Angels on Earth: Inspiring Real-Life Stories of Fate, Friendship, and the Power of Kindness

Rate this book
“This shining book gives us story after story reminding us that God is always near.” —Roma Downey

“Filled with narratives about people whose lives have been changed forever by simple acts of kindness, Angels on Earth is inspiring, entertaining, and immensely readable.” —Christina Baker Kline, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Orphan Train

From the #1 New York Times and international bestselling authors of An Invisible Thread comes a heartwarming and inspiring book about the incredible impact that acts of kindness from strangers can have on the world around us.

One day in 1986, Laura Schroff, a busy ad sales executive, passed an eleven-year-old boy panhandling on the street. She stopped and offered to take him to McDonald’s for lunch. Twenty years later, at Laura’s fiftieth birthday party, Maurice Mayzck gave a toast, thanking Laura for her act of kindness, which ended up changing the course of his life. In that toast, Maurice said that when Laura stopped on that busy street corner all those years ago, God had sent him an angel.

Laura’s invisible thread journey has deepened her belief that angels—divine and otherwise—are all around us. After An Invisible Thread was published in 2011, readers from around the country and world began sharing with Laura their own stories about how chance encounters with strangers have changed their lives. From a woman who saved a life simply by buying someone a book, to a financier who gave a stranger the greatest gift of all, to a teacher who chose a hug over discipline and changed a lost boy’s future— Angels on Earth will introduce a series of remarkable people whose invisible thread stories will move, surprise, and inspire readers. Angels on Earth sheds light on how each of us can live happier, more purposeful lives through sharing acts of kindness.

This book is no quick-sale run-off.

It’s a Real Book about Real People.

Laura Schroff KNOWS real people. Because she IS one.

A GR author, her first book, Invisible Thread, was a runaway hit on the New York Times bestseller list. That one’s about a New Yorker who befriends - and then carefully MENTORS - a poor Manhattan kid.

That book Warmed the Wary Hearts of many a New Yorker.

And it’s all True.

Because Laura was the Angel who helped that kid.

And so, now, here she’s written a book about many Other angels - faces in the crowds of our cities to us, but plain folks who’re slowly and patiently trying to make the world A BETTER PLACE.

You know, I’ve known quite a few angels in my long life...

When I was seven, my brother and I would play pick-up hockey with a friend on the asphalt street outside our house. Especially when the NHL playoffs got near. We’d pick our fave team and pretend to be one of those pros.

Well, those scrums were scrappy.

And after a game we’d get mighty thirsty.

So we’d head off to the corner store, a lengthy fifteen minute walk. I for my Honee-Orange, my brother for a Coke, and our friend Ricky quite often got a Swiss Cream Soda. But as we walked, the feisty talk continued.

In fact, it got a bit brutal.

You see, I was quite overweight. And kids like that get teased. There was pushing and shoving. I got beat up - inside.

So when, close to the store, I noticed a friendly woman beating rugs on her porch as I, downcast, trailed the other kids, she suddenly and serendipitously asked me to come into her home for a bit.

She sat me down in her cozy kitchen and offered me a bowl of the rice pudding she’d just whipped up. I looked up to her wall, and there was that famous lithograph of the Lord showing His Sacred Heart, looking down at me.

I felt wonderful.

I don’t think such an obvious angel as that kind lady has ever given me such an incredible lift in the 63 years since...

So, when I read Laura’s book I KNEW the angels she writes about.

You see, they’ve always been around us, even when we’re too busy to notice -

But they’re REALLY THERE:

And they’re ALL Hand-Picked and Heaven-Sent...

Each and every one -

Each and every time.

This book is the perfect book if you need to feel good about the work or yourself! I love the way Laura Schroff has taken "life" stories and showed the reader how we are connected and can be an Angel for someone else we know, or do not know. Each story had a follow- up to make the reader understand the lesson we are to learn.
I will certainly give copies to people I know as well as share with others I may not really know.
"Each person has the ability to make a difference in someone else's life" and WE must always be receptive to the Angels who pass by our own journeys each day.. Keep your eyes and heart open!
Wonderful book!
I requested and received this book from net galley and read and reviewed, honestly.

A collection of 30 brief stories of real people who reached beyond their comfortable routines and chose to make a difference in someone else's life, discovering in the process that their own lives were impacted in an even greater way. Included in this collection is the story of a stranger who bought groceries for a needy family, a seventeen year old who was kicked out of her house and into the snowy weather for no reason and nowhere to go, a four year old who just wanted to play with the fun kids he had heard in a neighbor's backyard, a man in a bookstore who just found out via telephone that he had been evicted and had nowhere to go, a stranger who donated white blood cells to a terminally ill patient, a little boy who sold tacos for his mother so the family could survive, a veteran's widow who became homeless but was saved by a stranger, a teenager who gave away her mall spending money to a foreign child in need of education, and many, many more inspirational stories. My favorite of them all is about a thirtysomething woman who put up a fence to keep the neighborhood kids out of her yard, but eventually let down her walls to help one neighboorhood kid in need:

"'It was his shoes,' Monique recalls. 'I'd seen the boy before, and he always had on the same pair of black and orange Nike sneakers. And when he came up to me, I could see his big toes poking out of the sneakers. I could see the soles were worn through. He was even walking funny. It made me think, 'This boy could use a friend.'

