When a young Pakistani bride falls to her death from a window, Rosie has to navigate the story with care, trying not to upset the girl's devastated family or the local Pakistani community. After talking to the family, however, Rosie becomes convinced that there is more to the story than a tragic accident, and that something is being kept from her and the police. Meanwhile, on the other side of Glasgow, Nikki and Julie, two prostitutes, find themselves in trouble when a client dies during an assignment and it looks like one of them is to blame. Their problems become far worse though, when a briefcase they steal from the dead man turns out to contain some very valuable rough diamonds and several fake passports. It's clear it belonged to some serious criminals, and now they have much more to worry about than a dead body. Investigating the Pakistani girl's death, Rosie has been talking to Laila, another young girl from the community, who has voiced her fears of being forced into marrying a much older man in Pakistan. When Laila disappears, Rosie is sure her fears have been realised. Then Nikki contacts her asking for help, and Rosie senses a parallel with her current case. Sure enough, as Rosie flies to Pakistan to try and rescue Laila, it becomes clear that the 'accidental' death, Laila's disappearance and the briefcase are all linked - and once back in Glasgow, she, Julie and Nikki discover just how much danger they are in...
Just like the earlier books in the Rosie Gilmour series, this is action-packed and I really wanted to keep reading to find out what happened next. A great plot with lots of danger and tension!
If you haven’t read any of the books in this series, you really do need to make a change and sharpish! I read my first Rosie Gilmour book back in 2012 and haven’t missed a single one since. This is the 6th book in the series and the series itself is showing no signs of weakness, it just seems that each books gets better and better. For those not in the know, the series surrounds a Scottish journalist by the name of Rosie Gilmour. This book can certainly be read as a standalone but I would highly recommend reading the series in order. I feel like I am getting to know Rosie more and more and was really looking forward to the latest book.
This book had a slightly different feel to it compared to previous books, I think mainly due to the subject matters. There are two main threads to the story and each one is utterly compelling. I have come to know secondary characters and was pleased to see that Rosie’s colleague Matt is still alongside her and the regular appearance of her boss Mick as well as her police contact Don makes it feel like things are ‘as they should be’. The first element of the story means we see Rosie investigating the death of a Pakistani bride. The second thread is at the opposite end of the spectrum as two prostitutes find themselves in the middle of a major problem involving the death of a client.
In the beginning I was a little concerned as the two stories seemed to contrast so highly I couldn’t even begin to contemplate how the story would pan out. Thankfully, I am a reader and not a writer and the story itself was absolutely brilliant which just proves that Anna Smith is at the top of her game. I don’t want to mention too much more of the storyline as the way this books reads and pans out is all part of its brilliance.
Once I hit chapter 6 there was no turning back and the story just got better and better. With regards to Rosie’s personal life, we also get to see some developments, and literally that is ALL I am saying. Am I pleased with the developments? I don’t know yet, but think maybe the next book may help in my decision (Anna Smith you naughty woman). The absolutely best thing about these books is that they are SO real. Anna’s previous journalism career shines through and I literally feel like I am taking the journey next to Rosie. From Glasgow to Pakistan, this latest Gilmour book is full of excitement and adrenalin and is by far THE best book of hers to date. This bad boy is grittier than sandpaper and you’d be a fool to miss out!!!
I usually love this series but for some reason this was one fell short, so I'm a bit dissapointed. It was 2 stories that didn't seem to work and it just felt amateurish which is unual for the author, hopefully the next one's will be back to the previous standard.
I really got swept up by this one and the tension didn't let up until the end. This is a great series and with the main protagonist an investigative journalist she has a lot more freedom than a police investigator ever could. I'm maybe a wee bit sad that I'm now up to date with all the books and will have to wait a while for a new one. I did read two of them out of order and my only confusion was with Rosie's personal life. Great book, and I highly recommend the series.
Rough Cut is an excellent, fast paced crime thriller, featuring Scottish journalist Rosie Gilmour. Rosie puts herself in some very dangerous situations in pursuit of a great story, taking her to Pakistan to help a child bride, and crossing paths with some dangerous criminals to cover a lead on rough diamonds. The author is obviously well versed in these topics from her previous career in journalism. Although I had not read any of the other books in this series this book still shines as a stand alone. I look forward to reading more of her books.
I have know idea why I have missed this series, absolutely brilliant, brilliantly written ,great story line that grips you from the first page,an edge of your seat story line fantastic read, I hope Rosie finds happiness..... got all your books downloaded ready to go, great narration to go along with all this series, 10 stars for you Anna Smith ☺ x

Another Rosie gilmour drama and what a drama it is loving Rosie and the other people she works with, I get lost in the drama not to be missed hard to put down to know what happens next
Not my usual but a good story - fast paced and easy to read. Would probably been better to read the series in order as there were some references to previous happenings but didn't spoil the enjoyment.
Yet another smash hit Rosie Gilmour Glasgow journalist story. Anna Smith does a Fab job of bringing to life the trials and tribulations that a journalist goes through.
Just brilliant gripping, sensational. Anna Smith does Rosie Gilmour again. You could almost be there watching every piece of the puzzle unfold. Genius.
I just couldn't believe how good this book is. It was just amazingly well written. Rosie gets embroiled in hot topics again and unleashes a barrage of issues that others dread to go anywhere near. Honour killings Asian crooks Manchester crooks Glasgow crooks. What a brilliant storyline. Lots of twists all the way to the end I loved it. If you haven't read any of these Rosie film our books....why not? If you love being lost and immersed in stories you will just love this author.
