Ghosts and Legends of Lake Champlain

Rate this book
The author of Haunted Burlington shares Lake Champlain’s chilling history—from swashbuckling spirits to Champ, “North America’s Loch Ness Monster.”   Lake Champlain is located between New York’s majestic Adirondacks and Vermont’s famed Green Mountains. Yet despite the beauty of this region, it has been the site of dark and mysterious events; it is not surprising that some spirits linger in this otherwise tranquil place. Fort Ticonderoga saw some of early America’s bloodiest battles, and American, French and British ghosts still stand guard. A spirit walks the halls of SUNY Plattsburgh, even after his original haunt burned in 1929. Champlain’s islands—Stave, Crab, Valcour and Garden—all host otherworldly inhabitants, and unidentified creatures and objects have made appearances on the water, in the sky and in the forests surrounding the lake. Join Burlington’s Thea Lewis as she explores the ghosts and legends that haunt Lake Champlain.   Includes photos!   “For Lewis, a gifted storyteller, a good story makes a haunted place all the more compelling.” —Happy Vermont

I started this book while visiting Burlington and the Lake Champlain area, and now that I finished the book, I want to go back!

Thea is a wonderful story teller. Just like another reviewer said, I found this book way to short. If you ever get a chance to come to Burlington, Vermont, and especially in the fall, don't miss Thea's Ghost Walk tour in downtown Burlington. She tells a number of these stories on her walk, and in much more detail. (I live in Burlington, and can't wait to go out on it again this year!) It's an easy read that captures your imagination when you pick it up. A must read, especially if you want to know more about the Lake Champlain area.

See, this is what a good collection of ghost stories should be. Lewis works in Champ and a UFo sighting as well. It is mostly, though not entirely, the US side of Lake Champlin, not surprising because this is part of the Haunted America series While Lewis is ghost tour in Burlingon (and I would go on her tour without question), she includes many stories from outside her own stomping grounds. Her love for the area also comes across quite well.

The Queen City and surrounding areas

Because we live close to Burlington ive heard some of these stories and know most of the places. I always thought I'd. Take my daughter on a ghost walk of the queen city, but unfortunately she became one of these spirits before we did it

Giving only 4 stars because some of the stories were missing dates/time periods that I had to look up to get better context. Thea will put what war it was during, but not the actual dates or time period, and I don’t have the type of memory to know off the top of my head.

Clearly, Thea Lewis is a history buff, I just found myself wanting more....the book was way too short.
