Her life lay ahead of her, a talented and well-trained warrior in a secret supernatural organization, the only place Aria has known as home her entire life. One mistake, one rule bent, all in the name of kindness and Aria finds herself adrift and alone in the human world, an outcast, a half fae, half human with nowhere to call home, no one to stand with her, fight for her or comfort her.
Determined to make it in the human world, she far surpasses her seventeen years in maturity, entering high school, finding a dive of an apartment and landing a job in a quaint florist shop.

Sure, she has powers, sure she will always stand for the underdog, the innocents and when crime hits her town, she is there to protect and serve as an anonymous heroine. At least that how she sees herself. Others would call her a vigilante, but soon, some would call her friend, ally and amazing. One will hope to call her girlfriend. But is she truly ready for the superhero she is encouraged to be? Is she ready to be the human girl she tries to be? When a vile drug called Black Magic comes to town, she knows she must put an end to it at any cost, even if one halfling werewolf goes hunting for her, is she ready to defend herself and her town? Who or what is she willing to risk to end this evil?

THE HALFLING by H.D. Gordon was from start to finish, a fresh and spellbinding read! Aria is powerful as a heroine, she is a force to be reckoned with a heart of gold, a heart that yearns to be shared with others. She is resilient, a woman-child just learning to trust others and accept help. She is also a healer, no matter the toll it takes on her. Her teen companions are the thing of dreams, adventurous, accepting and loyal, no teen angst here! And that love interest? He has his own secrets, too.

I just loved this read, filled with teen growing pains, sad moments of loss, a few laughs and that mysterious neighbor who always seems to show just when Aria needs a helping hand…
This is one of those hidden gems that I am so glad I read!

I received this copy from H.D. Gordon in exchange for my honest review.

I received a copy of this book for read and review, and in that moment I didn't know who the writer is. I assume it is someone new, and I start reading without checking.

Almost from the beginning, I realize it's very good. I like the story, the characters, and the writing, and in the end, I go on Goodreads and seek the author. I find out I already read one of the books from her, and its 5 stars read so, I think I will check some of her other books too because she didn't disappoint this time either.

description

It's YA, and maybe in the future even NA paranormal fantasy book.
There is no romance in this book but, you have two possible love interest, and even a hint of the third one but, guess what? I didn't mind?! As long as in the end she chose one I like the most...

Review: HALFLING by H. D. Gordon

Readers of YA fantasy and urban fantasy will flock to H. D. Gordon's new Aria Fae Series, which offers a half-fae, half-human, young female whose life until recently has been sort of superheroic, serving with the Fae Peace Brokers.

Another reader segment who will cheer are those who've been adversely affected by bullying. Granted, not all of us have the rescue capabilities of Aria Fae, but we can all root for her!

I predict HALFLING and its series will be a very popular YA choice.

I received a copy in exchange for an honest review

Having read some of HD Gordon her books in the past I was really excited when I heard about this new series of her and jumped at the chance to read and review it. The Halfling is a great book about Aria who's an outcast, half Fea and half human, she doesn't belong in the human world where's she's stuck. She battles depressing and isn't at a good point when the moves to Grant City, but I think she finally found her home. She meets Sam and get's a purpose and immediately things are looking brighter, until things start going wrong again. It's a bit urban fantasy and a bit superheroes, it has action, cool gadgets, awesome characters and more.

The Halfling is a well paced story, that kept my attention the whole time. It's told in such a way as if the main character is telling her story after everything happened and she hints to bad things that will happen and which decisions contributed to that. It added some suspense to the read and was well done. And once things start going wrong it was hard to put the book. I liked how this book ended, but at the same time feel like it's only the beginning and I am curious about the next book.

Aria is a great characters, she can't help but care about others and helps them when she can. But she can also be a badass fighter, who fights for good. She struggles with depression and I thought the author handled this well, not go too deep into it to make it truly depressing, but do give a feel for what she's going through. And even though what's she's going through she still tries to be polite and responsible most of the times, even though there are a few scenes where she flips. I loved reading about Aria and her story and seeing how she interacted with other people, like Sam, the flower shop owner and her neighbour.

The friendship between Sam and Aria is so awesome and a central part of the book. These two meet each other at the right moment and quickly become great friends, they are there for each other and help each other out. They complement each other and it was great to read about friends like this. Sam is more a nerd or computer geek and the perfect sidekick for Aria. Sam also has been gone through a lot and still struggles with things. I thought she was a great character and a good friend to Aria.

