When your cat brings you a dead rat, it's a sign of love. But when your cat starts trying to convince you to murder your next door neighbor who happens to be a time traveling thief, it might be time to see a doctor. Coming home from his mundane desk job stamping pages all day, Eddie Levitt talks with his nihilistic cat and dreams of becoming the success he’ll never be. But one day, his life takes a dramatic turn. His neighbor points out that his hobby science fiction stories have already been published. He soon meets a girl from his nightmares, goes on a hunt for a time traveling thief and seeking to find the ultimate meaning to everything, ends up on a murderous rampage. This part morbid comedy and part psychological thriller will have you on the edge of your seat, turning every page until you see finally how it ends is really how it all begins.
Read now what reviewers are saying is a layman's version of Dostoevsky and a book that is much more like Kafka than just a simple romp through time.
This is an awesome book! It has been a while since I`ve read a book as interesting, absorbing and thrilling as "How it ends". It is an exciting journey through the mind/subconscious of the main Character Eddie Levitt. "How it Ends" reflects many problems/issues of our life and manhood such as seeking the meaning of everything, morbidity, psychological weakness and so on and so forth. And, on top of all this, even TIME TRAVEL is in it. Loved it!
This is that Philip K. Dick mixed with Kurt Vonnegut from that underground author that you've always wanted to read. A surreal and cynical comedy that will have you jumping in and out of reality. Shawn Basey really knows how to grab your attention in the opening chapter, and then he keeps it for the rest of the book. Highly recommend for anybody looking for something that twists your mind a different way.
I am giving this one star because I gave up on it. It was too monotonous; the protagonist just wallows in his negativity .. Over and over and over. I see others have given it higher ratings so I will give the book 20 more pages. And if it improves, I will change my review.
