The ranking surviving officer from the fort has to lead his troops on an impossible march through the heart of enemy territory, fighting every step of the way in a last-ditch effort to reach the main base … or die in the attempt.

Read it years ago and recently listened to the audiobook... the story has such a Traveller feel and could easily see this being adapted into a scenario for that game from Classic to Mongoose 2... of course the keith brothers wrote this story and they have such a wealth of Traveller material under their belt