There is a hint of romance in the form of two possible love interests, but it's not really a love triangle. There also isn't much romance, just a hint of what could be and might grow into more. I preferred her mysterious neighbour to Calem as love interest.

The world building isn't present a lot as this story takes place in the human world. Yes Aria is a half-fea and we learn about what that means for her and her powers and a bit about the peace brokers where she worked before, but we don't learn a lot about the other world she talks about. There is some cross over with the author her other series, so it might get explained there. Nevertheless I never felt like the world building was lacking, it simply isn't necessary to know more and would bog down the story. So we learn what's relevant and the rest stays a bit of a mystery, which worked well.

To summarize: I really enjoyed this book, I got sucked into the story from the first page and enjoyed the story. It's paced really well, with hints of what's to come and enough plot lines and tension to keep me looking forward to what would happen next. The characters really make this book shine, both Sam and Aria are great characters and we really get a good feel for both of them. I liked how their friendship took much of the center stage and these two where such great friends and I am happy they found each other. There is a hint of two possible love interests for Aria, but this book doesn't really focus on that. The story fully takes place in the human world, so the world building stays limited. But that's okay, we learn what's relevant to Aria, her powers and a bit of her past. And while I am curious to learn more about the other worlds, it's not relevant in this book and I didn't feel it was missing. I am pretty sure this book is only the start and I can't wait to see how the story continues in the next book!

Aria Fae is half fae, half human, but has lived in the fae world all of her seventeen years. She worked with the Peace Brokers, helping to maintain peace amount both races. She is very familiar with the human world, but after she is shunned from the fae world when her mother dies, Aria finds herself banished to the human world and all by herself. She starts as a senior in high school and just tries to fit in. Being half fae, she has some super powers. She can jump really high, and she is a slight empath - plus training as a Peace Broker, she has very good fighting skills.

Aria gets a job at a local flower shop so she can afford her crappy apartment and she also gets a best friend by the name of Samantha Shy. Samantha is all human, but eventually comes to learn of Aria's fae blood. Samantha's mother has died and the two of them start to investigate the circumstances surrounding her death. There is a new drug in the city called, Black Magic, which all leads to one big crime lord that twists around with the death of Samantha's mother. With the encouragement of Samantha, Aria starts to become a vigilante. She wears a mask and goes jumping off into the dark night, stopping crime all the while getting clues about the new drug in town.

And let's not forget boys. Aria has a very mysterious, hot neighbor named Thomas who is a man of few words, but I think will play a bigger part in future books. And we have the hottie and super rich Caleb Cross, whose dad is a well-known businessman in town. There isn't any romance in this book, but I think it's being set up for something in future books.

I really enjoyed this world and Aria. It's a geeky urban fantasy. Aria is only seventeen, but to me she came across a bit older - but still awkward - after she uses her superpowers a bit to get up on a roof:

"I...uh....I didn't know anyone was up here," I said, needing to fill the silence that hung between us. I turned back around, ready to hop back down the fire escape.

"Woah," he said, standing up, his muscled body drawing my eyes despite my resistance. "There's a door. Stairs," he added.

I flashed a sheepish smile, trying not to think about how the sound of his deep voice made my insides twist pleasantly. "Right," I said. "Doors are cool."

Aria is a fun heroine - she's witty and tough and I adored Aria's friendship with Samantha. They go from strangers to truly best friends by the end of the book. It's a very positive female friendship. While Aria is out using her superpowers to fight crime, Samantha hangs back and uses her super-tech skills as support. I like that Caleb and Thomas circle around on the outskirts and the author doesn't rush anything with them. She gives us some subtle hints and clues about them but for the most part they are still a mystery.

There a few things that made me scratch my head. Aria is half fae and has trained most of her life to keep peace between the human and fae race - but - I wasn't sure how that plays out in the human world. I don't think humans are aware of supernaturals, so where do the Peace Brokers come into play? Plus, I would think Aria would be able to detect a supernatural pretty quick in the human world, but one kind of takes her by surprise, and I figured she would have been much more prepared for that possibility due to her previous training. I also would have liked to know more about the fae world and why she was banished. I kind of feel the fae world comes into play at the end and it was more of an easy way out. The fae world isn't explained well in this one.

But with all that being said, I enjoyed Aria and Samantha. Book two comes out next month and I'm looking forward to it.

