This book is part of a dark erotic fiction series and may disturb some readers. Zorie is lost, again.
Friends can become enemies and enemies can become friends. What is a man who declares himself your knight in cracked and bloody armor, when he seems to be leading you to your doom?
Mavros, once known as Mister Black, has vanished. Zorie and Grimm are in the hands of unscrupulous men. She will emerge either dead, enslaved, or with revenge in her heart, and a lethal hairpin in her hand to kill those who have hurt the innocent.
Hairpin or bullet, dead is dead. Please note: This is a dark story with graphic violence, graphic sex, and kink.

A lot more of Grimm in this book & his point of view. The things his willing to do for Zorie are hilarious, heart wrenching, & very disturbing. I absolutely love that he’s a man capable of dark deeds but also has a sweet side (at least where Zorie is concerned). Grimm is total swoon worthy book boyfriend material.
A little bit more of Mavros (aka Mr. Black), but not much. I really like his sadistic side. However, I don't really understand him. Much like Zorie, I can never tell what he's feeling or thinking. I really don’t know where the author is going yet with this character but I got a feeling it will come to a head in the next book.
Zorie is still the strong never give up type of heroine. Although, I got the impression she’s weary & downhearted. But she continues to fight on because she just doesn’t know any other way to be, it's who she is. I have much respect for people like that & they make for very interesting characters.
Series
Just as good if not better than the first book (my review of Wicked Ways). As a series, the books are not really standalones but no cliffhangers either.
Cari Silverwood’s second installment in her Dark Hearts trilogy is Wicked Weapon and in my opinion, this is her darkest and most depraved yet. Those of us that love dark erotica start to salivate at those words, but they are fair warning, as Wicked Weapon is not for the faint of heart. In Wicked Ways, we see Zoire end up in the hands of two men, one a mesmer, able to control women at will, and other...somewhat of an unknown in terms of what role he will play in Zoire’s training. As Wicked Weapon begins, so does Zoire’s training in earnest. Mavros, formerly Mr. Black, is in charge and has plans to use Zoire to exact revenge for a wrong done to him by a groups of evil mesmers called the Collectors. When the time is right, just as Zoire is preparing to be used, she is cast into the hands of evil again. She’s escaped before with her life, but not unchanged or unscathed. In this new world, the tables are turned and she is left in at the mercy of two mesmers who clearly have a clandestine side business in acquiring women for the “use” of their clients. Grimm is there as well, but is he friend or foe? Will Zoire be able to overcome the spell and escape with her life and her mind intact?
Ms. Silverwood has given a new warning on this trilogy and I think for good reason. This is dark erotica, but as I have discussed with some readers as of late, dark erotica means something different to everyone. Capture and torture but with a good guy sweeping in and a solid HEA? Bad boy who loves his woman fiercely and who is his only exception? Both can be classified as dark. In Wicked Weapon, I think readers should be prepared for what feels more to me like erotic horror. Everyone’s intentions are in question and we don’t see an HEA in any meaningful sense as of yet. Is there a hit that one may come in book three? Yes, but it won’t be roses and sunshine, that’s for sure. For me, that’s when I start rubbing my hands together in anticipation :).
Wicked Weapon had me reading on the edge of my seat for its entirety. The ending had me worrying about my blood pressure as I sat in my doctor’s office, heart pounding out of my chest! The atmosphere is sometimes dreamlike and often surreal. The Collectors’ training mansion, where Zoire and Grimm are held captive, is a little house of horrors, with almost a fun house type of vibe. It was deliciously disorienting and made for suspenseful reading. Zoire doesn’t take kindly to being forced into the role of a robotic plaything and although she might comply, she has a devious mind that’s always turning. Grimm starts to reveal what type of character he will become, but it’s not without heartache. Zoire isn’t really buying into it. We find out about Mavros’ motivations and although I don’t know that I was supposed to feel this way, he’s the type of cold but measured Dom, self-serving but not cruel, that really gets me going. In Wicked Weapon, there’s evil and then there’s EVIL. Lots of blood and gore for the horror fans, some predicaments that had me cringing and panting at the same time, and no shortage of sex in bondage. Wicked Weapon is the most suspenseful and atmospheric Cari Silverwood book to date and a whole new level of dark. Book three can’t come soon enough for me, as where she goes from here is wide open and unpredictable. If you can handle the dark side, you’ll be rewarded with this series.
