After a turbulent childhood, the Morgan brothers went their separate ways, leaving the family cattle ranch and their cowboy days far behind. But now, one by one, they’re being called back home to California. Have they been summoned to save the land—or to start a new legacy? Chase Morgan high-tailed it away from ranching life as soon as possible. But running a successful technology company can’t erase the memories, or secrets, of his youth. Coming home to help his Grandma Ruth may finally put some ghosts to rest—if he can just get a certain smart, beautiful houseguest out of his business. But getting her out of his head is proving even more difficult…
Determined to save the Morgan ranch, historian January Mitchell has pinned her hopes on the surprisingly rugged, surprisingly likable, and exasperatingly stubborn Chase. Surely his love of this breathtaking, mysterious land runs deep enough that he’ll once again embrace his inner cowboy. Or maybe, despite both of their skittish hearts, she’ll have to find a way to get him back in the saddle…any which way she can. “If you love cowboys—and who doesn’t—you’ll love the Morgans!” --Cora Seton, New York Times bestselling author
New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Kate Pearce was born in England in the middle of a large family of girls and quickly found that her imagination was far more interesting than real life. After acquiring a degree in history and barely escaping from the British Civil Service alive, she moved to California and then to Hawaii with her kids and her husband and set about reinventing herself as a romance writer.
She is known for both her unconventional heroes and her joy at subverting romance clichés. In her spare time she self publishes science fiction erotic romance, historical romance, and whatever else she can imagine. You can find Kate on katepearce.com.
Not a typical HEA cowboy romance, although there are definitely romantic elements and many were steamy, it is more about the history of the Morgan's and their ranch. Family dynamics fueled with some bitter conflicts, and a match-making grandmother who attempts to bring back home the 4 grandsons that left the ranch. This was my first Kate Pearce novel and I have to admit that I struggled to enjoy it in a way. The building of the romance between Chase Morgan, the oldest grandson, and January Mitchell was slow and I didn't care much one way or another. They made a good couple but they were a bit boring. I'll continue reading the series to see where it leads ... hopefully it will pick up the flow.
Many thanks to Kensington Books via Netgalley for the free review copy in exchange for my honest opinion.
I have a confession to make - I always wanted to be a cowgirl. I asked Santa for a horse every Christmas. I watched "Little House on the Prairie" religiously. I read Westerns, big ones like "The North and the South". I was jealous of all my friends who had horses. I even went through a short-lived country music phase (hides head in shame!) complete with a Tim McGraw concert and line dancing lessons! And yes, I still have the boots to prove it. Anyway, over time, I came to the conclusion that I was born into the wrong family, but, that doesn't mean a girl can't live vicariously through fictional characters, right? Exactly why I thought it might be time to read about a former cowboy-turned-computer-geek going back home to his family ranch and falling in love.
There was a lot I really liked a lot about this book. Primarily, I loved the ranch setting and the common goal of keeping it up and running and turning it into a heritage site. I also found the main characters, Chase and January, to be likable and interesting. Their chemistry was great, and the fact that they had a strong friendship building between them only made the romance sweeter. The mystery of what happened with Chase's mom, dad, and baby sister kept me reading - I just had to find out what had happened all those years ago to make Chase's family fall apart! And then there was the introduction of Chase's brother, Blue - hmmm, I could definitely do with more of him!
There were a couple of things I thought could have been improved upon. So yeah, this book was not perfect, but it was definitely enjoyable enough for me to want to pick up the next installment. And of course Chase's brother Blue is featured in that one, and he is super intriguing, so there is that, haha!
This is the first book I've read by this author and I really enjoyed it. Chase Morgan and his three brothers left home after a family tragedy split them apart. Estranged from his family, the only one Chase has kept in touch with is his grandmother and when they get together it's usually at his place in San Francisco where he runs a successful tech company with his two partners. Now, however, Ruth, his grandmother, has asked him to come home and help her sort out the ranch's finances. Chase cares nothing about the family ranch - or so he's always telling himself - and has decided the best thing to do would be to sell it. But Ruth tells him that will only happen once she's dead and he and his brothers inherit the place. Then they can do whatever they want with it. Only problem is, these same brothers aren't speaking to him at the moment.
