Having been following Candace on her blog, Yoga By Candace, I was super excited about this book. It lived up to my expectations and I am so in love with all the stories and pictures inside. Candace does any amazing job of showing off yoga poses in a "Do This, Not That" way that helps one understand correct alignments. The book weaves together Candace's story of overcoming Lyme disease and how she developed the idea of her blog and book. This was my first every yoga book I have read and it will definitely be used quite often I am sure!
Do you need to hone your yoga routine to advance your personal goals, or are you looking for inspiration for your students? Either way, this might be the book for you.
Candace Moore helps you tap into your greatness with heart, humor and a series of more than 100 yoga poses, beautifully photographed in this 400+ page book. It opens with an introduction to the author’s life, where years were stolen from her after a horrific dog bite that took away her power of mobility. After too long a period of feeling sorry for herself, she determined to conquer the negativity in her soul and change. She developed a series of commandments, one of which includes everything from “getting comfortable with getting uncomfortable” to “being a hell yeah person”. In the beginning chapters you will read everything you need to know about meditation as well as everything you need to know about pranayama. The next four chapters are devoted to Beginner, intermediate, advanced and restorative practices.
Included in each chapter are photos and detailed explanations of each pose with a section of sequences for the advanced student. The warm-up poses are highly instructional as is the 30 day program to de-stress. Key alignment points are shown for each pose to make the process more visual for the student wishing to move up to the next level. Go ahead and do it. Be a “hell yeah” person using Candace Moore’s wonderful instructional, motivational book.
There's something about Candace that just draws me in. She's young, vibrant, and beautiful, and I follow her blog somewhat haphazardly, and have done many online yoga videos with her. Her sessions are always fun, and her pacing is always what I look for -- so when I heard she had a book coming out called "Namaslay" I was excited to get my hands on it. To be honest the title put me off slightly, and many of her photographs are reminiscent of the "instagram yoga" that I have issues with; but those issues are mine and when I look past that and see the book for what it is intended - a thorough and comprehensive guide to poses and various practices - it is truly a 5 star book. Really helpful descriptions, and clear pictures of asanas that inspire me to get down and try things on the mat that scare me. Her blog-like entries in the book that give insight into her personal journey are wonderful to read, as well.
The basic meditation and breathing exercises were well-explained and easy to implement. There were a lot of personal anecdotes which I imagine most people would enjoy, but it was a bit too distracting for my style. I love the meat of this book though, the life lessons and practical ways to implement a yoga lifestyle into your everyday life.
This is the best yoga book I have seen! Educational, interesting and inspiring. I love the author's yoga videos on YouTube and was so excited to read this book. The pictures are gorgeous and I love the explanations of the poses.
Namaslay was a great addition to my yoga library! I learned a lot about the philosophy from an entry level point of view, as well as gained more confidence in completing poses. I loved the illustrations as they gave some clear tips on how to improve my practice. I highly recommend for you to read this in order to develop your yoga practice.
The only downside was her stories about her life...while sad she had lyme disease, (and that article I totally ate up and could relate to, to an extent) most of the articles were hard to relate to. She's married to a hockey player and they seem to have a lot of opportunities that us mere folks won't ever have. I found her stories hard to connect to because of that. It reminded me of "Girl Wash Your Face," type of writing. But you can't ignore she did come out of being in a terrible disease and did something with her life. And she is very intelligent, so I chose to overlook those points.
Read this book and NamaSLAY it! I didn't like the author seem to hate running. She kept bringing up that running was a punishment and that running a marathon was for "just a T-shirt." Ha, if she only knew, but I'm a runner so those comments are of my own personal feelings. Read this book regardless of those few sentences.
This is hands down the best yoga book that I have read. Candace is light hearted and down to earth, but she is extremely knowledgeable. Not only does she break down each posture and set-up, she does it in simple layman's terminology. She also goes over breathing techniques, yoga props, and restorative yoga; she even provides you with numerous vinyasas, ranging from beginner level to difficult. I have been practicing yoga on a regular basis for two years and I thought I knew a lot, but I have learned so much from this book! I even tried difficult poses that I thought were way beyond my experience level simply because Candance is so encouraging. I have literally read this book from cover to cover and was disappointed when there was nothing else to read. I hope she comes out with another yoga-related book!