For being one of the darkest books that ever played with my mind, Wicked Ways, the first book in the Dark Hearts series, had nothing on Wicked Weapon. This story took darkness to a new level, messing with my head and making me devour the book to find out what would happen next.
In Wicked Ways, Zorie learned of the existence of mesmers. Men who are able to call to certain women, control their minds, and “collect” them. She is controlled by these men and used for their purposes. In Wicked Weapon, Zorie is essentially at a cross roads. She is a collectable, but she also finds that she has the power to resist and seek out other women to aid her. Stolen from Mavros (mesmer patient zero), we see her transition from the hunted to the hunter. She evolves from a woman that is at everyone’s mercy, to a weapon that is seeking to destroy her captors.
At the same time, we see Grimm’s transformation by the mesmer bug. We view the struggle as he battles to control the urges it creates in him, as much as the urges fight to control him. His actions are not always pure, but his intent to save Zorie and bind her to him made him an extremely sympathetic hero that I couldn’t help but root for.
As with the first book in the series, readers really do need to heed the warnings. This is not a romance. At least, not yet. This is dark, terribly sordid, and hard to read. But it’s also a book that sticks with you long after you’re finished because of the possibilities. If you could control someone’s thoughts and feelings, use someone, prevent them from ever telling, with a simple command, would you? Would you feel as if you were controlling them for your own good? Would that power become abused?
Wicked Weapon was a fantastic second book in the series, and has just left me more eagerly anticipating finding out what happens between Grimm, Zorie, and Mavros. It’s darkly disturbing and totally worth the escape.
ARC kindly provided by Author in exchange of an honest review.
First of all I need to point out that everyone has to take really seriously the warnings about this series! It is a dark and twisted series and it’s not for everyone to read.
Although I loved the first instalment of this series, this book didn’t really work out for me. The plot is still surprising, twisted and dark! The writing is really nice! My only issue was that the story felt a bit forced to me. Like the story had to get to a certain point and this book was just the means to it.
Zorie has lost a bit of her fire in my eyes. Although she still tries to fight back the situation she finds herself in in her way, she still didn’t feel right to me. The only part that I really saw the Zorie that I knew, was close to the end! And there it was just a glimpse because after a point I lost her again but in the opposite direction.
Grimm and Mavros were not really clear to me in the last book and I got to understand them better in this one. Mavros has an agenda for his reasons but he is lacking of feelings in my eyes which is a contradiction when the reason of his agenda is because of feelings! Grimm, on the other hand, has feelings but so different feelings from the previous book. To be honest, I started liking him towards the end of the book!
The end of the book was full of action! I liked it but I didn’t like what trigger these actions! I can understand the way of thinking of Ms. Silverwood but it was just a bit too much for me. The epilogue in this book was again amazing and I really loved it!
Oh my gawd....I just don't know where to start. I should probably start out by saying that if you thought Wicked Ways was dark, just wait until you get your hands on Wicked Weapon.
I am not exaggerating about this. I don't know how many moments while reading I found myself going "Good Lawd she went there!" and then re-reading the section just to make sure I had read correctly. There were also several scenes where I didn't realize I was holding my breath until it was over and then having to take a moment to process what I had just read. There were also a couple of times where I had to make sure I hadn't missed my subway or bus stop. Yeah, it's seriously like that good.
All the favorites are back, Zorie, Grimm, Mr. Black. As well as some new players who honestly make Zorie's dealing with Ruben like a play date. Silverwood has seriously upped the ante here with her villains in this book. No doubt about that. These new players will give you chills and wish for their deaths to be slow and painful.