January Mitchell is a historian who's currently staying on the ranch and helping Ruth while she writes her thesis about the area's history. Chase's arrival sparks her interest, and not just because he could be a fount of information for her. He's extremely good looking and she really enjoys spending time with him even though they don't always see eye to eye. The problem is, Chase is only going to be around for a couple of weeks and she's not looking for a fling. She went through a nasty divorce and has managed to avoid any and all contact with her ex since. The next guy she gets involved with will have to want something more than a quick roll in the hay or she's not interested. In her opinion, anything less isn't worth wasting her time.
I liked the way the author brought Chase home and little by little caused him to realize he didn't have to continue allowing the past to define his future. Yes, some of the memories he had of that time were painful but he'd stored up a wealth of good memories as well. When he finally reaches out to his brother, Blue, the two of them meet and agree to try and work out their differences. It isn't easy but Chase soon finds that working alongside his brother has its rewards too. Chase is such a good guy, honest, hard working, and will quickly admit when he's wrong and make amends. Although he and January butt heads a time or two, they're perfect for one another. When January's ex shows up in town and turns out to be Chase's security advisor, things get a little tense, adding to the appeal of the storyline. The author handled this new twist a bit differently than what I've read in the past. I liked it. Instead of the ex causing trouble and managing to create a rift between the hero and heroine, Chase and January work their way through the problem. There is a brief altercation between them but it's quickly resolved and there's none of them storming off and not speaking to each other nor do they have some huge misunderstanding that festers for several chapters before one of them finally comes to their senses.
This was just an entertaining book all the way around. The author has done her research as there is a lot about the history of the Morgan family and their background, especially since there was a town named for the family. I'm looking forward to reading Blue's story next and also learning what happens with the brothers' relationship with their father as he makes an unexpected appearance at the end. I definitely recommend this one.
Ride the horse in the direction it's goin. – Old West Proverb
Chase Morgan relishes his life in San Francisco – he is financially independent in the City by the Bay. He reluctantly returns to his childhood home when his grandmother asks for help. Chase intends to spend as little time as possible in a place which holds painful memories. Yet he needs to investigate a financial transaction on behalf of the Morgan Ranch that is not quite right. He also questions the motives of January Mitchell – a historian living with his grandmother. She gladly helps with the ranch chores – chores he should have been doing all along to ensure his grandmother can keep her beloved ranch.
January believes Ruth can save her historic ranch – and her family’s legacy – by focusing on organic farming and joining the tourist circuit. Her extended stay at Morgan Ranch enables her to complete her thesis and pay off her student loans. January has finally found a place where she feels like it is home only to have her routine – and her suggestions – questioned by the prodigal grandson. Once Chase puts on a pair of cowboy boots, he feels home again. He joins January in the ranch chores and finds himself opening his heart to January, his disjointed family, and even his family’s legacy.
Pearce delivers a heartfelt story of redemption set in the foothills of the Sierra Mountains. She delves into western legend that brings together two fated lovers where the heroine loves history and the hero loathes it. The mystery arising from the financial transaction opens a deeper wound among the Morgan family – one that I did not see coming. It sets the stage for the next books in the series for the other brothers to come to terms with the big reveal.
THE RELUCTANT COWBOY captured my attention – I did not want to put the book down. I appreciate how Pearce drew me into the story that teeters on the past glory of the ranch and the small town that struggles to survive. I look forward to reading the next books in the series. As a fan of her alter ego, Catherine Lloyd, who pens the Regency mystery series, Kurland St. Mary’s, I was thrilled to have discovered a new series from this talented author.
I received an ARC from Pearce for an impartial review. Given cowboys are not my go to heroes when choosing a romance to read, this author converted me to Western Romance!

Chase Morgan is a successful businessman in San Francisco but when he gets a letter from his Grandmother, he comes rushing back to the family ranch. But being back on the family ranch brings back memories of his difficult childhood. The last thing he wants is to save the family ranch but his grandmother Ruth has other ideas as does the historian currently living with her. January Mitchell is in love with the history of the Morgan Ranch and after hearing from Ruth how great Chase is, she just might be falling for Chase. If only she can make him realize how much he needs the Ranch and his family. This was a great start to the Morgan Ranch series. I particularly liked how Kate Pearce made the reluctant cowboy afraid of spiders, so there was bit of humor within the romance. I'm looking forward to more books in the series as the rest of Chase's family find love.
