Boardwalk Breakers #1

Silent Defender

Rate this book
He’s the hockey league’s first deaf defenseman.

Magnus Eriksson has been dubbed the Silent Defender by the reporters he will only speak to through a sign language interpreter.

She’s a reporter he’s slow to trust.

Jennie Fields caught Magnus’ eye the first time he saw her standing in the back of the locker room. Physically, she’s just his type—long legs, voluptuous curves and an ass he’d gladly worship. Her only downfall is her job.

Unless it’s a slap shot from the blue line, taking chances isn’t Magnus’ strong suit. He’s comfortable with his life, even being deaf, but the more he gets to know Jennie, the more he wonders if he’s been wrong all this time.

Could he have his career, his right to remain silent and the girl? If so, he’d have the perfect hat trick.

ABOUT ME
I am a simple country girl from South Jersey who took my love of reading and shifted it into a love of writing. I am an avid hockey fan (Go Flyers!), which prompted me to start my writing with hockey romance stories. I now write erotic romance as well, and maybe something a bit different than both of those genres in the not-so-distant future.

When not at work as a full-charge bookkeeper in Philadelphia, I'm at home writing, reading or simply spending time with my husband of over twenty years. Both my husband and I love animals immensely, which is evident in my writing. Even my badass characters have pets. Heck, one has a bunny!

If there is any advice I would impart upon you, it is this: Follow your dreams. Always. Don't let anyone tell you it's foolish or unattainable. You have but one life to live—live it!

Whew! After the last series I am thankful this one started off as a "safe" read.

It was sweet, probably too sweet. But I liked the hero a lot. I think it all came together too easily, but that was what I needed after reading the last series.

The story is so sickly sweet that I am surprised that I didn't got diabetes while reading it.
The main characters are both very nice but where is the tension, the expectation, drama ????

And Jannie and her hormones? Magnus, please next time prefer to use a rubber!!!!

Silent Defender is sexy, it's romantic, it's perfect! I fell in love with Magnus and Jennie very quickly. This story has a uniqueness that was refreshing. The author didn't have this blinding need to insert the same stereotypical predictable drama that I find common in many other hockey romances. The hero and heroine don't have some major fight or misunderstanding that forces them apart. You won't find a crazy ex with a penchant for violence. You will however, find a romance that builds slowly at first, a little faster with a big accelerant (no spoiler here) and a happily ever after that will leave you with a smile.

This book is a strong start to Nikki Worrell's new Boardwalk Breakers series. I am DYING for the next book. She has a teaser chapter at the end of this book that has me wishing her to write faster, I need the next book in this series, Five Minute Major, like yesterday!

Received a arc for a honest review. Reading one of Nikki's book never dissapoints. The start of this series tugs at your heart on the first page. Jody Magnus overcomes a huge hurdle that life throws him at a young age, he doesn't let that count him out. He goes on to do what he loves play Hockey. Very few are able to get close to him because of his challenges but he steps out of his comfort zone and lets Jennie Fields inside. Nicely written cannot wait for the next book.

Copy received from author for an honest review

I have been impatiently waiting Silent Defender, and the wait was definitely worth it.

It should be no surprise to anyone who reads my reviews that I am hooked on hockey books - I have read and reviewed plenty of them over the years!

However Silent Defender was a little more to me than just a hockey hottie books. The fact that our main guy is deaf made it more special to me, as my nephew was born moderately deaf, and I have seen his struggles over the years.

Magnus is just all kinds of swoony.

Jennie is all kinds of different to other reporters, and has Mags all kinds of tied in knots about her.

I adore their relationship, the ups and downs, the love an laughter.

I also love the comradery between Mags and his team mates - we have met Cage before, and love that he has crossed over into this new series.

Thank you Ms Worrell for this different take on a hockey-hottie. I can't wait to see where the series goes next.

This was an enjoyable, lighthearted and sweet story. That drew me in and kept me engaged throughout.

Both main characters Magnus and Jennie were also very likable, and shared a spark. Which led to plenty of hot and tender moments between them and I liked how their relationship developed.

I also really liked the idea of a deaf Hockey player. And was intrigued to find out how that would work on the ice and if the story would be believable. And it really was.

Plus the whole group of secondary characters in this story. Including a couple from Nikki Worrells NHL Scorpion Series were all likable too. And they certainly left me wanting to read more about them.

I would therefore recommend Silent Defender to others. Especially anyone who loves a good Hockey Romance. Or has enjoyed the NHL Scorpion Series.

Perfect

I just love reading the intense alpha love of Nikki's Characters! As a hearing impaired person, I love how she incorporated the characters hardship but without making it a seeming forced upon us readers or making it seem like a burden on the characters. The resiliency of both characters show and is appreciated!

I know when a book really touches me when long after the last page is read and the book is closed, my mind is still thinking about the characters and the story. This was one of those.

Mags is deaf and plays hockey for the NHL. I was one of those who was concerned about how this would play out and I give a Gordie Howe Hat trick (I consider him to be the BEST of all times) to Nikki Worrell with this one. She wrote an incredibly believable story about how Mags became the first successful hockey player.

Jennie is a strong woman who goes for what she wants and once they start dating she will only wait so long and she takes the bull by the horns. Having a son who is deaf one of the things I loved about the realism here. Jennie never treated him like he was deaf. She saw the man inside as a whole person.