This book left me in a serious book hangover and very impatiently waiting for book number three in this series.
This was a darker read then Wicked Ways. Zorie and Grimm are taken in an ambush that leaves Mavros (aka Mr. Black) with a stab wound. Now that Zorie and Grimm are being held they are asked to do things that are so twisted it made my skin crawl. 'Snuff said! Anyway, Grimm is the man that I want to end up with Zorie but after the ending, I'm not sure what to expect. But I'm still holding out for him like I did in the first book...why can't the underdog win. Just because Mavros is the one with all the power - that doesn't mean that Grimm cannot figure out a way to make Zorie his. I look forward to the next book to see what Zorie has planned next and yes, I'll admit I am hoping Zorie wipes out the mesmers...but maybe leaves one or two of them alive for her own personal fun and games.
***I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for my honest review***
In the second instalment to the series, Zorie has been training to be a dark weapon to take down the mesmers, guided by Mavros with Grimm as a sidekick. They are attacked by mesmers, and she and Grimm are kidnapped to an undisclosed location. Er, I read this in fits and bursts. I want to say an island.
This shadowy cabal of mesmers have been keeping tabs on Zorie after the Reuben incident and has decided to train her and sell to a client. Grimm is a bonus, an extra hand to have around the operation.
The premise was intriguing. One inventive scene concerning chess pieces come to mind. The villains are pieces of shit. Reuben was bad but he was a despotic king of a tiny kingdom- natural born killers carpe diem life. But the two villains deserve all that they get coming to them and more.
Grimm is still being Grimm - good for Zorie for what she does in the end. Is Grimm supposed to be Zorie’s true love? Because I can’t get with his hangdog act in this book. His MO is “I’m infiltrating the mesmer sex slave ring so everything I do, I do to get us out of here!” Sure Jan. 😒 I also can’t get a clear read on Mavros - is he a love interest or is he just some dude? I need to know 😬
Not sure if I’ll finish this series. Took me a while to finish as Ive been skimming it here and there.
Wicked Weapon is the next highly anticipated book in the Dark Hearts Series by Cari Silverwood. If you thought Wicked Ways was dark you haven't read anything yet!
I don't want to say much in this review in case I spoil it but you can guarantee that this book will leave you in a book funk for days afterwards as well as constantly looking on Amazon/Facebook for any details on when book 3 is out.
Wicked Weapon follows straight on from Wicked Ways but the story is a lot darker as it continues to follow Zorie, Grimm and Mr Black.
I knew when reading Wicked Ways that Grimm had a bigger part to play in Zorie's story and I'm glad I wasn't disappointed as he goes to extraordinary lengths to be apart of the mesmer world and to be with Zorie.
I am still fascinated by Mr Black, I can't figure him out at all, I need to know what makes him tick. I honestly think that he could have his own story on how he became a mesmer, I know it was touched upon in book one and a small bit of his backstory is revealed in this book and his reasons for wanting Zorie but I want more! I'm hoping he will feature a lot more in book 3 especially with what happens at the end of Wicked Weapon. The ending was brilliant!
I love the way that Cari is daring with her writing as she isn't afraid to approach dark subjects that other authors may be scared to write about. That to me is a great author.
So prepare yourself for a rollercoaster of a story, you won't be disappointed in this 5 star read.
I'm not a huge fan of dark erotica. Now I realise I've just been reading the wrong ones. Let's get this part over. These books are written well. Really well. The characters grow and develop throughout the stories evolving to reveal the best and the worst of who they are and can be. The darkness is violent, depraved, horrifying. There is a mild supernatural element to their world that binds and controls them. However, they are steeped in reality. That element is what helped me to connect to the three main characters and to like them in spite of their circumstances and actions. Not so much an excuse but their compelling justification for taking paths and actions that are abhorrent. Mavros is a puppet master who has lost control and is trying to restore some sort of world order to a situation for which he sees himself as being responsible. Grimm is a man who has travelled the dark side and would do anything for the woman he loves, even when she doesn't love him back. Zorie is caught up in a web not of her making, one that controls and compels her but she's no victim. She's resistant to the bug that allows others to want to use, abuse and leave her for dead. She's learning how to fight back which makes her both highly collectable and a weapon of mass destruction. Add in human trafficking, sex rings and the worst side of humanity and this a very compelling read.