The Halfling Review on K-Books

When Heather contacted me and asked if I wanted to read and review her new YA series I jumped at the chance. I have been a big fan of HD Gordon ever since I read her YA debut Blood Warrior and I adore books about the Fae so when I heard about this series and what it was about I couldn't wait to read it. I didn't really know what to expect from this book as it's been a long time since I've read anything of Heather's and I know her books would be a lot different from the ones I experienced back when she was just starting out writing but holy crap this book was amazing. I absolutely loved it and I am dying for book 2.

Aria has been left to fend for herself in the human world after spending her life training with the Peace Brokers, a secret organisation. She now is trying to live a normal human life and hiding her Halfling abilities. But can she stop trying to help people when she has the ability to when everything in Grant City turns dark?

I loved this book! Like I seriously loved everything about it. It was fast-paced and fun and I just loved the characters. I loved Aria, I loved her friends... I basically loved everything about this book. It was amazing. The friendship between Aria and Sam was such a beautiful thing to see develop. One thing I adored so much was that the book focussed more on their friendship than the love interests and I think more books need to do that. Relationships are great to read about but friendships last forever and I loved that Heather focussed on that aspect so much it made the book just so much more amazing to me.

Okay now enter the love interests. The most obvious love interest was Caleb. He's rich, sweet and funny... what could go wrong? Well nothing. Nothing could go wrong I really liked him but for me he was in the shadows for Aria's beautifully handsome and secrative neighbour Reid. I adore him. He isn't in the book quite as much as Caleb but the moments he is in I loved every scene. I am hoping for a lot more Reid moments in book 2.

One thing that I am sad about is that I read the entire book not realising that it links in with another of Heather's series. I didn't realise this until right at the end because I haven't read Heather's other series. A part of me wishes I had as I feel like I'd have felt for Aria and understood her so much better if I had so I definitely need to go back and read that other series.

The Halfling was amazing. It really touched me and I can't wait for the next book. It was absolutely amazing and I can't wait to catch up on all of Heather's other books. I loved it.

The Halfing is a fun start to what I expect to be a super exciting series! Aria Fae has just been exiled from her home world. She's half-fae and was trained as a warrior, but now she's just a normalish teenage girl trying to scrape by. Lucky for her, she meets tech genius Sam on her first day of school, and finds someone who she can be honest with, so she won't be so alone in this new world. Together the girls decide to use their talents to find out what happened to Sam's mom, while also stopping a deadly drug known as Black Magic from taking over their city.

Fairy vigilante! How can you not want to read about a fairy vigilante, which is exactly what The Halfling is about. Aria uses her super speed, strength, and other fae abilities to stop drug addicts and criminals from committing more crimes. Meanwhile, Sam creates gadgets and runs their lair. I know it seems really improbable, but it was so fun. And it does make perfect sense once you get to know these girls. Sam is lonely and just wants to know what happened the night her mother died. Aria is depressed because she lost her sense of purpose and self when she was cut off from her kind. Teaming up gives both girls the connection that they need. And it's just action packed, exciting, and fun!

Really, the best word for The Hafling was fun. It was a feel good read and just made me happy. I loved this mashup of fae and superhero. And the relationship between Sam and Aria gave me all of the squishy feelings! Plus, their friendship is front and center over any blossoming romance that may be there. Yes, there are boys that Aria has her eyes on, but who has time for kissing when there's bad guys to stop and best friends to hang out with? Although I do expect (and hope) there will be kissing later.

The Halfling by H D Gordon is the first book in The Aria Fae Series, a paranormal fantasy that exceeded my expectations with fantastic writing and characters that grabbed hold of me and wouldn’t let go.

Aria knew she couldn’t run from her past, but here she is, in a new place. She is a skate board riding Fae, part of the Brokers, an organization of Halflings, half supernatural and half human. She is an empath and I cannot imagine how difficult that would be in high school. Her empathy and need to help gets her in trouble, but I love her for it. How can I resist a strong character who marches to her own drum?

She meets up with Sam, a girl hacker who becomes her BFF and it changes everything. I love the little nerd, Sam, who is your typical teenager…except for her supernatural skills. I love the connection that brought them together, but you will need to find out for yourself. The girls fun personalities and watching them grow and blossom as they create their family kept me on pins and needles as I kept waiting for the bad to happen. I know it has to come, but I love these kids so much I don’t want anything to happen to them.

Thomas Reid is a hottie and I think he is holding a secret that will add more to the suspense.

H D Gordon can take a familiar theme and twist it so creatively that it becomes fresh and original. Her descriptive writing makes the story seem real and I am unable to resist being drawn in deeper with each page I read. The Halfling has so much that I love, the paranormal, fantasy, determined women (albeit young ones) and so much more. As the story grows, so too does the suspense and mystery. I never saw where this was going and I love when a book exceeds my expectations. I can hardly wait to see what happens next.

