I have read so many books that are supposed to be romance and ended up being closer to smut so imagine my surprise when I read Up Against the Wall which is promoted as an Erotic Novella and it had more story than some so-called romance books.
This is my first book by Clara Fox and I don't know what to think of it. There were some very steamy scenes, but they were not many and the story focused more on Shelby's PTSD. I know we are not supposed to judge, but to me, it seemed that Shelby's reaction to the situation was a little extreme. A lot of things happen and while I want to talk about them to explain my feelings, I can't because it will spoil the story and it's not long enough, to begin with.
I would have liked for this book to be a little longer because not only did Shelby need more therapy, but also that her relationship with Devin needed more exploration.
On the bright side, I kinda liked the book and even though I found some parts extreme I wouldn't not recommend it.
When Shelby and Devin are brought together thanks to a terrible incident she suffered, it's the beginning of an erotic wakening for the two of them. What follows is sensual and sweet. There's not a ton of depth here, but lots of heat, and Devin is a sweetheart. So if you are looking for a full-rounded and developed love story, look elsewhere. If you are looking for something short, hot and sexy, this is just the novella for you.
It’s a short erotica (romance, sortish?) novella so if you’re looking for depth, an actual plot, and interesting characters don’t get your hopes up. It was a quick, easy read and overall meh.
I was a bit disappointed with this story sadly. I tried so hard to get into the story, but for me, it was a bit all over the place. When I heard it was a Novella, I was thinking by the cover and title, we were going to have a quick tryst. A hot love affair. Especially if there is a sexy cop involved. But that is all from my own imagination.
The story does not have a great story line. The drama was a bit too dramatic for me because it was not needed. I get the PTSD message and I take that seriously. But I was waiting where it would fit in. At the end we get an unexpected surprise and I am not sure why it went where it went.
I didn't feel any chemistry and I rushed through the story as fast as I could just to get to the end. It was not my cup of tea and I did not feel it was well organized. It was jumping all over the place.
Shelby is a woman who is focused on her career when a crime is committed against her which leaves her feeling very shaken. Devon is the police office who came to her rescue who puts his job above all else.
They never expected to see each other again but fate keeps throwing them together. He is there for her as she tries to deal with the aftermath of the attack and along the way they may just realize that there is more to life than their careers.
This is a short novella. It does have triggers of being held captive, and PTSD references. Shelby McBride is a 26 year old Medical Quality Assurance Professional and sometimes working 90 hours a week isn’t enough to keep her occupied.
Devin Bridges, a 27 year old Police Officer who picks up every extra shift available, often working 7 days a week.
Devin hears cries of help one night while he is on duty. He goes to investigate. He finds Shelby being accosted by a man while she was walking alone to the subway station. Shelby doesn't do well after she was attacked. She can't sleep, she's always super jumpy. Nothing seems to help. Although she has seen Devin around, and being around him, she realizes that he helps calm her. She's not sure if it is his demeanor, or if it's because he is a police officer.
Devin and Shelby go out and realize they hit it off, and he can't stop thinking of her, and she can't stop thinking of him. Even though they are both workaholic's they want to try to be together.
I did receive a free ARC copy of this book. I am freely leaving an honest review.
Up against the wall is a quick read about 2 workaholics in Shelby and Devin who are brought together when Shelby is the target of a mugger and Devin is the police officer who happens to be around to hear her scream and comes to assist. It is a likeable story line and the characters are both strong. Beautifully written with lots happening and the chemistry between Shelby and Devin is through the roof. Clara Fox is a new author to me and this book is quite good. I will most definitely be reading more from her in the future.
I received an arc copy through bookfunnel and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
Up Against the Wall is a short but super hot read that won't take you long to finish, but keep the fan on high. Shelby works very long hours as she's a workaholic so she doesn't make time for romance. She meets the male workaholic version, Devin, when she's mugged & he's the cop who gets there first to help. From there on, they start to see each other with super hot sexy times that kept me sweating for real as their connection is palpable. I really liked them & would beg for more of them in a full length book in the future (hint hint Clara Fox) because I definitely want more badly. So, that's all from me, just hit those one click buttons to decide for yourselves! HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
I bought this novella at a convention a few years back looking for a quick steamy read.
While it did have a few steamy scenes, it mostly focused on Shelby’s PTSD. Which wouldn’t be a problem. I’m up for a good storyline anyway.
What bothered me was that the situation was not believable at times. It seems like the whole relationship was moving way too fast, Shelby was way too medicated and overall had a strange vibe.
