Masquerade - Mason Black Bk 2 - Written by Adam Nicholls
Ignorance is bliss or is it? Revenge is better and very sweet!

It's been one year since the Lullaby Killer was punished for his crimes, and Mason Black's life has already improved. His PI business is thriving, his family life is stronger than ever, and after years of misery, he's finally happy. It's a shame it has to end. Three bodies have been discovered with accusing messages carved into the skin. Hiding below the police radar, Mason flees across San Francisco in search for answers, desperate to find his tormentor before the SFPD arrest him. His only clue? Somebody wants revenge, and they'll stop at nothing to take it. Trust is broken, friendships are damaged, and the fate of Mason Black is uncertain. The plot unravels at a truly exciting pace in this shocking new detective thriller from Adam Nicholls.

What did I like? Well, first off, this author has been added to my favorite author's list. His books are off the charts. I just don’t know where he comes up with the awesome storylines that he has written about. After you finish this series don’t miss out on the Evie Black ones. He just gets better and better.

What will you like? Mason is that one character that you can relate to. With his life going so well he just explodes across the pages with his flight to stop the crap that is going to hit the fan! The action becomes too intense and the twists and turns unbelievable with the end taking a giant leap at an accelerated speed. But, don’t stop there because he has a new adventure coming up and like I said it just keeps getting better and better. Borrowed from Kindle Unlimited.

It seems that his past is coming back to haunt Private Investigator Mason Black! The consequence of the actions of Mason and his San Francisco police friend Detective Bill Harvey, when previously they tracked down a psychotic individual torturing and murdering children, looks like it will end their careers!
A series of bodies are discovered yet again in San Francisco, and mutilation of these bodies with cryptic messages indicates troubles for Mason when the police take more than a passing interest in him. He manages to keep his distance from the police as he attempts to unravel the accusations being made against him, and then his sister Evie is kidnapped. So the story unravels as Mason pursues a lady of the night that seems closely involved in the ongoing murders and disappearance of Evie.
Eventually, Mason and Bill with support from the SFPD rescue Evie and forestall any action that the SFPD would have instigated as a result of the cryptic messages being put forward by the current murderer.
Another excellent story from Adam Nicholls, which despite a lot of blood keeps the reader on their toes throughout.

Mason Black is back in the 2nd of the series. The first ends, right where this one begins. In the first book, Mason was after the Lullaby Killer. Near the end, Mason and his friend, Bill (who is a still a Detective) teamed up to find the serial killer. He had killed Bill's son and he wanted to find him and he needed Mason as his best best to find the Lullaby Killer.

Mason was on the SFPD, but now is working as a Private Investigator. But Bill and him have a secret, what did they actually do when they found the Lullaby Killer. Now someone is killing women, and leaving a note that Mason killed the Lullaby Killer by torturing him.

This is a thrill a minute. Evie is back helping Mason, but now it might cost her her life as by trying to help her brother, she is taken by the killer. Mason is running from the police and now feels responsible that his sister is missing and he is the one that put her in danger. Now the serial killer,
Lady Luck, is after Mason to get her revenge.

Can't wait to read the next in the series. Great thriller series.

What a finale to Missing this was!

For a young author, Adam Nicholls has already reached great heights with his confident and gripping Crime stories.

If you thought Missing, Book 1, in the Mason Black Three Book Series, was gripping, let me tell you that this book continues in the same vein.  I devoured the book in just two sittings with much lost sleep! Thank you for that, Adam!

Although both Missing and Masquerade can be read as stand alone stories, Masquerade neatly and seamlessly continues on from Missing and is no less compulsively consuming.

Rather than spoil the read with a full description, it is enough to say that this story will have you biting your nails whilst turning the pages at breakneck speed.

If you haven't read Missing you certainly won't want to miss it.  Either way, both books are compulsive reads and come highly recommended.

Now for Book 3, Manhunt - What will Mason Black encounter next? I cannot wait!

A prostitute. A knife through the neck. And a dead young man. It seemed like just another murder scene…except the body had a message carved into it: “Mason Black is a murderer.”
It was a case he had no choice but to take…if he wanted to stay out of the spotlight. Could this have had anything to do with this old case on The Lullaby Killer? Could what happened on that case lead to Mason’s arrest?

Story is so gripping right from the start. Mason Black is one tough, kick-@ investigator. And while he’s trying to clear his own name, there’s another killer on the loose known as Lady Luck, who’s been sending her own messages. Time becomes even more vital when Mason’s sister gets kidnapped by Lady Luck. Will Lady Luck get her revenge? Can Mason stop the killer and keep the police from finding out his dark secret?

It's another dangerous game of cat-and-mouse. Well-written and enthralling! Just an exciting thriller!