I received an ARC of Halfling by H D Gordon in return for an honest review.

Fae to the rescue 5 stars

*An ARC was provided for honest review for Wicked Women Book Blog*

H.D. Gordon is a new author to me and I was captivated by her storytelling. The Halfling is fast paced, mystery/suspense urban fantasy that takes you on a wild ride. It has magic, cool gadgets, super swoony men, a kickass heroine, smart and engaging sidekicks and best of all it also has a superhero.

Aria Fae is a seventeen year old, half human and half Fae, who has been banished to the human world. All she knew to be true is no more. Her mother is gone and so is her home. The Peace Brokers she has spent her young life serving for has exiled her, never to return home again. Never thinking how she will survive on her own.

As Aria struggles to accept her fate, she finds herself suddenly thrust into an alien world called, Grant City. She wants to desperately blend in, become the shadow, and hide from everyone so no one notices that she is different.

On her first day at school, she rescues Samantha Shy from getting beat up and forges a bond of true friendship in the midst of confusion and loneliness of this new destiny. Samantha takes Aria under her wings and shows her the ropes. Sam is a geeky, computer whiz. But deep down Sam hides an intense pain that was brought on by the loss of a loved one.

As the story develops, I loved how the author addresses Aria’s battle with depression, how she defined the disease. She portrayed Aria as a strong willed, young woman yet she did not shy away from showing Aria’s vulnerable side. As Aria struggles with what the future holds for her, she succeeds in acclimatizing herself to her new situation with the help of Sam and finally reveals the truth about her origin to her. Sam being Sam totally embraces Aria being half human and half Fae.

H.D. Gordon very subtly incorporate a touch of romance into the story with the entrance of mysterious Reid and charming young Caleb. All through the book I kept rooting for Reid, he played an integral yet elusive role as Aria’s neighbor. Aria manages to intrigue Reid but he keeps his thoughts very close to his chest and never reveal that he knows or that he sees everything. And for Aria there is something about Reid that strikes her imagination and seizes her teen hormones. Whereas, Caleb played a huge role in the story what with his father being who he is. Caleb on the other hand is pretty straight forward about his interest in Aria and he pursues her relentlessly. As Aria slowly starts to make a new life for herself in Grant City, she also makes a new friend in her employer, Rose.

Then Sam, because of her tragic past and because of the Fae skills that Aria possesses, comes up with a plan. She wants Aria to fight crime during her nights and keep the streets of Grant City safe. Sam manages to get her childhood best friend, Mark to tag long on their quest. At first things are easy, dangerous but exhilarating, the trio make a perfect team, each bringing a skillset into the mix. They manage to make quite a dent in the Black Magic market. But little do they know that the main man, Mr. Shy wasn’t a dummy. My heart about jumped out of my chest with what transpires. The true revelation of who Mr. Shy is and what he is all about almost made me throw my kindle. What Aria had to face, how she had to center herself. And the ending and the hurting. OH MY LORD.

The ending left me craving for more and some part of why Aria was banished comes to light. It made me angry and sad and I wanted to hug her and make her feel safe and accepted. If you haven’t read the The Halfling then don’t wait any more, go and 1-click this fastastical story about Fae and their kinds.

I received this book in exchange for an honest review. So, here it is!

First of all, I need to point out that I really enjoyed it. It was action-packed, a real page-turner actualy, I literally couldn't take my eyes away from what I was reading. I got really into it, and the only thing I wanted to do was finding out what's going to happen next.

Also, the characters were really eye catching, in a good way of course. (Maybe expect for Sam, she was only 15 and behaved like a grown up. I did like her, though. Just not THAT much) My favourite character though , Is Thomas. Mysterious, full of unknows neighbour. It just sound captivating, doesn't it? I am so curious to find out who he actualy is. And I do have some theories.

Furthermore, I liked the way Halflings (Here, Half fae half human). It's different than other books. And I liked it.

It's also worth mentioning, that this book was one of the books that made me wonder what really makes the book popular. All in all, it's just as good as , for example, Shatter me or other well known books , in terms of writing and compelling content. And plot twists, of course.

All in all, I am really excited for the 2nd book to come out in March 2016. Now, the waiting shall begin.

And thank you H.D Gordon for giving me the ARC. I truly hope the book will be just as successful as it deserves to be.