It was enjoyable, but would have done better with a longer novel and more time.
A just ok read. I don't know a lot about PTSD but what Shelby was suffering seemed quite extreme for what happened to her, but that may be the way PTSD hits you. The scene at the end on Shelby and Devins return home from the psychiatrists seemed to just come out of nowhere. It was as if the writer suddenly remembered the books title and had to fit in that scene before the book ended therefore making the title make sense, regardless of the fact it really wasn't an appropriate moment for it.
Shelby and Devin are both workaholics. Neither have time for a relationship. Devin is a police officer who happens to hear Shelby scream when she is being mugged.. He stops the mugger and helps Shelby get medical assistance. He is drawn to her though and the more they see each other the more they both realize they can't keep working the way they do and have no personal life.. As the nightmares get worse for Shelby can Devin help her?
I had been looking forward to reading this one as the blurb sounded very interesting but it was just not my thing. I did really enjoy the beginning part and loved the characters initially. They meet through a frightening event that happens to Shelby and Devin is the man who comes to her rescue. I loved their interactions in the beginning, but then it seemed like the story took a turn and just did not keep my interest.
A chance encounter has Shelby and Devin meeting. They both are really hard workers, but when someone try's to hurt Shelby, Devin is there to save her. Now they both can't stop thinking about each other. Chemistry is evident, but these two are in for the long haul. As Shelby's nightmares continue she turns to Devin and he try's to help. This is a quick read that will leave you wanting more and begging for it.
Up Against the Wall is a hot quick read. I love the chemistry between Shelby and Devin. You feel for Shelby for what she goes through. You will love how protective Devin is of Shelby from the very beginning. I love how Devin saves Shelby. Devin is so caring. I love the instant love that forms. Shelby and Devin are so hot together. I loved every moment of this one.
Devin, a police officer, comes to Shelby’s aid when he hears her scream when she’s attacked by a mugger. I love how caring and protective Devin is of Shelby. I love how drawn they both are to each other. It’s a wonderfully written novella, with likable characters that have great chemistry. I loved everything about this story and definitely recommend it.
Sometimes I’m in the mood or just short on time and looking for a quick and steamy romance. Up Against the Wall fit the bill as it’s a novella and filled with plenty of steamy, erotic content. The story and characters weren’t as fleshed out as they could be, but I still enjoyed the story. If you’re looking for quick, hot, and sexy this is right up your alley.
Shelby and Devin are HOT. Their initial meeting sucks but the attraction just blossoms from there. The author does a very good job of explaining PTSD to her readers. Will definitely be coming back to read more of her books.
Devin and Shelby are both single workaholics. Shelby gets in a sticky situation and Devin is there to save the day. From then on it’s very hot and steamy. They are pretty much inseparable. I enjoy This book. This was the quick and sexy reads I enjoy.
Short and sexy!! Devon and Shelby meet under not so great circumstances, but as they continue to see each other, the more the sparks fly. And Wow! do the sparks fly. Loved this short little novella of goodness!
This was a very fast paced novella about two workaholics, who meet under less than romantic circumstances. The spark of interest is apparent from the outset and only becomes stronger the more they see each other. This was a hot, sexy story and a very quick read.
Up Against The Wall was a hot, steamy, sexy, very enjoyable story! I loved Shelby and Devon! They had amazing chemistry and a wonderful connection. I loved how great they were together! If you like a great, hot and sexy romance, Up Against The Wall is the book for you!
This is a short, over-the-top read about two people married to their jobs and find something unexpected with each other. It's steamy and the length is perfect for just a quick read to relax.
These two worlds collide and explode. I really enjoyed the chemistry and the story about their relationship was just as good. Both of them together was amazing.
This little gem was a great novella. The story starts off with a great heart stopping moment, which Shelby almost gets mugged going home from work. The officer that saves her Is a gorgeous man named Devon. As the story progresses Devon and Shelby meet a couple times at the coffee shop and end up on a date. The story continues with a steamy smoking hot sex scene, then right back into a heart stopping moment. This little gem kept my heart beating rapidly and wanting more of Devon and Shelby. I hope Clara continues this story with theses characters because I'd love to see them with an HEA
The story started out intriguing enough. The traumatic situation wasn't quite serious enough to warrant such harsh emotional consequences for the heroine, but then again I have never been in that position. What struck me as completely inappropriate was the last sexual contact between the characters. Completely random scene thrown in and then the story is done. No buildup, no closure, too many leads left open, not even a good cliffhanger.