I read this book as part of a box-set and this is a entertaining police/private investigator action thriller. I really like the character Mason Black who is our 'good guy' but he has a dark edge and isn't afraid to push past the limits that restrained him when he was a cop.
Personally I thought the end was pushing plausibility a bit too far but isn't that why we read these stories? I read this book for the escapism and action, as I do with most books I read. So is it fair to say its too fantastical? Probably not. Either way the story is tense and it's entertaining and I really enjoyed it. A good follow up to Missing. This book works well as a 'part 2' but it isn't really essential to have read the first book. If you can read Missing first though as it adds to the overall story.

This Vigilante Justice Thriller is intriguing. Lady Luck provided several bodies implicating Mason Black in the death of the Lullaby Killer. Mason goes underground to find the answers that will prove his innocence regarding the latest deaths.

The demented need no reason to bring death and destruction upon others. Lady Luck is just such a person. Yet she has a reason and evidence to prove it. She prefers to bring desperation and despair upon her target, Mason Black. The story thoughtfully goes through some dark paces to reach its conclusion. Overall, this tale is entertaining.

Easy-to-read. Entertaining. Great world building. Haunting. Romantic. Scary. Tragic. Unpredictable. Wonderful characters.

It was a very absorbing book. Although quite gruesome in places, it was one that kept moving at quite a fast pace,
Nice short, snappy chapters, with something happening almost on every page.
Kept me very interested, and although it did follow on from the first book 'Missing', it is fine to read as a stand-alone.
A good story, so now I am looking to read the next in the series, which I think is 'Manhunt'.
I might read something a bit more light-hearted, as a change first, ( Maybe a Millie Johnson, which is often a feel-good story ) then go back to Mason Black.
But highly recommended, and a page turner you won't want to put down.

I enjoyed this book. Plot and creativity of the story was/is awesome. I could feel the tension when she could see him in her desperate moment. The heart break when he left. The feeling that you are being watched. Knowing when you are drawn to a place but not sure why. It can make your spine tingle cause you can relate. The characters are loveable. It was a great read. The foul language was not my favorite. Mostly the use of God and Jesus Christ. I think the use of some of that kind of vocab could have been left out and it still would have been a great book. This author has great talent and I am looking forward to the next book.

I enjoyed riding this story, despite not reading the original case involving the Lullaby Killer.

The twist to the story became clear fairly early on, though for all that it was an intriguing read. I thought the characters were very well-crafted, and the twists and turns sufficient to hold my interest.

The main character's working from behind the scenes as a 'marked man' was very well portrayed and added to the suspense of the story.

I would recommedn this to those who love this genre.

Masquerade was an AWESOME read!!

Masquerade takes up, with things from
Book 1. Mason is after the sister of book 1 killer, she's as crazy as he was. His family is sucked into the mad world of another serial killer, and Mason has to find and rescue them. A total can't put down, until the very end!!

Masquerade

This is the second book I've read by Mr Nicholls mainly because of the series. I had to know who was taunting the main character even though I had guessed but was disappointed the book didn't tell why she was taken away in the first place (unless I missed that)
Enjoyed the book and story though and would read more

Gritty character

Mason Black, PI, is a man of many parts.....caring father, ex-husband, slightly offhand brother, ex-cop and secret murderer. But sometimes fate intervenes and relationships find themselves under the microscope and explanations are demanded. Mason copes admirably. A box read.

I have the box set which includes this story, book two of the Mason Black tales.

Insanity is certainly the main theme, with revenge and murder in the mix. I didn't like most of the characters - crazy or selfish - and I think MB is a little too good to be true. Evie is more interesting though we don't know her full story yet.

However, it was a fast-paced entertaining read.

Adam Nicholls definitely knows how to tell a story. Even when you find out who the demon is he has more surprises in store for you. This is the second book in this series I have read and I am truly starting to feel bad for Mason Black's family. This one had me on the edge of my seat and I found myself making comments out loud when it got towards the end.

Too Slow

The plot was good, too much of the idea was slow and felt that the author could have filled the book with a much more detailed and descriptive idea of San Francisco.

Overall a generous 3*

A Fantastic Series

Mason Black is a strong, forceful and likable character. The plot twists back and forth and it is very rewarding to see the hated character get her just dessert at the end of the book!

WOW!

Book 2 was as juicy as book 1. I love the short chapters, interesting story back-end on the characters. I'm hoping Mason and Diane book up! I'm an African American who lives in The bay area.

A fairly journeyman read

This is a fairly average novel, and I can see the series going on for a long time, but this second (fairly short) novel hasn't held my interest enough to invest in any more of this series of novels.

This was a fast moving crime spree.

I liked this book because it was fast moving and hard to put down. Mason had to move fast to save his sister from a crazy woman who would stop at nothing

torture anyone who crossed her path.

This book was OK

Not a great read, but not a terrible one either. Wouldn't say I can't wait to read another book by this author. Time will tell. As of today..... not any time soon.