I really enjoyed this one. Aria is initially struggling after a previous run-in where she was bested, so ends up in a poor part of Grant City, depressed, alone and poor - and only 17 years old. But she isn't helpless - far from it. With superior strength, speed, impressive fighting skills, enhanced vision and hearing, she has superhero abilities which she uses to defend the weak from the ruthless strong. At school she gains a computer geek as her devoted friend and sidekick after rescuing her from the clutches of a bully.

But, for me, what sets this apart is that Aria's depression isn't a temporary blip that she throws off once Life gets a tad easier. Throughout the book, her struggle against the black sense of helplessness threatening to engulf her, is well charted. She says several times that depression is so hard to deal with because it is so difficult to overcome - and has a habit of returning. This is a strong start to what promises to be an entertaining series. Recommended for fans of YA urban fantasy adventures.

Aria is half Fae, half human, but now has to try and live a human life after being kicked out of her Fae guild when her mother died. She has been trying to survive and go to school, but overall is wallowing in depression and loneliness. When an act of kindness causes a girl to befriend her, it sets into motion a chain of events to change both girl's lives.

I have read a lot of books by H.D. Gordon and I can honestly say that I am a fan. She has the ability to craft interesting, detailed worlds with strong relatable characters. I have yet to be disappointed by something I have read from this author. When I had the opportunity to read this new book, I jumped at the chance. Not only was it a good author, but an Urban Fantasy, which is my favorite genre. One thing that Gordon does in all her books is the does or real-life situations, like death, depression, loss and tough decisions. Don't expect her books to be filled with butterflies and rainbows, but truth and feelings.

I was not let down by this book. I loved Aria as a character, she was resilient and brave, with some interesting powers and an epic appetite. Sam was like the side-kick, a crazy smart hacker girl who could make the impossible real. Together they made a well rounded team, with the rest of the assorted characters thrown in. The plot was fast paced and engaging, with twists and magic (as well as magic drug problems) and I could not predict the direct that it would go in next.

Overall, I am a fan of this book and want to have more set in this world. And I would love to see more about Reid (he was my favorite and I hope for a love connection between him and Aria despite the the conflicts.)

I received this title in return for my honest review.

1) I normally don't like "fairy" type stories but it's not like that.

2) Read this friggin book...

Aria is a Halfling. So half human and half Fae. So obviously she is no ordinary teenager. After a huge loss, she moves to Grant City. Within, the first day she saves a girl Sam and they become friends pretty much instantly. They are in ways, a lot a like. Aria pretty much kicks butt. Sam is amazing with technology. I loved their relationship. There's a lot of humor in this story, which I love. I'm a huge Buffy fan, I like the seriousness and humor mixed in with it. And add a whole bunch of butt kicking and danger. If that even makes sense.

I'm glad I took this chance, to read it. It was a nice change, to read a different genre and really dive into it. To be honest, I knew from the first page I was going to love it. The writing really took hold of me, like I was meant to read it.

Aria is a different type of character. I just loved everything about her. She wasn't the whiny I have to save the world. She was a ninja and even in her weakest moments. She was able to defeat everything in front of her.

This is a series, so If your looking for an amazing Sci Fi/Fantasy. Pick this one up. I can't wait for the next one....Lissa

Honestly...this book was riveting. I was so excited when reading the description and then I squealed in my seat when I got notification that I was going to receive an arc. H.D. Gordon is one HELL of a writer who always keeps me glued to the pages and leaves me fully satisfied with my read of the book. The first book I read of hers was JOE and I am now slowly making my way through all of her books.

If you like urban fantasy and the idea of superheroes, you want to pick up The Halfling when it releases. Aria Fae is likable, relatable especially when she is demonstrating how much she loves and cares about her friends, and totally bad ass. I'm very excited that this is going to continue in a series and cannot wait to get my greedy little hands on the final copy in a few days and then the next book.

Disclaimer: I received an ecopy of this book directly from the author in exchange for my honest review. Hate it or love it, this author trusted me with a copy of her work to read and review. Thanks, H.D. Gordon!

I received this book as an ARC to read. This book is the first one of a new series by H.D. Gordon. Great plot, 17 year old half breed peacemaker kicked out from her society to live with humans on becomes a modern day superhero to save her town from a new drug. The story line grabs you and sucks you into the book, as you try to read faster and faster to find out what is happening and going to take place. I couldn't put it down, and finished the series within two days. It is great for an easy read and to get lost in another wonderful make-believe world. I will be actively waiting for more of this series!!

This is a superhero-esque Urban Fantasy that feels like the start of something huge. It has all the right elements of a Super Hero novel, from the make shift team to the desire to 'clean the city' - along with the prerequisite super powers, though these stem from Fae blood, not any accident or alien intervention.

