This story is like the house that the story is about: something fey and mythopotic forced out of its proper shape by the imposition of Harry Potter fanfic. The characters are nothing like Rowlings, nor the magic, nor the prose, nor the feel of it. It's much more reminiscent of Patricia A. McKillip or Emily Tesh. Too bad, because I loved the house and the horror elements and ancient supernatural stuff.

As it is: recommended for people who like interior decorating.

A magical story from Astolat, with a similar sort of vibe to some parts of Uprooted.
Here 12 Grimmauld Place becomes a main character, full of wounded pride and the desire to be treated properly by the right sort of wizard. The romance between Draco and Harry at times feels secondary to Harry's relationship with the house.

Absolutely fascinating take on what it means to be pureblooded. And what it means to own an ancient magical house. I loved, LOVED what magic is like in this fic!

Some Favorite Quotes:
He was really glad to keep talking about hot water bottles. Horrors and hot water bottles didn't go together at all

"It was all pointless, anyway. There's no sense trying to
force people to follow the call of the old ways. The ones who don't feel it can't, anyway. But it's people like Sirius, like you, that drive the rest of us mad. You do feel it, but you pretend you don't because--I don't even know. Because it's easier, because you'd rather pretend you're kind and sweet and nothing to be afraid of? And meanwhile a little more wonder fades out of the world, every time one of you turns away."

while my original review is not INCORRECT, upon yet another reread (ANOTHA ONE), i do think this story functions purely by fairytale logic and that i can't logic my way around it. it doesn't matter that it wouldn't pass muster with a more canon-adjancent characterization, bcs the characterization is not the point! it's about the dark magic within and a loom you have to lure out of a painting and a house that wants to EAT YOU!! great stuff.

ORIGINAL FEBRUARY 2022 REVIEW
My umpteenth rearead hhh
I know astolat has been a fandom giant for like 20 years now and I've read at least a dozen of her fics but when I think of her work I automatically just think of House Proud.
And of course if I think about it more than two seconds my head starts hurting bcs this story ultimately centres and mythologizes Old Families (i.e. purebloods) in a way that's antithetical to the ethos of the books...BUT IT'S ALSO SO FREAKING COOL. Sentinent houses, the legacy of the JS&MrN-like fae, the horror vibes, the gothic romance of it all!! This fic does SO MUCH with atmosphere and worldbuilding in, what, 20k words, while also being a *literal curtainfic*

My one critique is that I do (most ardently) wish this had been novel-length, not just because I want to roll around in this fic's majestic vibes forever, but because I do think the story would have benfited from having more of the worldbuilding explicitly stated. How secret is this true origin of certain (cos I'm guessing the Weasleys aren't included lol) pureblood families? Does their ancestry/nature automatically translate into greater power and station? Would this be something Harry could ever really explain to and reconcile with his existing found family? One of the strongest suits of the story is how vividly it paints the seductive pull of this traditionalist and elemental worldview, but how does this work in practice? Once Harry has to bring Draco over to the Weasleys for Sunday dinner, and they both start scoffing at the Burrow like a pair of insufferable snobs??

What I'm saying is, astolat pls write a sequel, tysm byeee

The whole house looked better. Everything seemed to be somehow brightening and straightening up, rising determinedly to the occasion, which Harry would have appreciated more if the occasion wasn’t the honor of Draco Malfoy’s presence.

I like that Draco was a little nastier in this one a first, it seemed more true to character. The overall vibe of origins and lore and was lovely and original and I loved loved loved it!

The whole house renovation was fun, as I love DIY house renovation. I thought Harry and Draco's romance was a little improbable and sudden (same bed, let alone bedroom??) but loved reading about it nonetheless. The fairy reference was interesting! She is such a skilled writer!!

house proud is a harry potter fan fiction post war, mainly taking place in 12 grimmauld place. the fic has a big focus on magical houses that in the fic's universe has a personality and life of their own. then the short summary of what the plot actually entails is 12 grimmauld place liking draco more than it likes harry, the house becomes fed up with harry mistreating it and proceeds to lock him inside (and draco gets locked in too, because you know, romance) and the rest of the novel is draco and harry trying to restore the house, show it the respect it deserves and then there's some romance along the way.

that sounds pretty weird, but the magical houses having a life of their own was probably my favorite part of the fanfic, it made for quite an atmospheric environment and was an interesting change from the magic that we see it the original series. the fic was also mostly well written.

but that's where the positives unfortunately end. I mostly just found this fic very boring despite it being pretty short. the main plot just follows draco and harry decorating the house to make it look nice which just didn't interest me in the slightest. like talking about what blue goes with this, what kind of furniture should go here... like who cares!?

the harry and draco romance, which is probably why most people would read this, wasn't great either. the reason I find the idea of drarry interesting is because of their dynamics in the books and how they clash as people, but in this they feel like totally different people than the ones from the original series, harry especially was so out of character and was just weird. this made me totally not care about the romance because if I'm here to read about draco and harry I want to read about draco and harry, not just some random characters with their names. despite them being out of character I also had no interest in the romance beyond that, it seemingly came out of nowhere and I never felt any chemistry between them. there was also a lot of weird possessive parts of it, especially coming from harry that I didn't like at all.

there was also just some inconsistencies with the magic system, comparing it to the original series, that bothered me. as I said having the magic be changed a bit with the houses having a life of their own was cool but smaller things like food being conjured with magic, people yelling 'apparate' to apparate and patronuses apparently being able to physically hurt people (like trampling them and making them bleed???) bothered me.

so yeah I wouldn't say this one is worth it if you're looking for drarry fan fiction, it has some interesting bits but mostly it's just very boring.

I liked powerhouse Hermione, and I ADORED the house magic. It was nice and whimsical, though I wished the writing tone matched that a bit more. Malfoy’s “blood curse” seemed a bit of a stretch, but it wasn’t a dealbreaker. I just wish we could have seen the emotional falling in love a bit more.

- post-war, Hermione CEO
- Hawthorne house magical restoration
- weaving magical curtains, rooms that appear, Malfoy doing manual labor to restore
- long-time crush for Malfoy, won’t sleep with her cause it’s all or nothing to him

I remember being intrigued by the unusual premise for this fic, but can't recall what I thought of the development of their relationship, hence the lack of a rating. When I bookmarked it on AO3, I wrote, "Some dark bits but also light ones, with a clever concept and slow-burn romance" ... which at least sounds better than ones where they start with hate sex, but some of the other reviews say they seem out-of-character, so I don't know. I don't feel like rereading this one right now.

I found it more to be about a house then a relationship.
At one stage Hermione suggests Harry isn’t acting normal. I completely agree, at one stage Harry just acts different, he even thinks it himself, but nothing further is ever said or done about it.
It’s well written, and I really enjoyed it until Harry’s abrupt character change.

very unique take, good writing. wish it had a bit more romance/banter/angst, focus was very much on the house. but writing was good enough that it kept me hooked even through the many scenes about cleaning a house.

Hollllyyyy shiiiiiiit

I don't know if I've ever read any Harry Potter fanfic before, and the idea of Harry/Draco always kind of repulsed me (although nowhere near as much as any of the Snape fanfic..shudder).

But then...Carry On opened that door. And now this. DAMN. Daaaaaaaamn. This is SO GOOD.

A few quibbles, of course, like But I'm just doing a little "LALALALA I CAN'T HEAR YOU" to my reservations and just enjoying it for what it is, which is a really well done, well thought out fanfic with amazing world and character building.

Very enjoyable story, it was like a make-over on the Home Channel, but with magic. And romance.
