The Spies That Bind

Rate this book
…If a kickass middle-aged bookkeeper got sucked into a spy’s life…

Secret agent Aydan Kelly is hoping to resume her peaceful life as a bookkeeper, until her director issues an ultimatum: Go undercover as an arms dealer or go to jail for life. But when Aydan realizes her co-worker’s son has been taken by a serial killer, she defies orders in an attempt to save the child.

Neglecting her undercover assignment may cost more than just her freedom. When the gunrunner she’s been baiting threatens her loved ones, Aydan must choose between protecting them herself or entrusting their safety to geriatric amateur vigilantes while she closes in on the killer.

How much will she risk for a child who may already be dead?

Contains coarse language, moderate violence, and sexuality.  The story can stand alone but will be more enjoyable if read in order.

If Janet Evanovich’s quirky humour met Robert Ludlum’s taut thrillers, the Never Say Spy series would be their love child:   racy, fun, and action-packed!

By profession, I’m a technical writer, computer geek, and ex-interior designer. I’m good at two out of three of these things. I had the sense to quit the one I sucked at.

To deal with my mid-life crisis, I also write adventure novels featuring a middle-aged female protagonist, Aydan Kelly. And I kickbox.

This seemed more productive than indulging in more typical mid-life crisis activities like getting a divorce, buying a Harley Crossbones, and cruising across the country picking up men in sleazy bars. Especially since it’s winter most of the months of the year here.

It’s much more comfortable to sit at my computer. And hell, Harleys are expensive. Come to think of it, so are beer and gasoline.

Oh, and I still love my husband. There’s that. I’ll stick with the writing.

Basic Details:
Book Title: The Spies That Bind
Subtitle: (Never Say Spy #11)

Genre: Spy/Mystery
Part of a series? Yes
Order in series: 11
Best read after earlier books in series? Can be read on its own but better after the 1st ten

Overall score:
I scored this book 5/5
⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️
Short Summary of the book:
Aidan Kelly still dreams of going back to the quiet life of a bookkeeper but there is no going back. She is forced to go undercover once more and is forced to decide where her priorities lie when John Kane’s son (he didn’t know he had) is abducted. Instead of safeguarding her own future, she decides to do all to find her friend’s son knowing full well he may already be dead. What will this do to the relationship between her and John?
What I liked about the book:
I loved this book as much as I did the first ten. Aidan’s principles force her to choose to save a child even if it means she herself may be forced to go to jail. Not a mean fete for someone who suffers with claustrophobia.
What I didn’t like about the book:
There is nothing in the book I didn’t like.
My favourite bits in the book:
Too many to count, I loved the book.
My least favourite bits in the book:
There were no least favourite bits. The book makes you want to read on and not stop after the next.
Any further books in the series? Any more planned by this author?
That is the good news, there are 14 more in the series already and I can’t wait for no. 15.
What books could this be compared to and why?
Recommendation:
In summary, I would recommend this book for the following readers:

Children No
Young Adult Yes
Adult Yes

If you like a tongue-in-cheek spy mystery this book may be the book for you.

I look forward to reading more books by this author.

Henders/the spies that bind

This series was superb. Love her style of writing with mystery, drama , some humour. Aydan finds herself helping kane find his kidnapped son, which he found out he had one, along with kane best friend hellhound. In the mist of all this, she's undercover again on another mission , add in that someone trying to sabotage one of her team member wedding and you got a bunch of senior citizens who goes to protect spyder, the one that's getting married and you got chaos. Gotta loved the gang of misfit.

Intense!

Ms. Henders has upped her game with this story. More danger, more fraught moments, and the usual crowd of exceptional characters. I love this series, and really enjoyed this book.

Absolutely perfect! I adore this series and The Spies That Bind maintained the quality and spirit of the others. Life is tough enough since Aydan can't quit even though she is no longer needed to enter the network; her skill would be invaluable to the enemy so she either keeps working, lives in a safe house for the rest of her life or is killed. Death would be preferable to the safe house for this claustrophobic. Now she expects to be put to work as a true spy without the skills! Just as she is force to return to active duty one friend is targeted for vandalism or more and another discovers that he is a father and the child has been abducted. Even more than the fact that she doesn't have their backup, is the fact that she is limited in how much she can help either of them and she is approached by a connection to Fuzzy Bunny, one of her greatest fears.

As much as I love Kane, I adore Hellhound!

Absolutely brilliant and cannot wait for the next in the series. I have just read all 11 books in the last couple of months. I did get confused in the very first book but there was something about the way it was written which made me want to buy the next one, and then the next and so on. I love the characters in the series and the descriptions in the book make them so real. My daughter has just started reading them and she has already said 'I love Kane what's wrong with her choosing Hellhound'. :-) As said previously as these books go on they have just got better and better. Keep them coming Diane.

I checked The Spies that Bind out from my local library. Undoubtedly, my favorite book of this long-running series. Many of the open threads were concluded, and multiple sub-plots kept the pace fast and intriguing, adding to the overall development of each main character. I loved the advancement of the story line and will eagerly (and impatiently) await book 12. Henders outdid herself in this installment, weaving twists and surprised through the whole book. Note: some parts may not be suitable for people with rape or violence triggers.

OMG! Another great book by Diane Henders! The first chapter had a shocker in it but it got better as I went through the book. So glad it had a happy ending all around. This book and series is a definite MUST if you love spy thrillers that have humor in them. This is the series for you!

This is one of those series that you can't wait for a new release. Ayden Kelly is a bad a$$ and her adventures are always action packed. This one didn't disappoint. Diane Henders weaves a detailed story that sucks you in from page one. I'm ready for the next one!

Yet another great book by Diane Henders. I love reading about Hellhound, Kane and Aydan. Stemp seems to be thawing towards Aydan or is the loneliness he feels escaping him? I guess only time will tell.

Very disappointing.

Diane needs a long rest to give her imagination a new boost. Maybe it's time to try something new and different.