In this second book, Zorie is learning to resist the mesmers thanks to her dark mentor, Mr Black, now revealed as Mavros. Grimm is around too, trying to learn mesmer secrets and falling for Zorie. However, the Zorie and Grimm are captured and Mavros can't protect them.
Can't say more after this because of spoilers, however, there is lots of gore, and some torture that I had to skip over. If Dark Hearts were a fight, I'd say this is the bit where the heroine is getting creamed and then rediscovers her mojo. There's less humiliation and a sense that Zorie now has a fighting chance. But if you're looking for a romance, forget it. Dark and twisted, Wicked Weapon isn't for the faint hearted.
It's well written, beautifully paced and the characters are superb. I liked Mavros and I was intrigued by Grimm's predicament and the evil mesmers are properly nasty. Living horrors. Zorie is a star; def someone to have on your side in a fight.
I'm dying to see how it ends but honestly, it's so dark that I'm thinking I'll read the third part with one eye closed.
Damn, this one's even better than book 1,Wicked Ways! Thank you Cari, for giving this dark beauty to me,i loved it! Layer after layer's being exposed while the darkness creeps in even further, gets more wicked with every page. Cari has outdone herself with Wicked Weapon and i can't wait for what's coming next! So i'm diving straight into the evil darkness of book 3, Wicked Hunt. Hope i will survive.....
If you want something dark and disturbing this is the thing!
I really enjoyed book one, and Wicked Weapon hits the spot just as well for something a bit (a lot) twisted. It was dark, dirty and sexy.
Zorie is a great character, she's a fighter and I really felt for her, I was with her until the end.
In book one I really liked Mister Black, he was dangerous and intriguing in a way that really appealed to me. That being said, I do really like Grimm, I'm not entirely sure I want Zorie to be his, but he's definitely yummy.
*I received a review copy of this book from the BDSM group on Goodreads*.
Second book in the series. Just like the first book it is dark, gritty and it gives you plenty to think about. Zorie is taken again and being held captive by two mesmers. Zorie tries fighting them but struggles. She never really knows what is happening to her and around her. What is real and what is not. There is a strond horror/paranormal vibe in this book. The House seems alive and ever changing. As a reader you don't know what happening either, so you are at much at a loss as Zorie is. This makes it even more intense.
I loves how strong Zorie becomes in this book. She was strong before, but slowly she is taken charge of herself again. And i will never look teh same at a chessgame again.
OMG Goodreads just ate one of the best reviews I've ever written *sob*
How do you ever get your mind around being violated in the most depraved of ways, when you also loved every second of it whilst it was happening?
Zorie, Zorie, Zorie how my heart bleeds for you. Ms Silverwood is the cruellest of authors to put you through such pain, suffering and heartache. Just as you escape the grasp of one deranged mad-man you fall into the clutches of two vile and evil mesmers. Who to trust, what to believe, how to save yourself? When your mind is so manipulated that up becomes down, left becomes right, how do you fight back? What can you do when you don't even know if your memories are real or imagined? Truth or lie, choice or compulsion?
The manipulation isn't confined to Zorie either, oh no. Just when you believe one thing, whiz, bam, boom, everything is flipped on it's head until you are so twisted up that your mind is just as messed up as it would be had a mesmer played with it. The worst of it is that you will delight in the depravity, get hot when you should be horrified, lust when you ought to loathe and desire when you would normally be disgusted.
If you're British and old enough you might remember a TV clip of Boy Scouts eating their packed lunches on the Revolution ride at Blackpool Pleasure Beach. Lets just say it was more than messy by the end. Well that's a perfect analogy for what this book did to my brain. Orange juice up my nose, cheese squashed to my elbow and crisps down my cleavage.
