The one man she hates is the only one who can save her...

Working as part of a yacht crew sounded like the perfect escape for senator's daughter Val Ferrell. Glorious Caribbean beaches, turquoise seas, and freedom from her overbearing father? Heaven. But when the ship is hijacked by violent men—who want to use Val to get to her father—Val's fantasy turns into a nightmare. Now her only hope is the ship's captain, who happens to be her ex-lover.

After disobeying an order, covert operative Nick O'Shea's been assigned yacht captain duty. Working side-by-side with the tiny blonde who makes him crazy—and keeping his hands off her—was definitely punishment. But when Val's life is endangered, Nick must choose between staying aboard and fighting to retake the boat or risking their lives by attempting an escape to an isolated Caribbean island. With the ransom deadline rapidly approaching, he's running out of time...

I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

Val's been trying to prove that she can make it on her own without her Senator father's help and as the current chef for a private charter company, she has been doing well. However, when she sees Nick is the new Captain on her ship, she just might get tripped up. Nick is being disciplined for not following orders on his last mission and when he sees the woman who is the reason behind his mental mistake, he knows he's about to be in trouble again. When kidnappers take over the ship though, Val and Nick will be forced to work together and open up about their secrets. It's high seas survival with their life and love on the line.

Impossible Ransom starts off pretty quick with the action and danger but it also starts off in a way that makes you feel like you have missed half the story. Val and Nick apparently met a couple months ago at a party and then had a sexual relationship for a few weeks, long enough for Val to think she was falling in love with him and for Nick to get scared that he might be falling for her. Since there was no prologue showing us this interaction, I thought for sure there would be a flashback chapter, paragraph, sentence…something to show/explain why they fell for one another. We get nothing; the story is all in the present. This means we get no romance or real relationship journey, too.

Val is our heroine who ran away from home, in a grown up way, to prove she doesn't need her daddy and to feel free. I liked her until she and Nick are on the run from the baddies and she begins to display immense TSTL traits/moments. Now, I will say, her character was consistent in her behavior, so maybe I just didn't like her character. However, when she can't fathom killing and eating an iguana to stay alive or killing a man who is trying to kill Nick and kidnap her because every life is precious, and demands to tag along with Nick even when she will obviously be more of a hindrance and again, wouldn’t want to kill in defense of Nick's or her life, I find her motivations TSTL. It should be noted, Val does step up but her emotional fallout for a long time is such that I had wished she'd let the bad guy win. Maybe you will like her pure of heart (head in the clouds) personality, I didn't.

Nick's background story we don't really get until the last half of the book and it was a bit convoluted and over the top with his guilt. It seems he was in the military and now works for a secretive mercenary group who hide behind a boat charter company. We get the name of the boss but no other details and although it might have flushed the story out more, we get no looks at his co-workers; which was also somewhat refreshing as the story wasn't cluttered with serial baiting characters. Nick was an average hero character but who must be applauded for not wanting to ditch Val every time she displayed a TSTL moment.

The action plot with a disgruntled former employee of Val's dad kidnapping her, trying to hold her for ransom to get money and secretive military information, make up the vast majority of the story. Our couple is pretty much on the run the whole time. The reasoning behind it all was a bit uneven and the villains were a bit cliff note but following Val and Nick on the run kept a good pace up in the story and was reasonably suspenseful. As I mentioned, the romance was severely lacking, though. Since our couple had already met and supposedly fell in love, but remember we don't get to see that, there was not really any emotional buildup. Val seems hurt that Nick just left her one night and never called her again and Nick likes to drown himself in thoughts that he is not good enough for Val, then they have sex on the run, and then after being saved and apart for a while, Nick figures some things out and decides he can't live without Val; it was all pretty underwhelming.

The action and the couple being on the run trying to outsmart the bad guys kept me interesting in the story while the heroine's actions and attitude annoyed me and the romance left me disappointed. This story would have been vastly improved for me with a prologue or flashback to how and why our couple first fell in love.

When Val finds herself kidnapped and held for ransom on a boat by four ruthless killers, suddenly being so close to her ex, Nick doesn't seem so bad. Especially when Nick seems to know his way around guns, knives, and hand to hand combat.

Kathleen Mix has written an awesome suspenseful romance that had me glued to the pages and holding my breath with each crazy adrenalin packed twist and turn.

Val is such a strong heroine. Like any normal girl, she's scared out of her mind while on the run but doesn't let that stop her from stepping up and doing what she has to do. It was great to see a heroine who wasn't afraid to admit to her weaknesses but also one who was able to see the bigger picture.

she was a special woman. Beneath the soft exterior, she was strong and brave.