Monique would later learn that James, who was tall for his age but also scrawny, was routinely beat up and mocked because of his old shoes and dirty clothes.

The next day, James was back in front of her garden, asking if he could help. He became her regular helper, and her friend. One day, instead of gardening, Monique took him to the local Target and had him pick out a pair of shoes. 'His old ones were size two,' she says. 'When we fitted him for new ones, they were size five.'"

With 30 stories in all, this makes for a great daily reader for about a month, and it is an excellent way to start each day, because it prepares your mind and your heart to look for opportunities to do something special for someone who may cross your path today.

Inspirational

If you are going to read only one book in 2017, make it Laura Schroff's "Angels on Earth".

"Angels" is a collection of inspirational "God moments" stories accumulated over a five year period while she traveled the country telling her own story and promoting her first book "An Invisible Thread".

These stories will warm your heart, make you laugh, smile and cry. Hopefully they will also inspire you to be more kind and open to the possibilities of heaven on earth. We are all connected and the author weaves a compelling narrative through her journey of discovery.

Highly recommend.

There's 30 short stories about kindness and angels(duh, not in the traditional sense - celestial beings with beautiful fluffy wings, NO, not those kinds of angels)compiled together between the covers of this book. That's maybe a few too many similar stories about these angels but the author does definitely get her point across.
I think she was just trying to prove her point that each of us have our moments of being capable of being one of these "angels" in other people's lives at just the right TIME. She also wrote a previous book called "An Invisible Thread". She chose the title of that book because of a very unlikely friendship that grew between herself and a homeless boy many, many years ago. Their friendship has endured for something like 30 years .... "An Invisible Thread" is actually from an ancient Chinese proverb: An invisible thread connects those who are destined to meet, regardless of TIME, PLACE, or CIRCUMSTANCE. The thread may stretch or tangle, but it will never break.
This book, Angels on Earth just illustrates all of the individuals who have recognized the angels in their lives and they've shared their stories with the author.
Sometimes one tiny, more or less not fully thought out moment, a small gesture of kindness, a meaningful gift of precious time or an actual physical gift shared between two souls can have a profound change on each of their lives. An invisible thread - larger than those 2 souls, steering them into each other's paths, pulling them together for a reason.
I don't consider this book "religious" and it's not a "self-help" book either. The author simply brought a bunch of these 'REAL' stories together to demonstrate how we're really all here to help each other. In each of our lifetimes, we will have been responsible for helping and looking after a certain amount of people, our people.
In different religions and traditions, angels are assigned different roles. We have different roles to play with those we meet, maybe we're protectors, or messengers or guides ... sometimes we don't have a name for the unlikely connection that we forge with someone unexpected.
I think there's a longing in all of us to have a meaningful, authentic or genuine connection with someone in our lives.
Kindness and connectedness, they go together. Sometimes we just have to let someone know we care about them. Give them our time and attention. There's a beautiful peacefulness to that and it just feels right.
As human beings, I think we're all fundamentally kind but, it's just that a lot of things end up interfering with that along the way so it's nice when someone can restore, put things back on the right track. This seems like the purpose of the book I think.
Good book. I liked it but it was a little long-winded even for me. Solid 3 stars maybe even 3½ in my opinion.

Thank you to NetGalley and Howard Books for the e-ARC in exchange for my honest review. This book inspired me when I was feeling down. Perfect read for that. The author provides anecdotes about how we might be connected to angels on earth, in many different ways. I ended up getting a hard copy of this book, so that I might share it when someone needs it. I try to be kind, and this book confirmed for me that I'm on the right path.

“Angels on Earth” is a collection of 30 stories about kindness, yesness, outwardness, awareness, uniqueness, and connectedness. It is an outgrowth of Schroff’s 5-year journey since publishing “An Invisible Thread” about her unexpected connection with Maurice, and how their friendship has changed her life. The book challenges us to recognize and honor the invisible connections in our lives, and is “a guide to appreciating the ways you can be an angel on earth.”

It is inspiring book of stories of kindness and fate. How people's lives change through random acts or events for the better but are they random or threads of kindness that echo through their lives forever?

This book is an uplifting read. I recommend this book.

I received this book for free from Goodreads. This book was on my night table and it was the one I read before turning out the lights. It uplifted my spirit and made me happy that there are good people among us. It made me take a better look around my own world and ask myself how I could do better!

An inspiring collection of stories embracing the power of kindness. This book will really get you looking at life from a different perspective. The book was very interesting and engaging at times, but at other times I felt the author spent too much time on details, leaving nothing to the imagination of the reader. Overall it is worth reading.