This is exactly the stereotypical cowboy romance I needed. But I also loved that the main male character had character development and wasn’t a macho “I’m gonna wrestle this cow to the ground” cowboy. He had depth and charisma and wasn’t flat. Was the writing the best thing I’ve ever read? No. But did I love to regardless? Rootin Tootin I did. The author did a great job of leaving me wanting more. What happened to the mom? Will the twins show up? Give me more! 3.5/5
The first installment in Kate Pearce's Morgan Ranch series, The Reluctant Cowboy is a sweet yet deliciously steamy novel that takes place on a California ranch that has been in the Morgan family for several generations.
With a host of unpleasant memories stemming from long ago events that tore their family apart, Chase Morgan avoids coming back to the ranch for visits. However, when his beloved Grandma Ruth needs his assistance in getting to the bottom of a puzzling financial problem, he reluctantly returns to help out. Chase is already experiencing a great deal of stress from work disagreements with his business partners who just happen to be his best friends. Unfortunately, his pessimistic attitude and need for control come into play when dealing with the situation with Ruth and they are soon on opposite sides while trying to decide the future of the ranch. Rediscovering his roots has an unexpected positive effect on him but when forced to confront the events that led to his estrangement from his brothers, will Chase continue to let the past define him and his family?
January Mitchell is dedicated to preserving history and she is rather flummoxed at Chase's disinterest in keeping the Morgan ranch in the family. She refuses to back down despite his strenuous objections, but she also knows not to push him too hard as she tries to convince him to help Ruth stay in her home. Gaining his cooperation in showing her parts of the ranch that only family members know about, January unexpectedly rekindles his love of the land. With an uncanny ability to see through a problem to the heart of the matter, her insight into the various issues Chase is grappling with is invaluable.
January and Chase are attracted to one another despite their differences and at first, it seems a romance between them would never work. Chase is very pragmatic and with a businesslike approach to romance, he completely discounts love when it comes to his relationships. January is searching for an emotional connection and she is beyond shocked at his viewpoint. When Chase proposes a friends with benefit arrangement for the duration of his time at the ranch, she refuses to even consider agreeing to his plan. However, January soon reconsiders her decision and they are soon heating up the sheets as often as they can. With mutual affection and genuine respect for each other along with a sizzling hot attraction, will January and Chase be able to keep their no strings fling from evolving into a real relationship?
Reluctant Cowboy is a captivating romance between two flawed but immensely appealing characters. The romance between them unfolds at a leisurely, but believable, pace. The storyline is engaging and the complicated family history provides depth and substance to the plot. This first installment in Kate Pearce's Morgan Ranch series is a beautifully written love story that will leave readers impatiently awaiting the release of the next book in the series.
**I received an ARC of this book from Net Galley in exchange for an honest review.**
There is something amazing when you are reading a book by an author that is new to you and realize you are just LOVING it, and you know the author has an extensive library you can delve into. This book was just like that for me. I really didn’t want to put it down.
Sometimes when I’m reading a book about a hero with a tough outer shell, it’s obvious that he’s soft on the inside. Not so with Chase. But somehow the author didn’t make him unlikeable. Even though I couldn’t figure out if there was really the soft center I was hoping for, I could see the potential for one so it made him more mysterious than unlikeable. Of course he had his moments that I would have like to knock him upside the head, but don’t we all have those moments?
The heroine, January, is all the things I like. Sweet but not a pushover, a good listener who will speak up when needed, down to earth but up for fun. She is exactly what Chase needs.
There’s a bit of a mystery in this story but it’s not the central theme. I would in no way classify this as a suspense novel. But be warned, although this story does not have a cliff hanger there is an aspect of the history of the Morgan Ranch that goes unresolved. It in no way takes away from the main story in this book and will not leave you disappointed at the end.
One thing bothered me, and it’s really quite silly that it bugged me so much. The characters seem to like to take a shower in the morning and then again BEFORE going to do the chores. I don’t know how that makes any sense. Why would you continuously shower before mucking horse stalls and feeding chickens? I warned you that it was silly of me to be so bothered, but there you have it.
As I mentioned in the first paragraph, this book made me curious and excited to read more by Kate Pearce. I’ve looked at her library of work and see that she has everything from paranormal to western to sci-fi to historical works in her repertoire. I think this is going to be an interesting journey.
I give this book 4.5 stars, rounded up to 5 since it was so engaging.
