Eyes: Look, there's a new book by The Awkward Yeti.
Heart: Buy it. NOW!
Brain: Calm down, Heart. The book isn't released yet.
Heart: So what? Let's request an ARC. You can be really dumb sometimes, Brain!
*Receives an Advance Review Copy*
Heart: I love Andrews McMeel Publishing! They've approved all our ARC requests so far. Let's start reading now.
Gut: I'm pretty sure the title is misleading. There isn't going to be a lot about me.
Heart: Doesn't matter. Let's read.
Gut: There is going to be a lot of stuff recycled from the website, with just a few new ones.
Brain: I second that. We have some chores to do. We can read it tomorrow.
Heart: It doesn't matter if we've read most of it before. We love The Awkward Yeti. Wouldn't hurt to reread.
Brain: Fine, we know what happens when we don't let Heart indulge.
*Reads the whole book in a sitting*
Gut & Brain: Told you
Heart: Well, it was still good.
Brain: Agreed.
Heart: Alright, we should browse and read more awkward yeti comics. We are definitely getting a me plushie. Also, a tongue with pizza plushie. Maybe even the gallbladder one, it is so cute. Oh, and we should get a coffee mug where Brain and I are featured.
Brain: Let's focus on the review first. That's what we were given the book for, an honest review.
Heart: Alright. Should we give this 3 stars or 5 stars?
Brain: Well, since we already read most of it online, it felt like a 3 star, but to a new reader it would be 5 stars. We did love all the cartoon when we first read them. So, 4 stars maybe.
Heart: That's settled. Browse now. I need that coffee mug.
Brain: Hang on, let's assess our ranking of Awkward Yeti.
Heart: It's on the number one spot of webcomics for me now.
Brain: That's what you say about all books right after you read them. Have you forgotten about Sarah's Scribbles?
Heart: True, I do love Adulthood is a Myth. The uterus is so cute. How come Yeti doesn't draw any uterus, I wonder?
Brain: Because Yeti is male and doesn't have one.
Heart: Ah, that's right, I forgot. I still like the Yeti. I guess The Awkward Yeti and Sarah's Scribbles are tied up in my number one spot for webcomics.
Stomach: Hello! I've been mumbling for an hour now and no one noticed. You're all so much into that book that you've forgotten to feed me. What's more, you're having some pointless conversation instead of writing a review. You all better wrap it up soon.
Brain & Heart: Aye, Aye, Captain!

Oh! I love Heart and Brain!!!

I met this strip a few time ago, thanks to this image:

Yeah, i know that my heart and my brain didn’t fight because both of them like reading, but i honestly get excited by this strip that look so funny and it was as great as it looks

In this book we can see so many strips about very different themes, but mostly about food, the tongue and the stomach are part of the main characters here. I must be honest i try to eat healty and, some times, i fail miserably, also happen this to me when i exercise (Good Lord, i hate exercise) and i know that a little time ago i said that i’m getting a Little boring of the strip that try to made funny usual things but i feel that this one is so good and make an effort to be different from so many others around internet that is just fair give it a try.

I’m gonna let here some of the ones i enjoy the most:

With a title saying 'Gut Instincts' and a cover full of guts you would expect MANY jokes and cartoons about/with guts.

Well, I truth it's more about Heart and Brain than the new group of characters. Heart and Brain continue with their daily battles and, if you are lucky, you meet Tongue, Stomach, Sweet Tooth, Guts, Gallbladder, Kidney, Bladder, Liver, Lungs... alongside. I would have liked to see more of them all, I feel they weren't sufficiently exploited. I hoped for more of 'guts' and less of 'heart and brain'.

If you have read Heart and Brain: An Awkward Yeti Collection, you already know what to expect. This installment goes very much along the same lines. Simple cartoons about deceptively superficial matters and, mostly, very spot-on.

Exercise:

The struggle between Eyes, Tongue, Sweet Tooth, Nails, Stomach, Brain and Heart...

Some heart-warming messages:

Truest thing ever said:

Cute Little Gallbladder and Liver are among my favorites:

Oh, how I love this web comic! And the collection includes even more great stuff. Heart and Brain are kind of like the Pinky and the Brain of the body: Heart is the playful, silly one and Brain is the rational worrier. Together, they star in funny, yet poignant, comics about every day life. It’s a great escape, especially if something big and worrisome has been stressing you out. (Like, say, 2016?)

