Rate this book
When people started eating each other, the government sent guns.

When the virus became airborne, they sent masks.

When it spread beyond their control, they gave up.

And when they found those who were immune, they hunted them.

Years after the virus claimed the mainland, the Capita seized power. They offer safety from the infection, and all they ask in return is your freedom. All they want is unswerving loyalty. All you have to give them is everything that makes you human.

Bounty hunters pursue the immune so they can sell their flesh. The Resistance conspire against the totalitarian regime. Isolated islands discover the horrors of the infection for the first time. Survivors, killers, protectors and pursuers, all try to survive in a world spiralling into hell.

I'm from Lancashire in the North of England, a bleak place that influenced Winterfell in Game of Thrones. I love a good story, afternoons in the sun with my wife, zombies, watching Game of Thrones, stroking dogs and medium-rare steak.

Check out my book series if you're a fan of horror or post-apocalyptic fiction:

Fear the Dead

An apocalypse series set in the North of England 15 years after the event, where we see how normal people survive the end of the world. Or sometimes, how they don’t survive…

The Dying & the Dead

A post-apocalyptic series set in a world where a regime called The Capita has taken control of the mainland. The air is laced with infection, and people must wear masks to survive. Some survivors are born with immunity to the virus, and this lets them breathe the air unfiltered. The Capita hunts these people down in an attempt to make a vaccine for themselves.

The Haunting of Towneley Manor

I rather like this lad.....

I read all Mr. Lewis's "Fear the Dead series, which were clever and imaginative. Dam ed if he didn't make it 4 in a row, this kick off to a new series was just as good. This a post apocalyptic tome (YES, another one, but wait.....) tells two tales (I adore alliteration) of people dealing with the Capita, the "Man" who runs the safe zone. A virus has purged mankind, and the few immunes are sought by the authorities because eating their flesh staves off the disease in those infected. See? Nice little twist there, a good variation on the sub genre. The thing is, as with most books I've read, it's the characters. Lewis doesn't rely on black and white people, the good guys have flaws and the bad guys have a back story and areas for sympathy. Oh yes, and there are zombies too, they are mostly a background presence here, there was a lot to set up, plot wise.

And it looks like there will be more!

Dammit, this is absolutely a five-star story! The problem was that there were too many times I was taken out of the story by bad grammar and syntax. I'd gotten upset to the point that I wanted to give it three stars, but the actual STORY is too damned good.

If the author could/would spend some time polishing up the typos, this would be a five-star yarn... without a doubt!

The Dying and the Dead

This is the first book of Jack Lewis's that I have read and I don't know why I waited so long. I loved the book and the characters were well written and I want to read more of them.. This is a story of a virus that causes zombies and some that are not quite zombies, which are humans but to stay alive, they need to be fed human flesh of the immune, called "mouth breathers". Then enter the bounty Hunter, Charles Bull! A man who hunts the immune, adults and children, This man has no remorse at all over killing anyone, that includes children! Another character is Heather and her daughter Kim along with a boy that she is trying to rescue, Eric. She was being hunted by the Bull and captured. The kids were sent to a camp and she was on her way to the city when she escaped. Do I have your attention? I hope so, get this book to find out what is going to happen! I need to get the second book in this series so I can continue the story.

A dystopian apocalypse

This is a good book, well written in spite of the errors in spelling and mostly just leaving words out or putting the wrong word in. In other words, it needs an editor. But it really didn't affect the story or the reading of it.

This is a story of basically two different groups of people. You have Ed and Bethelyn (love that name) in one story and a woman and her child and a boy she takes in. They live in a society arranged after the apocalypse supposedly to protect the people. The Capita is the center of this city and society but only some live there. Both those who do and those who live outside it are in danger, in different ways.

My first reading of this author but it won't be the last.

Original Idea

I thought this book was just okay. Liked the storyline, very original. Only problem was I didn't feel very connected to the characters. I didn't like them or dislike them it just felt very hollow. The conversations amongst people was choppy and frankly irritating.

Of course it ended in a cliffhanger requiring you to buy what is probably going to be book after book. I truly wish this would be revealed in the synopsis of the book. Am I buying the next book. Absolutely not.

I gave it three stars for the original idea of TEOTWAWKI.

Be advised: unnecessary profanity.

The Dying and the Dead 1: Post Apocalyptic Survival centers around what happens to people/society after the fall of man. To what degree will people allow themselves to be shepherded? How much abuse will people suffer to find a degree of comfort in a world turned deadly. How far will some go to achieve\retain power over others, how far to simply survive? Mr. Lewis developed his characters well which allowed me to care about their well-being. I look forward to book #2.

Good read. Recommended.

Had a super hard time getting into this book... it just felt like a book that wanted a storyline but just didn't achieve it.
The story actually started getting good at Chapt. 13 " Heathers story "... and pretty much the entire book was... Ed's story, Heathers story... jumped around way to much
I honestly just wanted to put this book down so many times and just give up on it ... but I didn't, I read it through... but prob wont get book 2 or 3 .. for at least this series.

Twisted

I did not like this book because there is not enough action. As in all zombie novels it is the other humans survivors must worry about. They totally disgust me. At the end of the book the characters and story became more lively and interesting yet, not enough for me to go on to the next novel.

TONS of grammatical errors!!! Proofread your book for crying out loud. I REALLY wanted to like this book; the story line was promising, but the sheer amount of stupid completely avoidable errors ruined any chance I had of finishing it. I think I might have made it through chapter 6. When I have more time, I will post some examples of errors.

Too much like short stories thrown together, never came to a meeting of the people in the story. It should have had a focus they were all aiming for.

Great book

I would recommend this book to zombie lovers. It's a really good book, but there are some grammatical errors. It keeps you interested, but leaves you wanting a bit more.

Napriek slubnej anotacii kniha nemala spad.
A oblecenie? Ved to je tiez kontaminovane. Ale ok, odpustime, pokracujeme.
Sledujeme pribehy niekolkych ludi.
No a este vytykam autorovi kopu chyb, preklepov. Takze za mna 3*