Oh and those damned mesmers, one who offers salvation but at a price. Convinced that he can craft Zorie into a lethal weapon and extract revenge on the men who destroyed his daughter. Zorie isn't so convinced, not when she can free her mind but not her will. She might be cussing and brewing up a storm in her head, but only whilst her body is following every lurid instruction given to it. Then there are some so evil that you want to stab them in the eye with a rusty spoon, dig out their brains and dance amongst their entrails. No scrub that, it would be far too quick and easy a death. Lets dance on their guts first and then gouge out their brain.
There were so many times when I wondered who the hero was, and indeed if there WAS a hero, or if at some point Zorie was going to be her own hero. This story will make you scream, cry and shout at your kindle in anger. In the best way possible. In a 'This Is My Favourite Series Ever' way. I loved this so much that I wasn't even half way through and I'd downloaded the next book in the trilogy. This book will mess with your mind big time and I really recommend it. Highly recommend it.
Wicked Hearts was dark, twisted and disturbing. This second book is all those things and more.
Zorie's story didn't go where I expected it to. The author has done a tremendous job here of immersing her characters in utter horror and degradation but retaining their humanity and a sense of hope.
That chess game.
Heed the warnings before reading. If you enjoy dark, I believe you're in for a treat.
Sweet holy titfire. This series has me sucked in. I knew I liked dark but didn't know that I did this much. Suspense and dominance. I can't even describe this book and do it justice. Just know it is that good. If you don't have a feint heart read this. So good.
I couldn't wait to get the second book in this series. I absolutely loved the first one and was excited to see where this story was going to go. So when I finally had this book on my reader I was almost scared to start reading it. If you're at all familiar with Cari Silverwood's darker reads you know she can take her characters to some pretty screwed up places and I love that, I really do, but at the same time it makes me very anxious for her characters as well. Oh I know they're not real but Cari's writing is so good that they feel that way. This is the continuing story of Zoire, Grimm and Mavros-aka Mr. Black. Mavros along with Grimm, is trying to train Zoire to resist the control of mesmers so he can use her as a weapon to seek revenge on a certain group of mesmers. We finally find out why he wants revenge and it was heart breaking and made me empathize with him, for a bit anyways. He is a determined man who uses women for his own gains and even though I think he cares for Zoire his own goals take precedent. He wants revenge and will use anyone to get it. It's complicated. Grimm is still hopelessly in love and lust with Zoire. He also discovers info on how a person might be able to become a mesmer and decides he needs to be one. Unfortunately things go horribly wrong for these three while trying to implement Mavros's plan for revenge, especially for Zoire. Grimm and Zoire are kidnapped by a a mesmer group called The Collectors. If you thought Reuben and his buddies were evil, disgusting douche bags well they are choir boys compared to the new guys. Actually Reuben worked for them so it's not really much of a surprise. Einar, Kaage and the assholes that work for them are vile, evil and soulless. They kidnap women to train and sell to wealthy dirtbags and the stuff they put Zoire and these women through are unimaginable, unless of course your Cari Silverwood, who's twisted mind has done the imagining for us. Poor Zoire. If you thought what she went through with Reuben was overwhelming wait till you see what Einar and Kaage do to her. They screw around with her mind and body in a way that is pure evil. One particular scene involved chess and Zoire being the chessboard another involves a piece of equipment called an iron man. Yikes, but at the same time erotic in a twisted, evil, Cari Silverwood kind of way. She knows how to write sex scenes that are incredibly what the hell goes on in your head disturbing but also amazingly I can't believe I find this erotic and hot kinda way. Grimm starts to exhibit mesmer qualities and Einar and Kaage offer to make him a member of their club and promise him Zoire if he does everything asked of him. They ask him to do some pretty immoral things, especially to Zoire and while he seems conflicted at times it's also clear he also enjoys the power and control he has over Zoire. I was a fan of Grimm in the first book but while reading this story I kept flip flopping and am still not sure how I feel about him. It's complicated. Zoire on the other hand is someone I was rooting for in the first book and was continually rooting for her in this one. I hate what these men have done to her and as her anger and thoughts of revenge grew in her I was cheering and egging her on. While being held captive she tries to remain strong and hopeful. It's hard and you can see at times she is overwhelmed and doubtful this will end well for her and the other women and she is always unsure about who she can trust, including herself and her perceptions and realities. Some serious stuff happens to Zoire and sends her on a path that I'm not sure I'm going to like. It's complicated. And that's what I ultimately love about this series so far. Nothing is black and white, good or bad, right or wrong. There are so many shades of grey, so many different degrees of what's right or wrong. You think you know where you are going to stand and then the twisted mind of Cari Silverwood writes a paragraph and you're damn, don't make me hate/like him/her, not when I've already decided how I feel. I am anxiously waiting for the third book in this series, but like this one I know I will feel nervous about starting it because I know that this author will send them and me on a path that will be twisted, dark, disturbing and exciting. Can't wait. Highly recommend if you like a dark, twisted, disturbingly sexy read. Not for the faint of heart.