When she's left with Nick as her only chance at survival she doesn't bulk at being dependent on him. She accepts her limitations and works alongside him.

Nick is a tough broody alpha. He was so sure of himself and his life being expendable that it broke my heart to read as his painful past was revealed. Even though he tries to deny his feelings for Val, it bled through with every one of his selfless acts. He was focused (almost borderline obsessed) with saving Val. She was always his first priority and I loved that about him. He definitely has some walls built around his heart but he didn't have a chance against Val.

This was a crazy ride and the chase and evade scenes were written flawlessly. I was anxiously tapping my kindle, crazy desperate to read the outcome and after each one, my sigh of relief was comical in its sincerity. If you enjoy high level suspense with a hefty dash of sultry romance Impossible Ransom is right up your alley!

I'll leave you with two of my favorite lines:

" ... we don’t love things because they’re perfect. We love them for what they are inside, what they represent, the time together, the shared memories represented by our battle scars and flaws.”

"You’re the knight in shining armor I’ve been dreaming of all my life. You make my heart whole and my blood sing.”

What is an independent woman who is being suffocated by her family to do? Runaway, of course! A Ranger haunted by his past, has been taken off his current assignment and placed as a captain on a boat. Hate and love can be a potent mix which these two have in spades.
Impossible Ransom is a suspense romance, which is one of my favorite genres, was sadly predictable. Our heroine, Valeria, drove me a bit insane with her ups and downs. She wanted so badly to be seen as independent when she really comes across as naive and quite rude when accepting help. I love strong characters but I felt that she was not portrayed well enough. Then there is Nick, our hero in the story. I liked him enough but he harbored anger towards Val just because she stirred up feelings in him is kind of childish.
For me to be completely devoured by a book the introduction or the first few pages need to capture me whole. The first scene of Nick and Val together they fight but over something that can be easily fixed. This book for me droned on and I ended up skimming a bunch of paragraphs. I just could not connect to the characters of the book.
The one good thing about this book was the growth these two have at the very end. I love seeing character development and this happened in literally the last five pages.
I was gifted a copy of this book by the JeepDiva in exchange for an honest review. The opinions and ratings are my own.

Nick and Val had a hot and heavy fling from which Nick promptly disappeared without a word. Val is therefore shocked and irritated to find they are paired together to crew the same charter boat. Both are determined to after clear of each other for the duration of the charter, but when the boat is hijacked and Val finds she is the target of a ransom kidnapping, she knows she will need Nick's help to escape. Out in the ocean with little options, the two hatch an of the cuff plan and act on it with no time to fully prepare. They do the best they can, but they will face the fight of their lives to survive.

This was a very adventurous story with plenty of action and nice chemistry.

Val Ferrell's year aboard a luxury yacht crew is an escape to be the woman she wants to be, out of the controlling hand of her famous senator father. The last person she expects to see again is covert operative Nick O'Shea with whom she'd had a brief fling 6 months ago. But if Nick is only there as a punishment, he soon becomes a lifeline when kidnappers storm the yacht and demand a ransom for Val.

The whole story unfortunately, feels like a missed opportunity. As a very extended narrative of two people fleeing kidnappers who are trying to hold Val's father for ransom by taking his daughter, there's a lot of action that seems to sacrifice raw character depth for easy sentimentalism. Val's good-hearted naïveté - seen in her act of rebellion and her behaviour on the island - made the gulf in maturity levels seemed impossibly wide in contrast to Nick's jaded mental state and made me question their compatibility numerous times. There's a huge amount of prevarication about making sure that the sex between them is merely fling material - Nick is unrealistically held back by his own nihilistic view on 'living' - and even if you can see the nature of their conflict coming from a mile away, their reconciliation at the end felt ritualistic and way too easy, given only because a HEA is required of this genre.

I wish the book could have delved more deeply into Val's and Nick's past but it's merely written about baldly and matter-of-factly. Without their previous connection made more explicit, Val/Nick made as much sense to me as a forced couple turning to each other out of convenience only because they were stuck together for survival on the island. Sadly, I couldn't quite see the story as anything more than a survival reality series, fumbling for grips on its main characters and becoming a little contrived as a result.

I liked this story because it kept you on your toes. There was lots of action along with some romance thrown in here and there. Kathleen Mix did a good job with this one I thought!!