The Reluctant Cowboy is the first book in Kate Pearce's latest series, aptly named Morgan Ranch. This is my first Kate Pearce book and it was an easy read, entertaining, with well drawn characters, some surprising events and definitely a solid introduction to the members of the Morgan family. The Morgan Ranch has been a family concern for generations but only Grandma Ruth remains to keep it going and that get's harder every year. She has a foreman & ranch hands, but only a small herd running on the vast acreage. She also has a young woman, January, who is researching the area as her thesis who helps out as much as she can; Ruth has been getting letters about an overdue loan that she knows nothing about and this is the trigger she uses to lure her oldest grandson, Chase, out of Silicon Valley to "home" where he grew up with three other brothers. It's not a happy return for the business man, but his business partners demanded he take a few weeks off, so he arrives, in a hire car, looking & feeling very much out-of-place. The place holds mostly bad memories for Chase & more than 10 years away haven't eased any of those feelings.
This is a story with several layers & I thought it could be read as a stand-alone, until Chase's brother "Blue" turns up after years in the military and everything gets more complicated. Chase and January have a "friends-with-benefits" thing going on - only after Chase has checked out everyone on the ranch to solve the loan mystery! He's not slow to start investigating this matter while January pushes him to understand the prospects she sees ahead for the Ranch. Blue throws himself into working hard trying to decide what's next for himself but he baulks at reuniting with his brother. There are secrets on the Morgan Ranch and hopefully all the questions will be clear as the series continues. Will I read more by Kate Pearce - definitely, The Maverick Cowboy (Morgan Ranch, #2) will be released early 2017 and it is already on my TBR list. The Reluctant Cowboy is a must read start to what is going to be a "darn good yarn".
I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review Review for Once Upon an Alpha.
Loved this storyline !!! 5Starbook. I am going to reread this book ! ... cannot seem to get enough of the characters. I loved Ruth and her involving ways to get things done and bringing the family together ! January's love for historical research, of the town and the ranch gives really basic meaning to the storyline. ... and bringing the town and family together. Love of the land. Cowboys, and horses bring depth and reality to the unfolding events. Morgan Ranch and land have many beautiful physical things to share that enriches the story.... which stirs in the hearts of the folks on the ranch and of the town of Morgan.
Ruth wants to bring the family together by love and in her manipulating ways. Chase and January have much to do throughout for Chase's Grandmother, the Ranch, preventing forclosure, and bringing brothers the family .... and let's not for forget those wonderful Chickens. This is a great 5 Star happy story with struggling times, humour, fun, full emotional moments and mystery behind some issues. ... all leading to a hopeful happily ever after for Chase and January as they try ignore deny or ignore their sparks for each other.
I highly recommend this book... a hard to put down put book . I looking forward to reading the next book in the series.
Thanks to NetGalley and publisher for this ARC in exchange for an honest opinion. & honestly I will revisit this book ... loved the characters, storyline and land where it all takes place !!!!
Working to preserve the sprawling Morgan ranch, January sparks with Chase Morgan, newly returned to the ranch and eager to see the last of the place.
I thought Chase, with his family tragedy, and January, with her communal upbringing, had interesting backstories, but their present day conflicts weren’t as strong as I would have liked, for instance, it seemed odd/convenient, that Chase and his family hadn’t simply discussed a certain event years earlier, I mean really it seems impossible that they didn’t discuss it, and as far as conflict in the romantic relationship, it was mostly orchestrated by an ex rather than by digging into Chase and January’s issues.
Chase and January had good chemistry, I liked their supportive vibe, but as I’m often finding in recent years, it sort of felt like this couple went from antagonism to naked in a heartbeat, which isn’t generally the pacing I crave from romance novels. I have no problem with sex scenes, it just seems like post-Fifty Shades, romances are so focused on sexuality that some of the more subtle sensuality is getting lost along the way. It’s such a personal preference thing for a reader, for me, I love build up and anticipation, before having each other, I want to experience the wanting, the yearning, the pulling away when everything in their bodies screams to get closer. Prolonged tension doesn’t seem to be all that fashionable in these books anymore and I miss it, I guess I’m just not an instant-gratification-era kind of girl.
This was an awesome read and I am looking forward to reading the other stories from the Morgan Ranch. This was a new to me author and I must say I really enjoyed her writing style and the way she laid out the story and characters. It has a sexy cowboy, a nice touch of angst and family drama, and a sweet slow build romance between Chase and January. Overall an excellent book.
Chase Morgan left the Morgan Ranch and the craziness of his family behind him. Now he's being called back by his Grandma Ruth to help save the ranch. Chase has built a successful life and started a technology firm that is doing well. So yeah, he might be a bit controlling but his partners will get over it. Right?? This break might do them all some good. Going back to the ranch will be hard though. There are definitely some ghosts lingering around that need to be dealt with as well as the financial issues Grandma Ruth is facing. Arriving at the ranch and meeting January is quite a surprise and the fact that she is showing him that maybe the ranch isn't as bad as he remembers it being is also a huge surprise.