Title:Wicked Weapon Author: Cari Silverwood Series: Dark Hearts #2 Release Date: 3-25-16 Genre(s): Paranormal Dark Romance Page Count: 212 Heat Level: 5 flames out of 5 Rating: 5 stars out of 5
This book is part of a dark erotic fiction series and may disturb some readers.
Wicked Weapon by Cari Silverwood was a very dark 5 star read. Mind F#ck, Dark & Erotic, Hot Mesmers , Dark & twisted Romance - I know that I say romance but I say that lightly, it’s far from hearts and flowers. It’s the only kind of romance Grimm, Zorie and Mavros know.
The man was a bloody sadist. Sick, it was a sick thing to like.
Cari Silverwood has once again blown me away with her darkness. I didn’t think it could get any darker, let's just say I was very wrong. I will never look at chess the same again.
“Think me bad, if you want. I am not. I will be your knight in bloody cracked armor if I can”
This is the continuation of Zorie’s story told in alternating POV. Mavros has been working with Zorie on her resistance. And let’s just say you will be blown away with his current plan to help her. There’s a very intense scene that will make you want to look away but yet you keep reading because it’s so shocking you can’t believe it’s really happening.
Grimm has also joined Zorie and Mavros. He want’s to become a mesmer and discovers how he can transition. He is in love with Zorie and wants to bind her to him. Can he make it work and finally get the girl?
After Mavros decides that they are going out for an evening of fun, they are attacked and Zorie and Grimm find themselves being held captive by two mesmer’s that train and prepare women for their owners. They also have an interest in Grimm to possibly become a trainer as well. They also have a few secrets that they are keeping from Grimm and Zorie.
Mary had a little lamb….Its fleece was black as coal….It crept into her room one night….And ate her effing soul.
There is so much more to this story. Some very dark and shocking scenes that will make you cringe. The things that are done to these women is very shocking. Zorie’s strength was unbelievable. The sex was once again off the charts hot, with multiple partners, BDSM, sadism, torture and much more. If you are a lover of dark and erotic reads you will definitely want to read Wicked Weapon. Cari Silverwood has become my top favorite for Dark reads, she doesn’t disappoint and really pushes you to your limits. Bravo Cari you got me once again, Thank you!
Warning: Some scenes are very dark and may be a trigger for some. 18+ readers for sure.
Dark Hearts: Wicked Ways #1, Wicked Weapon #2
ARC provided by author in exchange for an honest review. Reviewed by MAustin.
Once again, Cari Silverwood hits it out of the park!
The second in the Dark Hearts trilogy, Wicked Weapon begins with Zorie's capture by the very people Mister Black (Mavros) is searching for. Grimm is taken as well, and Mavros is left injured. The story then jumps back a few weeks, filling in details that are critical to understanding how the rest of the book will unfold.
