Daaimah S. Poole was born and raised in Philadelphia, PA. She graduated from Temple University with a B.A. in journalism in 2003. While attending Temple, Daaimah worked almost every job imaginable – receptionist, car salesperson, bill collector, waitress, tutor, and substitute teacher. She would later say she was unintentionally doing character research.
Daaimah completed her first novel Yo Yo Love at the age of 19, without owning a computer or knowing how to type. Yo Yo Love went on to become an Essence Magazine Best Seller. Her subsequent novels, Got A Man, What’s Real, and Ex-Girl to The Next Girl, have cemented her reputation as author on the move.

Let me begin by saying that this book is part of a series (which I'm reading in reverse🙃), but can easily be read as a standalone. It's about a group of women involved with men of notoriety, that go thru so much, in order to…either get it keep his last name. There are sacrifices, struggles and secrets, that is found out…could destroy their way of life.

This book easily reminds me of a novel by Jackie Collins, which is definitely a compliment. There's drama on nearly every page, which led to sleepless nights and a book hangover.

The character development is on point and the storyline flowed, which is why I gave it 💎💎💎💎💎. I highly recommend this book and hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

You don't have to read Ms. Poole's other books in this "series" to enjoy His Last Name. But if you're like me and need to read a story from the beginning, the other books that precede this one are A Rich Man's Baby, What's His Is Mine, and Pretty Girls in the VIP.

In this book, three characters are familiar to readers: Adrienne, Zakiya, and Shanice. Adrienne is broke once again after her epic fail in the last book, Zakiya is still trying to manage life as the significant other of an NBA player, and Shanice appears to be doing well as a men's magazine model, but she wants more and still has feelings for Zakiya's husband Jabril.

Two new characters enter the scene: Monique, a once-struggling teen mom who raises her basketball star son to NBA stardom, and Tiffany who leaves her former NFL star hubby when the money runs out to chase the NFL player-turned movie star-boyfriend she left behind in college.

It's the same story as the other three books, women (except maybe Monique) who would rather obtain or maintain financial security through a man instead of through their own hard work. Adrienne annoyed me the most because she has an education but would rather lie, cheat, and scheme on a man to live on easy street instead.

I loathed Tiffany because she was shallow and entitled.

I liked Zakiya, but I still think she suffered from low self-esteem because I had the sense that she was constantly looking for approval. She does make some decisions that made me believe that she was growing up.

I could relate to Monique because I once was a broke single mom and that does something to you, but Monique went off the deep end.

I liked Shanice's hustle, but lost some respect for her when she left an extremely financially stable guy who treated her well to chase after Jabril. Again. I thought she would have left him alone after the last book.

A point of contention in this book: a character is gay and the author trots out the old "I'm gay because (insert trusted male adult here) molested me" cliche. I did like how the author did recognize that being African-American and gay is still not fully acceptable in society like it is for others and that was the motivation for this character to keep his sexuality a secret.

The book was a fast-paced, breezy read and the ending leaves the door open for another installment of the adventures of all five women, but if the series continues, it would more than likely feature Adrienne, Shanice, and Zakiya.

Was Monique suppose to be LeBron James momma ? ..... she got on my nerves trying to be young and sleep with someone sooiio close to your son. I hated how her Kadir was so naive, boy your family wanted nothing to do with you until after you got that contract when will young black men learn..... Monique should've just stayed with Carl I hate how some women do men wrong especially good ones , I don't feel she got her Karma.......

Tiffany didn't have a mind of her own and seemed to be living the way her mother wanted her too & her doing that didn't do her any personal favors because she still ended up screwed mad at herself. one thing I do agree with though is she shouldn't have left her husband they should've found god and accepted reality working a 9 to 5 job is wayyy better than having everything repowed out of their life.

Zakiyah still didn't learn her lesson smh her cheating husband, fake friends, fake church oh my goodness girl have some backbone ....

Shaniece so pathetic still 😶😶😶😶 instead of getting her daughter back she rather chase after someone else's man & fame hard headed women seem to never learn.... she knew she was in the wrong but still did the crap all for a worthless man and 15 minutes of fame, the last place her daughter needs to be is with her..

Adrienne once again she was railroaded omg and instead of renewing her licenses to get her daughter back she's back in some B.S with an even crazier broad Morgan Carter in the end I can't even be mad at her she did what she had to do to get her daughter back even if that meant living a lie with an even richer man .....
Alot of lessons could be learned from this book :

-be your own woman.