Val is in need of an escape from her Dad's watchful eye. When she is offered a job on a beautiful yacht, she jumps at it. What Val never took into account was if the yacht was hijacked by several men and she was on board with no way to get away from them. When Val gets onto the yacht, she learns that her ex-lover, Nick, is going to be the Captain of the yacht. Just what she needed. Will Nick keep his hands off of her or will sparks ignite between them again?

Nick has been put on the yacht as Captain for disobeying orders. Nick quickly learns that Val is going to be part of the crew on the yacht and is told that he is to keep his hands off of her. Nick knows how hard this order is going to be with he and Val being ex-lovers. Will he be able to pull this off? When Nick decides to pull the yacht off shore so that they can get some rest the first night, he thought that he was playing it safe and was protecting them. Only Nick never accounted for the bad guys going off shore as well and hijacking the yacht. What is Nick going to do now? Val is on the yacht with them as well.
When Val and Nick learn that the hijacker is a disgruntled employee of the Senator, Val's dad, they know that things are not going to be pretty. The hijackers are demanding money and some secret military intelligence from Val's father. Will Nick and Val get a chance to escape and go back to life as they once knew it? You have to read this adventurous story to see how things go for Nick and Val. Lots of action to go through with these two on their escape!

I can't wait to see what is next for us as readers from Kathleen Mix. This was a good read!

I was given a copy of this book through Entangled and Netgalley in exchange for my honest opinion.

This was just a hard book to write a review for. Impossible Ransom is filled with action, danger, suspense, and romance.
The book is about Val who is finally out from beneath her father who is a Senator and his helping hands. She is making it on her own and is the chef on a private charter company ship. Nick is the new Captain on her ship and OMG there is such an instant zing she feels for him. Kidnappers take over the ship so Val and Nick are forced together and end up working together to get out of this alive.
There are good moments in the book but not enough that outweigh the negative in the book. Nick is always angry at Val , in my opinion, because she reminds him of someone or past things and he is ALWAYS angry then there is Val. She was great in the beginning then she started showing her childish side and was quite rude toward Nick. Then it seemed like the book started way before page 1 –I felt like I was trying to catch up but couldn’t . The ending was nice but not enough to compensate for the shortcomings. I would love to try this author again but this is a pass for me on this book.

My rating: 2.0 stars **

2.5-3 stars.

Not quite sure about this one, tbh.

We have Val and Nick, meeting in the past and now just having to work at the same time in this yacht. In the beginning of the story, they barely know who the other is, neither revealed their true identities to the other, so as the story advances they not only have to deal with these kidnappers, but also getting to each other all over again.

The story has a lot of action and suspense, however, there was something that just didn’t completely pull me in. I felt that sometimes there were way too many details of situations and things that I didn’t care about, and the overall personality of Nick annoyed me. I didn’t like him very much.

Still, the story had a lot of action, enough to kept me entertained till the end.

Five spectacular stars! My first book from Kathleen Mix and I want to read more. She combines suspense, romance, kidnapping, and Survivor into one fabulously exciting book to read. Val and Nick work for a charter company while hiding from their pasts and trying for a better life. Val's past has come to haunt her and make her father pay a hefty ransom. Nick, hiding the fact that he is a military trained bodyguard, must get them out of this scary situation. The action starts almost immediately with her kidnapping and Nick doesn't sit on his laurels, he is preparing for action. They end up on an island and Mix really put her research to work as we witness their struggles. If you are looking for a fast paced suspenseful romance this is it. Truly enjoyed this book! My copy was given through Netgalley for my honest and unbiased review.

Nick O'Shea is a Ranger for a private security firm. He is being punished for going against orders. So has to captain a pleasure boat for his penance. Trouble start before he is even on board.
Valeria Ladd is battling two men who are trying to come aboard the yacht she works on. The last person she expects to see helps her.
They see the bad guys off, but that is just the beginning of their problems.
A book full of adventure on the high seas, deadly danger on a desert island and the tension that brews between ex lovers. Our heroine is a spoiled rich girl trying to be independent from daddy. She is a lot stronger than even she thinks. Our hero is a bad boy carrying a heavy load of guilt.
A gripping story that keeps the pages flying past. I loved it.

3.5****

This was a crazy intense story that started off with action right away. There wasn't any lead in to the action and heart of the story. It hit full spped ahead and only increased in the action.

Val and Nick definitely had their fare share of heartache and trials and tribulations. They both suffered quite a bit as they struggled to survive. Goodness they encountered a lot. I felt so bad for them with their setbacks. But I enjoyed how they persevered, didn't give up, and looked out for each other.

This was a good read.
The play between the characters was well written and it keeps you reading until the end. There was only a couple spots that seemed to drag but not too long.
I recommend this to everyone.