I really enjoyed this book. It is a collection of numerous stories us people turning away from selfishness, anger, and hurt, and giving a little piece of themselves to others. In our society it is so easy to see the bad, and be apprehensive towards helping others. This book shows how taking a chance and giving even a little to our fellow humans can impact in really big ways.

Great stories but somehow not as satisfying as it might be if there were some how to ideas. Like how do we tune in to and pay attention to these promptings.

Angels on Earth Inspiring Stories of Fate, Friendship, and the Power of Connections ,by Laura Schroff, Alex Tresniowski and published last October by Howard Books is the real story of a beautiful magical meeting.

I was firstly intrigued by the title.
I have in fact a long subscription with Angels on Earth by Guideposts thanks to my Memphis aunt Bobbie and I appreciate so badly. Plus: I do believe in angels.

Well I can tell you that this book is more than what you will wait! It's plenty of great humanity, kindness, it's moving, while you will read this book you will think a lot at the power of solidarity, good heart, generosity able to make the difference in the existence of less lucky people.

For Laura Schroff, the author of the book everything started in 1986. We are in NYC and a successful, busy ad sales executive lady as everyday walks all frenetic the way for going to work, when she is stopped by Maurice a 10 years old boy asking for some money because "I am hungry." Laura continues her walk. Oh come on: she meets a lot of people like this homeless boy after all everyday and she never stops, but then...The wind changed.

Maybe it was the words I am hungry, maybe the age of that boy, maybe it was destiny, she decides to turn on and to talk to this boy. She didn't offer him money but instead she offered him the possibility of eating with her at lunch at a close McDonald's.

Laura will discover that Maurice didn't eat from two days that he lived at just two blocks from her but not in a comfy house like her but in a place not great for a boy.

Since there Laura will spend a lot of time with Maurice and her experience became a NYT bestselling book called: An Invisible Thread.

Laura thinks that most of us are Angels on Earth. When we meet someone and we change in better his/her destiny, when we are helpful in particular in desperate condition as for example the story of the man and the penniless boy that you will find in the book, when we grow up children that are not ours but then later will be loved as if they would be ours.

There are many ways for being real good people in this world. We must just want to become different people, less selfish, less blind to the necessities of our neighbors, and we must also understand that we are not strangers but friends.

This new books of stories of other people necessary because Laura after the publication of the book started to receive a lot of letters, e-mails and calls of people with same or similar experiences. And so: why not tell them to a largest public? Sharing goodness create other goodness and world can just become a better place where to live in.

I highly suggest this book to everyone!!!

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book of inspirational stories each relating how one person, through a small act at no great cost (if any) to him/herself, changed the life of another. It reinforces my life-long belief we are all connected, no matter our race, nationality, beliefs, gender, or status, and that kindness does indeed matter and make a difference.

The book is broken into seven sections: Kindness, Yesness, Outwardness, Awareness, Uniqueness, Clearness & Connectedness. Each contains uplifting stories.

Some of my favorite quotes from the book are:
" Whenever there is a human being there is an opportunity for kindness." The philosopher Seneca

"Sometimes the problems in our lives and in the world seem so daunting, we begin to think there's nothing we can do to make any real difference - but there is always something we can do. It may not be a big thing, and it may not make a huge difference - but each and every one of us is capable of positively impacting the world around us in our own unique way." author Laura Schroff

This book reminds us that a single act of kindness can change someone's life, even if we don't know it. We rarely understand the ripple effects of our actions, so take every opportunity to be kind.

Many thanks to NetGalley and Howard Books for allowing me to read and review this thoughtful book.

This book narrates short stories of how people have helped other people--thus, becoming "angels on earth". The stories were interesting, but I was not sure when I bought the book if it was about heavenly angels. Laura never mentions a believe in God or a leading from Him. She mentions her mother being in heaven and guiding her from there. When explaining how she thinks people receive guidance to show an act of kindness, she says this on pg 168: "These signs can take many forms, which we already recognize. They can be a gut instinct. They can be intuition. They can be a voice in our head. A hunch, an urge, a premonition. A subconscious jab in the ribs. I believe we receive cues from the universe that pave the way for compassionate action." I am grateful for people that really reach out to those in need.

This is a book that was given by one of my favorite 'invisible thread' people. Never did I think I would have and read this book.

I prefer to read this book right before I go to bed because it can remind me to be more grateful through whatever days I got.

I remember my convo with a friend, two days ago. We talked about how he felt lately receiving bad news from his surrounding. For him, lousy stories are easy to find, nowadays. I couldn't agree more, but I told him not to receive those bad vibes. We have power over ourselves.

By reading this book, I help myself not to consume negativity. I learnt to take care of my own heart, cover my sanity with pure intention. This is how I have power over me. I got many stories from people out there who barely knew each other but did their best to share kindness.

Thank you. Ms. Laura.
Kindness is contagious.