The world of the mesmers is fascinating, and Zorie's unique place in it is even more a focus in this book than in the last. Grimm is fabulous - flawed and imperfect, but willing to do WHATEVER it takes for Zorie, even while grappling with the darkness within him. Zorie is growing and changing too - her inner strength is even more apparent in this book than in the first. And Mavros - although his motivation is now clearer, I like him less and less. He is the ultimate mesmer, using all those around him to achieve his own end, manipulating people and situations from the very start.
There is sex in this book - shock! - both consensual and nonconsensual, and the scenes with Zorie and Grimm are terrific. If the dark doesn't bother you, you definitely should try this series. It is unique and addictive - and I can't wait to find out what happens next.
The first words out of my mouth as I reached the end of this intense and dark story, was Wow! I was gifted this ARC from the author, in return for an honest review. I think about the writer and I am truly amazed Cari is very much gifted her love of writing and bringing the story to us just how we like it.
Zori damn, just got to give her props even has torn down as she was, all she knows is to keep going. I don’t know if I could do it. Though now Zori isn’t with out skills of her own, a new threat will her skills be enough?
Mr. Black aka Mavros not sure what to think of him. I liked the fact that he did come clean a little bit about why Zori being a weapon was important to him. His feelings he kept locked down tight and whew he has the Saddist down to a T.
Then there is Grimm, an amazing character. You can just feel him and what he feels for Zori comes through. He learning what a mesmer entails but he also is watching Zori. Grim reminds me of like a hot sexy gentle Jim with a bit of a dark side.
This is a awesome second book, its not a stand alone but Cari wont leave you hanging either. A full length book with some awesome characters both old and new. Set back and prepare to be walk in the darkness and be amazed.
In Wicked Weapon - Zorie is held captive by two Mesmers (Einar & Kaage), who are interested in training and then sale off the women in their collection. However, due to their dark desires some are not lucky enough to be sold.
Zorie is challenged throughout this story, trying to determine how she can use the “Mesmer Bug” to reap revenge and save her student (Cherie).
I am satisfied with how the story ended and hope that Zorie will be successful in her quest.
Although, the story is engaging; many times throughout I found myself skimming pages. So with that being said, I am off to Wicked Hunt – Dark Hearts Book #3 to see how things go for Zorie and complete this series (hopefully without skimming through the pages – but we’ll see).
In my review of the first book of this trilogy, I discussed that the story was very dark and deviant. Nothing has changed in that respect in this second book. But some things have been added, including two new mesmers, Kaage and Einar, who abduct susceptible women (whom they refer to as "collectables" ), then train and sell them, as well as some serious and descriptive violence. I have to acknowledge that the levels of violence and depravity are seriously pushing my limits. But, again, the writing is quite good, the storyline remains intriguing, and I want to see where it goes. I just hope it doesn't go too much further down the current frightful road.
Poor Grimm, I felt for him during the full novel. Meanie Cari who has treated him so badly, poor knight with a bloody and broken armor ;) great second opus, thrilling and fascinating. Go for Wicked Hunt hungrily...Zorie in on the hunt and it should be very interesting...
4.5 Stars! The series just keeps getting better. Zorie is becoming a weapon to rid the world of mesmers. And omg...Grimm...I think I might be in love!!! Such a great dark suspense and I need to know what happens next!