From the first chapter, this novel hits the ground running and drags the reader along for the ride. The characters may be young, but they don't seem, or read, young. In fact, Aria is far too mature for her supposed age, and living alone at 17? Who in their right mind would rent to a 17 year old? Regardless, it's obvious that Aria as seen and dealt with some sh*t, and little of it is good.

I kept getting the impression that there was a series previous to this one, where more foundational information could be found. The Queen, the reasons for her exile, the history of the Halflings - it's all a bit confusing for now and I fear I am missing half the story. That aside, it is interesting enough to keep going, even if I am lacking previous knowledge. Hopefully Book 2 will make up for that and clue me in.

Perspective
First Person, Single POV

Ending Type
Episodic

Rating
PG-16

Romantic Dynamic
Not sure? M/F if anything - this is an UF and thus focused on action. Romance is a subtle plot point, but the story would read the same without its inclusion.

Character Age Range
Aria is 17, almost 18, but one of her side-kicks is 15.

My Final Verdict on The Halfling

A touch confusing, yet still thrilling, this is a Coming-of-Age SuperHero Urban Fantasy with all the foundational promise of some of the bigger names. Action filled and subtly sweet, it's a book you an enjoy no matter your age.

The Halfling is a super fun and action packed read that always has you at the edge of your seat!

When the author first contacted me to review her book, she described it as a superhero/vigilante type novel, something inspired from shows like the Arrow or Flash. I admit, I've only watched maybe two or three episodes of the Flash, but from what I did watch, I can say with confidence that the tone of the show and book are the same. I went into The Halfling with expectations, and they were met completely! Heather executed the superhero theme flawlessly.

The protagonist was a very likable character. She had so much insight on other people and spoke truths in such volumes, partly due to her Fae Empath powers no doubt but also because she was incredibly mature for her age. She didn't judge people at first glance but looked deeper, trying to find what had hurt them that caused them to lash out at others. But also, she was seventeen, which meant she still had some growing up to do in other departments. For example, she was extremely impulsive. She ignored her gut instincts and what her head told her at times because she let her emotions take hold of her. Because of this, she found herself in trouble more than a few times. This didn't make her a TSTL protag in my eyes, more of a you can grow from this throughout the next books type of character.

There are two possible romantic love interests, making this a probable love triangle in the future. However, the romance was very light in this novel, so it didn't feel that way. Although Aria's attractions were pretty immediate, it was more of in an outwardly way. She didn't fall in love with both of them at first glance, making this, thank God, not an instalove love triangle. Although you can definitely tell something might spring up in the future, Aria gives herself time to get to know these two guys before she begins to actually develop feelings for them. The one dislike I had was how often and how predictably she "ran into" the love interests, but each run in was so hilarious on Aria's part that I was able to ignore it for the most part. The sandwich incidences in particular made me tear up a bit. They were so cute and made me fall in love with the guy involved.

The plot itself was pretty simple "save the city" type stuff. It was predictable, but that doesn't mean I had any less fun reading it. I do hope for more depth and plot twists in the sequels though.

Overall, The Halfling was an entertaining read that I couldn't put down! It was a bit generic, but I still fell in love with all the characters and interactions between them. It's also nice to see a protagonist who is both confident and kick ass in one area of her life but nervous and dorky in another. It made me love her all the more. I can't wait to watch her story continue, and I definitely recommend this to anyone who has a craving for all things superhero.

Heroine- 4/5
Action- 5/5
Romance- 4/5
Plot- 3.5/5
Overall- 4/5

The Halfling was a fun book. I loved getting to know Aria, Sam and all the characters in this story. If you know the authors other works you might have met Aria already and see some familiar faces in this book. Eeek!

Aria Fae is a halfling. Half fae half human. She used to work for an organization that straddled both worlds, trying to keep everything in check, but she has been kicked out and left to fend for herself in the human world. She has been floating and just moved to Grant City to start over again. She tries to keep to herself, but she just can't help stepping in when someone needs help. She finds herself making a few friends and just starts to settle into her life there. Sure it is not the most normal life, but she is not a normal human. Oh it was a fun read.

