Saffron Bryant is an Australian author with a passion for fantasy and science fiction. She began writing at a very early age and hasn’t stopped since.

She has a degree in Biomedical Science (with honours) and recently completed a PhD in chemistry at the University of Sydney.

Unfortunately her cupboard didn’t open onto Narnia, she didn’t get a letter from Hogwarts, and a strange man in a blue box hasn’t shown up… (here’s hoping for an old Wizard on my 50th!!)

So she spends her time writing stories and releasing them to the world.

~Happy Reading!~

Saffron is best known for her science-fiction action adventure The Nova Chronicles , which she describes as "Tomb Raider in Space".

I think I love Nova. She could be an Impossible Mission Force (IMF) Team Leader.

I just finished an advance copy of S. J . Bryant's latest in the Nova Series, "Prisoner Book 8 Nova Chronicles". I was offered a free copy in exchange for an honest review. My personal policy for this, and all Reviews I do, is to only Post a review for a book I deem worth a four or five Star Rating. Anything less than a four gets a private review to the Author with my observations and suggestions.
First things first: I loved the book! To be totally honest, I think I love the main character, Nova. She reminds me of all the people who rise above the adversarial, and often hostile, conditions of their early years. I had one of these childhoods. I lost my Mother at five months and my father at fifteen years old and was raised in the War-Zone of my Father's old-world strict parents home following my Mother's death...so, I can relate.
Nova was an orphaned abandoned child left on the steps of a Whore House. She is raised by the Tyrannical Madam and has to perform all kinds of housekeeping chores. It is expected she will follow the normal path and become one of the "Working-Girls" in the House. Nova fights her way out of this life, and I really mean she Fights. She serves as an apprentice to a successful Woman "Mech-Fighter" but this is no Ladies-Only league. In fact, it is an unauthorized, underground, no-holds-barred-combat often resulting in death or dismemberment. These warriors wear Mechanized Armored Battle Suits that greatly enhance the fighters speed and power. Nova rises to the highest skill levels and wins enough money (Credits) to attempt to realize her ultimate goal of freedom. She buys a decrepit, old, wreck of a space ship that requires more spare parts and skilled labor to make it flight-worthy than she has. The early books in this series "Chronicle" Nova's many adventures that bring her to this place, Prison.
This is no ordinary prison. It's on a remote planet and conditions are so bad the Guards no longer act as Guards within the prison. Their only function seems to be to insure no prisoners escape via the once-every-three-months Prisoner Delivery Shuttle, and they are assisted in this with sophisticated futuristic surveillance systems. It is believed to be impossible to escape even by a "Master-Mind" Crime Boss type who is in "Prison Central" where only the worst, strongest, toughest, meanest, etc. "Bad Guys" control the Prison from.
What terrible crime has Nova committed, been captured and sentenced for that she is condemned to this prison? NONE! She has tricked her way into this prison in order to meet with the Crime-Boss who she believes holds a secret she needs to Escape to the Outer Worlds and away from The Confederacy. The key-secret to crossing The Border to the Outer Worlds, where she believes true freedom lies for her, is held by this Crime and Prison Boss. It usually takes many years to earn your way through the layered prison where the outermost area is controlled by near insane prisoners who only survive by eating diseased human flesh...and they really don't care if their meal is so fresh it still has a beating heart. Nova doesn't have years; she only has three months to move through the prison (prisoner-controlled) system. You'll have to read this great book to learn how Nova accomplishes another seemingly "impossible mission".
One of the things I liked best about this book was how like the Impossible Missions Force (IMF) Team Members she has to function. The prison is so secure there are no contraband weapons or any hi-tech devices to assist her. She must rely on all the skills, wits and deception abilities she has honed all her life. Not only does her freedom depend on her getting In & Out, all her Jagged-Maw friends and other Hunters depend on this as well. The Confederacy is getting very close to locating the Jagged Maw and is just minutes away from finally destroying them all.
