My 8-year old son loves Sonic the Hedgehog. Toys, puzzles, clothes, video games, comics... you name it - he's got some. So I was really happy when I found this book for him. So the five-star rating does not necessarily reflect what I myself got out of the book, but rather what a kid who likes Sonic would rate it. I wish, when I was a kid, I'd had a book of this kind about some characters & universes of my own childhood interests, like Goldorak (also known as UFO Robot Grendizer), GI Joe, or Transformers.

It's a gold mine of information on anything related to the many Sonic comic books and the elaborate (if convoluted) universe that has been created & steadily expanded over the years. The characters populating that universe are many, each with their own complete back-story and whatnot. To this day I'm impressed how much the Sonic phenomenon has grown over the years (and keeps growing). You'll also find in there information on timelines (alternate or otherwise), on locales, on events, even some characters' family trees!

My son actually read the book cover to cover, at a pace of two pages a day. That might not seem like a lot, but the font size is actually mostly "normal", not "large". And it was a good place for him to learn new words, too.

I'm very happy my son loves to read to begin with, but finding such a wonderful book (for him) was great. Know any kids that like Sonic? Get them this book, they'll be really happy!

Tons of typos and retconned information (I mean retconned DURING the Archie run). Isn’t a full repository of characters, is very base-line, and feels somewhat thrown together. Some characters (like Nic) have a redesign that is completely unexplained (and aren’t very good). The map of Mobius was nice, though.

Read the Sonic wiki for Archie instead! I’m keeping this as a piece of history more than a reference.

For the pre-Ken Penders Lawsuit era, this is a good book to have to fill you in on the characters of the comic book series. Now, since Sega's become involved in the comic, this book is out of date as an encyclopedia. Still an interesting piece of fan memorabilia to have.

Re-read and reviewed for Hedgehogs Can't Swim, my Sonic blog. Expect that review to go up on the website in early October.