'The Reluctant Cowboy' by Kate Pearce is book one in the "Morgan Ranch" series. This is the story of Chase Morgan and January Mitchell. Chase has been fighting his past childhood that left him without a mother and really a father. Something happened to his mother then after the lost of her...his father started drinking. Chase hasn't been back 'home' in a long time and hasn't seen his brothers in years. But a letter from his Grandmother asking him to return to help her with a issue has him back where he started. Chase plans only to be there for two short weeks but once he starts helping out again around the farm time starts to slow down. Then their is the mystery of this letter talking about his Grandmother owning money on the ranch. Not to mention a Ms. January Mitchell who has been living there for six months doing historical research. But what Chase is having the hardest time is fighting his attraction to January. This book hooked you in pretty fast, I must say. I like the way January and Chase were around each other. This is a great start to a new series of Morgans! "My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read."
Pearce used some familiar themes in The Reluctant Cowboy. There are four brothers who are estranged. A father who took off after his wife and young daughter disappeared and are presumed dead. A Grandmother who is holding the ranch together and naturally a young woman who is helping around the ranch as she writes about the history of the Morgan Ranch. While the first part of the book seemed like the same old, same old it quickly got more interesting as the characters reacted to events in new ways. I loved all of the main characters. Grandma Ruth is strong and determined to keep the ranch in the family. Chase Morgan is the oldest brother and just wants to forget everything that happened with his father and the ranch. January (yes that is her name) had a very different upbringing and has worked very hard to become strong and independent. The three are a wonderful and fun mix. Throw in Blue, another Morgan brother, and the mix gets even better. I loved the book and have the next book, Blue's story, on my wish. list. I received a free copy of the book from the author in return for an honest review.
Loved the inner turmoil of this character combined with his loyalty to...well everything. He is an obvious control freak who believes the world is black and white when it comes to business decisions. When he arrives at the ranch at the request of his grandmother, his mind is made up that it's time to sell the ranch because from a business stand point it doesn't make sense.
Unlike in some books, his change wasn't immediate and instead was much more realistic. He went from hating the ranch to tolerating the ranch and eventually to calling it home. It was far from an overnight process.
January...I loved her dedication to history and her strong desire to know more. I kept feeling though that we never got the full story of what happened with her and Kevin. The reason for the divorce just didn't match the person that we saw when Kevin visited. I actually expected it to come out that he was physically abusive towards her and that was the real reason of the divorce.
Looking forward to the next book in this series as I desperately want to know what happened the mother and Rachel.
This is not your typical cowboy romance, though there are definitely romantic elements, there is also a mystery, family dynamics filled with conflict and angst, and tech nerds thrown in for good measure. Throughout the story, the hints of a family mystery were revisited, whetting the appetite for answers...which of course keeps you reading to get those answers. Though some of the mystery was cleared up, there was plenty left of it for the next installment in the series.
This book was provided by the Publisher and Netgalley, I am voluntarily providing my honest review.
This was the first book i have read from this author and i loved it. Talk about tempers that flare and lead to passion i love it. A must read for any and all romance lovers everywhere. Chase is called home when his grandmother ruth needs help with the ranch. He want her to sell the ranch but she want to keep the ranch that has been in their family for generations. Here enters January Mitchel who is somethings else in this book a woman that is not afraid to tell this head strong cowboy a thing or two about tradition and family. These two are are a match made in heaven.
I do enjoy Kate Pearce and her writing style. This was a very good start to the series. 4 brothers, separated for decades, are starting to come together to save or sell the family farm for their grandmother. This first book focuses on the eldest brother Chase, who has made his fortune in tech once he leaves the ranch. Childhood trauma, an angry brother(the rest will return in future book), a scheming granny, and a sweet heroine who was raised in a commune all come together for really sweet book.
So some of the other Kate Pearce books I've read have been all out sexy smut but this was one was a sweet and lovely romance....no threesome or bondage to be found.
Chase Morgan has returned to the family ranch because his grandmother is in trouble. She has been getting letters about missed payments on a loan that she knows nothing about and is afraid she will lose the ranch that has been in the family for generations. He has done his best to stay away from the ranch but goes to try to help. Upon his arrival most of the cattle are gone and there is a stunning woman that has him worried. She seems to be putting all kinds of ideas in his grandmother's head about keeping the farm and changing the way things have been run for generations.
