The official sequel to Clive Barker’s Nightbreed Director’s Cut concludes!
Following the destruction of the Nightbreed home, Boone, who is tasked with finding a new sanctuary for his people, abandons his destiny to help his girlfriend adjust to life as a monster. The Nightbreed must unite to find shelter. Little do they know that from the ashes of their catacombs, bathed in the blood of their god, an old enemy returns to purify the world from the darkness. Writer Marc Andreyko ( Batwoman ), along with artists Emmanuel Xerx Javier ( Raven Nevermore ) and Devmalya Pramanik, bring Cabal’s final journey to life. For from the ashes, a new Midian must rise.
This is the third and final volume in the Nightbreed series.
"A secret society of monsters and misfits, The Nightbreed have always been with us."
I'm not ready for my time with these monsters to be at an end! The found family, the love that was featured, and the emotion that exuded from every page made me bond with every entity featured here. The bittersweet ending was apt, even if I yearned for my time with this cast of characters to continue, the tragedies were endured, and villains ended, leading this to be another brilliant and absorbing volume.
Previous volumes were kind of a prequel, if we don't count Boone's frame story which is set during event of novella, but final volume is a direct sequel of a movie. For sure, we were all wondering what happened to Cabal and Tribes of Moon. Where did they went. We wanted to go back to new Midian and see how they're doing after the catastrophe that befell them. Alas, I'm afraid this is not what everybody was hoping for. Art direction, which was already bad, went couple of notches below. Whoever decided to go for this art direction for a Clive Barker's adaptation needs to think one more time. If it were B&W maybe it would've worked, like Dylan Dog for example, but with coloring is a big pile of mess. Deus ex machina solution at the end, fight scenes and ending were all over the top and certainly not something that Barker himself would write. Not worth a read, better to read original and wait for HBO's series to explore new adventures of Tribes of Moon.
Unlike the other two volumes, this one takes us to events after the film. I can say I didn’t enjoy it as much as the others, and it felt like kind of a rush job to wrap up the story. But still great art and concept!
If you are a fan of Nightbreed, you will probably enjoy this series. If not, this isn’t going to change your mind.
It starts out as an origin story and has the backstory to some of the characters. It was cool to see them fleshed out.
I enjoyed where the story went from there but it did leave me wanting more. There is a lot of potential for this story/universe and it would be cool to see it explored.
Took a little getting into this one as the artwork was different and the story seemed to have jumped from the previous 2. Turns out this is like a sequel to the movie which is pretty cool. It gets pretty brutal in there, but the ending was a little… so-so.
Overall though, an enjoyable series of books that fill in gaps. I need to read Cabal, properly. Had a copy for years as a kid but never picked it up. Time to change that! Also it’ll be good to read the graphic novel of Nightbreed proper.
I have always been a fan of Clive Barker movies. His works are so different from other authors. This graphic novel is an amazing work with excellent graphics. Each monster has been given a narrative so that the reader can relate to them. Somewhere the book compels us to think that people who think differently are not accepted by the society. Society always accept only those who confirm to their standards. I loved reading the book.
What was THAT? I had to check Goodreads to find out what happened between Vol 2 and Vol 3. Turns out the movie is what happened. For somebody who has never watched the movie and has just started looking into the series, that was disappointing. The coherence problems make Vol 3 anything but enjoyable and the deus ex machina ending is also a letdown. I did enjoy the art, but the story was a fail.
More fun with the tribes of the moon! Even if the deus ex machina ending in this final volume can feel a bit forced I still had a great time revisiting the strange little world that Clive Barker created and now want to try and track down the old epic/marvel comic run of "nightbreed" from the 1990s!
The third offering post Midian's fall, finds Cabal closing in on a new refuge for the Breed. Some good action, but the ending was a little weak. The art is sold comic art. Check it out.
