confusing, but I found the transitions clear and the look inside all the players’ heads to be gripping. In particular the assassin, Angel, a Mexican woman aligned with Halcon cartel, to be fascinating. She truly is the Angel of Death and appears almost as a magical being emerging from the jaguar skin of the ancient Aztec warrior cult of the Cuāuhocēlōtl. Angel and Seth are two sides of the same coin—warriors to the core, deeply principled, and doing a job. Angel yearns to buy her freedom from the cartel and return to her warrior cult, just as Seth yearns to leave Hillsdale and the police behind.
Author JB Morris is a master of the battle scene. He also has a sound understanding of drug cartel culture and operations. My heart pounded with the excitement of the gun battles. Like Tom Clancy, Morris gives his readers in-depth details on weapons and battle. I came away from Seth with loads of information and even a great idea for a shoot-out in my own suspense novels. Readers who like specific details of weapons will find Seth satisfying.
Morris also does a good job with his character’s voices. Seth’s voice is spare—he’s a man of few words. His superior is more erudite. Angel obviously is speaking English as a second language, although her fluency is excellent. Kat sounds like a modern woman. I appreciated Morris’ tight, spare style. He doesn’t drift into flights of lyrical fancy yet I felt the imagery sufficient to feel like that “fly on the wall” in the scene.
Seth is an intelligent, layered, and fast-paced thriller that will keep the reader turning pages. There is plenty of action and plenty of character development to offer a rich experience for the reader. When things look bleakest for Seth, a savior appears in the form of a “brother in arms” and if Seth makes it through the “mission” his future may be happier. I’m banking on more books to find out.
Lots of action with some romance tossed in for good measure. The story reveals the depths some gangs will go to when trying to establish or protect territories.
Using what I assume is an attempt o emulate a translation of Mexican Spanish whilst it does show that the language is a delight the harsh reality of the drug industry is slightly softened which detracts from the image of Serh
Really enjoyed this outstanding book. Full of action, twists and turns exploring the seedy side of bent policemen and drug lords. A really great read and Highly recommended.

Absolutely incredible. I've never read something that actually puts you in the shoes of the MC quite like this book! It is amazing to witness his adventure with drug cartels, police, the military and life. His experience and qualities helps him get through the toughest situations.
First class thriller kept me fully involved I had a slight problem with so many characters but it was still a bloody good read now for the next JBMorris thrillrr
Morris has done a good job with this book on Seth.We learn a lot about Seth and some of the characters that surround him. We also have a good plot that takes many twists and turns, enough to keep our interest in a high plane and reading through to the end. Enjoyed it and happy it came through the Goodreads Giveaways.