I enjoyed the backstory and the turmoil that Chase goes through. His grandmother wants him to reconnect with his brothers and hopefully return to the ranch. He finds himself attracted to January, the stunning woman, and isn't sure what to do with the feelings she stirs. He also has secrets about his father and missing mother and sister.
I will recommend this book to my friends to read and can't wait to get my hands on the next book(s) in the series!
The Morgan sons all scattered after the incident with their parents. Their father began to drink and became abusive. But what really happened the night it all fell apart? There are pieces left to be discovered by the now-adult sons of William Morgan.
Chase, the oldest, has found a haven and success in Silicon Valley. When his grandmother Ruth calls him home for help with a legal matter, Chase estimates that he'll be gone for two weeks from San Francisco. He hasn't reckoned with Ruth or the woman who is researching the family history, the mine, the family, the town.
January Mitchell is working and living on the ranch and Chase is immediately taken by her manner and her beauty. There are questions still waiting for answers. When brother Blue comes home for a brief leave before beginning his new military assignment, things become more clear and then less. When a surprise guest arrives, more of the questions are answered but there are still more to come.
Great reading! I am so happy I stumbled across the first book of this series. I love a great family saga and this has it all-love, laughter, tears and a little bit if mystery and intrigue! Plus, I lived very close to this area in Northern California and it holds a lot of precious memories for me and added a familiar element to the story for me. Chase and January's journey to their HEA has some bumps along the way. But, it is truly a beautiful journey! Absolutely love Ruth! Can tell she is going to be a force to be reckoned with throughout this series! Can't wait to start the next book!
First time reading Kate Pearce and had mixed reactions. The appeal of horses and ranch life were what drew me to the book. As a horse owner/rider for many years, I enjoyed those segments, (especially the mindset of Chase's horse!) and found them very accurate. Took me a while to get drawn in but the horses and the history of the ranch were the hooks. The romance was predictable but "sweet." I was a bit thrown off track by their miscommunications to the point of re-reading several sections to see what I missed... never did figure out a couple. A light, easy read - there was enough here to interest me in locating #2 in the series, we'll see which way the scale will fall.
“I was voluntarily provided this free review copy book by the author, narrator, or publisher.” A 20-year old conflict that the resolution is being instigated by a grandmother who wants to save her home. One brother returns as a wealthy man with unresolved issues about the ranch But begins to heal, find peace and love after spending time working on the ranch. This is about two brothers so the second book should give us a conclusion to the story. Well written although a little long. Would love to listen to it on audio.
I reluctantly finished this. Tech guy returns to family ranch to help grandma out, who is having The Most Obvious Problem Ever, but none of the family has ever discussed the major event in the past that led to their estrangement. (AND - annoyingly, he has two brothers that are NEVER NAMED, just referred to as "the twins," or"your brothers.")
Good thing there's a historical preservation grad student on the ranch to provide some mediation, and her paper villain ex to provide some plot misdirection.
What happens when a type A control freak returns to the ranch he grew up on with his 3 brothers and his grandmother? He meets the commune raised historian that is working with his grandmother to change the way the ranch was run to produce high quality organic beef amongst other products.
I enjoyed their story and am eagerly anticipating the next books in the series when the rest of the boys get their HEA.
This is the first book in The Morgan Brothers Ranch series and a great introduction to the Morgan family of California. When Chase Morgan is called home to the Morgan ranch by his grandmother, he meets January Mitchell who is there writing a thesis about the history of the ranch. Both have dealt with heartache and have trust issues, but will their attraction be enough to cement a relationship?
I rate this book 3.5 stars, but couldn't bring myself to round up. The book's plot moved along primarily through dialogue, which at times felt a little choppy to me. The characters also sometimes had motivations and actions that I didn't understand, like the hero believing the ex husband instead of his lover. Wouldn't he be jealous and suspicious and be predisposed to take her side? But, the chemistry between them was top notch and kept me reading the many, imaginative scenes.
The storyline in this book was in my opinion interesting and intriguing. This is not a fast, hot and steamy story, on the contrary it goes at a steady pace and it's sweet and realistic.
I like the writing style, it's easy and has enough dialogues so even if it's not a fast story it's never boring. I also got some giggles out of it.
The characters are well written with lots of feelings but there's no overwhelming descriptions of feelings so the realism is convincing.