I have followed Yoga By Candace on YouTube for a few years now. She was always my go to for yoga videos and her style just resonates with me. I finally got around to reading this book and I'm so glad that I did! This book is the best, scratch that, ONLY book out there that explains yoga in terms that the no non-yogi can understand and that makes EVERYONE feel accepted by the yoga community. Namaslay is beautifully organized with poses, explainations of what each pose stretches, sequences, and even a few 30 day yoga guides. She also gives little snippets of her life and struggles. She's raw and unconcerned during her reminiscing of her darkest times.
This book should be in everyone's house, my husband is going to try the 30 days yoga for back pain and chest opening. Thanks Candace for this awesome book!
Namaslay is a memoir combined yoga encyclopedia. I follow Candace on Instagram, so read a few of the diary style entries, but I’m honestly more interested in the asana part of this book. As a visual learner, I really appreciate her diagrams of individual poses, and I find the pose blurbs refreshing. She described one pose (camel?) as making her feel “stabby,” and it was just such a relatable comment that I laughed out loud, but also felt a little less crazy for certain poses invoking feelings of anger and/or frustration. The sequences at the back of the book are nice, but I would have liked more depth on the “why” of her sequencing, which, I suppose, would be a different book. Her emphasis on restorative yoga encouraged me to take another look at “slow” yoga, and it’s now a more frequent part of my practice, so I’m grateful for that, and that is worth the read, right there.
Pleasantly surprised. I was not familiar with the author and her IG or YouTube channel before reading this book. I actually thought this would be a fluff book without much substance and a bunch of good looking influncer-type photos. This book is actually full of really useful information for the at-home yoga practitioner. Photographs of poses with detailed explanations and labels for proper alignment are super helpful. I enjoyed the personal stories woven throughout and found her writing style super accessible. I have to admit, I judged a book by it's cover (and title) and I was wrong 😅 I originally took it out from my public library, but am going to buy it to have at home for ongoing reference for my personal yoga practice.
I hadn't heard of Candace Moore before this book, but now I will definitely check out her blog/instagram, because I loved this book- it was very down to earth and real and the yoga poses are given with simple but effective cues. I also really enjoyed reading about her own personal journey with lyme disease and her struggle to get where she is today. Very inspiring! I just wish it wasn't $45 because I really want to own this book (I borrowed it from the library).
This isn't a great work of drama or anything, but it's the best, most accessible yoga practice book I've found, and the kind of thing I want to have on my bookshelf to go back to. The pose explanations are excellent, and the narrative threaded throughout is very compelling. Yes, it can be overly millennial at points, but I also found that I really liked Candace for being a normal person. I would absolutely want to be her friend or her student.
Thankful for a book that shows the poses in more detail than most books do. I would still have preferred more but this is still a great base and it's nice to have a reference to go back to for when I am searching for a specific type of pose. One day, maybe, I'll get a chance to go on one of Candace's retreats.
I laughed in some places. I cried in some places. I felt so much from this. It had the perfect balance of memoir, yoga practice and explanation, and overall story. I learned so much from this and closed the back cover feeling better about myself and life. It was a great experience.
I free I got a lot out of the yoga information. Part of the book is her biography and the other part of it is a how to for yoga. The biography parts seemed very dramatic but if you can get pass that she gives really good descriptions on the poses and what not to do.
I LOVE this book! Candace’s story is sad, inspiring, and uplifting...all at the same time! Her breakdown of poses is spot on and so helpful. This is a book that I will refer back to and re-read for years to come!
I hadn't heard of Candace before picking up this book. I just wanted a guide that could break down poses for me and teach me more about yoga. This book was definitely helpful with that. I would 100% recommend it to any other beginner yogis out there.
Lots of photos with good cues. I liked the "be a yes person" vibe - don't hold back from trying something new out of fear. That said, I didn't relate much to her personal story shared throughout the book and got much more out of the straightforward yoga explanations and tips.
It’s definitely Candace style, open, kind, and passionate. The chapters are written as a blog/article and less like a book, but the analysis of poses and yoga itself earn this book four stars.
I liked this book is was good and it seemed like you were with her on her journey. I read it in my kindle app I'm going to get the physical book and read it again
Fab book about ones women's fight to regain her health and accomplish what she wanted to do with detailed asanas mixed in. Can't wait to try out the 30 day challenges.