Oh goodness. A serendipitous find in the library, these three books... never would have seen them if I relied entirely on the hold system.

Brain on the computer, Heart hanging out preventing Brain from getting anything done.

H: Is the world getting worse?
B: Worse? (closes computer) I don't know. It has never been all that great. But one thing is consistent.
H: What?
B: No matter how many BAD people there are, or how powerful they get, there are always more GOOD people. People who, at the very least, WANT to do good in the world. Unfortunately, we often disagree on what "good" means, and the bad people take advantage of that, creating divides between people with good intentions.
H: That ain't right.
B: It ain't, Heart. It totally ain't.

(But more people need to learn the truth of it, and stop vilifying their neighbors of the other political party....)

Heart and Brain hanging out on the couch with a snack (no remote in sight).

B: We haven't gotten a single thing done today. Maybe we should turn the TV off.
H: Maybe it's you that needs to be turned off.

(More and more of my days are like this. My brain creates more and more busywork....)

Fun and simplistic.
I was actually disappointed that in his second collection that I'm reading now he didn't include gut, stomach, kidney and the rest of the organs

A completely accurate -at times preachy-description of the human body. I loved all the single panel comics but ended up wishing for more screen time for gallbladder...

I'm in awe of Nick Seluk's ability to personify internal organs. He's able to set up situations that everyone can relate to, but from a perspective that's radically unfamiliar. Waking up in the wee hours of the morning to go to the bathroom takes on a whole new life when you see Bladder insistently poking Lars, the titular Yeti, and prying his eyelids open. Seluk's inventiveness seemingly knows no bounds. This book is, if anything, even more enjoyable than the previous Heart and Brain collection. Recommended!

If you have seen Heart and Brain online, then you know what you are getting from this second collection of the online cartoon.

Here are some examples of what you will find inside:

Like any collection, if you know and love the comics, then you must have it. If you don't know them, you might want to read them online first, and the decide. This was a fine collection with a few laughs. Not my favorite online comic, but it might be someones.

I knew from this comic because I had seen some strips of it on facebook, so I gave it a go. I have to say that it has very funny little stories, but it also has some boring ones. I guess that the fact of reading so much about more or less the same thing (the dichotomy between heart and brain) can get boring after a while. In this regard, I find it great that the author also gets other organs to appear, like the tongue, estomac, eyes, lungs... and when they appear they provide a funny twist on the story.

'Heart and Brain: Gut Instincts' by Nick Seluk is an Awkward Yeti collection. I love this comic strip for its humor and wise insight into how we humans work.

The comic strip is primarily Heart and Brain, but this time around they are joined by other members of the human body. We have tongue wanting to eat anything, while stomach complains about being full. Throughout, irritable bowels shows up to voice its complaint. Mainly, Heart wants what it wants now, and Brain wants to be productive and pragmatic.

This is a really funny and insightful collection. How many times have I wanted that bowl of ice cream only to have my stomach complain about it later, and the war between my own heart and brain is as real as it is portrayed here (although perhaps with less butterflies). This is a funny collection of over 60 comic strips.

I received a review copy of this graphic novel from Andrews McMeel Publishing and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this graphic novel.

Heart and Brain: Gut Instincts: An Awkward Yeti Collection

I Picked Up This Book Because: Looked entertaining.

The Story:

It was entertaining. Heart is wild and a dreamer, Brain is much more practical and they obviously go through some trials trying to get along. This surprised me on the introspection inspiration these drawings lead to, I was kinda just expecting silly fun. It did go on a bit long for my tastes but maybe that’s because I digested it so fast.

What I realized after reading my second Heart and Brain book is that I enjoy specific comics but I don’t love reading the entire books in one shot as a whole. Each comic is witty and amusing but only on an individual basis. As a whole they begin to blend together and become kind of meh. I definitely enjoyed the fact that the other organs made appearances in this book. It created some variety within the boom. Plus they added some additional humor with each of their specific quirks.

I did not enjoy this one as much as some of the others. While they are still funny, the rest of the characters are just not my favorite.
This comic remains clean and cute in a world of nasty comics though, which is awesome!