-always be there for your children install in them of people who really care about them and people who only wants them around to be beneficial.

-even when it seems like it's glitter its not all what it seems to be.

-don't open your legs to married men.

-when a man shows you his true colors believe him.

-internet fame isn't everything.

-the Lord will love you because of who you are not because of how many checks you write to the church.

I enjoyed this series by Daaimah S. Poole. All the drama kept me wanting more. All 4 books in the series were good . There was even a character in Book 4 with my same name and I could relate to her. 😂

I will say, Book 2 through me got a little loop. It took me a minute to get into it. But once things started to fit in place again, it was a go.

I would recommend this series to others.

I've been following this series from the beginning .Ive read Poole's other work as well and she keeps getting better. But this third installment was not as intense as the first two.
By the end of the second installment you sort of get an idea of where the main characters are headed. There was no surprise.
I felt the first book was really driven around Adrian's story. I really didn't care for her but in the second and third installment she comes full circle and even if I don't like her, I understand her but still.. I don't respect her drive for wealth. Not to the extremes she's willing to go. She basically sacrifices everything and yes part of it is about her daughter but the core of her character is driven to be wealthy and kept.
The second installment was really mostly centered around Zakiya and her man which involved the new character Shani. In this installment the author made it clear who would come out on top of this situation and that's what comes full circle in installment three. Some may've been confused, but I always knew that Shani was written sort of as an underdog wins type of situation. "Good girls don't always win" I think is what she says. Maybe Zakiya really did win when you look at it. This storyline fell short though .
Monique is the new comer and Poole put in work with her story. Some people may've disliked her, but I didn't. Poole kept this story fresh with this character.
The only thing that kept this story going was Monique for me. I saw the twists coming with Adrian but not to the extent of the threesome with that one other character that I almost forgot about lol! Yeah her storyline was so blah. Her and her broke, lying husband and her down low gold digger status.
Not sure but d she will put another installment out but if so, I hope it's more satisfying. This was an okay read.

Tiffany a spoiled wife of a broke NFL player was in also in with a bi-sexual man.
Monique a overbearing mother who was in love with a man on the same team as son.
Shanice have a husband who plays basketball but he has thuggish ways who she ends up with in the end.
Zakiya set her man up to keep him from his true love in which she loses in end all while she finds god.
Adrienne has a hard knock life for a minute after her divorce from her husband in the end she marries for money.
This shit was okay but also confusing I don’t know know what it was about this story but I kept getting lost while reading about each woman. Hopefully her books don’t confuse me either.

Zakiya was the only likable character. In this book, seems karma is nonexistent. I think this book is part of a series but no thanks. I am glad to be finally done with this book. Definitely does not make me want to read more from this author.

All in all a good quick easy read. I loved traveling thru the lives of all the characters. The author made them all personable. A few typos but not enough to make me put the book down.

I almost dnf. But stuck it out.
The names didn't ring a bell. So, at first I didn't realize that I was reading the next in a series.
Zakkiya left Jabril. That was the only thing that didn't follow the formula.
Otherwise, Shanice was still chasing a married man, no shame.
Adrienne made bad life choices and, Monique?
Not sure what to make of her story line. Her son was grown. He kicked her out of the house. But, she still dumped Dele.
I'm not in that situation. But...
Tiffany was unlikable. As were two out of the other three ladies.
Zakkiya is a likable character. But, showed signs of naivete when dealing with the pastors wife.
I didn't care one way or the other what happened to the other 3.
Eh. 2.5 stars

His Last Name....oooooweee!

I have always been a lover of Daaimah's work. I always said that there was only one writer in this world that could make me stop what I was doing to read....now there are two and Daaimah is one of them. I loved this book just as much as the other two books in this three book series. If you love a good love story mixed with drama and more than a few 'oh h3ll no!' moments you should definitely check out this series. Once again, job well done Daaimah. I am dying to see what's next.

I really didn't like this book when I first started reading it but as I kept at it, I found it to be a really entertaining novel. Some parts were a little out there but the jist of the book was sometimes money will make you do a lot of things you might otherwise not have done and sometimes people use it as a tool to control someone. I felt empathy for some of the wives/girlfriends others were just a MESS! The ending was a little abrupt but overall a pretty good read!