As I started this second book in the series, I was still reeling from the huge twists of the first book, that Grimm, whom I had favored to be Zorie’s final love interest, turned out to be her worst betrayer. He’d betrayed her to the first guy who’d kidnapped her when she was really young, then again to Mr. Mavros Black. All these men wanted to possess and use her, Grimm’s step brother, Grimm himself, Reuben, and Mavros. They all either manipulated, forced, or betrayed her to achieve their goals. But then he goes and does a completely selfless thing for her. They’d both been abducted. As he was being interrogated about her, to see if she was safe for them to sell to their buyer, they asked Grimm if she had anything to do with killing Reuben, because if so, then she needed to be “put down” because she was hazardous to mesmers. Grimm decided “If it was going to be Zorie and me in these guys’ bad books, or just me...then I chose me.” So, he takes full and complete responsibility for the hit without her knowledge. To protect her. So, that was one more tick in his favor, but he was still in the red because of his previous betrayals of her. In fact, he may have saved her from being “put down,” but he also saved himself by allowing them to force him to take Zorie from behind in front of them to prove his “loyalty and usefulness” to them. Ug. He found himself in a moral quandary. He knew Zorie could never desire him as a normal man after she’d been “acquired” by a mesmer and in her case, it was two so far (and still counting after the latest abduction) because “the acquired lost the ability to love normal men.” But he still desired her in his bed, so he was tempted to become a mesmer. Yet, he reasoned “Every mesmer I’d seen, including Mavros, seemed self-serving, and most would sell their mother for a new susceptible girl.” He didn’t want to lose his moral compass. Poor Grimm. I wasn’t sure how I felt about Mavros Though he wanted all evil mesmers dead, the ones who killed or sold women for profit, he was still a monster in my book. He knew that the women he compelled to be used by him sexually were ruined for all other men for the rest of their lives. And he knew he would never keep them or love them like they craved and needed but he did it anyway. Though I wouldn’t wish it on an innocent like his daughter, it seemed a justified consequence to him that she’d been acquired and ruined and then killed herself over it. The bastard. Not only that but the asshole had inadvertently set Zorie up to be abducted by planting a news story about her. He’d even implanted a tracking device in her tooth so he could find her whenever he wanted. He KNEW she’d be abused but he let it happen anyway. I will say it again, “BASTARD.” What I found interesting is the dilemma that both Grimm and Zorie found themselves in, both being forced to indulge in sexual exploits with each other in order to “train” Zorie, and to prove Grimm. Once I read the despicable "snuf film" scene, and then learned that Mavros had ordered one made of Zorie, I despised him even more. He continued to use women as his own personal unwilling harem and accomplices. What I don’t understand is why any multi millionaire would pay such exorbitant money to these criminals for a willing sex slave when most women would do it willingly for less, especially impoverished women, or greedy ones. But, then, why is there still human trafficking? I guess it's the evil that can manifest in the human heart. I finally fell irrevocably in love with Grimm, when he properly seduced Zorie and told her he wanted her body, mind, and soul. He never wanted to let her go. I knew what was coming, that Mavros had ordered Zorie in a snuf film, in order to get to her and her captors, so he could snuf THEM out, not her (though he was prepared to lose her if that's what it came to, the bastard). But I wasn’t prepared for THE CHESS SCENE, which was so sick and twisted that I questioned if Cari Silverwood is a sociopath. And now I truly hate Cari Silverwood. This will be the last book of hers that I read. Of course I had to read to the end so justice could be served to the mesmers/collectors. And of course, it got worse because Zorie disappeared from their radar but sent them both a message that she was now hunting and assassinating mesmers worldwide and to Grimm she sent him back his altered book displaying his love for her but with all his artwork and poems ripped out of the book, her way of rejecting his love for her. That broke my heart.
I kept asking myself the question I read in someone else’s review of this book “If you could control someone’s thoughts and feelings, use someone, prevent them from ever telling, with a simple command, would you? Would you feel as if you were controlling them for their own and others’ good? Would that power become abused?” I grieved over Cherie’s death, and Zorie’s normal life, and the death of her love for Grimm. I’m still pissed off at Cari for killing Cherie and in such a brutal horrifying manner. But my yearning for Grimm to continue being Zorie’s hero compels me to contemplate reading the final 3rd book of the trilogy and then decide if I want to keep reading the rest of the series. I took a star away from Cari on this book for Cherie's murder. Bad form Cari.
Addendum: Before I dove into the third and final book of the original series, I finally went to Cari's website and dug around more than I had previously. Indeed she'd listed this book series as the darkest one she'd ever written at the time. In her words, "Really my darkest books." Now that I know what she means by dark, which is "the brutal torture and senseless murder of an innocent," I can better steer clear of anything she's written with this warning.
