Caris looked around for a new target but could see only the 'lost ones'. She slid down behind her boulder and fell in behind Lillin, who with the expertise and grace held only by elves, was picking a trail through the large rocks, around the battle field, toward the rear lines...Caris found a suitable position and peered from behind a boulder. Her breath caught in her throat. Gone were the ruthless grey people and the savage but somewhat familiar derks. They had been replaced with the creatures of her nightmares.
Battle is joined. The King's Army face the Dark Lord's terrifying beasts, some familiar, others Caris wouldn't have believed possible. Her abilities will be stretched to the limit, and she will gain new ones she never imagined.
Meanwhile, Janen and Kalen, with a few of the King's Horse, are trying to fight their way clear of the derk encircled valley. Kalen has received word that her betrothed (missing for three years) is being held captive, and Janen is determined to help her rescue him. Their journey to find him, however, is fraught with danger, and no-one seems able to give them any information about the menace that lies ahead.

Riveting!
Couldn't put it down! I have fallen head over heels in love with all the characters, and will mourn them greatly at the series end. I own them electronically but can wait to buy copies for my children. Thank you Melina for sharing your wonderful gift.

Another delightful journey with Caris, Janen and a whole cast of delightful characters that seem to walk right off the page and into my imagination. I am looking forward to the culmination of this series.