I must say the beginning was a bit slow, but once Aria becomes friends with Sam and they start doing their super hero thing I just loved it. Like I said above Aria just can't sit back and not help someone in need. When she starts to help fight crime and comes across a really bad situation it gets a bit intense. There is a new drug on the streets, a drug that makes people a bit crazy, and is really not good. The new drug is starting to spread through the streets and when Aria finds there is more to this drug than it seems she must try and stop it. With Sam and Matt on her team helping her fight the bad guys in Grant City she thinks she has everything under control. Of course it is not that easy, but it is fun. The bad guys were pretty awesome. At least those we met. I loved watching Aria come into her own and try and deal with everything. They didn't make it easy and I can't wait to see what happens next. I'm curious as to who the head bad guy is, the one really in control of everything.

Through it all there are a few other characters that pop up, and I am curious to see where the story goes with them. Especially the neighbor. He has a story I am sure and I can't wait to see what happens with him. So yeah. This book was a fun read. Aria and crew are trying to fight crime and help save the city, they start to figure out what is going on, but they only get the tip of the iceberg.

The Aria Fae 1

Being seventeen and an outcast is hard. Being seventeen and only half human is harder.

When Aria Fae gets casted out of the Peace Brokers, a secret supernatural organization that’s trained her since infancy, and is left to fend for herself in the human world, she finds herself in Grant City, intent on attempting a normal human life.

As a Halfling, Aria has abilities that are a little underused in the flower shop she lands a job at. And when her new friend Samantha Shy enlists Aria to help investigate her mother’s death, the two girls decide to become vigilantes.

A new drug called Black Magic is running rampant in the streets of Grant City, turning people into supercharged maniacs. With Sam’s mad computer skills, and Aria’s Faevian abilities, they may be just the heroes Grant City is in need of.

Or they may find out they’re in way over their heads, and their mutual crush on the same guy is the least of their worries.

Summary:
If anyone understands no good deed goes unpunished it would be Aria. For helping the sorceress queen she was banished from the Peace Brokers to the human world without any help to rebuild her life. Aria was understandably angry and depressed, but when she sees a girl, Sam, being bullied she steps in to help her. That one act of kindness is the first step into building not only her new life, but the new family she always wanted. Sam and Aria click in ways neither expected bringing both friendship and excitement as the two With the help of Matt, a friend, decide to work together and rid Grant City of Crime. Aria may be used to fighting evil, but between missing women and the new drug Black Magic Aria and her friends could be in for the fight of their lives. Add to that, one very well placed socialite, Caleb and his father who sends off vibes that make Aria wonder if he is friend or foe. This was one sweet ride from the start and this is only the beginning of what looks to be an incredible series.

The Halfling was a very good YA paranormal story.
I sat on writing this review for about 3 days because I had to sit, think, absorb, and debate with myself. The main character Aria Fae is a Halfling, thus the name of the book. She is half human and half fae. She is a conundrum because right when I think I have her figured out she does something or changes on me. She is a contradiction at times which caused me to be more impressed with her character.
From the first page of this story, I was intrigued and followed through in finishing it in a few hours. By the end I was feeling like a 16-year old girl again. The author makes you feel what her character is feeling especially since it is a first person point of view. I experienced a very good dose of hormonal anxiety because of the two male characters, but that is not the main focus of this story.
Aria goes through a lot in this book. She has to start from scratch and moving to Grant City was the first step for a new beginning. She meets Sam who is a computer genius. I think Aria and her friend Sam’s friendship is what made this book for me. That type of friendship with no judgment and always being able to count on one another is something to be treasured. Another factor that this book was really good in conveying was depression. This is a very serious issue and a lot of people suffer from it. The author did an amazing job in communicating what depression feels like and makes you experience it with her character Aria.
This was a good read and is perfect if you want an action packed, angst filled, semi-light book to read.

This was tremendous fun – it read like a comic book movie in story form, for girls. Or a mash-up of a buddy and a superhero story. Aria was a great kick-ass heroine, and her friendship with Sam Shy (love her name!) was fabulous. H D Gordon took some YA conventions and gave them refreshing twists: the school bully Aria “rescues” Sam from isn’t a spoiled princess, but a wiry athlete and boxer, while her victim is a bona fide computer genius.

I wasn’t quite convinced by the romance thread with Caleb Cross, although again I liked the twist that the two friends liking the same guy were able to joke about it rather than turning to instant enemies over a boy. I think my main problem with it was that Reid, even if he was older, was so obviously hotter than Caleb!

I’ll confess I got a little bit confused by the sorceress queen at the end. From what had been said before I though she was responsible for the death of Aria’s mother, but it turned out she was on Aria’s side. However, this didn't spoil the story, I just needed to change my assumptions.

This is a fabulous book. I loved the characters, I loved how the plot progressed and the different elements all meshed together, and (this is the first in a series) I loved how it finished its own story properly, but also set up the next one – I've got to read that!

