“Be a good dog. Protect your home. Be loyal to those who are true. These are the words of the Code of Man.”
— Sister Picassa Collie, Shepherd of the Church of Man

Dogs have inherited the world, building the kingdom of Pugmire untold years after the Ages of Man. These dogs have been uplifted to use tools and language, and they seek to rediscover the world they’ve inherited. Some dogs use the leftover technology of humanity, but they believe it to be magic handed to them by their dead gods. Others seek to create an ideal civilization, using a Code of Man compiled from ancient, fragmentary lore left behind by humanity.

Pugmire juxtaposes the tropes of high fantasy with our relationship with domestic dogs. Dogs adventure to uncover the lost ruins of the Old Ones in search of relics, knowledge, and danger. They have access to magic that they master through faith or academic study. Enemies of Pugmire can either be monstrous or simply other misunderstood people, such as the cats of the Monarchies of Mau. Dogs have a moral code that classifies some people as “good” and others as “bad” (although not “evil” — that’s reserved for insane monsters that only seek destruction and chaos). The world is dangerous and mysterious, but good dogs will persevere.

Some highlights of Pugmire include:

*An evocative, mysterious, and family-friendly setting, presented from the perspective of iconic characters like Princess Yosha Pug.

*A traditional fantasy rules system redesigned for streamlined play and easy creation of heroic dogs, with an emphasis on cooperation and action over competition and violence.

*A variety of callings and breeds that give focus to a dog’s role in society and in the adventuring party.

*Rival races to interact with, like cats and badgers, along with terrifying and dangerous monsters that roam the landscape.

The Pugmire Early Access book is a pre-release, an advanced look at the upcoming full Pugmire RPG. It is a near-complete rulebook allowing players to dive right into the world of Pugmire as the complete game is still in development.

When men are fairy tales and books are written by rabbit- er, dogs, in this case.

Pugmire is a fantasy rpg set in the far-flung future where you play as an anthropomorphic canine. The general mechanics will be familiar to D&D or Pathfinder players.

Bad: The streamlining reminds me of 5e, which was oversimplified for my tastes, the few games I played of it.

Good: YOU ARE PLAYING A DOG!! This is going to be hilarous, and I think it's easy and silly enough my kindergartener might be able to join us.

Future: Needs uplifted ferrets. ;P

I already rolled my character, when do we play??!

An adorable setting for an RPG and just the thought of playing a warrior Pomeranian with a battle axe sounds like the most adorable and funniest thing in the world. And it seems easy to play as it is for the most part a DnD setting and uses DnD rules. While I do find a post human Earth populated by uplifted animals is kind of generic but again the idea of playing Medieval Dogs is just so adorable.

This is a Role-playing Game Rule Book. The "fluff" fiction pieces in the chapters make nice short stories (very short stories), but book is intended to be guidelines used to play a game. The setting of the game is a distant future Earth where Dogs, Cats, Rats, Mice, Lizards, Birds, and some other animals have be "uplifted" to human levels of intelligence and speech.

In the game setting the various societies have a roughly 14th Century understanding of technology. Humanity is gone; leaving our erstwhile companions behind, trying to who we were, why we left them behind, and why so much of the "magic" we left behind is so very deadly and dangerous.

I intend to run a game in this setting for my friends. I'm curious how many will prefer to play Dogs vs. Cats.

BTW: If you are interested in this game, it is available from www.drivethrurpg.com

The Early Access version of Pugmire lays out the basics of a truly innovative game. Humans have disappeared (generations ago) and the new top dogs are dogs. Intelligent dogs have brought the level of technology back up to somewhere around the Renaissance.

While the Early Access version is a little thin in places (as one would expect from a beta version), it provides all of the basics required for game play. I can't wait for the full version to be released.