I loved the refreshing story line, with no female vixen out to get Mags for her own, there wasn't some great secret that one of them was holding from the other, or any huge angst that was going to destroy them. It was an engaging story of two people who are attracted to each other and the bumps along the road to their HEA. This story made me laugh...it made me cry ... it made me cheer for the Breakers and yeah, it made me damn mad at one point but at the end of the day...and the book, I wanted to read it again and again.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to read a story that will pull you in, make you fall in love with the couple, believe in happily ever after, make you feel. If I could give this more stars I would. An awesome start to this series!

I loved Nikki's main character Mags. He is a defender for the new hockey franchise, The Boardwalk Breakers. What makes Magnus unique is that he has been deaf since the age of 15. I never thought about the possibility of a hearing impaired player and the challenges he faces on and off the ice.

Magnus has a chip on his shoulders. He despises reporters and refuses to vocalize his answers, relying on an interpreter. His only weakness in Jennie, a network reporter. He still doesn't speak to her but he does respect her.

Magus struggles with many things. Asking Jeannie out is one of them. Boy did he bumble through it and fail. The way she puts him in his place alone is worth the read. It was fantastic. Have no fear there are a lot of great moments within the pages for Silent Defender.

They are a relationship made for the big screen. The struggles are real. The challenges are ones many of us can identify with in our own lives. I can picture Mags running, searching, screaming Jeannie's name, so much fear radiating that he can't comprehend that he can't hear her screams.

Mags and Jeannie have many challenges to face. Life changing decisions will have to be made. The author has created such strong characters that you know that the love will grow, and the story will keep getting better. And boy did it!!!!!

DNF at 65%. I hate to say that I quit this book with a book boyfriend hero. I absolutely loved this hero, but the heroine ruined it for me. I liked her at first, but after the plot change not so much. I expected more drama or a separation at least, but it was all so overly sweet. It has zero angst, and although I’m not a fan of too much (OW/OM) drama, SOME angst makes a book more interesting. So for the hero this book may have taken 900 pages, but I couldn’t go on with this heroine. I’m not sure why but in a way she annoyed me like hell. Did I already mention I really liked the hero? It was so interesting to read about a deaf hero and he was so sweet and hot! I will give the next book a try, because I’m really curious about Izzy’s and Mitch’s story.

When I first read the summary for Silent Defender I was hyped for the release day of the book, but after getting into the book I was confronted with doubt and disappointment.

As a South Jersey native, the location of the story, the mentioning of common locations and attractions got me even more excited, but didn't balance out my dislike in the end.

The first one hundred pages of the book were the best for me. I loved the relationship between Jennie and Magnus, the connection they had.

A certain common situation ruined the rest of the book for me.

Magnus is the first deaf player in his league and hes not a big fan of reporters until Jennie catches his eye. He finally takes a chance and asks her out which is the start of a whirlwind romance with a few unexpected twists and turns.
You can't help but fall in love with Magnus and Jennie right from the beginning. I absolutely loved their story from page one and didn't want to put my kindle down. Theres ups and downs and some twists and turns that keep you riveted to their story until the very end. The story is so beautifully written that I swear you can feel their emotions. I really really loved this book and I can't wait to read more from this author!!

I purchased this at a book convention and it sat in my TBR pile for too long.
I thought Silent Defender was a sweet, sexy story. Magnus is a NHL pro hockey player, whose deaf. This doesn't slow him down in the least. He is really a sweetheart. He becomes smitten with Jennie and the pair quickly become more.
While I like the book it needed something more. It was mentioned had he wanted to be an advocate for the hearing impaired and deaf community but nothing came of that. I would have loved to see that angle.
The last few chapters were a bit of a rush. A lot was crammed into the end but it was still enjoyable.

DNF 38% and that was a bloody stretch. I get Magnus..sure he was defensive about his deafness, and was interested in someone who got his attention for the right reasons. but Jennie??? WTF I'm so sorry to be mean, but from the moment she said "Kiss me" I was done. No one and I mean NO ONE is not at least slightly nervous about progressing a relationship, yet on their 2nd date she is removing his shoes and falling asleep on him. yeah no. honestly that was more unbelievable than a deaf NHL player
just no.

I legit could not put this book down once i started it. It is now my favorite book she has ever written but Nikki Worrell hit it out of the park with this one...or should i say right in the goal. I fell in love with Magnus and Jennie and all the rest of the characters. The one special thing i want to take from this book is my desire to learn ASL. Thank you Nikki for writing this book. It had all the feels!!!!!!!

Magnus Erikkson is a hockey player, who is also deaf. He hates reporters. They are always trying to get a recording of his voice. That's a no go. Then he meets Jennie. He falls head over heels in love. Mags life is changing for the better? Only time will tell.

It's an ok story. But it did get slow and predictable. Half way through I started to skim. The story just wasn't progressing. I was hoping for more, for the two of them.

I guess I'm in the minority that didn't like this book.. don't get me wrong I'm a fan of the author, but to me this book felt rushed and I kept missing key parts of the story.. after you reach the 50% mark your head spins because too many events happen within chapters... I hope the next book is better

Silent Defender is a fun, sweet, romantic story that draws you in from the very beginning. Magnus and Jennie have such a wonderful relationship and you pull for them from the start. I enjoyed all of the characters in the story and I can't wait to see what else is in store for us in this series. This was my first Nikki Worrell book and I definitely will be checking out the rest of her books!

Must read 💜

Wow, I love this couple, they are so cute together. I also love how this author uses real teams and players names. Love the game play throughout as well, some writers gloss over that. I'm missing hockey right now so I really like it when its in the books. Can't wait to read the next books.