Disclosure: I got a copy of this book free for an honest review. That's what I've given it.

I am a gigantic fan of H.D. Gordon everything she writes is amazing and this book is no exception it was amazing from start to finish and had me on the edge of my seat the whole time. There was action, adventure, friendship, espionage, and even a bit of romance also there was much more that I don't want to say in case I spoil something.
Araia was a great lead character she made me think of a cool mash up of Daredevil and Jessica Jones which is great since I love both and it may of just been me that saw this but even if it was I loved it. the rest of the cast of characters were great as well I loved watching Sam and Aria get close and find what they needed in each other they were a fun pair and I cant wait to read the next book and watch these friends take on the world.
I would strongly recommend this book to anyone and everyone I think H.D. Gordon writes books for everyone even if you don't like paranormal stuff you should read this. No matter what you like to read this book is for you in fact I think anything that Gordon writes is for everyone and I want everyone to know how awesome her books are. If you don't rad this than read one of her many other Gems and bonus for anyone who has read her other books than you will see a familiar face in this one.
Thank you to H.D. Gordon for this wonderful book and for all the other wonderful books you have written, I will be a forever fan of yours this is a fact!!!

I was given a copy of this book by the author in exchange for an honest review.
I love stories about faeries, and this one was quite different. Aria is a halfling- half faerie, half human- who has just been kicked out of the Peace Brokers (organization that trains halflings for keeping peace and monitoring the supes) for helping a sorceress queen against their wishes. Her mother was killed, and she's never known her human father. Now that she's stuck in the human world, alone and broke, she's made her home in Grant City. School starts off not so great, stepping in to stop bullying and getting suspended right off the bat, but she does meet Samantha, a 15 year old computer genius, who she also skips with to attend a science convention where she meets rich boy, Caleb Cross.
Samantha's mom was murdered- another bonding point for the girls), and there's a huge drug problem in GC with Black Magic. Black Magic makes its users crazy, to the point of craving the flesh of other people. So, now that Sam knows a bit of Aria's abilities, they decide to use those abilities for a bit of vigilante justice, and Aria goes out night after night stopping crime. What she doesn't know is that in doing so, she's walking right into the hands of the most dangerous drug and human trafficking rings' front runner, Dyson.
Such a great book. I can't wait for the 2nd to come out. The writing was great and flowed very well. The story was well thought out and developed, as were the characters.

It starts with a clever name: Aria Fae, an irony, a jest. Then the story explodes, and it’s incredible. I don’t read fairy tales, I’ll admit it. I don’t know much about Fae or Fey. I agreed to read and review this book based on an awesome cover, simple as that. I didn’t know until later what is was actually about, and I have to say that I’m glad I didn’t. All of my preconceptions about YA books dealing with fairies, or faeries were WRONG. The Halfling was an incredible adventure! I fell in love with the characters right away. As a father of two teenage girls, I felt immediately connected with Aria and Sam and the struggles they face, then, add in the fact that Aria is only half human and the conflicts grow more complex, and enthralling. This book delivered on every level for me, from great character development to intense action; I was never bored and I could not put it down! I feel like the author has opened new doors for me, not just sharing a great book, but introducing me to a genre I might have never explored. Read this book, whether you are 16 or 35, it’s a fantastic story.

I always love stories that involve the fae and this author has done just that but this time our character is not just fae she is half human half fae. I really do love that this character drowns herself in books to escape her reality. "Books have saved my sanity more times than I can count, and if i'd ever needed saving it was now"
Aria Fae has been caste out of the life she always known and so she just kind of floating around trying to find her way and what she really needs a new mission and that she looking for what every person who lost their way she looking for a home a place that belongs and calls to her. As the story progresses Aria does find that mission and ends up finding along the way a bit more about the fae part of herself and we get a small glimpse into that world she left.

In the end "Aria is a warrior, and no matter the ferocity of the beast at her back, she would turn and fight and it at the very least would remember her name. "

I am excited that this is going to be six book series currently and that they will all be out this year. Happy reading.

I received a free ARC copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

We step into a world with this amazing halfling girl, and learn how true friendship can be. We also learn just how dangerous the human world mixed with halflings can get. This story pulls the paranormal, action, survival, danger, and friendship into play. If you plan on reading this free up your time, because you won't want to put it down.

Page one had me. I was pulled into a place where my stress no longer bothered me, because this book was so greatly writen, that I got to live in it, and all that mattered was that book, and everything that happened in it.
