Such a cute series. I love how the books are connected. Ava is a lovely little girl, and Clover is a sweetheart 💖.

As part of the summer reading program for Merriam and due to the Covid-19 aftermath, the local library offered a bunch of books to the Community Center so each child would be able to select two if they came by. As a result we ended up taking my sister and niece so she could pick-up her two books if there were any that were attractive to her and this is one that was in the offering.
The Sky Unicorn first of all is part of a series but from what I can pick-up from this reading this book does a great job in standing alone apart from the first book The Storm Dragon. The main protagonist for this book, Ava, is not the same as the one that can be found in the first book, Sophy, although Paula does introduce the first story hero as a secondary supportive character who updates the reader with a brief summary of the first book and helps Ava with her mission.
Found within this book is a very simple and easy to read text with an exciting plot, beautiful descriptives and a creative world of fantastical creatures that are so familiar yet wonderfully exotic at the same time. As a result of this combination if this series had been around when I was a child and I had been able to get my hands on it I know that this would have been one of my go-to fantasy series.
The characters are wonderfully made and given nice strong personalities that shine through in various spots throughout the story. And I just love the fact the villain's name is one of those combined surnames that you really don't heart - Fitzroy.
Sketch illustrations also intersperse throughout the pages helping the young reader to have a break as they read through. These are full of details with charming looks for both human and animal characters, especially young Clover.
All in all it was a very quick and fascinating read especially for it being a part of a junior series while I cannot wait to get my hands on the other book within this series. For those who love fantasy, strong female characters and a quick read this will be a nice fallback while I cannot wait to see how the fantastical creatures are portrayed in the other books.

This is where we parted ways from this series.
I really can't tell who the series is geared to. The cover design and UNICORN WITH A TURQUOISE TAIL would indicate that you want a young reader. 2nd grade max. But it uses words like "gamboling" to describe what the neon-haired unicorns are doing. I have a 6th grader who didn't know that word.
So the book can't be picked up and read easily by the children most easily ensnared by the cover. My 6yo also was not thrilled that the story is no longer centered on the main character from the last book, but rather introduces a new character as the lead.
I wasn't thrilled that the plot labored very slowly with a lot of unnecessary back and forth until we finally fail to fail at freeing the dang unicorn.

Loving this fun fantasy series
We meet Ava in this story and her family of performers who live on river boats. It was fun to see her world and the beautiful artwork only added to it.
Ava sees a baby Sky Unicorn trapped and helps free him and return him to his family. Unfortunately, the knight from book 1 is on the hunt for magical creatures and a man in Ava's group betrays the location of the sky unicorns.
Luckily, Sophy and her dragon friend show up to help when the baby sky unicorn is taken again. They boost his confidence so he can help himself too!
Cute adventure, and now BOTH girls are off to rescue silver dolphins 😃

This was actually the first chapter book Elsa picked out entirely on her own. I'm unicorn-skeptic (I think there's a forced overabundance of unicorn imagery in children's books these days), but this was actually a really great primer for young kids who might be interested in fantasy as a genre. Good, gentle story with magical creatures and brave little girls. We will definitely be grabbing the rest of the series from the library.

My five year old is looking this series. I like that they're fun fantasy with no mention of school (we homeschool, I avoid books that center around a classroom).
The villian isn't too over the top. My favorite stories for kids are ones where the villian is more human, less black-and-white "bad". When they can redeem themselves, change "sides" or be forgiven (Howl's Moving Castle comes to mind). In this series it's a knight that has orders from the queen to capture all magical creatures.

Number 2 in a series, full of fantasy and magic that will keep kids interested. Not necessary to have read the previous book, this works well by itself.

I liked the unicorn, and I liked when they went into the castle with the maid and the dancer; I like those friends with the necklaces. My favorite character was the baby sky unicorn. I really liked it. I hope I can read the book after this.

1.5 stars. Unexciting. Like the times when the protagonists were trying to avoid being seen? Well, they hid and they weren’t spotted. That’s all.

My daughter loved this fantasy book with flying unicorns. Adventuring in another land with magical animals is quite the imagination journey for little minds.

My 9-year-old gives this book 5 stars. It has heroic kids and dastardly, corrupt grown ups. It has flying unicorns, dancing, and daring rescue attempts. Fast-paced and intriguing, this is a great read for first to fourth graders. (First graders may enjoy it as a read aloud.)

I thought that this book was awesome. I think that Maya was very keen to help the magical animals and I'm happy because I'm sure she will protect them well. I'm happy that Sophy is looking for more people to give them a speaking stone. I knew that Maya would get a speaking stone. She truly cared about animals and was obviously willing to sacrifice herself for the aniamsl. My faviroute charcter is Clover and Mya. I like Maya because she helped Clover and his family, setting him free and taking huge risks under the sharp eye of Sir Friztroy. I reccomend this book to everyone as it is awesome and amazing.
